“I have done nothing all summer but wait for myself to be myself again,” wrote Georgia O'Keeffe to fellow painter Russell Vernon Hunter from her desert hermitage in 1932.I am writing to you today from a cottage along the rugged coast of New England. This is the kind of salt-cured day I often dream about from the desert. The atmosphere is low and thickly layered, daylight fused with a deeper blue now as we arrive at the far fringe of summer. Black-headed gulls and egrets convene as the tide recedes, and a soft fog absorbs every sound but the rolling hush of morning waves. A steaming mug keeps rhythm with the tick of a wall-mounted clock, and occasional keystrokes move across the page.My family gathers here every summer. This is the cove where my stepmother dug among wet rocks for mussels and crabs with her many siblings and where, as teenagers, we built beach bonfires and popped firecrackers into the night sky. It is where my children set up their first lemonade stand with cousins and learned how to serenade periwinkles from their shells. This summer, a humpback whale made headlines when, mid-breach, it pitched its long body onto a boat, tossing a few local fishermen into the harbor. But salty quietude is the balm of this place today. Midway between the summer solstice and autumn equinox, August's Lughnasadh marks the beginning of the harvest in the Celtic tradition. It signifies an annual maturation — when boughs become fruit-laden and afternoons swell, sometimes bursting into rainstorms, before tapering into early evenings. What is maturation? The word comes from Latin, mātūrāre, meaning “to grow ripe.” Perhaps it is simply to slow down and stay with a gradual, faithful revealing — to allow the flavor of a thing to emerge in its own time. There is no need to push now, for the seeds have already been planted. The earnest prayers of earlier days have ripened into well-earned meaning. In 2021, actress, screenwriter, director, and producer Michaela Coel became the first Black woman to be awarded an Emmy in the Writing for a Limited Series category for HBO's extraordinary “I May Destroy You.” When she took the stage, she unfolded a small piece of paper and read:"I just wrote a little something for writers, really: Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn't comfortable. I dare you. In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to, in turn, feel the need to be constantly visible – for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success – do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us, for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence."A balance point exists here between the seasons. Through the window and across several miles of moving water, my gaze drifts toward the Isles of Shoals—a cluster of barely inhabited islands along an unseen maritime border between New Hampshire and Maine. My mind hovers in midair—in the middle distance. I napped yesterday, perhaps for the first time in years. Upon waking, I sensed that some deep, meaningful thing had happened—some nonspecific remembering. In the poem “You Can't Have It All,” Barbara Ras writes “…and when it is August, you can have it August and abundantly so.”The fringe of summer welcomes us to sip and sift and soften into ampleness. You can let yourself have it. The world may not even notice, and if it does, you can simply explain how you've been waiting to receive what is yours from silence. My daughter hauls a bucket of saltwater from the beach below. She has the fine idea of boiling an egg in it. My father—her grandfather—gamely eats every bite and then reports that it is the best damn egg he ever tasted. The Guest House is a reader-supported publication. Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast. This episode focuses on a forgotten Goddess in Irish mythology. We celebrate Lughnasa or Lughnasadh as the first harvest day, but there was once a greater celebration known as the Tailteann Games in Meath and all over Ireland. These games were in honour of the Goddess Tailtu, foster mother of Lugh, whose name we remember as the God of the summer sun and the archetypal mythic warrior… but what of his favourite foster mother? Today's episode is dedicated to Tailtiu as we are in the middle of August, which in Irish is the month of Lughnasa. We will resume our Fianna series in the next episode after this story. Please note the content of these stories may be triggering for some listeners, please take care of yourself as you listen. This story includes mentions of family separation and physical violence. Whether you choose to call it Lughnasadh or Lammas isn't important, what is important, however, is taking the time to celebrate the first harvest sabbat. This is a time to come together as a community to break bread and appreciate the abundance of the season. Baking a loaf of bread, gathering wild flowers, or making a corn dolly are just a few ways to honor this lovely liminal space between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. As we take this quiet, rainy walk through the woods, envision all the ways you'll choose to mark this moment on the witch's calendar. I muse on what the practice of these holidays, the themes and perspectives they invite, might have to show us about burnout. And I share some agricultural context for the season and some questions you might want to sit with to guide your decisions about how and where to dig deep and spend your energy in preparation for fallow cycles in your own life. Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh, is a festival celebrated on August 1st, marking the halfway point between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox, and the first harvest of the year in the Wheel of the Year. It's a time where Nature is modeling for us the themes of gratitude and abundance, harvest and reaping, transformation and sacrifice, community and sharing, and reflection and planning. Did you know? The word Lammas actually comes from the Old English "loaf mass." People baked a loaf of bread from their first harvest and brought it to the church to be blessed. This bread was believed to have healing and protective properties, so they placed it in the corners of their homes and barns for protection and blessing. Even though the exact date of Lammas is August 1, we can celebrate this whole season. Beltane Spring Renewal Yoga Nidra 2024  Recorded live May 1, 2024, at Blue Hot Yoga www.bluehotyoga.com By Melissa Abbott after 26 postures and two breathing exercises in a Hatha Yoga class.  This Spring Renewal Yoga Nidra honors the May 1 or May Day tradition, known in the Celtic Tradition as Beltane. Beltane is a Celtic festival that marks the beginning of the warmer season, typically celebrated on May 1st. The origins of Beltane can be traced back to ancient Gaelic traditions and is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Imbolc, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. Beltane is a fire festival that celebrates fertility, growth, and the blossoming of the earth. It is a time when the veil between the human world and the spirit world is believed to be thin, allowing for easier communication with the divine and the fae folk. Traditionally, Beltane was a time for lighting bonfires, dancing around the Maypole, and performing rituals to honor the earth and encourage abundance and prosperity for the coming season. Today, Beltane is still celebrated by modern people as a time to honor the earth, connect with the cycles of nature, and celebrate the vitality and energy of the season. It is a time for planting seeds, setting intentions, and embracing the energy of growth and renewal that comes with the warmer months. What would you ask of Brigid, of a goddess that tends to life, death, forges and fires and creativity!See yourself as an accomplished being, who has earned a seat at the table…what table and who is there with you celebrating?Where does your heart go to when you think of the world “land”? Lughnasadh is a cross quarter sabbat in the Wheel of the Year. This holiday is celebrated on August 1st, the closest full moon or when Leo is at 15°. Throughout Paganism, the first harvest is celebrated midway between Summer Solstice and the Fall Equinox. Lugh is known as the Sun God or a God of Light and is the foster son of Tailtiu, a Femorian who survived the invasion of the Tuatha Dé Danaan. Tailtiu was known as an earth goddess. This celebration marks a time of harvest, gratitude and the beginning of letting go as each night gets darker and darker in the sky. As the feminine reign takes over, we remember to give way to the natural flow of letting go with grace and ease. Notes: Abundance, gratitude -- words that can be so annoying when you're feeling scarcity and lack -- I think part of the reason for traditional festivals was to smush us together with other people who were celebrating so that we can't help but feel a bit of a lift, a bit of a reminder that oh, yes, there is plenitude in the world, and food tastes good, and even better with loved ones around us. I'm grateful to Flora Ware for her entire collection of chants for the year... grateful to you for singing with me -- to my mind, that makes us kith, and I'm so glad to celebrate abundance with kith and kin through this song. He has family connections to the music through Ireland and Newfoundland, and is considered one of the top producers in Irish music in the Midwest. 4:37 - Willowgreen “Crocker's Cove Reel” from Willowgreen 7:34 - POITIN Poitín are an award-winning traditional Celtic band from Pilsen in the Czech Republic. They explore all forms of Celtic music but are firmly grounded in the pub session tradition and like nothing better than sitting round a table in the corner of a cosy pub playing old favourites about tarry sailors, merry maids and drunken nights. Poitín have performed at festivals across Europe in Italy, France, Poland, Denmark, Germany and the Czech Republic. As the album says, it's 'one for the road', to go with you and keep you company in your car or on your bike, and this Celtic world music will take you from Ireland to Argentina, from England to Egypt, from Brittany to the Czech Republic and beyond. 15:44 - Poitin “Claudy Banks” from One For the Road 17:58 - AMELIA HOGAN - TAKING FLIGHT Amelia Hogan is an impeccably authentic singer of Celtic music and her heart comes through in honeyed tones on Irish, Scottish, British, and American styled vocals. She sings in the Irish music tradition of Sean-Nós, or “old style” as well as accompanied. Amelia also plays bodhran and a small 22 string Welsh lap harp, and tours internationally to global acclaim. Amelia Hogan sings both traditional and contemporary folk music with lilting graces and subtlety. She'll weave a mysterious old magic that takes the listener out of time and place. She transports audiences with haunting melodies, holding them close, and stirs ancient spirits with an evocative storytelling presence. 24:07 -  Amelia Hogan “Taking Flight” from Taking Flight 26:19 - FEEDBACK 28:24 - KINNFOLK Josh and Julie Kinn weave bouzouki, bodhran, and smooth vocal harmonies in their Celtic folk music from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They are proud of their deep songwriting bench - the original songs of Boston Blackthorne have won several national and international songwriting competitions including first place in the International Narrative Songwriting competition and honorable mention in the International Songwriting Competition. The band's sound is centered around powerful vocal harmonies and lead vocals shared by several of the members.  Between the 5 core members instrumentation includes fiddle, 4&5 string banjo, harmonica, 6&12 string guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, bass and drums 50:26 - Boston Blackthorne “Fishing over the Lusi” from Single 54:40 - ALTAN - FAVORITE SONG OF MAIRÉAD NÍ MHAONAIGH You can hear more stories by the Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh on show #580. Obviously, I am the host of this podcast. But I'm gonna read my current bio on my website like I've done with others. Marc Gunn is a Rhythm & Folk songwriter who fuses Irish and Scottish folk songs with pop culture. One brewery called it Sci F'Irish music. His musical weapon of choice is the autoharp. He breathes acoustic Rock and Roll into this folk instrument and adds a bellowing taste of rhythm & blues. Gunn found musical inspiration performing Irish drinking songs. He learned the art of performing at Renaissance faires and from his childhood idol, Elvis Presley, who said, “You've got to put on a show to draw a crowd.” His concerts are fun filled with sing along songs that get the audience's feet tapping. And now for my song… I first heard the song “Peggy Gordon” from a cassette of Irish Drinking Songs I found at Half-Price Books in Austin, Texas. I learned most of my early Irish song repertoire from that album, songs like “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Big Strong Man, “Wild Rover”, “Bog Down in the Valley” and lots more. Their version of “Peggy Gordon” was short, but memorable. I played it on and off for many years. I remember singing it at a pub in Switzerland when I met Heidi and Stef of the Celtic band Bow Triplets. In July 2009, I met my future wife, Gwen, while touring in Virginia. We had this whirlwind romance and began talking on the phone every day and went to see each other as much as possible even while I was out on tour. I was completely mesmerized by her. A few weeks later, I was back in Austin. I was scheduled to record my next studio album with Rich Brotherton. He's an incredible engineer and had done some brilliant work for Ed Miller and lots of top-notch artists in Texas. I was having trouble singing the song. I was pitchy and my voice lacked any real emotion. The lyrics have this great feeling of love and longing. Which is exactly the feeling I was having with Gwen so far away. And so… I closed my eyes, focused on Gwen, and sang. To this day, I still tell people it is one of my best recordings. Because I feel like I nailed it. And then to top it off, Rich Brotherton added some absolutely beautiful guitar work, as he did throughout that album. It is definitely one of my warmest and lushest and best-produced albums. 1:42:07 - Marc Gunn “Peggy Gordon” from The Bridge 1:46:26 - ENDA REILLY Enda Reilly is a folk singer, songwriter and guitarist from Dublin, Ireland. Firmly rooted in the Irish tradition with songs that strive for a better future, Enda Reilly's work invites you to see the world from his varied and unique perspective through each new song and project. From busking on Grafton Street to the National Concert Hall, Enda has performed on countless stages in his hometown of Dublin and beyond. 1:50:46 - Enda Reilly “Christmas True” from Christmas Is With Us 1:54:07 - CLOSING 1:54:22 - THE CHIVALROUS CRICKETS – LORD OF MISRULE The Crickets explore the roots, branches and crossroads of Celtic and English folk and American Old Time music. With equal attention to exhilarating performances and academic rigor, they bring to the stage boldly reimagined arrangements of standards and originals with traditional influence. With a particular focus on song repertoire, they're known for their rich vocal harmonies and fascinating textural blends incorporating over 15 instruments, both modern and ancient. They're a family band comprising two sisters, two couples and childhood friends. Four of their members are full-time classical musicians as well. 2:02:23 - The Chivalrous Crickets “The Lord of Misrule” from A Chivalrous Christmas The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather. Asa Swain wrote: "Dear Marc, Thank you for playing “Banjos we have heard on high” in the Nov 28 episode (of the Celtic Christmas Podcast). It made me smile in delight. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas season. Thanks for sharing beautiful Celtic music with us year round. I've been listening to your show for about 15 years, I got a chance to chat with you at the online Boskone you attended in 2020. (On zoom) You talked about how wonderful traveling was. I haven't travelled overseas since 2019 (because of COVID), but in December my wife and I are going to spend a week exploring Iceland. We're very excited. (we'll only have 4.5 hours of sunlight each day, but we hope to see the northern lights) . All the best."
