When mythologist Michael Meade received a mythology book on his 13th birthday, little did he know it would ignite a lifelong passion for storytelling and transformation. On our latest podcast episode, we're honoured to have Michael share his journey, from an unexpected act of storytelling that saved him from a gang, to his dedication to at-risk youth, and his personal defiance that led to profound revelations within a military prison. His perspective on personal transformation, the awakening of our inner 'genius', and the visceral power of myth in our lives is nothing short of spellbinding. Our heartfelt conversation with Michael delves into his collaborations with cultural figures like Malidoma Some and the imperative of healing through community. We trace his path from solitary confinement to organising healing conferences for war veterans, highlighting how shared rituals and storytelling foster connection and recovery. Michael offers insights into the concept of 'sudden community'—a powerful bond forged in the crucible of shared trauma—and how individual purpose might be the key to resolving our greatest cultural and environmental challenges. Then we turn to how Michael met Robert Bly and James Hillman and how their paths got intertwined in the mythopoetics of the 90s. It's an in depth look at their work with the wounded masculine of the collective psyche and how difficult it was to contain once it garnered the glare of media attention. The theme of wounds takes us into the image of Chiron and his role as the wounded healer; and how perhaps that was the image that was with them throughout that time. This leads us to a mythic moment when Chiron meets Prometheus and offers to take his place trapped in the rocks. And how this exchange might just be occurring to us today in many obvious and subtle ways. Malidoma Patrice Some bridges paths between the ancient tribal world of the West African Dagara culture and modern Western society. He shares how the rites we have in the West don't really help people to cope with death in a positive way, and talks about how some rites are done in the traditional context.Malidoma Some (1956–2021) was initiated in the ancestral traditions of his West African society, and is a medicine man and a diviner in his native culture. He holds three masters degrees and two PhDs from the Sorbonne and Brandeis University and has taught at the University of Michigan. His work has particular relevance for men seeking a redefinition of their identity and role in the community, and he is much in demand as a group leader in the United States and in Europe, and teaches with Robert Bly and Michael Meade in men's conferences. From the Archives: This live interview was recorded on February 23, 1994 on the nationally syndicated radio program, hosted by Laura Lee . Kwanzaa is an African American sacred week created by Maulana Karenga in 1966. Its purpose is to have African Americans focus on seven principles which are foundations of a holistic and free life. In this final episode of 2022 Makeda and I focus on the fifth principle which is Nia or purpose. We have a passionate conversation about waking up from delusions and living our life purpose with joy and courage. We talk about:My favorite part of Kwanzaa celebrationsHow and why we celebrate Kwanzaa in our family Why I am obsessed with life purpose and why you should be tooCan your life purpose vary as you enter different stages of lifeWhat happens when raising kids feels at odds with your life purposeThe dangers of falling into delusion –any thoughts or narratives that take you away from your life purpose. How it feels to live my life as a Queen and use that energy to drive my life purposeResources:Makeda and I both highly recommend Malidoma Some's book the Healing Wisdom of African because it shows how to use ritual, nature and community to help you remember your life purpose.Makeda suggests the ickigai method as a way to gain awareness of your vocation, mission, and career.I suggest that you take a mini-retreat regularly to confirm your life purpose and to make sure that your life is aligned with fulfilling on it. John Scaife This episode discusses ritual, what has happened the masculine in the West and it's the implications for society, very engaging and very deep. John Scaife MA Cantab has walked twin paths of business man and ceremonialist for over 30 years. His business suited life culminated in floating a company he co-founded on the stock market, after years as an entrepreneur and banker, during which time he was lucky enough to stumble upon the nascent mytho-poetic men's movement, learning from Robert Bly, Michael Meade, Malidoma Some, Robert Moore, James Hillman and Martin Prechtel. He went on to study extensively with Pretchtel and Some, developing his own deep sense of ritual and the sacred, which he has sought to weave with traditions of these lands, tapping into his skills as storyteller, writer and life coach. A sportsman and lover of the outdoors, as often as possible in his native Northumberland, he is also very aware, from his time in business, of the need to ground these learnings in the practicalities of the day to day world we live in. www.greenwavecoaching.com https://www.facebook.com/Greenwave-Coaching-181000316110045 John also works with Annie Spencer check out http://www.hartwell.eu.com/riteofpassage.html Also listen to Annie's interview on the podcast To support the podcast and get access to features about guitar playing and song writing visit https://www.patreon.com/vichyland and also news for all the creative music that we do at Bluescamp UK and France visit www.bluescampuk.co.uk For details of the Ikaro music charity visit www.ikaromusic.com Big thanks to Josh Ferrara for the music

They often say you shouldn't meet people you admire because they may disappoint you. After over a decade of following slam poet, thespian, and organizer Mayda Del Valle's career and creative works, I have to say I was not disappointed. Despite being nervous to meet this Def Poetry Jam star, Mayda has a way of disarming you with her charm and contagious laughter. We spoke about her iconic poem, "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" which can be seen here, which is one of my favorite pieces from Mayda. We discussed her upbringing in Chicago, how hip-hop influenced her life, and the role that community organizing played in making her the storyteller that she is. Guest Bio: Poet and performer Mayda Del Valle has been described by the Chicago Sun Times as having “a way with words. Sometimes they seem to flutter and roll off her lips. Other times they burst forth like a comet streaking across a nighttime sky.” Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. She is the author of A South Side Girl's Guide to Love and Sex , The University of Hip Hop and was a winner of the 2016 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize from Northwestern University Press. She appeared on six episodes of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She began her artistic career at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was the 2001 Grand Slam Champion, and went on to become the National Poetry Slam Champion in the same year. She was the youngest poet, and the first Latinx person to do so. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. Oprah's “O” Magazine selected her as one of 20 women for the first ever “O Power List”, a group of visionary women making a mark in business, politics, and the arts. She has performed at venues across the world, including the White House in May of 2009, by invitation of President Obama and the First Lady. She has also served as a mentor and educator in the non-profit world, teaching poetry and performance to incarcerated youth. She currently works in the tech industry at Snap Inc. facilitating talking circles and developing curriculum to support company wide DEI initiatives that scale empathy and understanding. Mayda had also been a devoted student of various healing practices and African Traditional Religions. She is a third degree Reiki Master, and completed a two year Indigenous African Spiritual Technologies program with respected Dagara elder Malidoma Some. Soon after she was led into the ancient Yoruba spiritual tradition of Ifa. She was initiated into the mysteries of the ocean deity, Olokun in 2017. Her initiated name is Olokuntumise, which means “Olokun has repaired my life.” You can learn more about her by visiting: https://www.maydadelvalle.com/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This week’s topic on Ancestral Healing is not one that I’ve ever spoken to. And perhaps it was my ancestors themselves who inspired me to share this perspective with you. As I am coming off of the heels on an Energy Healing training based in the ancient African wisdom, ancestral healing is ripe in my being. The topic of connecting with ancestors might be a strange one for you. It certainly has been for me up until just a few months ago. And we often look at the traumas or imbalances we hold in our body as an “ancestral curse.” This episode invites you to create space for this new perspective: looking at the “curse” as the gift. In this episode, I share the personal experience of trauma that has existed across generations in my family, my work / responsibility / privilege in clearing them, and experiences I’ve had being visited by my ancestors. I hope this brings you clarity or curiosity. I hope it starts to fill pieces of the puzzle that have been missing for you. And I hope it brings you the reminder that you are not alone—now, nor have you ever been. You are the embodiment of your ancestors’ wildest dreams! Welcome to Audible Café, where we get together to talk about nature, wildlife, wilderness, conservation, environmental protection, climate change, and things related. Today, I’m airing my interview with Jennifer Browdy, who is a writer, teacher, editor, and coach. She is deeply committed to opening up conversations in person and online that are relevant to our times, and to helping others find expression through their writing. Memoir is a grassroots sort of genre, inviting anyone and everyone to tease out the significance of the ordinary moments that, day by day, compose a life. Jennifer Browdy Jennifer’s books include “What I Forgot….and Why I Remembered: A Journey to Environmental Awareness and Activism Through Purposeful Memoir”published in 2017, which was a Finalist in Autobiography/Memoir in the 2018 International Book Awards. Jennifer also wrote the companion book for writers of purposeful memoir, which was a winner of a 2017 Nautilus Silver Award for creative process. Prior to that, she was co-editor with Jana Laiz and Sahra Bateson Brubeck of "Writing Fire: An Anthology Celebrating the Power of Women’s Words." All three of these books were published by Green Fire Press, an independent publishing company that Jennifer runs with her business partner, Jana Laiz. Earlier in her career, Jennifer edited two powerful compilations of women writing resistance. Her current project - called “Worldwrights” - a term Jennifer coined - will distill “lessons in life and leadership” from 15 inspiring writer-activists who have used writing to right the world, and who have also written memoirs. Welcoming Spirit Home is a book that anyone interested in birth, Children, or the fostering of non-violent, compassionate societies is likely to want to read. Start to finish. In one reading. Sonbofu Some brings to life the importance of an entire community's celebrating the significance of the processes of a baby's conception, a women's pregnancy, life in the womb, the mother and child's birth, and their bond and development as souls, in the context of their family and community-at-large. Sonbofu speaks with the natural ease of a woman born and raised in a well-functioning, bonded culture. She shares a great deal of the ancient wisdom of her Dagara trive of Burkina Faso, a tiny land-losked country in Western Africa. This is where Sobonfu lived until she was "chosen" as a wife for Malidoma Some, an older man from a nearby tribe who was already living and teaching in America. Finding herself in a strange culture, not knowing the language, Sonbonfu bore the shock of all immigrants, but especially because she had never before been outside her tribal village. In the subsequent years she learned fluent English and, like Malidoma, took her place as one of only a handful of Africans who have continued to live with one foot in the modern technological culture of the U.S. and the other in their native land. She regularly returns to her village for spiritual susrenance and familial ties. It is this unique blend of outside observer of Western culture and modern Westernized woman who works hard maintaining her deepest traditional values that makes Sobonfu's wisdom so special.

As a house quest of Baba Wesley Gray and his wife, Dr. Dora Gray, Dr.Malidoma Some',introduced the Grays to the African Yam and other vegetables along with the diet and health customs of his community, the Dagara people of Burkiina Faso,West Africa."There is no doubt that,at this time in history,Western civilization is suffering from a great sickness of the soul. The West'sprogressive turning away from functioning spiritual values;its total disregard for the environment and the protection of natural resources;the violence of inner cities with their problems of poverty, drugs, andcrime;spiraling unemployment and economic disarray;and growing intolerance toward people of color and the values of other cultures all of these trends,if unchecked, will eventually bring about a terrible self-destruction.In the face of all this global chaos, the only possible hope is self-transformation.Unless we find new ways that can touch and transform the heart and soul deeply, both indigenous cultures and those in the West will continue to fade away, dismayed that all the wonders of technology, all the many philosophical'isms'and all the planning of the global corporations will be helpless to reverse this trend."Dr.Malidoma Patrice Some Be sure to visit sites:- www.drumsofchangedotcom and http://www.healthisalwayswealth.com/

Join us as we review Natural Psychology and Human Transformation by Na-im Akbar, Ph.D Na-im Akbar has been described by Essence magazine as "one of the world's preeminent African American psychologists and pioneer in the development of an African-centered approach to modern psychology" In this book, Akbar asserts that we are more than the sum total of our actions and more that the makeup of our physical selves. He also indicates that the essence of us is spiritual and that, as creations of God, we have growth and development potential that reaches far beyond our limited-and limiting-perception of ourselves.

We will discuss the last principle's of Kwanzaa , highlighting the last principle which is Imani (Faith). We will also discuss the insight of Dr. Malidoma Patrice Some regarding Ritual. The Dagara process of preparing for ritual As Malidoma states that the teaching of indigenous cultures may help us go beyond modernity. "There was a time when all people were indigenous people on some part of the Earth. But in the last half of the millennium, the migration of people from region to region and from countryside to city broke many of the ties we used to have to one another and to the land and water that supported us. Those who didn't make the move, the indigenous people of the world, can help us remember what it's like to be connected to the environment and to each other in a community. This is valuable not because we would necessarily want to return to the way we used to live, but becuase facets of that connectedness can contribute greatly as we create a sustainalbe way of life."
