This week, Kyle Long shares some of his favorite interviews of 2024. Listen to conversations with Carlos Santana, Omar Apollo, Babyface, Lakecia Benjamin, Zakir Hussain, Indianapolis jazz legend Phil Ranelin, Indiana reggae pioneers Reggaenomix, and David McDonald, author of the book “My Voice is my Weapon: Music, Nationalism, and the Poetics of Palestinian Resistance”.
After a crazy few years, Omar Apollo returned with his sophomore album, “God Said No,” this past summer. It was inspired by a bad breakup that he says left him feeling like he hit “rock bottom.” A few months ago, Omar sat down with Tom Power for the second time to talk about transforming his sadness into music, making his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino's film “Queer,” and launching a new hot sauce.
Listen to an interview with the poet, activist and educator Nikki Giovanni, who passed away on December 9th at the age of 81. In 2015, Giovanni spoke with WFYI's Kyle Long. They discussed her work in music, and her connections to Indianapolis. Also, as we approach the end of the year, media outlets including NPR, Rolling Stone, the New York Times and Pitchfork are publishing their annual “best of” music lists. We'll explore music from the Indiana musicians featured among the year's best, including Jlin, Omar Apollo, Justin Hicks of the HawtPlates, and Freddie Gibbs.
Queer Review | Daniel Craig Like You've Never Seen #moviereview #danielcraig #a24 In this video, we review the film 'Queer.' Directed by Luca Guadagnino from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, based on the 1985 novella by William S. Burroughs. Set in 1950s Mexico City, the film follows an outcast American expat (Daniel Craig) who becomes infatuated with a younger man (Drew Starkey). Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, Omar Apollo, and Lesley Manville also star.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After a crazy few years, Omar Apollo is back with his sophomore album, “God Said No,” which was inspired by a bad breakup. He sits down with Tom for the second time to talk about turning his sadness into music, making his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino's film “Queer,” and launching a new hot sauce.
Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Omar Apollo is on the road for his tour promoting his highly anticipated sophomore album “God Said No.” He says the title means “it is what it is” or “lo que será, será” and that it's a response to all the songs on the album. Apollo stopped by the WBEZ studios ahead of his August Chicago show at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. Reset sits down with the singer to talk more about creating his album, embracing his queer identity, hot sauce and heartbreak. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
After releasing his second studio album ‘God Said No' in late June, Omar Apollo is off on a world tour — stopping in Chicago on Aug. 23. Recorded at London's Abbey Road Studios, the album explores the complex emotions tied to heartbreak, with a feature from poet Mustafa and a voice note from actor Pedro Pascal. The album comes as Apollo prepares for the premiere of his debut film, Luca Guadagnino's ‘Queer,' set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September. He spoke with Vocalo's Nudia Hernandez about his teenage drive to pursue music (propelled by his dad saying he sounded “terrible”), his acting debut and if he really spent 50k “out of spite” like the new album says. Omar Apollo will perform at the Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on Aug. 23, on tour in support of ‘God Said No.' Find dates and more info at omarapollo.com. This segment originally aired on Vocalo Radio 91.1 FM during Nudia In the Afternoons on Thursday, Aug. 22. It was produced by Nudia Hernandez and edited by Morgan Ciocca, with production support from Abigail Harrison.
Listen to an interview with the Hobart, Indiana pop star Omar Apollo. He will discuss his new album “God Said No”, his memories of growing up in northwest Indiana, and his upcoming concert in Indianapolis.

Omar Apollo, a rising star in the indie R&B scene, began making music on his own by teaching himself chords from YouTube videos and honing his sound in an attic in a small town in Indiana. His first breakthrough came on Spotify in 2017, with the song “Ugotme.” Four years later, Omar has amassed more than 100 million streams on the platform and has toured internationally. In this “How I Made It” segment, Omar Apollo takes us back to the days of making music on borrowed equipment, and shares how he explored everything from funk music to corridos to make his debut album, “Apolonio.” This episode originally aired in February of 2021.

Kenny Beats is a hip-hop producer who's been making beats and producing songs for other artists since 2010. He's got a long list of collaborations, with rappers like Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, and Denzel Curry. In 2022, he did something he wasn't really ever expecting to do, which was to release an album of his own. The album is called Louie, and it's a tribute to Kenny's father. I talked to Kenny about the song “Still,” the first song he made specifically for this project. It features guest vocals from JPEGMafia and Omar Apollo, and a sample from gospel singer Linda Kemp. Louie includes a lot of tracks where you can hear Kenny's dad's voice, and even though "Still" isn't one of them, as Kenny explains, his relationship with his dad is embedded in the song's DNA.
