The Healthier Together – EU Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) initiative (2022–2027) aims to help EU Member States reduce the burden of major chronic diseases. As the end of this initiative approaches, non-communicable diseases – including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and liver conditions – remain among the EU's most pressing and complex health challenges.According to the European Parliamentary Research Service, 51% of the EU population aged 16 and over is overweight, and 17% is obese. Rising rates of overweight and obesity, poor diet, alcohol consumption and metabolic dysfunction are key drivers of NCDs across Europe. Among the conditions linked to these risk factors is Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD), a spectrum of liver disorders characterised by excess fat accumulation in liver cells that can progress to inflammation, fibrosis and cirrhosis. Despite its growing prevalence – affecting an estimated four in ten adults worldwide – SLD remains largely absent from EU health strategies, including Healthier Together.The lack of attention to liver health within the broader NCD agenda risks leaving a major gap in prevention and care, which in turn could significantly undermine efforts to reduce the impact of chronic diseases across Europe. A more integrated approach that links obesity, metabolic health and liver disease prevention is urgently needed.Listen to this Euractiv Hybrid Conference to explore how the EU can strengthen its response to NCDs, ensure obesity is addressed as a key risk factor, and integrate under-recognised conditions such as SLD into a more holistic approach to NCD policy. A larger and more robust force in Haiti could help “turn the tide” against murderous gangs and give Haitians hope for the future, according to the UN's designated expert on the human rights situation in the Caribbean country, William O'Neill.Up to 90 per cent of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince is controlled by numerous gangs who murder with impunity and take hostages for ransom.A UN-backed Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) has been unable to stem the violence, but it is hoped the transition to a new, larger and better equipped Gang Suppression Force could prove decisive.UN News's Daniel Dickinson asked Mr. O'Neill how important it is to establish the new force.

About 40% of today's students work full time, while another 40% are at least 25 years old, with many coming from low-income families. Today's complex world of work increasingly calls for advanced skills and education. As a society, we have to help more people obtain quality learning that's available to all. Lumina Foundation has an idea, embracing a national goal that by 2025, 60% of working-age adults will have a college degree, industry-recognized certification or other credential of value. Right now, we are at just over 50 percent, and we need to better understand who has access to higher education and who is succeeding in this system. In 1942, 12 year old Calvin Graham, already having left his crowded home and abusive stepfather, walked into a US Naval Recruiting Office with a few faked documents, bypassed the dental check which would have revealed his 12 year old teeth, and was signed into the US Navy. After completing basic training he was assigned to the brand new Battleship South Dakota, and soon found himself serving as a gunner in the middle of some of the Pacific War's most intense carrier battles. He was wounded by shrapnel in the jaw when his gun turret was struck by a 500 lb. bomb- but survived- and when the ship returned for repairs he had only a few days to enjoy the praise before his mo0ther saw him in a newsreel and reported him.
