Chicago news anchor Sylvia Perez sits down with Gaby Moreno, a Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer to discuss her upbringing, career, and experience seeing Rotary's impact up close. Rotary recently named Moreno as one of its first Rotary Ambassadors in recognition of her commitment to using her voice to make a difference.
Episode 300: When Gaby Moreno was announced as an official showcasing artist at this Fall's Americanafest, it stirred a tingle of recognition in me, but I had to do some digging to realize what a big deal it was. The Guatemala-born, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter became part of the Watkins Family Hour at Largo in LA and a regular on Chris Thile's Live From Here Show. She's released nine records, winning two Latin Grammy Awards - and an album Grammy Award earlier this year. She's internationally known as one of the most versatile and enthralling voices in any genre, but her latest Dusk, produced by Nashville's Dan Knobler, brings a needed Spanglish influence to the Americana community. In this magical hour, we talk about what inspired her eclectic outlook and her many collaborations, including working with the legendary Van Dyke Parks.

After decades of fighting abuse from San Diego's vice squad and finally securing dancers' rights, Kata Pierce-Morgan turned her “stripper energy” to a new creative outlet – producing shows for San Diego International Fringe Festival that tap into Les Girls history. Plus sex worker-activists turn to Fringe Festivals to use art to advocate for sex worker rights and to challenge stereotypes. In this chapter: Kata Pierce-Morgan, poet, activist, former dancer, current owner of Les Girls Theater Kate McGrew/Lady Grew, singer, activist, sex worker, Fringe artist Rachel Atlas, Fringe artist, activist, sex worker Kit Marsh, Fringe artist, sex worker Cherida Fraser, Fringe artist Credits: Beth Accomando, Producer/Host/Video editor Christopher Maue, Videographer/Lighting Designer Kurt Kohnen, Sound Designer Phil Nenna, Designer/Animator Sanns Dixon, Videographer Roland Lizarondo, Videographer Amy Fan and Gaby Moreno, Assistants David Washburn, Editor More information at kpbs.org/stripperenergy #strippers #adultentertainment #lesgirlstheater #sandiegohistory #vice #policeabuse #fighting back #sexworkers #fringefestivals #sandiegointernationalfringe #newzealandfringe #ireland #newzealand Explicit content.
Gaby Moreno is a Grammy-award-winning Guatemalan singer-songwriter and guitarist whose bilingual lyrics take listeners on vivid journeys. She was awarded the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album in 2023 for X Mi (Vol. 1). Her decades-spanning career is defined by a tenderness for her home of Guatemala, as told through folklore in her songwriting. Her ninth studio LP, Dusk, released earlier this year, is a testament to her evolution and transition, from light to dark and dawn to dusk. The desire for change and exploration found in Gaby's Sagitarrius sun is rounded by its placement in the Fourth House, associated with family and tradition — manifesting in both her attachment to memory and her constant refinement of archiving the ache and triumph of her ancestors through her music. Gaby joins host Isa Nakazawa to discuss how the presence of each element in her chart conjures balance.
[originally published on Patreon March 19, 2024] I pick back up with Efraín Ríos Montt's pacification plan known as Victoria 82, informally known as Fusiles y Frijoles, or Rifles and Beans. Montt established secret courts, a scorched-earth military campaign and utilized counterinsurgency troops. I share my personal experience with survivors of these incidents. I also read from a work of fiction, Senselessness by Horacio Castellanos Moya which more eloquently captures what it is like to be confronted by these stories. Then, I read an extended passage from a truth and reconciliation report from just one of the many massacres of Finca San Francisco Nenton in Huehuetenango. I discuss political opposition to the genocide. I also discuss the concentration camp program created with help from Israeli military advisors - they spoke frankly about the Palestinianisation of Guatemala. Further, the Israeli military provided arms and even a computer system which was used to compile death lists comparable to those of IBM and the Holocaust. In August 1983, Montt was deposed in a bloodless military coup. I discuss Guatemala in the broader Cold War and World Anti-Communist League context. Then, I examine Montt's mental state during La Violencia and raise the serious possibility that he was a controlled asset. I trace the history of La Iglesia El Verbo, Gospel Outreach, this broader Dominionist theology, and Pat Robertson's investment portfolio. To end the episode, I lay out the claims of an anonymous internet commenter who claims to have been present at Montt's baptism in Eureka, California, and for other darker events. More on Guatemala's mineral rights soon. Songs: Selections from Uaxuctum by Giacinto Scelsi Luna de Xelajú performed by Gaby Moreno & Oscar Isaac
After more than a decade of sexual harassment, coerced encounters, and psychological abuse by San Diego vice, Kata Pierce-Morgan and her fellow Les Girls dancers were ready to tap into their stripper energy and fight back. If polite society and the legal system were not going to help them end the abuse, then they would take matters into their own hands. If no one was willing to believe a bunch of strippers, then Kata would install video cameras to prove their claims. If the rat pack cops thought they could terrorize them into silence, then they would find their voice and speak up. And if internal affairs refused to take their complaints seriously, then Kata would simply have to come up with a new game plan. Prepare for Chapter 5, Fighting Back, or the Rise of Stripper Energy. In this chapter: Kata Pierce-Morgan, poet, activist, former dancer, current owner of Les Girls Theater John Barriage, lawyer who represented James Morgan and Les Girls in 1980s Kate Yavenditti, lawyer and co-founder of the County's Task Force on Domestic Violence, also involved with WomenOccupySan Diego and the National Lawyers Guild. How dare a stripper, a fringe woman, not stay silent and compliant as vice officers sexually harassed her ... and worse. And how dare Kata Pierce-Morgan challenge stereotypes and fight back? But Les Girls Theater had a history of fighting back starting with its owner James Morgan who spoke up against police abuse to a county Grand Jury in the hopes that the California Attorney General would crack down on the San Diego Police Department's Rat Pack. Kata was a midwestern Catholic girl who believed, like her late husband Jim, in not being a silent bystander. Even if you were a dancer at Les Girls. After all, Jim had won a groundbreaking victory over censorship in the late 1960s. But as the 60s became the 70s, Kata and her fellow dancers faced an onslaught of police raids, nude interrogations and coerced encounters. Of all the ways to discover a song, there are few more inviting and experiential than driving down a desert highway and hearing something come in over the radio—a real life transmission. That was the case for host Jason P. Woodbury driving to Tucson, Arizona, in 2022, when “Puedas Decir De Mi,” by Adrian Quesada featuring Gaby Moreno came over the airwaves of KCXI Tucson community radio. Quesada is best known as one-half of The Black Pumas, his duo with singer/songwriter Eric Burton. But Quesada's musical output is varied: he's worked with Brownout, a Latin hard rock-tinged outfit, Grupo Fantasma, Adrian Younge, and many more. In 2022, he released his debut solo album, Boleros Psicodélicos, followed that same year by Jaguar Sound. He joined us to discuss his trajectory, his worldwide success, his roots in hip-hop, and much more. Transmissions is produced in partnership with Talkhouse Podcast Network. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its Patreon supporters. Next week on Transmissions? Future soul singer Eddie Chacon takes us back in time and to Ibiza for a conversation focused around his incredible new album Sundown. Subscribe to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions so you don't miss it. This transmission is concluded.
