In this study, we dive deep into the mysterious figure of Melchizedek and how he points to Jesus as our eternal High Priest. Drawing from a brief historical encounter in Genesis 14 and King David's prophetic poetry in Psalm 110, we unpack how the New Testament beautifully unlocks these ancient mysteries in Hebrews 7. We look closely at Melchizedek's titles as the "King of Righteousness" and "King of Peace," exploring how he is a "type" or "picture" pointing to Christ. By comparing the strict limits of the historical Levitical priesthood against the endless, unchangeable priesthood of Jesus (in the order of Melchizedek), we see exactly why Christ stands as our supreme High Priest who secures a better hope and a better covenant for us all. The ultimate take away from Hebrews 7 (and a study of Melchizedek) is that the middleman is completely gone, we can approach God's throne boldly! Under the old system, an imperfect human priest stood between us and God, keeping a stark distance between the Creator and the people. However, when Jesus offered Himself as a perfect, once-for-all sacrifice, the temple veil was torn from top to bottom, symbolizing the open access to God through Christ. Because Jesus is our eternal High Priest continuously interceding for us at the right hand of the Father, we never have to approach God with hesitation, shame, or fear. As we are reminded in Hebrews 4.16, we can come boldly to the throne of grace, completely confident that we will receive exactly the help we need. This episode works through the story of Melchizedek, the mysterious king and priest who appears briefly in Genesis 14 to bless Abraham after battle. Who was he? Why does he matter? And what does he have to do with Jesus? The episode traces a thread from Genesis through the Psalms, into the Gospels, and lands in the book of Hebrews, where Paul unpacks why Jesus operates in a priesthood that sits entirely outside the old law. Unlike the Levitical priests who served year after year, offering sacrifices that had to be repeated, Jesus stepped into the role of High Priest once and completely, making a way for anyone to come directly to God. Let's dive in! TODAY'S DEVOTION: The most real, the most essential part of your identity is your soul. Our flesh, our bodies, they fail, and one day we'll be no more as they are, but our soul will remain. Our soul is eternal. Hebrews 6/19 says, this hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. It's so easy for us to lose ourselves in this storm filled world. But the truest thing about your soul is found and anchored in your union with Christ. This anchor is held fast in the most secure and private and intimate of places with God. The Holy of Holies is being described here. In chapter 6 verse 19 and 20, he goes on to say, it leads us through the curtain into God's inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. The anchor of our souls leads us through the curtain into the inner sanctuary, that intimate, private, secure, safe place. The truest thing about you is found and is at rest with God. God has set aside this place to reveal himself to you and to reveal you to you. He wants you to know who you really are. So don't let the world determine the truest thing about you. Don't let your past determine the truest thing about you. Oh, he has established that already, and you are anchored securely with him. As you walk with God and spend time in his presence, he will reveal your soul to you. So come to him recognizing that you're anchored in him, allowing him to lead you into that most secure of places. Right with him, There you'll find the life, the hope, the courage, the strength that you need to move forward in this life with joy. And that's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... JOURNAL PROMPTS: Here are three journaling prompts based on today's readings from Hebrews chapters 5 through 8: Understanding Priesthood and Sacrifice Reflect on the concept of Jesus as the perfect High Priest who offered himself as a sacrifice for our sins. How does this understanding influence your faith and daily life? Consider journaling about any areas where you struggle to accept or fully grasp the magnitude of this sacrifice and what steps you can take to deepen your understanding. Spiritual Maturity Hebrews 5:12-14 talks about the need for believers to move from spiritual infancy (milk) to maturity (solid food). Take some time to reflect on your spiritual journey. Are there aspects of your faith where you feel you are still "drinking milk"? What steps can you take to grow and mature in those areas? Write about your plan for seeking deeper spiritual understanding and growth.
