Today's episode is a rare one where the subject is not a specific documentary (although there is some rock doc talk). We're joined by returning guest Steven Hyden to discuss his new book "There Was Nothing You Could Do: Bruce Springsteen's “Born in the U.S.A.” and the End of the Heartland" and all things Bruce. Steven previously joined us to review "Pearl Jam Twenty". Rock Docs is a Treble Media Podcast hosted by David Lizerbram & Andrew Keatts Twitter: @RockDocsPod Instagram: @RockDocsPod Cover Art by N.C. It's our first two-fer episode. Today we discuss "Urgh! A Music War", a film that showcases 30+ new wave/postpunk era acts in concert, directed by Derek Burbidge and released in 1981. This is a cult favorite with loads of great stuff, and unlike any other films that we've discussed on the show. We get into some of the featured artists, including The Police, XTC, The Go-Gos, John Cooper Clarke, Gary Numan, Klaus Nomi, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and many more. Plus: "Gaga: Five Foot Two", an authorized Lady Gaga documentary, directed by Chris Moukarbel, released on Netflix in 2017. This movie shows Gaga as the puts together the "Joanne" album and preps for her Super Bowl Halftime Show. Plus Plus: we're joined by Very Special Guest Annie Zaleski, who tells us about her upcoming book on Lady Gaga and discusses both films, along with Duran Duran and loads of other fun stuff. Today's documentary is Pearl Jam Twenty. The documentary was directed by Cameron Crowe (director of Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything, and, relevant to today's episode, Singles) and released in 2011. For this episode we are joined by Very Special Guest Steven Hyden, author of the fantastic recent book "Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation". Steven is the author of several other excellent books about music, he writes a regular music column at Uproxx, and he is the co-host of Indiecast. How does it do it all? Who knows, but we're happy that he took the time to join us to discuss Pearl Jam, this documentary, and his fantastic new book. J and Drew tackle the 2011 Cameron Crowe music documentary Pearl Jam Twenty. Spoiler: Brother J doesn't like Neil Young. Also: maybe Cameron Crowe wasn't the best choice of director. Housekeeping begins at 1:10:00 during which they discuss living next to a park, Apple Music, Bill Gates' nuclear reactor, the concept of a “gasless generator,” and writing pens. On this episode, The Concert Goers talk about Pearl Jam's 2011 tour PJ20, a tour that was meant to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. Now, 10 years on, G shares his memories from the first time he saw Pearl Jam live.
Insignificance (S6.Ep7) LOTS of political talk in this episode about a political song. Who could've guessed? We've got Curtis Hames with us to figure out “Insignificance,” being popular, and another PEARL JAM TWENTY index mistake… “Insignificance” on Apple Music: https://apple.co/3ryGb4C “Insignificance” on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/3MMTT8PtN1C0SkAJdHdnOK?si=3cf8270d7a644c2f Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BetterBandPod Twitter: https://twitter.com/BetterBandPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/betterbandpod Ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/brandenp The Better Band Podcast is produced by ListenUpReno.Com & Branden Palomo, and published using a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 License. I bet you're just as surprised as I am? Warren has only gone and done a bonus episode. He recorded this one with Greger, an über Pearl Jam fan. Greger has been within touching distance of Eddie Vedder, he has had some of Eddie's red wine and nabbed Mike McCready's guitar pick. To top it all off, Greger has worked with Cameron Crowe on the Pearl Jam Twenty film! Warren is star struck as Greger guides them through the PJ minutia and fills in the gaps in Warren's Pearl Jam memories. He keeps things on track as Warren tries to recall what happened at the eight or so PJ concerts he has been to (and the ones they both attended, but did not know each other back then) but Warren's recollections are hazy. That's rock n roll. This was an opportunity of a life time for the pair and every grungy detail has been captured on tape. There's even a hidden track. D'oh that's not hidden anymore now is it? A major highlight for me is when Greger describes how he feels at a Pearl Jam concert. It can only be true love. This is your time, this is your place, we're good to go. Thank you for listening. "What I generally say is I make films about culture. That's kind of my default. And by culture, it's not only film and art and music, but it's food and clothing and language and media and the culture of politics. And I'm much more interested in culture, which I define as how we define ourselves and how we define other people. That's what makes up culture, and those are the kinds of questions I always find incredibly interesting and compelling and, in a way, kind of the great underappreciated force for empathy and understanding, which is what our jobs are as documentarians is to foster empathy and understanding."Morgan Neville is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. Icarus, the Academy Award winning documentary, is a film about duality, told in a very unconventional manner. When editor Kevin Klauber (of Pearl Jam Twenty, Harmontown, and Brew Dogs) was brought on to the project, it appeared to be the "Super Size Me"of sports-doping. What unravelled in front of him, however, was a piece of filmmaking with much more significant implications. This is the story of how he put it together.

We wrap up our series on Pearl Jam by looking at the band's three most recent albums — 2006's "Pearl Jam," 2009's "Backspacer," and 2013's "Lightning Bolt." For a band whose career often teetered on the brink of dysfunction and chaos, Pearl Jam has settled into a period of stability and relaxed comfort in recent years. Looking ahead, Pearl Jam seems poised to go on forever like the Rolling Stones. To figure out how we got here, Steve talks with Mark Wilkerson, co-author of "Pearl Jam Twenty."

Jeff Bayer and Eric D. Snider watched “Moneyball,” which is about baseball and math, and both critics approve. They were less enthusiastic about “Dolphin Tale,” though Eric thinks it’s worth taking the kids to. Jeff was down on the documentary “Pearl Jam Twenty,” and Eric didn’t see it because he doesn’t like the rock ‘n’ roll that you young people today listen to.
