New ep, who dis.....? Ha ha, had to put that in as it was very recently revealed (as in, 2 minutes before typing this) that Dylan absolutely HATES the "new phone who dis" bit, so naturally, I wouldn't be a big brother without exploiting things that he finds traumatic. Speaking of, we open some old wounds in one of our tangents about a time I traumatized Dylan by not appreciating GTA5; which, I don't really recall at all.... What I DO recall is that in this ep we discuss Killing Zoe and Kubo And The Two Strings, and we could not disagree about them more. This is our most contentious episode yet with heated words actually exchanged (I mean, not TOO heated, we stay respectful) but if you found it annoying that we were always too agreeable, this is the episode for you! Unless you're French, because we rip a bit on them too. Mon dieu. Vote in our polls on Twitter @FileUnderPod, & e-mail us at FileUnderPod@gmail.com.

More information will be available in the promo before today’s review. Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Today’s movie is MISSING LINK, the Laika Entertainment animated adventure written and directed by Chris Butler. At the turn of the 19thcentury, Mr. Link (Zach Galifianakis), the last of the Sasquatch in the Western United States, recruits aspiring explorer Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) to transport him to Shangri-La, the mythical home of the Yeti in the Himalayas. They are joined by Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), who has the map, but also pursued by rivals intent on making sure they fail in their quest. No spoilers. As one might imagine from someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, I was a huge fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000, or MST3K. I wasn’t able to watch it regularly, a combination of early bedtimes and intermittent access on our local television channels, but every episode was pure magic. The recent reboot with Jonah Ray has been equally enjoyable, although it’s been tough to get through the immense number of episodes they’ve released. However, one of my favorites from Season 11 – The Return was for an absolutely bonkers, but sasquatch-laden environmental film called CRY WILDERNESS. And Jonah cracks a joke when they show a picture of a missing link character, labeling him Australopithecus Galifianakis. So, I guess MISSING LINK was an inevitable pairing. I’m not actually sure how I missed seeing this film in the theaters. As you might guess, and can verify in my review for last year’s THE MAN WHO KILLED HITLER AND THEN THE BIGFOOT (Episode #533), I’m a huge fan of cryptozoology, and for Bigfoot in particular. Mr. Link is voiced by Zach Galifianakis, one of my favorite comedians. It is produced by Laika and is an epic adventure set at the turn of last century, written by Chris Butler, the genius behind PARANORMAN and the story for KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, one of my favorite films from 2016. Pretty much everything I could ever want from a film, and I missed it. Along with everyone else, apparently, because MISSING LINK bombed at the box office, but did end up taking Best Animated Feature at this year’s Golden Globes, shocking pretty much everyone but those who saw the film. Laika is one of my favorite animation houses, specializing in a combination of stop motion and CGI, starting with their breakout cult favorite, CORPSE BRIDE with Tim Burton, then following up with 2009’s CORALINE, based on Neil Gaiman’s story. In fact, Laika’s filmography is a triumph of placing story first in such a way so that the delicate and detailed animation never has to compensate. The story for MISSING LINK is above average, melding together a bunch of awesome and intriguing ideas and characters, playing very well with emotional content and a genuine sense of comradery among the adventurers. I also love the larger lore suggested about the sasquatch/yeti/missing link that gets developed. The real star is the animation, which is top notch, especially the amazing series of long-takes that will leave you questioning whether it is still being captured frame by frame. Stop-motion animation doesn’t get nearly the credit it deserves, an art form that takes patience and precision. Every film usually includes some behind-the-scenes footage during the credits to show just how intricate the process can be. In particular, everyone should be astounded by the adventurers riding through the Indian jungle on an elephant, as I was equally astounded by some of the incredible sequences in KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS. Everything has a sense of plasticity, despite being a stop-motion picture at its core. Could this film have the same impact being 100% CGI? Perhaps, but Laika’s animation and process is hardly a gimmick, specifically because of their commitment to story. The voice work is pretty good, with Hugh Jackman, Zach Galifianakis, and Zoe Saldana handling the lion’s share. Galifianakis takes the gold with a nice melding of his natural expressiveness, combined well with the character’s animation, as well as the general demeanor of the character. Jackman and Saldana struggle with two relatively shallow characters, who have predictable story arcs. The rest of the cast is a combination of characters and caricatures, which may delight or anger depending on the viewer. In fact, I really wish MISSING LINK had the same courage as KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS to really deal with complex emotions and feelings, particularly about identity and place in society. We learn pretty quickly that MISSING LINK is a journey story, both externally towards Shangri-La, and internally for each character. Whereas KUBO had a depth to the lead characters, particularly the title character, MISSING LINK feels like it’s... well, missing something in most of its characters, perhaps confusing detailed characters with complex characters. I like the whole film. I even love some parts of it. In a particularly weak year for animation, MISSING LINK only barely stands out, but is still quite worth a viewing. MISSING LINK is a fun animated adventure from Chris Butler and Laika Entertainment. Using an incredible stop-motion process, viewers are treated to a fun journey set during the turn of last century, with a relatively safe and predictable story along the way. Despite its box office troubles, everyone who enjoys animation should absolutely check out today’s film. Rotten Tomatoes: 89% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 68 One Movie Punch: 8.0/10 MISSING LINK (2019) is rated PG and is currently playing on Hulu.

Inspired by the new Laika stop-motion marvel KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, we look back at another unconventional children's movie, made by unconventional creators pushing the envelop of their craft: Jim Henson's live-action puppet fantasy THE DARK CRYSTAL. In this half, we talk about how Henson and conceptual designer Brian Froud created their high-fantasy world, and wonder whether there's room for a satisfying story among all the visual wizardry. Plus, we talk over some of the other suggestions we got for KUBO pairings from our listeners. First, Jack and Andrew take a look back at this summer of movies for 2016... and why it was so thoroughly mediocre and forgettable (and we also quote and mention an article written by Jessica Ritchey, "Hollywood Gave Up on You", which you can read at the link below. Then, Jack and Andrew talk about the movies they've seen in the three weeks(!) since the past full three-part episode, and the movies stretch from the new releases from Werner Herzog and Laika animation studios (the makers of Coraline and Paranorman), to the beginning of feature epics with D.W. Griffith's films from 1915 and 1916. Also, more Star Trek and Wes Anderson! Get ready to dig in to a full course meal of cinema that involves plenty of wages - some of those by the makers of Ben-Hur! Movies discussed (starts 21:40 in): 1) DANCIN' IT'S ON! (2015) 2) WAR ROOM (2015) 3) THE BIRTH OF A NATION (1915) 4) INTOLERANCE (1916) 5) KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (2016) 6) SAUSAGE PARTY (2016) 7) STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996) 8) THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU (2004) 9) THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES (2013) 10) LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD (2016) http://www.rogerebert.com/balder-and-dash/hollywood-gave-up-on-you-the-summer-movies-of-2016 wagesofcinema@gmail.com
On this week's episode of The Harold and Maudecast we have two more Now Playing reviews of films we had high hopes for that turned out to be Duds, KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS and LIGHTS OUT. Also, Jake previews his review of Batman the Telltale Series Ep 1, Realm of Shadows as well as upcoming interviews with the stars of the indie horror film, THE NEIGHBORS.
This week on Now Playing Reviews, KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, a new stop-motion animated featured from Oscar nominated Director of THE BOXTROLLS, Travis Knight whose other credits include PARANORMAN and CORALINE. Kubo (Art Parkinson - Rickon from Game of Thrones) enlists the help of a talking monkey (Charlize Theron) and a knightly beetle (Matthew McConaughey) on his quest to find his father's magical suit of armor. Along the way they encounter danger in the form of his wicked Aunts (Rooney Mara) and evil spirit grandfather (Ralph Fiennes). This film was an incredible disappointment. The promise of an entire feature in stop-motion animation was so intriguing but the story does not live up to the spectacular visuals. Additionally, the character voices seem picked for sheer star power vs story aid or character arc. Epic Fail on that front. Still, some Justice for the sheer spectacle and beauty of the animate. 6/10

Two of your three favorite millennials are here this week to talk about their love for Steven Spielberg, one of the greatest filmmakers in history. Anya and Willoughby list their top 3 Spielberg movies and dive deep into Spielberg's master craftsmanship as a director. Plus, Willoughby recommends HELL OR HIGH WATER and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS and Anya really, really likes Elliot from PETE'S DRAGON.
Kailey's contract at NZIFF has finished so she can start reviewing again - so she starts by catching up with the new Ghostbusters. Dan gets back in to the commercial release scene with Laika's Kubo and the Two Strings. And the pair wrap-up this year's NZIFF highlights.
The show opens this week with a conversation about director Werner Herzog’s very unique perspective on life. Following a shout out to one of Dave’s favorite YouTubers and a discussion about Evan’s book, Your ‘80s Movie Guide to Better Living, the guys dig into the week’s new releases. First up is Kris, who discusses Herzog’s documentary LO AND BEHOLD REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD (at 9:09). The filmmaker is more aware of his personal brand, so he features himself prominently in it, but it’s still a fascinating piece about the integration between humans and machines. Next, Evan reviews WAR DOGS (at 19:32). Even though it obviously rips off of GOODFELLAS, the movie is worth seeing because it’s funny, has great music, and showcases a tremendous lead performance by Jonah Hill. Lastly, Kris concludes with KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (at 36:20), which captivates with its stop motion animation and its take on ancient religion. Every place the characters go in the film and everything they do is enjoyable to watch, even if you’re aware the journey that they’re on.

In this second episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with none other than singer/producer and host Nick Lachey (1:13) about headlining this summer’s MY2K Tour with 98Degrees, as well as taking a journey behind the artists and albums that served as the foundation of his musical career, plus, how television became an unexpected career changer. I also go toe to toe with WWE’s SummerSlam event (24:13) happening this Sunday. My good friend Andrew Goldstein joins me to discuss what fans can expect this weekend, and the bigger picture on whether the WWE can continue its ratings dominance in a digital streaming world. And I'll also recap Baz Luhrmann’s new multicultural Netflix musical THE GET DOWN (43:31), along with the most relevant entertainment stories of the week,as well as share my review of KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS, a movie I believe is the frontrunner to win the Best Animated Film at next year's Oscar Awards (41:42). Hint, it comes out this weekend! Delving deeper on our interview with Nick Lachey, he is one of the more versatile people in show business. He’s the lead singer for 98 Degrees who has sold over 10M albums worldwide, an actor who has appeared on film and on the small screen, a producer of hit programs, a host for various popular TV shows and a savvy business entrepreneur. But what is most admirable about Nick is his longevity in the business. He always seems to take on projects that keep him relevant, fresh and somehow grounded. We discuss how he's managed to stay so humble despite so much praise and attention in his career, how Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Dave Grohl left such a mark on him, his experience on being a part of the legendary Motown record label, meeting Michael Jackson, a deep breakdown of his "2.0" album and tracks, plus, what a discussion on who and what makes a great lead singer of a boy band.
