"What I generally say is I make films about culture. That's kind of my default. And by culture, it's not only film and art and music, but it's food and clothing and language and media and the culture of politics. And I'm much more interested in culture, which I define as how we define ourselves and how we define other people. That's what makes up culture, and those are the kinds of questions I always find incredibly interesting and compelling and, in a way, kind of the great underappreciated force for empathy and understanding, which is what our jobs are as documentarians is to foster empathy and understanding."Morgan Neville is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. For over twenty years he has been making films about music and cultural subjects including Troubadours, Search and Destroy and three Grammy-nominated films: Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, Muddy Waters Can't Be Satisfied, and Johnny Cash's America. His non-music films include The Cool School, Steinbeck and Shotgun Freeway: Drives Thru Lost L.A.. Neville has also produced many documentaries, including Pearl Jam Twenty, Crossfire Hurricane and Beauty is Embarrassing. In 2014, 20 Feet From Stardom, won numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Documentary. His next film, Best of Enemies, won an Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary at the News and Documentary Emmy Awards in 2017. The film was also shortlisted for the 2016 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Recent projects include Ugly Delicious, Abstract: The Art of Design, They'll Love Me When I'm Dead, and Won't You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary about Fred Rogers which was released by Focus Features in 2018 and has become one of the best reviewed and highest grossing documentaries of all time. · tremoloproductions.com · www.creativeprocess.info

Amelia Raley grew up in Northwest Arkansas, the capital of Tyson Foods, where it was a regular occurrence to see chickens on the side of the road, who had fallen from transport trucks. She was also nearby the University of Arkansas' animal experimental farms, where she witnessed cattle testing techniques and had first-had exposure to the animal agriculture industry. After a period of time, Amelia was exposed to veganism by accident, while attending the University of Oregon, and today runs one of Austin's coolest shops, Sweet Ritual. Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) tells the provocative story of legendary director Orson Welles during the final 15 years of his life. No longer the “wonder boy” of Citizen Kane, Welles in 1970 was an artist in exile looking for his Hollywood comeback with a project called The Other Side of the Wind. For years, Welles worked on his project about an aging film director trying to finish his last great movie. Welles shot the picture guerrilla-style in chaotic circumstances with a devoted crew of young dreamers, all the while struggling with financiers and fate. In 1985, Welles died, leaving as his final testament the most famous unfinished film in movie history. The negative stayed in a vault for decades until now. With revelatory new insights from Welles collaborators including Peter Bogdanovich, Frank Marshall, Oja Kodar and daughter Beatrice Welles, They'll Love Me When I'm Dead is the untold final chapter of one of the greatest careers in film history: brilliant, innovative, defiant and unbowed. Director Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Won't You Me My Neighbor, Cool School) joins us for a conversation about his hurly-burly look at the making of a ragged masterpiece by cinema’s greatest auteur. An interview with MORGAN NEVILLE the director THE COOL SCHOOL - a documentary about the Ferus Gallery which from 1957 to 1966 was the catalyst of modern art in Los Angeles. Operating out of a small storefront, the gallery hosted debut exhibitions and served as a general launching point for Ed Kienholz, Ed Ruscha, Craig Kauffman, Wallace Berman, Ed Moses and Robert Irwin, among many other artists. By the time it closed in 1966, the gallery had also played a role in solidifying the careers of many of New York's brightest talents, including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Donald Judd, Frank Stella, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns building an art scene from scratch and transforming the cultural climate of the West Coast. Neville is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who specializes in history and cultural subjects. Through a series of films on important music subjects (including The Brill Building, Sam Phillips and Sun Records, Nat King Cole, Brian Wilson, Leiber & Stoller, The Highwaymen and Burt Bacharach), Neville has documented stories of songwriters and producers who helped shape 20th-century music, including the Grammy-nominated Muddy Waters Can't Be Satisfied and the Emmy-winning Hank Williams: Honky Tonk Blues, both of which aired on PBS's American Masters series as well as Channel 4/UK and the BBC's Arena series. The Cool School will air on KCET Independent Lens Wednesday, June 11, at 8:00pm.
