What makes a life truly meaningful? In this two-part series, we wrestle with the tension between the human desire for significance and the reality of our smallness. From the tiniest atom to the largest galaxy, creation points us to something greater—God Himself. Scripture tells us that everything is from Him, through Him, and for Him. Our purpose isn’t found in ourselves, but in connection with the One who holds it all together. We're sticking with a show from recent memory as we inch closer to the kickoff of the 2025 tour for Pearl Jam, and that's exactly what we'll cover tonight - a tour kickoff. It took them nine years to return back to the home of the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul, and to make it up to the north star fans it was the first of a two night stay. Javier was in attendance for this show, so he'll share stories and recount memories from the night, including the surprise opener to get the tour year started in a big way. The phrase "set the tone" gets tossed around a lot around here when a song can be an indication of how the night would go, but in the case of a song like Indifference, opening with it set the tone for the entire tour year. It was the indication that everything was going to be on the table, whether it was messing around with song placements, to playing songs that have been no where near the band's radar in years. A song like Insignificance that got played at this show for the first time since 2016 is a great example of how far they were willing to push their limits. Even as the tour went on, we got to hear tunes like God's Dice, Green Disease, Marker In The Sand, Undone, Out Of My Mind, Unemployable and Who You Are get added to the mix. So in retrospect, Indifference was a much bigger moment than the shock value of beginning the show with it instead of ending. We'll also spend a lot of time on this version of Love Boat Captain. This song was ranked the #1 moment of the 2023 tour on the Live On 4 Legs countdown, and it's due to it's heartfelt tribute to the Hawaii wildfires that ravaged the islands that summer. Check out our discussion on this version about how Ed always meets the moment when it comes to dealing with tragedy, especially one that hit so close to home for him. The Geography of Wrath Part Two Before the LORD Destroyed Sodom Last week, we looked at The Geography of Wrath, a preface to this lesson on the danger of the last watch of the night. “Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere—this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar.” (Ge 13:10) When Lot “lifted up his eyes,” he saw prophetically. Before their destruction, the five cities of the valley enjoyed an Edenic-like climate and prosperity, yet the prophetic phrase “lifted up his eyes” predicts a restoration of that area, which sits in the Arava. Revelation predicts a great miracles of the two witnesses, which helps us to understand "Sodom and Egypt": "And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified." (Re 11:8) What Sodom and Egypt have in common is that those who were saved and set on a path of righteousness (Lot and the Israelites in the wilderness) looked back at what at enslaved them as more to be desired than the Garden of Eden, the authentic Promised Land, that lay before them if they would walk in their salvation. When the bodies of the two witnesses are caught up from Jerusalem, it is a witness to be understood as a last warning to believers who, in those last days, continue to cling to the cargoes of Babylon, who persist in begging to go "by way of Zoar to Egypt" instead of repenting and returning to the righteous walk of salvation epitomized by Avraham. The night is far spent by then. The commercial success of the five cities lured Lot in. The deception was that its fruitfulness “like the Garden” was to be desired over the fruitfulness of the stars promised to Avraham. Lot's wife preferred the deception of luxury with wickedness over the promise of good gifts from above. The Midrash concerning Sodom details how travelers were lured in, then maimed or killed and their goods confiscated. “When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, ‘Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.'” (Ge 19:15) The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar. Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven, and He overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD; and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the valley, and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a furnace. (Ge 19:24-28) Before Adonai destroyed Sodom, he sent warning of the wrath to come. Lot was aware of the blessings promised to Avraham, but he was also aware of the righteous life required for such eternal blessings. Lot chose precarious salvation over a life of obedience and teaching his children after him: “For I have chosen him, so that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has spoken about him.” (Ge 18:19) Lot was troubled by the wickedness of Sodom, but not enough to forfeit living in it: “and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men…” (2 Pe 2:7) It took the wrath of Adonai to remove him, not to abundant life, but bare salvation. “Insignificance” is the meaning of the small city Zoar in which Lot requested to live, and so was his contribution to the Kingdom of Adonai compared to Avraham. Avraham viewed the valley of Sodom and saw the smoke of the cities ascending like the smo...

Send me a Text Message!Personal power isn't something external—it's the ability to trust, believe in, and fully own who you are from the inside out. In this episode, Mike Kitko shares his personal journey from self-destruction and internal bankruptcy to radical self-mastery and empowerment. He breaks down the four voices that shape your life—three that disempower you and one that fuels your highest potential. Most people try to chase wealth, success, and external validation to cover up deep-seated feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, and insignificance, but true power comes from dissolving these inner conflicts, not masking them. If you've ever felt like you're not enough, not worthy, or stuck in patterns of self-doubt and struggle, this episode will challenge you to look within and step into the highest version of yourself.Key TakeawaysYour external world is a reflection of your internal state. If you don't feel powerful inside, no amount of wealth, success, or validation will change that. The three voices of survival mode—Insecurity, Inadequacy, and Insignificance—keep you trapped in fear and self-doubt. Recognizing them is the first step toward dissolving them. The voice of inspiration is the only voice that leads to true power. It tells you that you are enough, worthy, and capable of anything you desire.Personal power comes from self-mastery. Healing internal conflicts and rewriting the stories you tell yourself is how you unlock real freedom, wealth, and success. You were not put on this earth to play small. The world needs you to step into your power and make an impact.Notable Quotes“Personal power isn't built by chasing success—it's built by mastering yourself.”“Insecurity, inadequacy, and insignificance are the voices that keep you small. When you silence them, you become unstoppable.”“Nothing outside of you can fix what's happening inside of you. If you don't believe in yourself now, no achievement or external success will change that.”“True freedom, wealth, and success are unlocked when you own who you are and step fully into your personal power.”“Are you personally powerful, or are you still living in the feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, and insignificance?”Music Credit: "What's Left of Me" by Wes Hoffman & FriendsClick here to access details about the February 21-22, 2025 in-person Choose Your Destiny Live Intensive just outside of St. Louis, MO.Click here to visit our website to access free tools and resources, our Meditation Bundle, upcoming events, and our coaching service offerings. My Social Media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mikekitkoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mike_kitkoTiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mikekitkoSubscribe to my YouTube: / @mikekitkoMike Kitko is an executive self-mastery coach, speaker and author. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him. 9 But we do see Him who was made for a little while lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of His suffering death crowned with glory and honor, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone. Do you feel small, like a nobody from nowhere? Welcome to the Daily Devo. I am Vince Miller. We are in a brand new series on 1 Samuel. As I mentioned yesterday, we will do an overview of the chapter on Mondays and then, for the following six days, a closer look at that chapter. The theme we are looking at in chapter one is the six people who influenced Samuel's life. The first of these is Elkanah, his father. What's interesting about Elkanah is that he is a nobody from nowhere. We know little about him and his father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, all named in the text. Here are verses 1-3. There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. He had two wives. The name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other, Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. — 1 Samuel 1:1-3 What does stand out when we read this text is that Elkanah had two wives. This is such a glaring observation that we should probably address it. Many of you know he's not the only man in the Bible who had more than one wife. Several prominent men in the Old Testament, like Abraham, Jacob, David, Solomon, and others, had more than one wife. There were about three reasons for this: The first apparent reason is personal pleasure and power. Such was the case with Solomon and his over 700 concubines. Second, it's worth noting that in patriarchal societies, unmarried women faced significant challenges in providing for themselves. They were often uneducated and untrained and relied heavily on male family members like fathers, brothers, or husbands for support and protection. Unfortunately, when this was absent, it led to desperate measures, like turning to prostitution or slavery. Therefore, sometimes marriage was a way to rescue a woman, another reason some men had multiple wives. The third reason is the instance here. Elkanah and his first wife, Hannah, were unable to conceive. Therefore, they probably agreed to take another wife (which should sound familiar because Abraham and Sarah did the same thing). Thus, Elkanah took another wife for reasons of family continuity. What is interesting about polygamy is that the Bible does not expressly condemn it. But fellas, before you get any crazy ideas, the Bible is very clear about the prescription of a godly marital relationship: one man with one woman (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6). Like Abraham and Sarah, Elkanah and Hannah inherited problems that stemmed from their lack of faith. That's the bottom line of this situation. They lacked faith in believing God would provide, so they provided for themselves, which is what we do sometimes. When we don't have faith trusting God to provide, we try to provide for ourselves. And when we provide for ourselves, we incur the problems of providing for ourselves and not letting God provide. As we will see further down in chapter one, they incurred family tension, sexual insecurities, competition, contention, and shame. With this in mind, I would like to point out one tiny detail about Elkanah worth our attention: He is an Ephrathite. This area was later known as Bethlehem and became the birthplace of two other great men. This means the Prophet Samuel, King David, and the Messiah were all born in the same tiny, seemingly insignificant town and were great men in the great story of God. I love it when God does stuff like this. I would not put it past God for all three men to be born in the same location. Believers too often fail to see the opportunity for greatness in the small events of our lives. I know I do. With small seeds of faith in insignificant places and from apparent unimportant people, God can produce incredible things. So, if you feel insignificant, inconsequential, like you are standing at an impasse, instead of taking matters into your hands, hold on in faith. Cast your concerns to God. He sees things you do not. Trust in him. Don't get in his way. Great things are birthed in small seeds of faith. God, we bring our small seeds of faith to you today. We confess that, at times, we act like Elkanah, taking matters into our own hands. We recognize that your divine sight sees things that we cannot. Instead of doing things our way today, we are choosing to do them your way—by faith. Strengthen our faith and show us your ways. Do great things with us and through us. Amen. #FaithInSmallBeginnings #TrustGodsTiming #FindingPurpose ASK THIS: How can Elkanah's story inspire us to trust God's timing and provision in our own lives, especially when faced with challenges or uncertainties? In what areas of our lives do we tend to take matters into our own hands, like Elkanah did, instead of relying on God's guidance and provision? How can we surrender those areas to God and walk in faith instead of self-reliance? DO THIS: Pray for faith this week. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me trust in Your timing and provision, even when I feel insignificant or lost. Guide me to surrender my doubts and fears to You, believing that great things can be birthed from small seeds of faith. Amen. PLAY THIS: Give Me Faith.

We stick with the fantasy thing for one more week, but with a different spin, as we examine a pair of films that have more of a "What If?" thing going on. In the first half of our episode we have INSIGNIFICANCE (1985), based on the play of the same name by Terry Johnson and directed here by Nicolas Roeg. We see four almost-unnamed famous people come together in a very interesting way in the late 1950s. Whether you believe the events here could have happened is up to you, but you'll be entranced nonetheless. In Part 2, we'll see another quartet of icons meeting in the early 1960s, in ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI...(2020). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support

This meeting is a little more contentious than in INSIGNIFICANCE, and while this meeting didn't happen, the characters and their reactions have a truthful feel that allows you to believe it would have been exactly like this. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around, we look at love during wartime, as we screen THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (1988), a story that takes place in the late 1960s in Prague and Switzerland. Then we skip back to post-WW2 Poland for COLD WAR (2018). Both films have similar endings but how they get there is vastly different. We'll be looking at Part 3: Failure, Disappointing Others, Insignificance, and Loneliness. We will learn from Psalm 139 about what it means to discover our identity within our relationship with God. This relationship should be primary in our lives. It should be the place where we find purpose and worth. It is through companionship with God that we discover ourselves to be accepted, valued, and loved.

This episode is manhandled by a recurring theme in which Pearl Jam has never attempted prior or since. On a 2006 night in Prague following a very memorable series of shows in Italy, the band balanced a main set sprint with a first encore where five songs all connected. As we are used to sometimes seeing the songs Better Man, Nothingman and Leatherman used together in what has been dubbed "The Man Trilogy", on this night the trilogy expanded it's tribe by adding in Dead Man and Man Of The Hour into what we dub as The Man Pentology. This is a one off instance which was never repeated in this group of five again, and we're excited to share it with you because it's things like this that seem to get forgotten about over time. Especially at a show that was not played in America. As mentioned, this is one of the fastest main sets you'll ever witness from the modern era clocking in at an hour and 8 minutes. When sets tend to trail on the faster side, that's all thanks to Matt Cameron's furious pace that he brought to the table during shows in this era. Songs like Sad, Daughter and Marker In The Sand were all revved up more than usual, and even the songs that already have that identity  such as Last Exit, Whipping and Animal were all amped up a little more than usual. We'll work quick through this set, but not before taking a moment to feature some of our favorite songs, including a few Filthy Fills tossed in there. Check out this week's Gear Guru segments with Javier where he'll break down a phaser that McCready uses on Life Wasted, to talking about a pedal no longer featured on Stone's board that was implemented in this version of Insignificance. In the book of Judges we see time and again the people of Israel sinning against God, Israel is oppressed by another nation and Israel cries out for deliverance. Time and again God delivers His people using men called Judges. There was nothing out of the ordinary about these men, they were simply willing to be obedient to God and be used by Him to ultimately see God's Glory and Victory come about. They are not essential to the victory but through their obedience they are given the privilege of seeing God's sovereignty and power bring about victory through them.

Continuing onward with our big summer series, this episode focuses on the second night of Pearl Jam's Mansfield Experiment. With the first night under their belt and the crowd coming into the show aware of the premise, the excitement was at an all-time high. While night 1 was a great introduction to the idea, this show's crowd is up for all of the surprises and answers when called upon for the big call and response moments. While there may be no acoustic set like night 3, the energy at this show was palpable, even though Ed came off a bit grumpy due to a lack of sleep the night prior. Although there were a few rarities spliced in to the night before, this show featured a few songs that you almost never heard at Pearl Jam shows during that era. The most eye opening one was Low Light. Of course Low Light has become a common staple of Pearl Jam sets in recent history, but coming into this show it had only been played one other time at the 2001 Bridge School show. We'll spend time breaking down how this turned into a classic song over time, and some of the pieces that aren't found in recent versions. Other big performances that we'll dive into are Release, Animal, Insignificance, Love Boat Captain, Rival, Rearviewmirror and amazing crowd responses on both Alive and Baba O'Riley. Once again, thank you to everyone who sent in their stories. We'll read another batch of them in the episode.
