DESIGN, BUILD, AND MODIFY— In his mid-20s, Scott Dadich told his editor at Texas Monthly, Evan Smith, that he wanted his job.A move like that is a combination of arrogance, youth, and frankly, balls. But you should also know that Dadich is an engineer. And what do engineers do? Well, according to one definition in Merriam-Webster, they “skillfully or artfully arrange for an event or situation to occur.”Of course, you probably know Dadich as an art director and editor, but beyond the titles, he's the kind of guy who builds things, re-engineers them, re-configures them or, more importantly, thinks differently about them.To date, his life's work has been building magazines—marrying words and pictures and combining his love of math and engineering with an eye towards new, unforeseen outcomes in a long career that includes stints at the aforementioned Texas Monthly, and also Wired, Condé Nast Digital—yes, we'll talk iPads—Wired (again) and then on to his own agency, Godfrey Dadich Partners, where he is trying to engineer a new approach to advertising. As a rare creative who has helmed a magazine as an editor-in-chief and art director, Dadich has ideas about how to better create everything, from where digital and print sit in the ecosystem, to the makeup of an actual magazine, and even how teams should fit on the masthead. He has put these ideas to practice on the page, on the web, and also on the streams, in his award-winning Netflix series about the creative process Abstract: The Art of Design, which premiered in 2017.Our conversation with Scott, a rather long one for us, starts right now.—This episode is made possible by our friends at Mountain Gazette, Commercial Type, and Lane Press. In this chat, I learn more about Gevorg's background in Armenia, his work in tourism there and abroad in places like Cambodia, and most impressively to me, some of the unique approaches to tours he offers his visitors. I loved hearing about his creativity in coming up with different ways that travellers can get to know more about a destination and its people, and I'm sure you will too. Four Iranian emigrants talk about their homeland one year after the death of Masha Amini, and Laurent Uhres tells us about the inspiration behind his book. Iran - the situation one year on Masha Amini died on 16 September 2022, aged just 22 years, in the hands of the morality police in Tehran, Iran. Since then, there's been international coverage of the bravery of other women, and men, in the face of the morality police. Mass protests, crackdowns, women defying the defined dress code... things seem to have taken an immovable turn towards personal choice for women. My guests include Vahid Beheshti, an Iranian-born British independent journalist Human Rights Activist, and Director of DorrTV. He went on a 72 day hunger strike camping outside the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to ask the UK government to proscribe the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) an international terrorist organization, now backed by 125 MPs. Shabnam Sabzehi is an Iranian-American activist living in Luxembourg since 2014. Shabnam left Iran aged just 17 and has not been able to return since. After Mahsa Amini's death, Shabnam has been busy amplifying the voices of #WomanLifeFreedom movement. Shabnam is the co-founder of Iranian Diaspora Luxembourg. Nahid Mohammadi worked in the banking sector in Iran for 14 years and talks to us about that experience. She moved to Luxembourg in 2017 to pursue an MSc at the university here. Hooman Eslami brings us the Bahai perspective. His family faced discrimination due to their faith. Bahais are not allowed to study in official universities and so have founded their own, unofficial institution, BIHE University, despite government pressure to shut it down. In 2017, Hooman relocated to Luxembourg to pursue a master's degree, and now PhD at the University of Luxembourg. All of these guests are putting their own life and their families lives at risk in Iran by speaking out. "Creative Convergence" Laurent Uhres is a Luxembourger living in Poland. Throughout his life, Laurent has combined tech knowledge, innovation, education and music in a whole range of careers. This has culminated in his book, Creative Convergence, which delves into the connections between disciplines, demonstrating their interdependence and collective potential for innovation. By examining the fusion of art, science, engineering, and design, the book reveals how interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to remarkable breakthroughs and shape our world. The book presents a rich tapestry of inspiring examples and compelling stories of individuals and teams who have pushed the limits of human knowledge and creativity. The book was inspired by the "Abstract: The Art of Design" episode on Netflix about and with Neri Oxman. Neri introduces "The Krebs Cycle of Creativity," a concept based on the Krebs cycle in biochemistry. Her cycle provides insights into the interplay of science, engineering, design, and art. Consider this episode a general brain dump where I'm thinking about how we show up authentically, and in a way that sustains us. In this episode, I shared how much the work that I do sustains me, and how much I learned about myself in the process. I also shared a bit about Ruth E. Carter's story, a Black American costume designer for film and television, who has found her passion, built a life out of it, was recognized for her brilliance, and was pushed out in front into the world after being the costume designer for Black Panther. In relation to her journey, I also talked about an excerpt from a book by Paulo Coelho that I'm re-reading, which is about how many things in life, personal and professional, are like the bamboo tree–it takes time before your year arrives and with it will come changes that you hadn't dreamed of. Key takeaways: Reflective rumination and getting it out (like what I'm trying to be better at, and not live in my head) are important. Find people who are your people and talk about these things. Take a step back and look at what you have accomplished in life–give yourself enough credit. Own your experiences–nothing that you have experienced on your path is wasted. They discuss how they both watched it differently - Bryant has a security professional and Leah as a true crime 'oh my god the cops are gonna mess this up aren't they' camp. But at the end of it, neither of us are shocked that the security itself was so lacking. This episodes recommendations: Leah: Equalizer (TV Show), Kung Fu, United States of Al, Real Housewives of Salt Lake City (season 2), Titans (HBO Max), Kung Fu (CW), and LuLaRich. Bryant: Formula 1: Drive to Survive, The Dansbury Trashers, Abstract: The Art of Design, United States of Al, All American, How to Be A Cowboy, Friday Night Lights, and Letterkenny. Mohnish Pabrai - Paul Tudor Jones - Ian Spalter - Elad Gil - Eric Ries - Gabriel Weinberg - Sun Tzu - David Kilcullen - Charlie Munger - Mike Malinconico They all say to be brief. We should listen. Brevity is “easy” because time is expensive. Brevity isn’t easy for you, but it’s easy for your counterparts: customers, investors, students, athletes, colleagues, bosses, partners. Everyone. We need to get to the point if we want people to listen. Here are some examples: In Investing Mohnish Pabrai suggests limiting investment theses to one paragraph. Paul Tudor Jones suggests studying journalism to learn clarity, brevity, and the art of positioning the critical matters first such that readers can stop at any point and take away the most important ideas. See the show notes for a link to his thoughts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e0U-MKV90w In Business Brevity is the core of user experience design. Designers obsess over every line and punctuation mark so users get what they want—fast. When was the last time Amazon made you suffer through a tedious experience? Twitter is what’s happening in 140 characters. Instagram is 1,000 words in an instant. For a great example, see the show notes for a link to Ian Spalter’s episode on Abstract: The Art of Design. https://www.netflix.com/title/80057883 In Entrepreneurship When pitching Venture Capitalists—or anyone really—it’s crucial to get to the point. Explain the market opportunity, the product, the distribution strategy, and the team. Then be ready for a game of 20 questions. Elad Gil mentioned that his favorite pitch meeting was scheduled for 45 minutes but lasted for 10. The founder explained himself, fielded key questions, thanked Elad for the meeting, left, and responded with the answer a few days later. Brief, rapid-iteration testing is a hallmark of both The Lean Startup and Traction. In Combat Brevity is critical in combat. Time is the critical resource. Manage it well. Sun Tzu says that no effective campaign can be drawn out. Long, draining campaigns are the enemy of good strategy. In his latest book, The Dragons and the Snakes and in Episode 023, David Kilcullen discusses how Russia uses ultra-quick, ultra-targeted campaigns masterfully. The US did the same thing during the Gulf War. Interestingly, Charlie Munger also praises extreme decisiveness in the face of fleeting opportunity. In Grappling Mike Malinconico boils years of training into 90 seconds of dense technique in his Behind the Dirt series and in FloWrestling’s technique library. High-level jiu jitsu players talk about following the tightest path between two points. In the striking arts, the jab and the teep are essential building blocks—and they highlight the connection between small time investments and limited risk. In Athletics Master coaches work on jarringly brief cues to instantly communicate technical corrections. My Resolution It’s not the New Year, but I resolve to chase brevity. So for the question of the week: where can we trim the fat in our communication? "What I generally say is I make films about culture. That's kind of my default. And by culture, it's not only film and art and music, but it's food and clothing and language and media and the culture of politics. And I'm much more interested in culture, which I define as how we define ourselves and how we define other people. That's what makes up culture, and those are the kinds of questions I always find incredibly interesting and compelling and, in a way, kind of the great underappreciated force for empathy and understanding, which is what our jobs are as documentarians is to foster empathy and understanding."Morgan Neville is an Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. For over twenty years he has been making films about music and cultural subjects including Troubadours, Search and Destroy and three Grammy-nominated films: Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, Muddy Waters Can't Be Satisfied, and Johnny Cash's America. His non-music films include The Cool School, Steinbeck and Shotgun Freeway: Drives Thru Lost L.A.. Neville has also produced many documentaries, including Pearl Jam Twenty, Crossfire Hurricane and Beauty is Embarrassing. This chat was inspired by The Mission's 'The Founders Of The World’s Five Largest Companies All Follow The 5-Hour Rule' - https://medium.com/the-mission/the-founders-of-the-worlds-five-largest-companies-all-follow-the-5-hour-rule-and-they-re-9ca82e93f3fc Quotes we like: - "First, the definitions. I define a voracious learner as someone who follows the 5-hour rule — dedicating at least five hours per week to deliberate learning. I define a polymath as someone who becomes competent in at least three diverse domains and integrates them into a skill set that puts them in the top 1% of their field. " - "When you become a voracious learner, you compound the value of everything you’ve learned in the past. When you become a polymath, you develop the ability to combine skills, and you develop a unique skill set, which helps you develop a competitive advantage." - “ When you become a voracious learner, you compound the value of everything you’ve learned in the past. When you become a polymath, you develop the ability to combine skills, and you develop a unique skill set, which helps you develop a competitive advantage” - “At the highest levels, learning isn’t something you do to prepare for your work. Learning is the most important work. It is the core competency to build. It’s the thing you never delegate. And it’s one of the ultimate drivers of long-term performance and success.” In the ensuring discussion we also touched on: - Amazon: CEO Jeff Bezos' 2018 shareholder letter - https://www.cnbc.com/2018/04/18/amazon-ceo-jeff-bezos-2018-shareholder-letter.html - Dreyfus model of skill acquisition - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreyfus_model_of_skill_acquisition - Abstract: The Art of Design | Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/80057883 - Narro: text to audio - https://www.narro.co/ - Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3228917-outliers - Forget The 10,000-Hour Rule; Edison, Bezos, & Zuckerberg Follow The 10,000-Experiment Rule - https://medium.com/@michaeldsimmons/forget-about-the-10-000-hour-rule-7b7a39343523 - Ray dalio "We tolerate mistakes.

So it's been a little while since I last wrote one of these things. And it'll probably be another month until write the next one, so enjoy it. The films we will be talking about on this episode are guardians of the galaxy possibly the second one but Hallum didn't specify. Mikey says he is reviewing "Being There" but he may have just been saying that he will be there but got his spellings confused. Toby is talking about some documentary about shoes called Abstract: The Art of Design – Tinker Hatfield (we'll try and make it somewhat entertaining don’t worry) and Joe is getting noir by talking about Mad Max Fury Road black and chrome edition.
