Welcome to this ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vaults.Today, we pay tribute to filmmaker Brian Lindstrom, who sadly passed away recently, with this incredible discussion about the film he co-directed, LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL, with his co-director Andy Brown & Aquarium Drunkard's Jason P. Woodbury. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing or working with Brian will tell you he was one of the kindest, wisest, and big-hearted people ever, and his filmmaking absolutely reflected that. If you haven't seen his films Lost Angel, Mothering Inside, or Alien Boy yet, please take the time to spend with these incredibly powerful films. He will be missed.(Episode 39 originally aired on June 6th, 2024).This week, I'm joined by JASON P. WOODBURY (of Aquarium Drunkard) and filmmakers BRIAN LINDSTROM & ANDY BROWN to discuss their incredible new film LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILL. We talked about Judee Sill's gnostic relationship to her music and how she backed it up in her lifestyle, what our introductions to her music were like, Sill's disdain of being lumped in with Christian Rock & opening for rock bands, her influence on Andy Partridge of XTC, how the filmmakers shaped the film over the past ten years, Tooth & Nail Records, the mythologizing of a subject's life in documentary filmmaking, Asylum Records and her ups and downs with David Geffen, Some Kind Of Monster, Sill's vulnerability and ego in her diary writings and drawings, how they chose to animate Sill's artwork and found her voice, Sill's influence on a new generation of musicians, her iconic Old Grey Whistle Test performance of “The Kiss,” how the film addresses childhood trauma, addiction, and resilience, what parts of Sill's life didn't fit into the film, and the power of Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Guided By Voices & SST Records. So join us as we talk about one of the greatest songwriters to ever be part of the cosmos, Judee Sill, on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.WATCH LOST ANGEL: THE GENIUS OF JUDEE SILLhttps://greenwichentertainment.com/film/JASON P. For this week's episode, I convinced my guest, comedian/actor Eugene Mirman (Bob's Burgers, Flight Of The Conchords, Delocated), to let me record my 500th episode 7 years in advance in order to capitalize on his star power. We discuss the magic of comedy albums & comedy concert films; recording visual comedy for an album, Eugene's 7 LP Sub Pop masterwork I'm Sorry (You're Welcome), which includes 45 minutes of him crying and 159 orgasms, Eugene's scrapped "jokes for animals", his new LP & video special Here Comes The Whimsy, Eugene pushing the boundaries of a physical audio release by having it also available as a chair or a sack of flour that you have to carry around like a baby, how Eugene records his parts for the Bob's Burgers' songs. PLUS Eugene surprises me with a music film (5 minutes before recording) to discuss: "What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat & Tears," which is about the band being blackmailed into performing behind the Iron Curtain by the U.S. government. So let's join Eugene in sending fifty tap shoes to a restaurant of his choice on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!EUGENE MIRMAN: www.eugenemirman.comprettygoodfriends.comHERE COMES THE WHIMSY: EUGENE'S NEW FULL STAND-UP SPECIAL:www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHPEaN1DxKwREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. My guest this week is NYC-based musician, author, and performance artist Joseph Keckler (NPR's Tiny Desk, tours with Lydia Lunch & Sleater-Kinney), who chose the 1929 two-reeler short St. Louis Blues, which is the legend Bessie Smith's first and only film appearance. We discuss Joseph's iconic performance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert Series, how he came to unleash his powerful vocal range on a wide range of audiences, choosing to write and sing in German about the adult moments where he was relapsing into a teenage Goth, befriending and touring with Lydia Lunch, Bebe Hansen, the current No-Wave scene in NYC, the excitement of having a standoff with an audience, opening for Sleater-Kinney, confusing but life-altering concert billings, where we both were when first hearing Bessie Smith and the imprint it left on us, why this 1929 short film of Bessie Smith was almost destroyed in the 50s, tape trading with The Residents, hearing Aretha Franklin's voice coming up through the floorboards and being obsessed with Cab Calloway & Bessie Smith as a child, Bessie's acting chops and the unique direction of this performance & more.So let's sing at the top of our lungs into the bottom of our beer mug on this week's Revolutions Per Movie.Joseph will be performing on May 31st 2026 in NYC at TV EYE w/ Genre Is DeathTickets available at tveyenyc.com/calendarJOSEPH KECKLER:josephkeckler.com/BESSIE SMITH in ST. Welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! Today, as we frustratingly say goodbye (for now) to Stephen Colbert on Late Night, I bring you the sweetest and most honest discussion from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert writer & performer, the legendary Brian Stack. Not only did we discuss his love and passion for Townes Van Zandt (whose documentary he chose to discuss), but he was also really open about his time at Late Night With Conan O'Brien and his transition to working on Colbert's show, offering a fascinating glimpse into the world of late-night.Hope to see you again soon, Dr. Frankenstein's Monster!(Episode 104 originally aired on July 17th, 2025).This week, I am joined by one of the greatest late-night writers & performers of all time, BRIAN STACK (Late Night With Conan O'Brien, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), who picked a beloved music documentary to discuss: Be Here To Love Me - A Film About Townes Van Zandt. We discuss the differences between working on Conan and Stephen's shows, the last-minute panic of doing a late night show, my experience performing on Conan, accidental mistakes turning into magic, how many of Brian's characters are tragically musical, band banter, the melancholy edge of the best comedy, how musicians who write the best sad songs are often the funniest people, the creation of the band Slipnutz, how Townes' music came into both our lives later in life, songs that tear you heart out, being a musician's musician, The Stooges, Aimee Mann, Dave Alvin, The Chelsea Hotel being the headquarters of Zandt's record label, how Townes is his own storyteller in this documentary, self-destructive tendencies in comedy and music, Dylan and Townes relationship, our Chris Elliott obsessions, being under-heard and misunderstood, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth trying to help Townes make a record, the documentary Heartworn Highways, Neko Case, Mick Jagger's country accent, writing songs in your dreams and so much more.So let's laugh through the pain on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.BRIAN STACK:https://teamcoco.com/celebs/brian-stackREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. This week, I'm joined by John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants to look at their incredible body of music video work (481 videos and counting on their YouTube page!), and get treated to so many incredible mind-bending stories directly from the source! We discuss TMBG's track and video they made for my Hedwig covers charity album, the fascination with death and aging in their lyrics, the moment when both Johns first realized they were connecting with an audience of strangers, borrowing expensive drum machines when they started, foolish life decisions, the East Village scene of the 80s, playing on the same bills as Butthole Surfers & Steve Buscemi, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, long-distance collaborations, the multitudes of songs written for their Dial-A-Song answering machine service, the John Updike world the band came from, having architectural dads, the pros of being ultra-prolific, the different ways they would record their songs, microtones, the children's records era for TMBG, working with their first director Adam Bernstein, TMBG being accepted by early MTV, using left-over film from Jonathan Demme movies and windup 16mm cameras for their early videos, where they got the 6ft. head props used in their stage shows, John getting music video fatigue, the parameters the band set early in their career (no solos, not a lot of intros, no fadeouts), Spike Jonze, the epic tale of TMBG playing on The Tonight Show with Doc Severson, & more.THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS:theymightbegiants.comhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTZ0pVJExw6z0XjqEzchX8gREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE: Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. Welcome to our bi-monthly ENCORE PRESENTATION of classic REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE episodes from the vault! This was a favorite of mine from a few years back, with punk legend, KT Kincaid of NEO BOYS, who came on the show to discuss our heroes, THE SLITS, and the amazing doc about their genius, HERE TO BE HEARD. Plus, I love getting to spend time with someone who helped bring an embryonic music scene to life, even as they had to push against the difficulties posed by local music club bans, volatile press, and a general public that feared any type of punk existence on the planet.(Episode 40 originally aired on June 4th, 2024). ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:This week, we talked to musician and vital member of the late 70s/early 80s Portland Punk Scene, KT Kincaid, who picked the incredible doc, THE SLITS HERE TO BE HEARD. We discussed her and her sister's importance in the creation of the punk scene, their band NEO BOYS (whose recordings were reissued on K Records), discovering Bowie, seeing punkers before hearing punk, the rarity of finding punk records, picking the bass guitar over other instruments, nobody sounding like The Slits & the genius of Viv Albertine's guitar playing, being in a band with your sister, getting 50 people to come to a show, the video for ‘Earthbeat', The Flowers Of Romance, the punk collective mindset & loyalties in the punk scene, opening for Television, practicing non-stop in your first band & taking it so seriously, pooling money to buy records, the violence towards the early punk scene, the gang mentality of being in a band, the magic of chance meetings, getting pissed at the Guardian's review of this documentary, and Chris reads the minutes from one of the Portland punk collective's meetings from the late 70s.Nothing typical here as we dive into this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!NEO BOYS:https://neoboys.bandcamp.com/album/sooner-or-later-vol-1-klp242THE SLITS ‘Earthbeat' videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqiFYcKEhxsREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film, or music videos to discuss. Ramesses II defends his borders. In the early years of his reign, Ramesses focussed on home defence. His army established new forts at remote locations along the western Delta and Mediterranean Coast (Marmarica). Traces of this work can be found at famous locations like el-Alamein, Mersa Matruh, and Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham, the latter of which has been the object of detailed excavation in recent decades. Apparently, Ramesses was fortifying his frontiers, guarding the western approaches to Egypt. Soon after, the pharaoh went forth on campaign. His target? The cities of Canaan and Amurru, in modern-day Lebanon. Along the way, he left inscriptions at Nahr el-Kalb, which started a surprisingly long-lived tradition... Today I'm tackling the show's very first concert film, and I'll post a link for where you can watch the whole thing for free on YouTube down below. It's URGH! A MUSIC WAR, and I'm joined by the always hilarious Blaine Capatch (@blainecapatch on Twitter and BlueSky) to talk about it. This is also the first movie I was completely unfamiliar with before Blaine asked to do it, and I'm glad he did. You get to see/hear The Police, Devo, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Go-Gos, Joan Jett, XTC, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark and a whole list of post-punk and new wave bands before they were famous. And being a concert film, the film discussion is light, so expect a lot of music discussion in this episode. And please check out the movie, it's free and it's a really fun watch! Everybody loves Julia Ducournau's Titane (2022)! From wiki: “Titane (French: [titan] (listen), lit. "Titanium") is a 2021 French body horror psychological drama film[5][6] written and directed by Julia Ducournau. The French-Belgian co-production stars Agathe Rousselle in her feature film debut as Alexia, a woman who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Vincent Lindon, Garance Marillier and Laïs Salameh also star.” Josh and Dru are plagued by bad vibes. They discuss Kenneth Anger (RIP) and the WGA strike. Josh is reading Bret Easton Ellis's The Shards, Drusilla loved Greener Grass, which has to be imported. Same with Dinner in America. Also discussed: Urghh! A Music War!, Funny Pages, I Think You Should Leave, Patty Harrison, An American Werewolf in London, Hell Night, Tangerine, Crash, transmasculine politics, Cabin in the Woods, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In this episode of TishTalk, I speak with Author Donald Lee, (www.cominghomespirit.com) who is on tour to promote his newest book, "What the Hell is going on" and his spiritual message. Donald and discuss the actual war in Ukraine with Russia and move on to topics on the 5th generation war on humanity raging throughout the world. We cover the suspicious fires all over Canada, the weaponization of everything and the use of mass censorship to enforce the facade of democracy and choice. We explore the Marxist philosophy that is embedded in socialism as a stepping stone to communism and go over how we face this great threat and overcome it peacefully. We end off with a discussion on how music can raise our frequency and mood and the importance of being trapped by their weapon of fear porn.
What does it mean to be a scholar when the culture you study is under attack? Maria Sonevytsky and Oksana Nesterenko work on Ukrainian music, and their lives have changed profoundly in the last year. A conversation about the Ukrainian avant-garde and pop worlds, how wartime changes research agendas, and much more.Maria Sonevytsky is Associate Professor of Anthropology & Music at Bard College; Oksana Nesterenko teaches at Union College.Show notes and more over at soundexpertise.org!A new call to action: tell us why you listen to the show! At one point in the not-too-distant past, live was the only way to experience music, and it remains the most primal, mysterious, and compelling ways to experience music. With the advent of streaming -- millions of recorded songs available at the click of a mouse -- live music retains the mystique of music. It's raw, human, and risky. Things could blow up at any moment. And sometimes they do. But when they don't, or even when they do, it's a special moment. Or at least a memorable one! Aaron and Trent invite their first guest onto the show, drummer Kevin Nelson. Kevin shares his live music experience playing in childhood bands, returning to music as an adult with Aaron's own band Standard Transmission, and the Fort Worth Music and Social Club. This episode finds us discussing a controversial song by The Police, so much so that they actually recorded two different versions of it, the original in 1980 which creeped everybody out, and the 1986 version which not only broke up the band (essentially), but also incorporated our favorite instrument, the Fairlight. We also discuss one of the most famous 80's movies of them all, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. We spend a good amount of time on the soundtrack, and on Ferris's synthesizer, which was an E-mu Emulator II (like Trevor Rabin of Yes used to have) and NOT a Fairlight. It's our first two-fer episode. Today we discuss "Urgh! A Music War", a film that showcases 30+ new wave/postpunk era acts in concert, directed by Derek Burbidge and released in 1981. This is a cult favorite with loads of great stuff, and unlike any other films that we've discussed on the show. We get into some of the featured artists, including The Police, XTC, The Go-Gos, John Cooper Clarke, Gary Numan, Klaus Nomi, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, and many more. Plus: "Gaga: Five Foot Two", an authorized Lady Gaga documentary, directed by Chris Moukarbel, released on Netflix in 2017. This movie shows Gaga as the puts together the "Joanne" album and preps for her Super Bowl Halftime Show. Plus Plus: we're joined by Very Special Guest Annie Zaleski, who tells us about her upcoming book on Lady Gaga and discusses both films, along with Duran Duran and loads of other fun stuff. Today's documentary is Pearl Jam Twenty. The documentary was directed by Cameron Crowe (director of Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, Say Anything, and, relevant to today's episode, Singles) and released in 2011. For this episode we are joined by Very Special Guest Steven Hyden, author of the fantastic recent book "Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack of a Generation". Steven is the author of several other excellent books about music, he writes a regular music column at Uproxx, and he is the co-host of Indiecast. How does it do it all? Who knows, but we're happy that he took the time to join us to discuss Pearl Jam, this documentary, and his fantastic new book. The 1980s were headed into frightening times politically. The threat of war and potential nuclear conflict was pervasive. So naturally music would reflect the times, right? Sure thing....Bette Davis Eyes, Nine To Five (Morning Train), This Ole' House, You Weren't In Love With Me, and Just The Two Of Us were what people were buying – they reflect the times, right? Welcome to episode 96 of See Hear Podcast. Okay, okay.....I loaded up some songs that were the antithesis of the films under question, but just wanted to make a point that what was popular in the mainstream was still a long way from the more edgy music that rock fans were taking joy and catharsis in. While a lot of the new wave of music wasn't necessarily focusing on the fears of the world, its often jittery nature and aggressive sounds surely reflected the state of the world (that's my theory and I'm sticking with it). Tim and Bernie look at a pair of films released in 1981. For the main part, they discuss Urgh! A Music War, a concert film showing the diversity of the “new wave” / post punk bands of the era. How else are you going to find a connection between Klaus Nomi, XTC, Gary Numan and The Cramps? It's a great time capsule of the era showing that musicians didn't choose (at least at first) to play it safe, but still found varying levels of success. They also look at a film more musically focused called Dance Craze – a concert film featuring a range of bands from the British ska revival of the late 70s / early 80s. While any of these bands could have easily fit into Urgh! A Music War, it's great that Dance Craze exists as a companion piece. Later in the show, I speak with director and friend of the show, Skizz Cyzyk about a documentary he's been working off and on for many years called Urgh! Revisited. Acknowledging that there's not much information out there about U!AMW, Skizz has interviewed a range of musicians from the original film about their recollections of the era, and how the film got made. Hopefully, he gets to finish it and put some perspective on a cherished film without much documented history. Our huge thanks to Skizz for joining us. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.Songs this week include:The Living End – “Stay Away From Me” from It's For Your Own Good (1995)The Tomb Tones – “My Girlfriend's A Zombie” from Pumpkin Guts (2020) Tiger Army – “What Happens?” from III. Ghost Tigers Rise (2004)Nekromantix – “I'm A Hellcat” from Return Of The Loving Dead (2002)Mourning Noise – “Monster Madness” from Mourning Noise (2021)HorrorPops – “Misstake” from Hell Yeah (2004)The Independents – “Death Notice” from Back From The Grave (2002)The Cramps – “Gabageman” from Bad Music For Bad People (1980)Check out the great documentary “Urgh! Urgh! A Music War is a 1982 concert film featuring performances by some of the biggest and most influential bands of the era, including The Police, The Go Gos, Oingo Boingo, Joan Jett, and Gary Numan. It also nearly got me banned for life from YouTube. Nextlander's Alex Navarro joins me to talk about both of these things!
I’m Danny Lane, the curator of The Music Museum. This exhibit is called Vietnam War: The Music. Our mission here at the Music Museum is to support all Vietnam Veterans and those who serve the United States, then and now. We thank you for your service. Early-on, in Vietnam, soldiers turned to music as a lifeline to the home front they promised to defend. Rock & roll (R&R) really became rest & relaxation (R&R) for the troops. It was this music that got you through another day, another day closer to going home. Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. A place, a brother, a time gone by. This program is for you, the Vietnam Vets, who will never forget. Our goal with Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. For your service and your sacrifice, this is Vietnam War: The Music.
