The Los Angeles Chargers have made a significant move in securing Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach, marking a momentous return for the former Chargers quarterback of the 1999 and 2000 seasons. Harbaugh, who spent the last nine years at the helm of the University of Michigan's football program, brings a wealth of experience and success to the Chargers organization. Harbaugh's recent accomplishments at Michigan are nothing short of remarkable. Leading the Wolverines to three consecutive Big Ten Championships, three College Football Playoff appearances, and culminating in a perfect 15-0 record and the 2023 National Championship, he has truly left an indelible mark on the college football landscape. Owner and Chairman of the Board, Dean Spanos, expressed his excitement about Harbaugh's return, highlighting his deep football roots as the son of a coach, brother of a coach, and father of a coach. With a coaching career influenced by names like Schembechler and Ditka, Harbaugh has consistently led teams to success, and now he returns to the Chargers as their head coach. President of Football Operations, John Spanos, emphasized the collaborative nature of building successful teams and credited Harbaugh as a master team-builder. Former players speak highly of him, and opponents recognize his impact, making him a unique and invaluable addition to the Chargers organization. Harbaugh's coaching track record is impressive, boasting a 144-52 record as a collegiate head coach and a 49-22-1 record as an NFL head coach. Notably, he led the San Francisco 49ers to three-straight NFC Championship Games, including an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! This Episode features one of the most successful coaches in UK ice hockey history — Dave Whistle. Over a 16-season UK career, Dave spent seven seasons as a player and nine as a head coach, leading both the Bracknell Bees and the Belfast Giants to SuperLeague League Championships, and guiding the Giants to a Playoff Championship as well. A graduate of the University of Brandon in Manitoba, Dave arrived in the UK in 1991 to join the Billingham Bombers. Despite finishing as the team's top scorer with 48 goals and 62 assists in just 36 games, he was surprisingly released and went on to ice for Romford, Basingstoke and Telford, gaining valuable experience across both Division 1 and the Premier Division. Dave's career took a defining turn when he joined the Bracknell Bees. Following the creation of the Ice Hockey SuperLeague, he stepped into coaching and, in 1998–99, became head coach. Just one season later, Dave led the Bees to a remarkable SuperLeague League Championship, finishing above the sport's wealthiest clubs. In 2000, Dave accepted the challenge of becoming the first-ever head coach of the Belfast Giants — a brand new franchise with no arena, no roster and no fanbase. Against all odds, he built a competitive team and a passionate following, with the Giants selling out their first home game. The following season Belfast captured their first SuperLeague title after a 16-game unbeaten run, and in 2003 Dave added a SuperLeague Playoff Championship to his growing list of honours. Following the collapse of the SuperLeague, Dave coached in Germany and later returned to the UK with Cardiff Devils and Sheffield Steelers before heading back to Canada. Now coaching with the Okanagan Hockey Academy, Dave remains one of the most influential figures in the modern history of UK ice hockey.

Former Durham Wasps, Basingstoke Beavers, Nottingham Panthers and Telford Tigers forward Mario Belanger joins the show to reflect on a UK career filled with goals, controversy and unforgettable moments. Arriving in the UK in February 1987 as a replacement import for Durham Wasps, Mario quickly became a fan favourite. He starred in the 1987 Wembley Playoff Finals, scoring a hat trick in the semi-final against Fife Flyers before lifting the Championship with a win over Murrayfield Racers. Despite success, Mario returned to Canada early the following season, triggering a five-year ban from British hockey. After its expiry, he returned with Basingstoke Beavers, reuniting with Kevin Conway and helping the club win Heineken Division One, the Playoff Championship and promotion to the Premier Division. Tempted back from retirement in 1994 by Nottingham Panthers, Mario enjoyed a strong season despite the club again falling short of the title. His final UK spell with the Telford Tigers proved short-lived amid instability, before he retired for good. Now a police officer, Mario looks back fondly on his UK years—especially that magical Wembley triumph with Durham.

In today's show I speak with former Aviemore Blackhawks, Cardiff Devils, Ayr Raiders and Swindon Wildcats coach Brian Kanewischer. Brian talks about travelling over 4,000 miles from his home in Medicine Hat, Alberta to attend the 100 Years of UK Ice Hockey celebrations in Durham in August 2015 — an event he describes as the perfect chance to reunite with old friends and teammates from his UK hockey days. Brian's UK adventure began in 1984 when, aged just 24, he left Canada for Scotland via Holland and Belgium to join the Aviemore Blackhawks. Arriving initially as a player, he quickly became player-coach and led the Blackhawks to the 1986–87 British League Division 2 title and Playoff Championship, famously defeating the Cardiff Devils in Cardiff. That success led to an approach from Cardiff Devils owner John Lawless, who brought Brian onto the bench alongside former Blackhawks Brian Wilkie and the late Brian Dickson. The move paid off immediately as the Devils won the Autumn Cup, defeating the Trafford Metros 11–10 on aggregate. What followed was a remarkable period of success. With the signings of Ian and Stephen Cooper and Canadian import Steve Moria, Cardiff surged forward — winning promotion as First Division champions in 1988–89, then completing an unforgettable double in 1989–90 by claiming the Premier Division title and the Wembley Playoff Championship. The dramatic final against the Murrayfield Racers, won on penalties after trailing 3–0, is often described as the greatest Wembley final ever. Brian was also named Coach of the Year. Brian later returned to Scotland to coach the Ayr Raiders, before spells with the Fife Flyers, Oxford and Swindon Wildcats. In 1994, after ten memorable and successful years in UK hockey, Brian and his wife returned home to Alberta.

Simon went on to represent Great Britain at every level from U16 to senior. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, Simon was part of a fearsome Whitley Warriors side renowned for toughness, deep British talent and intense rivalries — especially with the Durham Wasps. He reflects on the unique culture of the team, the infamous Hillheads Ice Rink, and the influence of imports including Hilton Ruggles, Luc Chabot, Mike Rowe and future NHL coach Mike Babcock. After brief spells away, Simon returned to the North East, later joining the Newcastle Vipers, where he was part of the club's transition into the Elite League and their stunning 2006 Playoff Championship run. His career also included time with Paisley Pirates, Kingston Hawks and a short stint in Australia with the Adelaide Avalanche. Simon later enjoyed two successful spells as Head Coach of the Whitley Warriors and, after recently stepping down, remains deeply involved in the game as an assistant coach with the Great Britain U18 programme.

In this episode, I speak with John Lawless, former player and coach with the Peterborough Pirates, Cardiff Devils, Manchester Storm and Telford Tigers. John explains his decision to join the Pirates over Nottingham Panthers and reflects on Peterborough's success and colourful characters. In 1986, he became player-coach of the newly formed Cardiff Devils, guiding the club through a remarkable rise — from early challenges at the Wales National Ice Rink to rapid promotion and a stunning League and Playoff Championship double in the Heineken Premier Division. One of John's proudest achievements was leading Cardiff to the European Championship semi-finals in 1993, the first British team ever to reach that stage. After nine seasons in Wales, John moved to become player-coach of the Manchester Storm, backed by Ogden Entertainments at the Nynex Arena. The Storm enjoyed instant success, winning the league and promotion in their inaugural season, before the arrival of the SuperLeague brought new challenges. The episode concludes with reflections on John's time at Telford Tigers and memories of the Cardiff Devils' 25th anniversary celebrations.

Born in Fife, Les Millie — known as "Laser" — began skating at five and came through the Kirkcaldy juniors before making his Fife Flyers senior debut at just 14. After four seasons with a talented Flyers side, limited opportunities for British players prompted a move south. A curfew-related suspension under Brian Kanewischer opened the door to Sheffield, and at 19 Les joined the Sheffield Steelers with support from Ronnie Wood and former teammate Neil Abel. He quickly became a fan favourite, forming a lethal line with Tim Cranston and Tommy Plommer. Across three hugely successful seasons, Les enjoyed two promotions, a League Championship and a Playoff Championship. A career highlight came in the 1994–95 Wembley Playoff semi-final, scoring a hat-trick (including a penalty shot) against the Cardiff Devils. After roster changes limited his ice time, Les returned to the Fife Flyers, scoring 23 goals in 28 games, before a prolific spell with the Solihull Blaze (90 goals in 74 games). Now retired, Les lives in Sheffield, working as a branch manager in the vehicle components industry.
