In our last edition before the World Cup break, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes are joined by the distinguished author and journalist Duncan Hamilton. Duncan has written almost twenty books on various aspects of football and cricket including three William Sports Book of the Year winners. Among those twenty are biographies of George Best, Harold Larwood and Neville Cardus, a fascinating portrait of Brian Clough called Provided You Don't Kiss Me and his latest Answered Prayers about Alf Ramsey and the winning of the World Cup. You would think that there was nothing left to say about 1966 but by concentrating on the rather tortured character of Alf Ramsey, Duncan makes us relive that whole experience with fresh insight. In particular Duncan promotes the importance in Alf's life of the Spurs manager Arthur Rowe, the now almost forgotten manager of the Tottenham Hotspur side that won the League Championship in the 1950-51 season. His tactics came to be called “push and run” and in Alf Ramsey, Rowe found a willing student. To discover all sorts of fascinating details about Alf and the 1966 World Cup triumph download the latest podcast. And just to re-iterate: Colin, Jon and their indefatigable producer, Paul, are arriving at the World Cup like all the players – utterly knackered. In order to recharge the batteries, they will have a close season where they will not be found drunk and disorderly in a nightclub in Ibiza. Instead, they will be back bright eyed and bushy-tailed for the new season towards the end of August. If you really can't wait till then and you want to see them all in operation you will be able to find them at the Nevill Holt Festival in the glorious Leicestershire countryside near Market Harborough at 4.45pm on Saturday 13 June. fWotD Episode 3303: 2006 Football League Championship play-off final Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 21 May 2026, is 2006 Football League Championship play-off final. The 2006 Football League Championship play-off final was an association football match which was played on 21 May 2006 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, between Leeds United and Watford. The match was to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from the Football League Championship, the second tier of English football, to the FA Premiership. Reading and Sheffield United, the top two teams of the 2005–06 Football League Championship season, gained automatic promotion to the Premiership, while the clubs placed from third to sixth place in the table took part in play-off semi-finals. Third-placed Watford defeated sixth-placed Crystal Palace in the first semi-final, while fifth-placed Leeds United beat fourth-placed Preston North End. The winners of these semi-finals competed for the final place for the 2006–07 season in the Premiership. Winning the final was estimated to be worth up to £40 million to the successful team. The final was refereed by Mike Dean and was watched by a crowd of 64,736. It was the last play-off final to be held at the Millennium Stadium, as the new Wembley Stadium was completed in time for the 2007 final. Watford won the match 3–0, with opening goalscorer Jay DeMerit named man of the match. Leeds goalkeeper Neil Sullivan scored an own goal to make the score 2–0 to Watford after 60 minutes, and the final goal was a penalty kick scored by Darius Henderson. The following season, Leeds's manager Kevin Blackwell was sacked in September, with the club second from bottom, and was replaced by Dennis Wise. The club went into administration the following May and were deducted ten points; they finished the season bottom of the league and they were relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in the club's history. Watford struggled in the Premiership and were relegated back to the Championship after ending the season bottom of the league, ten points below safety. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:58 UTC on Thursday, 21 May 2026.For the full current version of the article, see 2006 Football League Championship play-off final on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Ayanda.
In this podcast episode Jim White, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes turn their attention to one of the darkest decades in recent football history - the 1980s. It wasn't all bad. We got to the quarter finals of the World Cup in 1986 and were unlucky to lose to a goal punched past Shilton by the Hand of God. We had a fascinating rivalry at the top of the game between the two sides based in Liverpool one of whom was not Tranmere Rovers. Three different English sides won the European Cup between 1980 and when we were banned from Europe after Heysel. However, if you look at the crowds during the decade there was a steep decline. The hooliganism was bad and getting worse, the government hated the game and everything to do with it and television was accordingly losing interest. The decade was the last chapter of the game as it had traditionally been played in this country and it culminated in one of the great finishes to the League Championship as Arsenal won at Anfield. Tragically too, it was the decade of Bradford fire and the Hillsborough disaster when 96 innocent people died needlessly. What are your feelings about football in the Eighties? This week Jim White, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes wonder if the gap will ever narrow between the Championship and the Premier League. In 1964 Leeds United were promoted from the Second Division and in their first season in Division 1 they lost the League Championship to Manchester United only on goal average (as it then was). In the 1976-77 season Nottingham Forest finished third in the Second Division – well behind Chelsea and champions Wolverhampton Wanderers. The next season they won the First Division, the year after that they won the European Cup and then retained it the following year. Clearly that is never going to happen these days. More relevant is that last season all three clubs who had been promoted the previous year went straight back down again. This year at least one will go down and possibly two of the relegated sides in 2025 will come back up again. Will any club in the future be able to replicate what Forest did? Dave Watson, Everton's most-recent trophy-winning captain, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. The centre-half was the Blues' skipper when they defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side 1-0 in the 1995 FA Cup final and recalls an incredible story about what happened to the famous silverware that night after the Wembley victory. Scouser Watson, who grew up on Boundary Street, close to the new Everton Stadium, started his professional career across Stanley Park with Liverpool – for whom his brother Alex later played – but never made a first team appearance before joining Norwich City in 1980. While with the Canaries, he made his England debut, winning his first of 12 caps for the Three Lions, in a 2-0 win over Brazil in the Maracana Stadium before lifting the League Cup the following year. He returned to his home city in 1986 when Howard Kendall snapped him up for Everton for a then club record £900,000 fee and was part of their last League Championship-winning side in his first season at Goodison Park. Now 63, Watson made 528 appearances for the Blues – the third highest in history behind Neville Southall (751) and Brian Labone (534) – and also had a stint as caretaker manager in 1997 following Joe Royle's exit before having a season in charge of Tranmere Rovers in 2001/02 to serve all three of Merseyside's professional football clubs. Trevor Steven, the player who scored the goal that produced arguably the loudest roar in the Grand Old Lady's history, is Chris Beesley's latest guest on Goodison Park: My Home. Steven netted the goal that clinched Everton's place in the 1985 European Cup-Winners' Cup final when he sealed the 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in what is widely regarded as Goodison Park's greatest-ever night. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Steven recalls his early football memories, growing up close to England's border with Scotland, before getting his big break in the professional ranks at Burnley, where he played alongside a previous Goodison Park: My Home guest Martin Dobson. Having been snapped up by fellow North Easterner Howard Kendall for £300,000 in 1983, Steven's first season on Merseyside finished with him delivering the cross for Andy Gray's goal to clinch the 2-0 victory over Watford in the FA Cup final. The following season, the midfielder was part of Everton's most-successful side with a memorable goal at Tottenham Hotspur in the title run-in as well as scoring both in the semi-final second leg and final in Europe. Steven then went on to become top scorer in a second Blues' League Championship-winning side in 1987 before departing Goodison after the 1989 FA Cup final. Now 61, Steven, who in 1991 commanded the joint-highest fee for a British player at the time when he moved from Rangers to Marseille for £5.5million, also delivers an important message about how through his work with charity Mindflow, he is trying to use football to help improve mental health in the construction industry. Described by Everton's most-successful manager Howard Kendall as the Blues' most-important signing since the Second World War, Peter Reid joins Chris Beesley for the latest episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Reid first played at ‘The Grand Old Lady' when he was just 14 years old for Huyton schoolboys but back then he was a Liverpool fan. The midfielder underwent an emphatic conversion though following his transfer from Bolton Wanderers to Everton in 1982 and having helped the Blues lift the FA Cup in 1984, he was voted PFA Players' Player of the Year by his fellow professionals in 1984/85 as the club enjoyed their best-ever season, winning the League Championship with five games to spare plus the European Cup-Winners' Cup. After suffering the heartbreak of finishing runners-up to Liverpool in both the League and FA Cup the following year – refusing to take part in the joint open top bus parade after the Wembley final between the two local rivals – Reid and his team-mates would bounce back from injury and adversity to secure another title in 1986/87 before Kendall departed. Reid recalls Everton's glory days plus banter with team-mates and fans with his typical sense of humour in what is a fun-filled chat, although he almost spills coffee all over the studio when Chris asks him about an amusing incident in an FA Cup semi-final. Also, ahead of Mothers' Day, there is poignancy as the 68-year-old recalls the emotional scenes when his lifelong Evertonian mum was captured on camera, celebrating the 1985 League Championship success at Goodison Park. Joe Royle – the only living person to achieve legendary status at Everton as both a player and manager (the other being the late, great Howard Kendall) – invites Chris Beesley to his house for a special episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Royle, who grew up in Norris Green, attending Ranworth Square Primary School before going on to Quarry Bank High School where he developed into a talented all-round sportsman, also excelling in the high jump and swimming, became Everton's youngest-ever player at the time when he was controversially picked ahead of ‘The Golden Vision' Alex Young by Harry Catterick to make his debut at Blackpool aged 16 years and 282 days on January 15, 1966, a record that stood for over 42 years until it was eclipsed by Jose Baxter. Although Royle was part of the Blues team that lost 1-0 after extra time to West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup final, alongside the ‘Holy Trinity' midfield of Kendall, Colin Harvey and Alan Ball, plus the likes of captain Brian Labone, goalkeeper Gordon West, fellow Scouser Tommy Wright and his good friend John Hurst, he was top scorer in Everton's 1969/70 League Championship-winning side. Once reaching 29 goals in all competitions in 1968/69, by the time Royle's Everton career had finished, he had netted more times for the club (119) than any player since Dixie Dean. Returning to Goodison Park as manager in November 1994 with the team bottom of the Premier League, he saved the Blues from relegation while also becoming the only manager in Everton history to win a trophy in his first season in charge. Some 30 years on, Royle remains the last Everton manager to secure major silverware for the club, while the following campaign (1995/96), he steered them to sixth place, which was their only top-half finish in the first decade of the Premier League. Now 75, he explains how the circumstances behind his departure continue to perplex him but as a True Blue, he was delighted to return to the Goodison hot seat for one last time as caretaker boss alongside his former player David Unsworth against Norwich City in 2016. In our first Goodison Park: My Home interview published in 2025 – the year Everton finally depart the Grand Old Lady – we speak to the Blues' favourite Yorkshireman Ian Snodin. Despite hailing from the other side of the Pennines, ‘Snods' as he is affectionately known by Evertonians, became a True Blue and adored by the Goodison fanbase when snubbed Liverpool's Kenny Dalglish to accept Howard Kendall's offer to join the club in 1987. Ian's decision was vindicated as he was rewarded with a League Championship medal in his first season on Merseyside and his hilarious tale about what happened to him on the way home from that title success clinched at Norwich City is worth watching the interview alone! He also speaks candidly about his upbringing in a mining community, his formative years in the game playing alongside his elder brother Glynn at Doncaster Rovers and the influence that Billy Bremner had on him both there and at Leeds United plus the varied role he now plays as an ambassador for Everton Football Club. A review of what it took to win the championship and all the adversity that was overcome to get there
Baseball Hall of Famer Pat Gillick is one of only 3 General Managers in history to win World Series titles with multiple franchises (Toronto in 92 & 93, Philadelphia in 08). He is also one of only 5 GM's enshrined in the HOF. In all, he led 4 different franchises to League Championship series (Baltimore and Seattle also). Fascinating to hear his stories as he discusses each of those unique situations (from expansion slow-builds to 'win-now' mentalities), and what it took to build winners. On this week's episode, we begin by discussing the Mets winning the Wild Card Round in epic fashion, before recapping a Divisional round that saw the Mets and Yankees beat the Phillies and Royals in four-games, and the Dodgers and Guardians winning interdivisional matchups against the Padres and Tigers. From there, we preview the League Championship matchups between the Mets and Dodgers and Yankees and Guardians, and discuss Terry Francona returning to baseball with the Reds, the Twins potential sale and front-office shake up, Bud Black's extension, the latest in the Diamond Sports saga, and the life and career of Luis Tiant.
SHOW OPEN: Danielle opens her show breaking down the Yankees and Mets matchups in the League Championship series and how we might be heading towards a Subway Series.
Chris Beesley speaks to Anders Limpar, the man described by Everton's last trophy-winning manager Joe Royle as “A football genius” and “the most-talented player I ever worked with,” in the latest episode of Goodison Park: My Home. Despite hailing from Solna, on the edge of Sweden's capital city of Stockholm, Limpar, explains how he was actually a boyhood Blue with his affiliation with Everton going back much longer than his three-year playing stint with the club between 1994-97. The 59-year-old, who had already been a League Championship winner with Arsenal before he came to Merseyside, speaks poignantly about his friendship with the late Kevin Campbell and also recalls the scramble for his signature when his time at Highbury came to an end. Limpar speaks candidly about his part in ‘The Great Escape' against Wimbledon, the change of manager from Mike Walker to Joe Royle, winning the FA Cup against Alex Ferguson's Manchester United and his combination both on and off the field with fellow winger Andrei Kanchelskis who inadvertently helped him to learn Russian. It's another generous portion of True Blue nostalgia with our 10th guest so far as we celebrate the final season of ‘The Grand Old Lady' with one of her greatest mercurial talents. The Nats were pummeled 10-0 on Wednesday night to conclude the sweep at the hands of the Mets. Mark (From Citi Field) & Al convene after Washington finished a paltry 2-11 vs. New York this season and the Mets maintain a two game lead over the Braves from the NL's Wild Card spot. The Nationals remain stuck at 68 wins and need to go 4-6 the rest of the way to exceed last season's win total. (14:00) DJ Herz was cruising through the initial innings, but the wheels came off in the bottom of the 4th. New York scored 9 runs in the frame and 7 of them came at the expense of the lefty. The big inning was a very costly one to Herz as it raised his ERA by over half of a run (4.30). (21:00) Jose Quintana threw 7 scoreless innings for the third time this season against Washington. The offense only mustered three hits and two of them came from CJ Abrams. (27:15) It was a big day in Single-A as Travis Sykora won Carolina Pitcher of the Year, then pitched well on the mound for the Fred Nats, and the evening finished with a League Championship.
