In this episode, I share a deeply personal and wide ranging conversation I recently had with Greg Gerber, host of the Forward From 50 podcast. Greg originally came into my world more than a decade ago as a Podcasting A to Z student. Today, he hosts a show dedicated to people over fifty who know their best work is still ahead of them. The conversation became a powerful reflection on identity, ambition, reinvention, and what it means to step fully into the work you were made to do. This conversation tells the story of my journey from insurance agent to podcaster, from Podcast Answer Man to mindset and business strategist, and now into this next chapter where everything is coming together with more clarity and alignment than ever before. Key insights from this conversation Your voice and desire to communicate are not accidents. They are clues to what you are here to do. Mine started with CB radio and a toy microphone long before podcasting ever existed. Leaving a career that works is often harder than leaving one that fails. Walking away from insurance, and later from Podcast Answer Man, required trusting who I was becoming more than what I had already built. Podcasting A to Z did far more than launch shows. It revealed that most people were really looking for business clarity, confidence, and a way to create income and impact from what they already knew. The difference between a hobby and a business is not a podcast. It is having a clear ideal client, a real problem, and a way to solve it that people are willing to pay for. Your identity is not the role you played. Losing a job or retiring does not mean you lost who you are. It just means one chapter ended. Journaling is one of the fastest ways to reconnect with who you are, why you are here, and what you actually want. Desire is not something to be justified. It is something to be listened to. The 50 Things I Want exercise is a way to let that voice speak again. The people you surround yourself with either expand your vision or quietly shrink it. Choose wisely. The return of Podcast Answer Man is not nostalgia. It is a strategic move made possible by new tools, better leverage, and a deeper understanding of how I serve people best. The first fifty years of my life were preparation for the work I am doing now. Ready to start your own podcast If this episode stirred something in you and you have been thinking about starting a podcast or finally taking the one you have more seriously, I invite you to join me for my next session of Podcasting A to Z. This is my four week live coaching experience where you and I work together to turn your idea, message, and voice into real impact. You can learn more and register at PodcastingAtoZ.com

In this episode, I share a full behind the scenes look at everything I have been working on since I made the decision to bring Podcast Answer Man and Podcasting A to Z back as a primary focus in my business. Episode 802 was the story of why this decision happened. This episode is the story of what actually happened next. Over the past month, I have been rebuilding, reconnecting, and reactivating an entire ecosystem that had been dormant for nearly a decade. In this conversation, I walk you through the real work behind the scenes. The relationships, the systems, the strategy, and the momentum that started moving the moment I committed to this direction. I talk about landing a speaking engagement at Podfest Expo and what that means for reconnecting with the podcasting community. I share how reconnecting with people like Nick Pavlidis and Rob Greenlee has already started opening doors and reconnecting relationships in the industry. I also walk through how Podcast Answer Man is now back on a true weekly publishing schedule. Every Friday at 12:01am Eastern Time, there is a new episode. I also announce that The Cliff Ravenscraft Show is now back to a weekly schedule as well. Every Monday at 12:01am Eastern Time, there will be a new episode focused on business strategy, mindset, and the behind the scenes of what I am building. I share some of the emotional responses I have already received from longtime listeners who heard the Podcast Answer Man intro music again for the first time in years. Those messages reminded me just how meaningful this work has been in people's lives for more than two decades. I also talk about the strategic decisions I have made to support this new season, including moving the Podcast Answer Man website to PodPage, setting up new affiliate partnerships, rebuilding the Podcasting A to Z sales page, and launching a new series of live interviews called Where Are They Now featuring former Podcasting A to Z students who are still creating content more than a decade later. A big part of this episode is dedicated to the work I have been doing behind the scenes on my email list. I explain why I moved back to ConvertKit, how I am rebuilding my email sequences, and how I am creating separate paths for people who want podcasting focused content and those who want business, mindset, and entrepreneurial content. This episode is a snapshot of a turning point. It captures what it looks like when an idea becomes a commitment and when momentum starts to build. If you want the deeper story of why Podcast Answer Man came back, listen to Episode 802. If you want to understand how everything is now being built to support that decision, this episode is the next chapter. One of the most common questions I get from podcasters is how long a podcast episode should be, and in this episode I go much deeper than just throwing out a number. Podcast Episode Length In the first half of this episode, I answer a SpeakPipe voicemail from Nate about episode length and whether it is okay to mix short and long episodes within the same show. I explain why episode length is about how your show fits into the daily habits and routines of your listeners. The Pressure To Add Video In the second half of the episode, I respond to a voicemail from Jim about video podcasting. I talk honestly about the current hype around YouTube, Spotify video, and the pressure some people feel to turn every podcast into a video show. A New Method of Audio Production I pull back the curtain and explain exactly how I am producing Podcast Answer Man today in a way I never have before. I am recording and editing in small segments inside Adobe Audition, building the episode piece by piece, cutting, refining, and reshaping as I go. PodPage Update I also share updates about Podpage, including new features they added in response to my feedback and the SEO scoring tools that help optimize episode pages for search. 478 - Stephen Bartlett, Diary of a CEO, and The Myth of Six Simple Tips for Podcast Success

In this episode, I respond to a popular video from Stephen Bartlett, host of The Diary of a CEO, where he shares how his podcast generates seven figures a year and suggests that "anyone else can do it too" by following six simple tips for podcast success. Let me be clear. I respect Stephen immensely. He's built something extraordinary, and much of the advice he shares is genuinely solid. Consistency matters. Quality matters. Reaching new audiences matters. But what I want to unpack in this episode is the part of the story that often gets lost. Stephen's podcast success did not begin with a microphone, a YouTube channel, or six simple tips. It began years earlier with a decade of advantage building, brand recognition, media exposure, financial resources, a powerful network, and refined communication skills that most podcasters simply do not have when they launch their first show. When someone with that level of momentum says, “Here's how you can do the same,” it's easy for new and aspiring podcasters to underestimate the gap between where they are and where that kind of success actually starts. In this episode, I walk through Stephen's advice point by point, sharing what I agree with, where I think context matters, and why “simple” does not mean transferable or repeatable for everyone. I also talk honestly about the risks of assuming that adding video, hiring a team, or booking big guests will automatically lead to growth or revenue. Most importantly, I share what I believe is missing from the conversation. Practical, realistic ways everyday podcasters can consistently get in front of new audiences without celebrity status, massive budgets, or full production teams. This episode is about clarity. It's about protecting you from dangerous assumptions while still empowering you with strategies that actually work. How to Get Your Podcast in Front of a New Audience Often Here is the advice I shared for solving the real growth challenge most podcasters face: Be a guest on other podcasts that already serve your ideal listener. This remains the most effective way to gain new subscribers who already understand and value podcasts. Show up and serve in niche-specific communities such as Facebook groups, Reddit threads, Discord servers, Slack channels, and forums where your audience already gathers. Use strategic keyword targeting in podcast titles, episode titles, and descriptions so your show can be discovered through search inside podcast apps. The title of this episode alone will reach thousands of new potential listeners.. Create platform-native short-form content designed specifically for TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, or YouTube. Focus on building influence on each platform, not just pushing people to your podcast. Build and nurture an email newsletter so you can consistently invite people into your episodes through story-driven recommendations. Cross-promote with other creators through newsletter swaps, content collaborations, and mutual mentions. Write guest articles and long-form content for blogs, Substack, LinkedIn, and industry publications that link back to your podcast episodes. Speak on stages and virtual events, including conferences, webinars, masterminds, and workshops where trust transfers quickly. Encourage listener referrals by explicitly inviting people to share episodes and recognizing those who do. Experiment with paid promotion in podcast apps or niche-targeted ads with small, intentional budgets. Niche down further so word of mouth, authority, and search all work in your favor faster. Podcast success is all about understanding your starting point and choosing strategies that actually match it. And that's the conversation I share with you in this episode. Ready to Build a Podcast the Right Way? If you're serious about launching a podcast or taking an existing one to the next level, Podcasting A to Z is where I work with you personally to build a show that fits your goals, your resources, and your real life. Twenty years ago, I launched my very first podcast with no idea where it would lead. What began as a hobby eventually changed the trajectory of my life, my work, and my family. It also led to the creation of Podcast Answer Man and Podcasting A to Z, two things that played a massive role in the early podcasting industry. If you've followed my journey for any length of time, you know that I eventually stepped away from that brand and that work. And for years, many people assumed it was gone for good. In this episode, I share the full story of why Podcast Answer Man is back, why Podcasting A to Z is returning, and why this moment feels so aligned in a way it never could have before. This is the honest narrative of how this decision came to be. What led to this return I walk you through a recent Hot Seat conversation inside the Green Room Mastermind that sparked a major realization. I talk about burnout, identity, seasons of growth, and why the version of me who stopped Podcast Answer Man could not have sustained it long term. More importantly, I explain why the version of me today can. With tools like Notion and AI, questions that once required hours of effort can now be answered efficiently and accurately. Combined with clearer boundaries, daily meditation, nervous system regulation, and a very different life stage, the conditions are no longer the same. This return is about integrating everything I've learned since leaving. A conversation with Stephanie Stephanie joins me in this episode to reflect on what she noticed during this season of change. she brings up burnout, parenting load, business funnels, and the reality of what it takes to sustain meaningful work over decades. Her perspective adds grounding and clarity to why this return feels different, healthier, and more sustainable. Why this matters now Podcast Answer Man is once again the easiest entry point for people who don't yet know me. It's the front door into my world. From there, there are many ways I serve today. Podcasting A to Z. Business strategy and mindset coaching. Mastermind groups. Long-term client relationships. This return reconnects all of it. Podcast Answer Man will now be my primary weekly podcast, focused on podcasting, gear, tools, industry insights, and listener questions. The Cliff Ravenscraft Show will continue as a behind-the-scenes space for mindset, personal growth, and deeper reflections, released as inspiration strikes. What to do next If you want to hear from me every single week, make sure you are subscribed to Podcast Answer Man. You can find it at PodcastAnswerMan.com, where you'll find links to the main podcast apps and a place to submit your own podcasting questions. If you want to work with me personally and be guided step by step through launching your podcast, my next live session of Podcasting A to Z begins in January. The Real Definition of a Podcast Podcasting has been around for more than two decades. You would think the definition would be settled by now. Yet here we are in 2025, and people are still confidently giving advice in large Facebook groups while misunderstanding what actually makes a podcast a podcast. In this episode, I walk you through a recent thread inside a group, devoted to the topic of podcasting, with more than 103,000 members. Someone asked a simple question about whether video is required for podcasting. I explain how after reading the answers that followed, I felt compelled to jump in. I also share the exact comments I made, along with the misinformation that prompted them. You'll hear the real definition of a podcast. Not the internet myth. The accurate definition that has been true since the beginning. A podcast is episodic media content (Audio, Video, and/or Even PDF) that is delivered through a media enclosure in an RSS feed. That is the foundation this entire industry was built on. I also talk about why this matters. When tens of thousands of newer creators are watching these conversations, I want them to understand the medium they are working with. I want them to know why audio only is still a powerful choice. I want them to see that video can play a role, but it isn't required. And I want them to understand the technical heart of podcasting so they can make informed decisions rather than follow trends. Inside this episode, you'll hear: Why the debate about “audio only” versus “video podcasts” keeps resurfacing. How misinformation spreads inside creator communities. The real, technical definition of a podcast. When video files can, in fact, can be a podcast. Why audio first is still my personal preference. A mention of two podcast episodes from 2024 where I have shared thoughts on the role of video in your content strategy. Cliff Ravenscraft, Podcast Answer Man ( Check%20out%20episodes%2011%20to%2020%20of%C2%A0The%20Sales%20Podcast%20here. ) , Shares His Entrepreneurial Insight on how he got started podcasting as a hobby, then left his job in his families insurance business to launch a successful career as a podcaster. Cliff Ravenscraft is the founder of The Podcast Mastermind and gspn.tv (Generally Speaking Production Network). Together with his wife and a few close friends, Cliff has produced over 3,000 podcast episodes, since December 2005, devoted to Entertainment, Family, Faith, Fitness, Career, and Technology. In January 2008, Cliff left a very successful career as an insurance agent, to pursue podcasting full-time. He felt called to spend his life serving the community that had formed around the many shows in his network. Being a husband and father of three, he needed to find a way to produce content, serve his community, and also provide for his family. Cliff focused on successfully generating income through coaching/consulting at PodcastAnswerMan.com. He has helped thousands of individuals and organizations launch successful podcasts through his one-on-one consulting/coaching and through his online training courses. Part of the reason he was able to go out on his own was that he and his wife got debt free! They followed the advice Dave Ramsey espouses and got out of $80,000 in debt over about five years and the rest is history! Next, he got clear on what he wanted to do. He can't help people create “niches to make money” out of thin air. So you need to get clear on what you want to do, “find something you love to do so much that you would do it all day long for free. And then become so excellent at doing that one thing that people will beg you and pay you to do it for them.” Find something you can do for 18 months and do it 20-40 hours a week on top of your day job and you'll develop a good, solid foundation for success…but most people don't want to do that. Cliff was fortunate in that he had a background in coding and web design. Began blogging in 1996 when it was called “web journals” using AngelFire.com and hand-coding HTML. Discovered podcasting in 2005 and was commenting on the TV show “Lost.” He left a comment on Entertainment Weekly's website and they picked it up and overnight he went from 200-300 visitors per month, which was pretty good for a “guy in Northern Kentucky.” He called in and left a voicemail with his theory about the show, Lost, and gave his website with more information on his theory and EW.com does an entire show on his theory and linked to it. He went to thousands of visitors per month overnight! So he spent $15 on a microphone and got some free software and within a few days he had his podcast up on iTunes and by the third episode, he had 17,000 subscribers. By 10-15 episodes he had 10-15,000 people listening to his podcasts. “You never know who is listening to anything you put online.” iTunes was making each episode available the next day for purchase so his podcast was found right next to it. But you can duplicate it with popular culture. In the business category on iTunes, 40 of the top 50 business podcasts are Cliff's clients! If you can get 1,000 to 3,000 subscribers you can easily be in the top 50 in any category. You can earn $30,000 to $50,000 per month with less than 10,000 followers. He built PodcastAnswerMan.com from scratch. Cliff left his job in 12 months but was making $500 to $2,000 from his “Lost” podcast. (He was making money selling products and services and reselling as well as doing webinars, affiliate sales and some advertising on his site.) At the time PodcastAnswerMan had less than 2,000 subscribers at that time. The money came from products and services and training people one-to-one on how to podcast. His free tutorial is at LearnHowToPodcast.com ( http://learnhowtopodcast.com/ ). There is no funnel there. About 300 people per month launch a podcast without hiring Cliff and he thinks that's awesome! Learn how to podcast with Cliff's help for free. 40,000+ people have watched the first video and 10-14,000 people have gone through all 8 videos. Most of those stay on his mailing list, listen to his podcast and are getting to know, like and trust Cliff. But now he's no longer available for one-to-one training. You can join his group training as a four-week course, which you can find at PodcastingAtoZ.com ( http://podcastingatoz.com/ ). Check out Cliff's “WordPress For Podcasters” in his Products section of his site. Before you start your first podcast you need to ask yourself “Why do I want to podcast? What will I talk about? Who is my audience?” Start there. Cliff recommends audio over video since there are 97 million people that commute alone with an average commute time of 26.2 minutes. And they are jogging or doing the laundry or some other repetitive task that allows them to focus on every word that comes out of my mouth. Video is expensive and takes a long time to make it professional. You can spend less than $2,000 and sound as good as any FM radio person. I don't want people to view podcasting as a business. Stick with WordPress and use your website as your home on the web. Do at least one blog post per month. More if you can. Produce a weekly podcast that runs 20-40 minute is perfect and can become part of someone's ritual habits. If you make videos, do more than just show your face! Puts his videos on YouTube as he's not too worried about piracy. He wants to benefit from the SEO of YouTube. He'll use Vimeo Pro to protect premium content. Authenticity is HUGE to help calm the fears of the listeners about people thinking I'm too big for them. It helps you take it to the next level. Failure to launch and not knowing what to communicate is what stops people in their tracks. Set it and forget it. Fix it and improve it later. Create an outline. Practice. Do a little prep work. Cliff preps a minimum of an hour before each episode and each episode is an hour in length and then there are one to three hours of post-production work. Screencasting is totally different. You can easily do edits and people won't notice. Professional has benefits as well as being authenticity has benefits. Just get started. Most people's first episode is horrible! By the end of the year, Cliff had 17,000 subscribers! He just got started. Good enough was good enough. But he does want you to improve and take it to the next level. The average visitor spends 6-8 minutes on his site and he gets 30,000 visitors per month. Today's the day for podcasting! Show some love for this episode. Give me a shout out on Twitter.
