And now here's the host of the Faster than Normal podcast, the man whose preschool teacher said he would either be president or in jail by age 40, Peter Shankman. [01:36]: Peter Shankman: All right, who are we talking today? We're talking to Brett Greene. Brett is the founder of new Tech Northwest. It's a community of 60,000 technologists, and he's a transformational ADHD and executive coach. He helps high achieving tech entrepreneurs and business leaders reach tons of success. His journey with ADHD has included holding an Ma in counseling psychology, producing hundreds of experiences, working with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artists, and being a lifelong meditator professional DJ because you need to be professional DJ if you're going to work with a DHG. An advisory board member for SX Swiss Out West pitch a top 35 social media power influencer in Forbes, and he spoke at the White House. His clients have had tons of successful exits. He offers coaching, group coaching, professional training. He does a lot. And best part, he has some stories he wants to tell. Brett, welcome. Brett [00:02:19]: Thank you, Peter. It's great. Now, I think I first met you in 2006 at Blog World. Peter Shankman [00:02:26]: Yeah, it's been a while. We've known each other for quite some time. It's great to have you here. It's great to finally have you on the podcast. Give us 30 seconds about you. And I know that you have a bunch of stories you want to share with us. Brett [00:02:37]: Sure. Add first, real quick shout out to Skylight. My brother and I got that for our parents a few years ago and great gift for parents and other people who love to see the family photos and get excited when you load them in there. Peter Shankman [00:02:54]: That was their original product. The Skylight frame was the original product. The calendar www.skylightcal.com came next, which does mostly the same thing. Peter Shankman [00:03:00]: You still show the photos, but it also has a calendar on it. And I love that one for my daughter. Brett [00:03:03]: Cool Peter Shankman [00:03:04]: Awesome. Brett [00:03:05]: Yeah. ADHD so I'll try to make it short. I guess the thing I would share about my story is I didn't get diagnosed until a few years ago, but about 20 years ago had a nephew on Ritalin and his mom's a psychologist and she said, hey, you might want to try this. And I did. And I didn't want to be on meds my whole life, so I didn't do much about it. But when I took it, I took it on a Sunday and in 4 hours got more done than I got done in a week. And I was like, oh my gosh. People's brains like, do this. And I know you've heard this story of your time. I've known for a long time. But then there was a point where I needed to get diagnosed, which a lot of folks part of it was to stay married and to figure out everything else than wasn't working. ADHD diagnosis and understanding that really helped to understand where things were so that we had a new place to create agreements together and build relationship, which is what I've now been working with people with for their careers as well as their personal lives. My life was all over the place and not planned and just a lot of luck and weird things. I became a DJ at college radio station 17. Then I was a music director and the program director started. I was a club DJ and had a mobile DJ company in college, all of that. One thing ADHD wise, that's weird about that is in high school I got asked by someone I'd known for a while, like, hey, do you want to be a cheerleader? And this other guy in the class the asked too. And I was like, oh, I don't know. But the teacher doing it had been one of my favorite teachers. I'm like, okay, these guys from the college are showing a team now since we get it. So I was a DJ at the punk rock radio station while I was a cheerleader at the high school, and then I was the vice president of a fraternity while I was the program director of the punk rock radio station, which made no sense to other people. But I just did what felt good and what seemed interesting and than just led me into a career in the music industry that I didn't plan. And that was great. So I was in the music industry. Peter Shankman [00:05:18]: That's classic ADHD. I mean you realize that's classic ADHD I'm going to do what feels good and all of a sudden have a career. Brett [00:05:25]: Yeah. And felt weird and it didn't make sense. And the whole time I had anxiety during the career because in hindsight, with the diagnosis, I can realize, oh, this is another reason why I gave up a natural position for a regional. And I moved from La. To Boulder, Colorado, because I could have bosses in La. And New York, and I was on planes all the time, which now I know. ADHD we love to be in motion. And you, with your books and other people know we think better. We get centered when we're in motion. And I wasn't having to go into an office every day and feel awkward and weird and trying to navigate the politics and the things that I couldn't scan because our brains are more empathetic and we're not really into those things. I'm ADHD I'm dumping all over the place with this. So career in the music industry when I left that realized it wasn't the ladder that I wanted to be on started a digital marketing company in the early 2000s was Blogging when that first came out. That's how I ended up meeting you at Blog World. Just got into social media early which was the main reason why I built community. In hindsight I realized I'm a community builder and I did it with music, I did it online. Then when I moved to Seattle ten years ago, I ended up doing it with the tech community and I realized that I'm a connector. I like to help people. It's one thing that made me resonate with you when I first met you and other weird thing when I was in Boulder, I left school for the record industry went back and finished my degree while I was doing 14 state territory and realized I could keep going. So I went continued with my master's degree. It wasn't actually at Cu, it was at Europa University which was founded by a Tibetan Buddhist. Just happened to be there. Somebody asked me to be on student council. And the one six month term I did happened to be when they had, after 15 years, gotten the Dalai Lama to come to Denver and the did a big thing at the Pepsi Center, but he came to the school. So I actually had a private audience with the Dalai Lama. Again, all this is like luck. And following ADHD and even speaking at the White House, I sat in the audience of New Tech Boulder for six years with 400 people a month. And when I moved to Seattle, I couldn't believe nobody had done it. The formula started after 911 in New York with the founders of Meetup.com had created New York Tech Meetup, which is still going strong and people new York, right? So people are there and then they go other places. So somebody had left in Boulder and I had already been in San Francisco for twelve years. I couldn't believe nobody had done this in Seattle. So I'm like, oh, I don't want to just have a job or do something, I want to connect with community. So I started it and it was just great timing. And two years later happened to be when the founder Meetup.com did the first and so far only tech Meetup at the White House because he had known the first female CTO at Google and she was the first CTO of US government under Obama. And they reached out and they asked like 50 Meetup organizers to come speak. And again, not totally, I literally almost fell on my floor when I opened the email. How did this happen? This is just doing what I loved and good things coming so a little longer than I wanted to go. But I realized that a lot of stuff. And ADHD. Peter Shankman [00:09:04]: It's okay though, I like that, I like that. Tell us about a lot of good stuff, right? You took these risks, they paid off. You're doing what you love to do. But it's not all sunshine and roses. It never is. No, talk about some of the negatives. Brett [00:09:17]: The negative was not knowing I had ADHD and having anxiety all the time and always feeling wrong. In hindsight, I can see most of us go through what seems like and possibly is like daily emotional poking from the outside, which gives us great radar. But also in my case I realized I also learned after I found out ADHD, and I know you've heard this a lot of times, then I discovered rejection, sense of Dysphoria, and for me I was like, oh my gosh, that's the deal. Like as much as I thought ADHD changed my entire understanding of myself and put me on a healing path around it. RSD just deepened my empathy for everybody else going through it. Add I was like, oh my gosh, I'm glad I'm not alone. But I feel for all the other people that with rejecting sensitive Dysphoria, being so outer oriented, which I think the positive of that is, makes me a great community organizer. The weird thing is, pre COVID, I was producing 52 events a year, getting on stage three or four times a month in front of hundreds of people. And I did it because I loved the connection with the people. Add, I was scared shitless every time. And still now I've been doing this ten years, and I get the fulfillment, because people come up and say, oh, I met a great business partner, I got a job, I met this wonderful person, I got this great idea from the presenters. And so I get the fulfillment from the community telling me that what I'm doing is valuable for them, and the saying, thank you so much for doing this, that this exists for us to find each other. But I get on stage and freak out every time. And when I had jobs, in hindsight I realized it wasn't just that I was a horrible employee, it was because this is actually something I talked to some of my clients about because especially in tech they go through this a lot. I'm not going to throw a blanket statement, but I'll say in general it seems that most companies are based on neurotypical systems. They're hierarchical and they're generally based on how do you get more money? How do you get more power? How do you get a better title? Most of the neurodivergent folks than I've met and work with, we are wired because of those things I was talking about in early life I think to be pretty empathetic. We have huge bullshit detectors and we don't work well in those systems. And so we want to go to work, do a great job. Our brains see all these problems people don't see, make all these great connections, create solutions that gives us dopamine it's awesome. Want to do that great job, be acknowledged for it, move up the ladder at work from doing a great job, go home and have a nice life. Then we don't understand why the guy who does half the work but has radar to find the right people to get his power and money higher is great at sniffing those people out, giving those people what they need. They sniff out the folks who do really hard work, usually a lot of neurodiversity folks who aren't necessarily or not self promoters generally and out our great work and they get to be the face of the work. They can go up the ladder and go, hey, see what our team is doing even though they're not doing the work. And you watch those people move up the ladder. And I don't say it seems like most situations are than way. I've talked to over 200 tech professionals that are neurodivergent in the last two years and I'd say almost all of them have experience of this, of like, why can't I just go do my great job, have a good career, have a good life? Because we're not wired to play those games and we hate the politics and we hate the nonsense. Peter Shankman [00:13:04]: Yeah, 100%. It's very accurate. That's very accurate. I think that one of the interesting things is that when that happens, instead of fighting it, we internalize it and that doesn't help us at all. It makes it even worse. Brett [00:13:20]: Yeah. And that's actually another thing with coaching that I work with people around is in coaching they talk about that little voice as the saboteur or the wounded child and your more positive self, the leader within the wise adult is really connected to your successes, your wins, and truly who the light you really are. But for ADHD I call it the YAB but full, because it seems like we could work 40 years on cancer and we could cure cancer, but as soon as we get at the top of that mountain, we're never looking back. And we don't acknowledge all the work that went into that and everything we did, because we're in the moment, we're getting the dopamine while we're hyper focused building it. We get to the top of the mountain, we cured cancer, and for 30 seconds it's awesome. And then we look around at the horizon and see all the other mountains and that little yeah, but Fro goes, yeah, but multiple sclerosis, what are you doing with that? And we're like, oh yeah, I'm a piece of crap, I need to go work on that. Peter Shankman [00:14:21]: No, it's so totally true. So totally true. Brett, I want to keep it at 15 minutes like we always do, but we'll definitely have you back. 14:26 - How can people find you? Socials: Yes. LinkedIn @ BrettGreene Web: newtechnorthwest.com add epsiloncoaching.com. Brett: Can I just say one more? Go for it. I know you try to keep it tight. Yeah. One thing we talked about real quick on here than I think just because it helps people a lot is understanding neurodivergent more as an operating system that's different, like Apple versus Android. And when you understand that it's low executive function, low working memory, low dopamine, low serotonin, you can explain that to people, then you can create a new understanding and context with each other to move forward in a more positive and helpful way. So a quick example is if two people go to lunch, one person orders mayonnaise with their fries, the American goes, that's weird, and feels like it's really awkward. Add strange and why would a person do that? And then the other person says, oh, I'm Canadian, that's what we do. And immediately it just melts. It's like, oh, you're Canadian, right? What they do. The truth is we haven't been educated as a society. We're not educated on neurodivergent. Unfortunately. It's up to us to educate the folks around us. And actually I'm working on a book now on communication specifically to help neurodivergent people easily in like a 20 minutes conversation be able to explain what a neurodivergent brain is. So that now the understandings of like, well, why didn't you do that thing you said you were going to do? Why do you forget this now you're not going to get labeled as lazy and negative and these things because from a neurotypical perspective that stuff could be true. Bu once they understand a neurodivergent brain and go like, oh, well, you don't have the parts in your brain for that. You're at 20% executive function versus 100, and by eleven or 12:11 A.m. Or twelve you're spent for the day. Whereas I started with ten gallons of fuel I ended up with four and I'm tired. You started with two and you're at zero and we're acting like it's the same thing because we don't have the language to explain. Peter Shankman [00:16:24]: No. Excellent, excellent. Great answer. [00:16:27]: So thank you for letting me do that and thank you for allowing me to be on here. I really appreciate peter, glad to have you, Brett. Peter Shankman [00:16:33]: Definitely. How to Achieve a Mindset that Leads to Success in Business Why do some people achieve great success in business while others fail? The way they think about and approach their business is a big factor, and that's something that i was asked to talk about as a guest on a popular business podcast. In this podcast episode, I'm going to share with you the questions that I was asked and the outline that I used to respond to each question. To start us off, can you talk a bit about your background and how you've become an authority on podcasting and business? I started podcasting as a hobby, with my wife, about the television show LOST in 2005. We were in the first hundred or so podcasters in the world. By our 3rd episode, we had 27,000 subscribers. By the end of our first year in podcast, we launched several other shows and were reaching 100's of Thousands of listeners. Within 2 years, I made the decision to leave the family business to do podcasting full-time. Main source of income was Podcast Coaching - Teaching people how to podcast. Things really took off, professionally, as the result of a few influencers that had become coaching clients. We hosted a Disney Cruise for our community. Our story got the attention of the CEO and co-founder of BlogWorld, the industry leading conference in social media at the time. I was invited to come speak. Room was standing room only. I was invited to become the Director of Podcasting for the BlogWord, which eventually rebranded to New Media Expo. In 12 years, I helped more than 40,000 people successful launch their podcast, generating a few million dollars in revenue through the process. In a broad sense, what is a "business mindset"? What all does that term include and describe? I find it helpful to contrast the term “business mindset” with the term “employee mindset.” A business mindset includes the following beliefs. People pay for value or transformation, not for your time. You do not have to work hard for money, you simply need to provide value. How much you charge for your products and services are based upon how much value you bring to your client/customer. There is no such thing as failure, there is only education. Temporary setbacks allow you to learn new lessons that lead towards the perfect plan to get to your desired outcome. What doesn't get measured, doesn't improve. etc. What is the difference between a "growth mindset" and a "fixed mindset", and which one is better for an entrepreneur? A fixed mindset is the belief that you have to work with the amount of skills, abilities and talents that you were born with, or that you have attained by a certain age. There's a saying that goes… “You can't teach an old dog new tricks.” A growth mindset is one that believes that you never stop learning and growing. You can always learn a new skill. Abilities and talents can be acquired through passion and practice. A growth mindset is better for everyone, but it is certainly a required mindset for any entrepreneur who will need to pivot in business to keep up with the changing world we live in. Why is your mindset important as a business leader? What are the advantages of having the right mindset? Mindset boils down to “A set of beliefs that you hold in your mind.” What you believe is possible. What you believe is not possible. How you believe things SHOULD BE What you believe you SHOULD or SHOULD NOT do. The problem is that most of our beliefs were established during the first 7 years of our life, before we had a rational critical thinking mind. ALL BELIEFS HAVE CONSEQUENCES Our beliefs determine how we think and feel about any situation in life. How we think and feel determines what actions we take. The actions we take determines the results that we get. So every belief (or your mindset) about anything has either a Positive or Negative Consequence. The advantage of having a GROWTH MINDSET is that you can actually CHANGE what you believe. Is a "business mindset" the same thing as an "entrepreneurial mindset", and if not how do those differ? I suppose you could be a “senior leader” within a business and have a “business mindset” but not have what it takes (mindset wise) to actually own your own business. An entrepreneurial mindset requires the person to have certain beliefs around the idea of “risk taking” and realizing and fully accepting that the results of those risks are their responsibility. How can the wrong mindset negatively impact a business? What are the risks or downsides of failing to cultivate a business mindset? Half of all businesses are fail in their first year. 80% are fail within five years. 96% fail within the first 10 years. 4% of businesses last more than 10 years. However, that doesn't mean they succeed. That just means that they are “still standing,” even if they are not profitable. My belief is that “the wrong mindset” is a reason of nearly every business failure. Success in any area of life, including business is… 20% knowing what to do and how to do it. 80% Mindset The ability to consciously and rationally evaluate and change what you believe to be true. The ability to control how you think and feel about any given situation. The ability to control your “emotional state of mind.” The ability experience fear and move forward in spite of what could go wrong. The downside of failing to cultivate a business mindset is that your business will almost certainly fail. What are the key characteristics of a successful business mindset? People pay for value or transformation, not for your time. You do not have to work hard for money, you simply need to provide value. How much you charge for your products and services are based upon how much value you bring to your client/customer. There is no such thing as failure, there is only learning new lessons that lead towards the perfect plan to get to your desired outcome. What doesn't get measured, doesn't improved. etc. What are the main "red flags" that someone needs to shift their mindset? The two most common red flags are: They often experience stress and overwhelm when faced with any unexpected result or situation within their business. The business is not consistently profitable month to month. How are mindset and outlook related? I think of outlook as “having vision.” There is a saying that goes… “Without vision, the people will perish.” I believe that this also applies to business… “Without vision, the business will perish.” The quality of the vision that an entrepreneur will have for their business will be directly in proportion to their mindset. If they have limited beliefs about what is possible, they will have a limited vision of what they create. Is there one ideal business mindset that everyone should aspire to, or does the right mindset vary between people and industries? For the most part, I believe that the right mindset, once acquired, can be used to achieve success in not only any business or in any industry, but also in any other area of life. This is why you will sometimes see the CEO of a major corporation able to transition and experience success as the CEO of a different corporation in another industry. As for the one ideal mindset that everyone should aspire to, I'd say…. You know exactly what it is that you want. You absolutely believe that what you want is possible. You are fully convinced that what you want is something YOU MUST HAVE. You have DECIDED that you will get what you want. You are committed to creating an action plan to attain what you want. You are devoted to evaluating the results of your actions plan and changing your approach until you find the perfect plan of attaining what you want. You will have want you want. What is one thing about business mindsets that people often get wrong or misunderstand, and how should they approach it instead? Many people believe they can change their limited mindset (beliefs) simply by reciting “affirmations.” If I can just say it enough, eventually I'll start to believe it. I am a firm believer in affirmations. However, they don't work unless you discover the power of the “sub conscious mind” and how it works. I recommend two resources on this. Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. Chapter 4 of the book Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill on the topic of “Autosuggestion.” What are the steps to identifying your current business mindset for someone who's never done this kind of self-reflection before? By simply asking a few questions. What is something that you would like to experience in your business that you are not currently experiencing? Do you believe it is possible for you to experience that in your business? How long do you think it would take to make this a reality in your business? What are 1, 2 or 3 actions that you could take within the next 7 days, 30 days, and 90 days that will get you closer to this desired outcome? Why haven't you already taken these actions? What is one or two things that you need to put an end to to make this a reality? Why have you not already put an end to theses things? All of these questions will reveal your current mindset and beliefs related to that Dream, Goal and/or Desired Outcome. Once you've identified where your mindset needs some adjustments, what next? What actionable steps can someone take to shift their mindset? Make a list of all the beliefs that are associated beliefs in that particular area. Determine the source of those beliefs. Evaluate the truth of those beliefs. Disassociate from beliefs that do not support the movement toward your desired outcome. Replace limiting beliefs with empowering, alternative beliefs. Condition these new beliefs through repetition and environment. Changing how you think isn't easy. What are some resources or tools that can help people make the right mindset adjustments effectively? "Changing how you think isn't easy" is a belief. However, I have found that it is incredibly easy to change how you think, in an instant, once you know how the sub-conscious mind works. Resources that I recommend: Book - Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz Book - Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Book - Unlimited Power by Tony Robbins What are some signs that someone could benefit from coaching or mentorship to help them shift their mindset? Top Three Signs That Come To My Mind: If you are easily stressed and overwhelmed when an unexpected situation shows up in your business. If you are not consistently experiencing profit, month to month, in your business. If you feel unfilled in your work. How should someone find and choose a mentor or coach if they don't have a big professional network to draw from? Find a Role Model Someone who is already experiencing what it is that you want to experience. Someone who has already read the books, taken the courses, gone to the seminars, created the plans, experienced the setbacks and used what they learned to create a system that produced the result that you desire. Find someone who's message resonates with you at your inner core. How should a business owner take high stake decisions? Any framework which aids in making decisions? Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed. Fully investigate The Mastermind Principle and take your high stake decision to your personal mastermind group. Ultimately, follow your gut / intuition. What are some mindset tips for dealing with self-inflicted wounds when it comes to business? Read the book The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks and learn about the Upper Limit Challenge. Read the book Secrets of The Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker and discover the mindset about money that is causing your self-sabotage. Now at this stage of success what advice would you give to your teenage self? Discover how your sub-conscious mind works. Learn the Power fo Auto-Suggestion. Decide, CONSCIOUSLY, what you CHOOSE to believe. Learn how to control and master your emotional state of mind at all times. Can you tell us about your most bizarre business encounter? The day a check for $12,000 showed up in the mail. You can see the check and the letter that came with it at MindsetAnswerMan.com/check If you could sell your product/service to one celebrity, who would it be? Already accomplished Dan Miller, author of the book 48 Days To The Work You Love If there was a movie made about your journey, what would the title be? Free The Dream! A mindset is a very intangible thing. As you're making these adjustments, how can you evaluate if they're successful? What are some signs that your mindset is changing for the better? First, I believe that mindset is an incredibly tangible thing. I can determine a person's mindset on any topic within 3 to 5 minutes and I can predict what their experience of their life will be related to that topic in the same amount of time. As for signs that their mindset is changing for the better… Simply evaluate to see if they are getting better results related to the things they desire to accomplish in life. Are they dreaming bigger dreams? Are they pushing through their fears? Are they accomplishing more? Once someone's made those shifts, how can they prevent themselves from slipping back into bad habits? How do you make mindset changes stick? Repetition is the mother of skill. Don't stop doing what has worked to help you get where you are. Upgrade Your Peer Group The quality of your life will be determined by the expectations of your peer group. Get into a Mastermind Group of people who are living life according to the mindset you desire. What is your favorite "mindset hack"? Are there any quick and easy steps someone can take to make impactful change? The Mindset Principle: Go to a mastermind group of people who are already operating in life at the level you desire to operate. Tell them what it is that you desire and instantly gain insight from their education, experience, skills, talents and abilities. A single conversation with this group can shift your perception of what is possible. How does someone with a success-oriented mindset respond to setbacks and failures? Some do not actually understand the concept of “failure.” They simply evaluate what can be learned by the results of actions taken. They apply what they learn and change their changed approach until they get what they desire. They see setbacks as the opportunity to develop a more perfect plan to get to their desired outcome and to create safeguards for future similar setbacks. They expect the unexpected. Can you share an example of a business leader who has an ideal mindset? What does that look like in practice? Steve Jobs. He often had a vision for a product that he wanted to create. He often had the top engineers in the world tell him that want he wanted to create was not possible. He often fired those “experts” who had a fixed mindset about what was possible. He transferred his vision of what he wanted to create to those engineers who were able to dare to dream about the pushing the boundaries of what is believed to be possible. Today a few billion people benefit daily from many products that were, at one point, just a “thought” in the mind of Steve Jobs. On the other side, can you share an example of a poor mindset causing business problems or failure? The time I had a client schedule a one hour consulting call with me to help solve a technical issue with a piece of podcasting equipment. He knew that I charged $300 per hour with a minimum of one hour. We got on the call and I solved his problem within two minutes. He was incredibly pleased and requested that I send him the invoice for $300. I refused! Learn more about this story at MindsetAnswerMan.com/free How does having the right mindset make someone better at leading and motivating other people? A person with the right mindset can influence others. They can help shift the perceptions of those who they serve about what is possible. They can help those they serve see their circumstances from a different perspective. What are some day-to-day habits of people who have the right mindset for success? They read/study for INSIGHT - Not agreement or rejection! Journaling Meditation Rest / Power Napping Recreation Working Out What are some bad habits that could negatively affect someone's mindset without them even realizing it? Eating lots of processed foods, and consuming too much sugar. Watching too much NEWS MEDIA Watching movies and television shows with narratives that consistently show the business owner as the villain. How does helping others help improve your mindset? I don't want to run the risk of answering this in such a way that assumes that helping others will improve your mindset. There are many powerful books out there that talk about the concept of “When Helping Others Hurst You.” I don't have any particular book recommendation on this topic. However, I have many stories of experience. With that said, I believe that the best thing that you can do is to Help Yourself by Improving Your Mindset. It's only in having a healthy mindset that you can truly help others. This is why it was once said that the second greatest thing a person can do is to “Love others AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF.” If you've ever been on an airplane, you've likely been told that in case of emergency, you should put your secure your own source of oxygen before trying to help someone else attain their source of oxygen. Who are some thought leaders in the business world who have inspired you and been influential in developing your business mindset? Dan Miller, author of the book 48 Days The The Work You Love Michael Hyatt, New York Times Best-Selling Author and former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishing Tony Robbins Napoleon Hill Every member of my Green Room Mastermind Group. Ray Edwards Pat Flynn Michael Stelzner Mark Mason Leslie Samuel I've met with these guys for one hour, every week, since October 2010 How do negative mindsets develop in the first place? Are there common root causes you see in your coaching and mentorship work? Typically most of our negative, limiting, beliefs were adopted during the first 7 years of our life. Things our parents said or did. Things our Teachers said or did. Things our religious leaders said or did. Things our peers said or did. Our Culture The News Media Etc. What are some common myths or misconceptions about business mindsets, and why are those wrong? That affirmations, alone, will work. That affirmations don't work. Affirmations do work. However, only after you do the work to become consciously aware of and then remove any competing belief. Most people don't have a “deep feeling” of belief that their new “affirmed statement” is actually true. Could you talk a bit about the Mastermind Principle? What is it, how did you learn about it, and how does it lead to business success? I have an entire podcast on this topic at UpgradeYourPeerGroup.com The mastermind principle is… When two or more people come together in a spirit of perfect harmony with the intention to focus on a desired outcome. That group can come up with insights and ideas that would be impossible for any member to come up with individually. I learned about the mastermind principle from Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. A person in a healthy mastermind group can accomplish more in a single year, with the aid of their mastermind group, than they could in a lifetime if they relied on their own effort. What is the relationship between business mindset and goal setting? How big a person is able to dream is determined by their mindset. The ability to achieve any goal is directly determined by their mindset. What is your favorite business book and why? Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill It is the most thorough and in-depth study in what a “successful business mindset” is that has ever been published in a single book. When we are outside looking in, things always look harder than they really are. In 2005, I discovered podcasting and it seemed far beyond anything I could ever do. The tech looked far too difficult for me to ever launch a podcast. Now, you may already have a podcast. You may have mastered the tech necessary to publish every week. If you listen closely, this episode can help you just as much as the new podcaster. We often encounter new challenges in our lives and think those feats are far beyond our capabilities. Think about the things you wish you could accomplish in the upcoming year. Maybe it is building a businessess around your podcast. You might have some really big names on your interview wish list. Maybe you've been wanting to build a sales funnel, but have no idea where to even start. All great journeys begin with the first step. Unfortunately with my podcast, it took me 8 years before I took that first step. I want to see you find success much quicker. RADIO It was March 2005. I was sitting in my living room reading a copy of Wired magazine. This was 2005 before everyone was reading magazines online. I was old school with the physical pages between my fingers. Wired magazine covers the latest in science and technology. It is nowhere near my wheelhouse, and I have no idea why I was reading it. This is probably the only issue of Wired I have ever owned. My magazines of choice have always been magazines like Inc. and Entrepreneur. I have also had a subscription to Fast Company every now and then. At the time, I was the program director of a Top 40 radio station and had my own show. Both were very successful, but the industry was changing rapidly. Radio was becoming homogonized in a big way. Stations were beginning to sound the same. Creativity was being sucked out by big business. The industry was losing its personality in favor of best practices. Think color-by-number. Radio stations weren't finding great, new artists to expose. We weren't doing big, exciting promotions any longer. Morning shows and other on-air talent were being told to shut up and play the music. Which was the same music you were hearing everywhere else. There had to be something more for me. WIRED In that March 2005 issue of Wired magazine, I discovered an article called "Adam Curry Wants To Make You An iPod Radio Star". Maybe this was the reason I had the magazine. With his big 80s hair, Adam Curry was an MTV VJ from 1987 into the mid-90s. When MTV was music television that played music videos, Curry was one of the guys jocking it between the tunes. Now we are 10 years past his MTV heyday. Adam Curry's tech side has flourished. He was actually the first owner of MTV.com before anyone realized owning URLs was a thing. Curry was 40 in 2005. He launched iPodder a year earlier. Wired described the platform like this … "A tiny application that he believes has the power to challenge commercial radio. iPodder is the bastard offspring of the blog and the Apple MP3 player. It combines the hyperactive talkiness of blogs and the hipness of iPods into something utterly new: the podcast. iPodder uses the blog syndication tool RSS to automatically download homebrew radio shows, podcasts, directly into a portable MP3 player." I was mesmerized. So much so that I tore that article out of the magazine and saved it. I don't even read Wired magazine and here I am saving an article from it. ANYONE Curry's studio was his Audi A8. He would record from the front seat with his interview guest in the passenger. This was crazy to me. The article continued with, "Welcome to podcasting, the medium that promises a future where anyone can make radio, instead of just listen to it." Anyone. That was the magical word. You see, I had been in radio for 15 years at this point. I wanted so badly to own a radio station. Unfortunately, stations were being gobbled up by big companies. The ownership dream was fading. Now big haired Adam Curry comes along and says I could do it from my car. And, people would actually listen. But I didn't know the first thing about tech. I barely knew what an .mp3 was. We were still playing music at the radio station off of CDs. I surely didn't know what an RSS feed was. PERFECT Then there was the issue of perfectionism. How could I possibly record a quality podcast from the front seat of a car when I had been working to create perfect radio audio for a decade-and-a-half? We had perfect studios and perfect microphones. The audio software cost thousands of dollars. Scripts were fine-tuned and meticulous. Now Adam was hanging some mics from the visors in his car and recording whatever came to mind. How could this be? I tucked the article away and continued on my radio journey. DAVE Then one day in late 2012 I received an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. I had been writing a blog about content creation for podcasters. Most of the content was mined from my years in radio. My writing had been picked up by Blog World. They were looking to expand the podcast section of their website and liked what I was writing. Dave saw the articles and reached out to see how we might help each other. That was the start of a great friendship. It was also the start of my podcast. I told Dave what I didn't know. He showed me how easy it could be. Launching a podcast takes minimal equipment. You need a USB mic and a computer to plug it into. You need some software to edit the audio. Audacity is free. Then, you need an audio host like Libsyn to store and distribute the show. By the way, get your first month of Libsyn free using the promo code PTC at Libsyn.com. Next thing you know, my first episode was published in 2013. It was a lot easier than I expected. And who knows when it would have actually happened if Dave hadn't reached out that day. We all have enough information. Sometimes we just need a little accountability. What are you working on today? In the next 12 months, what do you want to accomplish? Chances are, the answers are right in front of you. They are just disguised as complicated. You don't know what you don't know. If you look under the hood and examine the real steps it takes to get there, you'll be surprised. It usually isn't nearly as hard as it looks. You just need to take the first step. Get started. BACK TO ADAM The funny thing is, I went back to revisit that Wired article. At the end of the piece, it says … How to make your own podcast ... Plug in a USB headset with earphone and microphone into your computer. Install the free Audacity .mp3 recorder for Windows, Mac or Linux. Make a recording and save it as an .mp3. Upload the .mp3 file to your website or blog. Follow the instruction on iPodder to create an RSS feed on your site. Today it is very similar, but much easier. Libsyn creates that RSS feed for you. Today, you plug in the mic and record the show. Audacity is still free, though I prefer Hindenburg Journalist for $95. Find a link at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/JV. Export and upload the .mp3 file to Libsyn just like you would upload a video to Facebook and you are set. Your podcast is up and running. GET STARTED But, like I said … we have enough information. We just need some accountability. There are times we just need someone to show us the way rather than telling us. The information was right in front of me. It took 8 years before Dave gave me the shove I needed to get started. Now, I'm 368 episodes into this journey. If you are ready to launch your podcast and would like some help seeing the way, I am holding a free training. It is called "How to Launch a Podcast to Attract Your Ideal Clients in 30 Days or Less". Dave Jackson: I've been podcasting since April of 2005. My podcast about podcasting has been downloaded over 1.6 million times (as of 2017). I've helped hundreds of people launch podcasts. This means I not only do I understand the technology but I can explain it in a plain English “geek-speak free” environment. So if you're interested in the nomadic lifestyle and thinking of becoming a travel blogger, YouTuber or travel podcaster, you might find this interesting. Palle Bo: "Rick, you're the head honcho of this game." Rick Calvert: "Grand poobah, is what we like to call it. Palle Bo: "How long time have you been with the TBEX. Because it wasn't from the very beginning, as far as I understand." Rick Calvert: "Since 2012, when we bought TBEX. I actually started another event before that, called "Blog World" in 2007. So I've been actively involved in blogs since 2000, with travel blogs since 2007 and with TBEX since 2012." Palle Bo: "What's your background? How did you get into the whole game of travel blogging?" Rick Calvert: "I was a conference organizer. It was my job, I've done really really big events like a hundred thousand people. I used to work for a place; you may have heard of, called Comic Con. And I was a political blogger. I started a blog about politics, and this was again very early days, there weren't a lot of people doing that, and I wanted to go to a blogging show, and it didn't exist. So I started doing the research, and I'm like 'oh people would go to that?' And I created what we called Blog World. But we knew from the very beginning we identified these different segments that would be really important and political blogs was one of them and travel blogs were one of them. And we had a track for travel at Blog World. But Kim it started TBEX. And she's a travel blogger. So all the travel bloggers were going to TBEX. And in 2012 it was Gary Arndt the told me you should talk to Kim. You know I think Kim wants to sell TBEX and that's when we got involved." Palle Bo: And in recent years a few other similar or somewhat similar conferences have propped up...". Rick Calvert: "Imitators we call them." Palle Bo: "Do you see them as competitors or just extra angles on what you're doing?" Rick Calvert: "There are there's no other event that's the size of TBEX, that has the history of TBEX, that has the breadth of education is TBEX. So no, in that way no. Of course, there's always competition. You can only take so many trips a year, you've only got so much time. So yes that's competition. But we're friends with all those people and a lot of them got their start at TBEX." Palle Bo: "I didn't get the memo, that you can only do so many a year. I think I'm doing four this years. Plus two Nomadic Cruises. Yeah, I'm going all in this year. I don't know exactly how that happened. But for people who've never been to a TBEX, can you describe what goes on? It takes place in two days." Rick Calvert: "Yes, the conferences two days. You know, it's education. We have breakout sessions, some keynotes like today with Cory Lee was an incredible inspiration. And then there's speed networking where there are business meetings between the bloggers and the DMOs and the brands and very short eight minutes sit-downs. Who are you? What do you do? Do we have a good fit? Yes. Great, let's talk later. No. Nice to meet you. See you later. So you're not wasting time. And then there are trips that happened before the conference that the tourist board organizes, there are trips that happen after the conference of the tourist board organizes and then people apply to go on those different trips so people are on average for a TBEX attendee at a destination is ten days for the two-day conference. And obviously, a lot of people do stuff on their own. So like maybe you're planning a trip to New York already, said I'm coming there for TBEX, and I'll go to Niagara Falls while I'm there or whatever else." Palle Bo: "And there are around, as far as I know, 700 attendees?" Rick Calvert: "650." Palle Bo: "Is that is that the biggest?". Rick Calvert: "No, it's the biggest in North America in a couple of years now, were sold out. We couldn't have any more people here, and you can see how busy it is. Toronto was the biggest ever. That was 1200. But that was a bunch of Canadians because we were in a really big city and that was when everybody like just went "TBEX Crazy" that year too. But everybody said it was too big. So we've never wanted it to be that big again. We like this size. 650 is a good size." Palle Bo: I remember my very first travel bloggers conference was in Stockholm a week into my travel. And I thought "oh my god, I'm with my people." And since then I've been traveling fulltime, and now I'm one of the old guys here." Rick Calvert: "That's right. You're one of the grandfathers of travel podcasting". Palle Bo: How do you see the whole industry evolving from where we were five years ago, and where are we going?" Rick Calvert: "Well the first thing is that more creators are making a real living. There are a lot more people being successful that way. So that is fantastic. A lot more tourist boards and brands understanding the value and really wanting to work with them. By the same token, there are more new people all the time who are inexperienced and really don't know what to do. We help teach them and obviously that's a big challenge for tourist boards to figure out, who are the right people to work with. Even if a blogger is new doesn't mean they're not good. And so how do you determine if this person has good content and then that content is a good fit for my brand. And again that's kind of what we teach people here. It's not always the biggest numbers that are the most important thing". Palle Bo: "Right. Mike Huxley said that as well in the in the panel debate, and he was actually on one of the episodes, I did in TBEX Ostrava, talking about the whole thing that you should put a price and you should sell yourself. You shouldn't just take a free trip even though you only have maybe 5000 visits a month on your site." Rick Calvert: "Yes, Mike is one of those people, that are pushing in that direction is just for professionalism in the space, and I would say as a whole, that travel bloggers are far more professional than they were five years ago, and that will continue to happen. And the travel brands have a more of a system of measuring "who do I work with, how do I measure it, was it was a good deal for us in the end." So I think, that professionalism on both sides is continuing to improve." Palle Bo: "You get to travel a lot for these events as well. But you're not a travel blogger. But I'm curious to know, where are you going next year." Rick Calvert: "Haha, everybody wants to know...". Palle Bo: "I remember actually in Ostrava in the Czech Republic, we shared a taxi, and I was pushing us, and you said it was very close to being published and I still don't know where we're going." Rick Calvert: "It's still very close for Europe. We are going to announce North America tomorrow. So yeah. And Europe any day. Any day. And I'll tell you this is a country where they like to do things slowly. So that's why it hasn't been announced yet.". Palle Bo: "Is it a place where they say Manana." Rick Calvert: "Haha. It's not Spain. I can tell you that it's not Spain. Although we love Spain and in particular we love Costa Brava Catalonia." Palle Bo: "But we also like Greece?". Rick Calvert: "Love Greece. I'll tell you, this it's a country we haven't been to yet. It's a country and western Europe. So there's a couple of tips. Palle Bo: "OK. Interesting. It's, but it's already been announced that we're going to Zimbabwe sometime next year." Rick Calvert: "Yes. There is a conference going on in Zimbabwe right now while we're here. So you know. They had a government change - a coup basically, then an election which went well - as well as you could expect to think. But we're actually dealing with a private group in Zimbabwe called Rise Zimbabwe, not the government. This is a collection of hotel owners and tour operators who do business in Africa that are working out the logistics of hosting TBEX.". Palle Bo: "Rick, it's always a pleasure, thank you." I can reveal that the next TBEX North America is going to be in Billings Montana in September 2019. Next Monday there'll be another episode from North Carolina where attend the Greensboro Pride and speak to a transgender woman and meet a guy with a cross trying to preach that being gay is a sin. All this and much more next Monday. And next Friday you'll get another interview with a guy in the Travel Media Industry. His name is Shane Dallas and calls himself The Travel Camel. He is the conference of TBEX Europe and the guy that booked me to speak about travel podcasting at the conference in Ostrava, the Czech Republic not that long ago. Visit TBEX by clicking here.

Education, space, consumer devices, and the future are just a few topics the crew discussed in this week's episode. Let us know what you think of the show! 2. Steve's BlogWorld Experience Steve had an amazing experience of attending BlogWorld in Las Vegas. Next year, Dave and Mikee will definitely be joining him because Steve had a blast. Meeting some great personalities such as Grammar Girl and Calli Lewis was just the start of what Steve reports on. Add to that, the laundry list of keynote speakers and it made for a great weekend in the Nevada desert. 3.Today's Apple keynote Steve and Mikee provide a solid breakdown as it applies to Apple's keynote presentations on Wednesday. Dave sits back and enjoys the conversation. Devices and items discussed include: FaceTime for the Mac, iLife ‘11, Mac OS X Lion, the Mac App Store, and the newly designed MacBook Air. Tune in to see if you need to pick any of these up or if you are considering upgrading some existing software. 4.Verizon to sell Samsung Tab for $599.99 Verizon is going to be selling the latest tablet device by Samsung. The upcoming Galaxy Tab will sell for $599 or $630. With Verizon already announcing plans to sell the iPad next year, it's definitely a questionable move on Samsung and Verizon's part. Another dimension is that the Galaxy Tab is running the Android OS, an OS Google has stated as not great for a tablet device. 5.Microsoft protects nonprofit orgs from anti-piracy take down Microsoft continues its international philanthropic approach to conducting business. Microsoft is going to be providing free and legit software licenses to nonprofits that current use pirated software. Is this a good move for Microsoft? Is Microsoft doing this for the PR benefits? This weeks episode Dave and Steve discuss the generational differences and similarities with new school vs old school tech. Are your online passwords secure and do you share them? Windows phone 7 has been released and will it be the Android competitor? Show Notes 1. Dave and Lindsey's new record player I recently picked up a new record player from a local Target. I've had records for years and Lindsey recently inherited several classics such as the ‘American Graffiti' soundtrack, The Carpenters, Charlie Parker, and Johnny Cash. I began thinking about how far we have transitioned from vinyls to modern day tech. Steve and I have an open discussion about the past and present of music. 2.Baby Boomers - How Much Do They Spend On Tech? There are many that believe the Baby Boomer generation is not into technology. Well, that is just not the case at all. In fact, spending on technology is one area where boomers are ahead of their younger counterparts. How do they compare in terms of hours spend on the Internet and Smartphone ownership? These stats may surprise some but not the Waves of Tech crew. 3. Online Passwords and Web Security Older and more experiences Web surfers have stronger passwords than the younger generation. Younger demographics are more apt to share passwords with friends and families while the older demographic are more apt to switch up passwords from one site to another. Waves of Tech discusses the issue here! 4. Windows Phone 7 released & Off to Blog World Click the link above for a visual tour of the features of the new Windows 7 phone. Screen shots for IE, Mobile Office, Outlook, and various apps are ready for you! It's looking pretty cool. Finally, Steve is off to Blog World. He will fill us in on next week's podcasts!

Are you going to the Medblog Track at BlogWorld and New Media Expo in Las Vegas this week? If you will be at this October 15th event, I invite you to join us for the show for the unofficial kickoff party to the Medblogger BlogWorldExpo extravaganza!
Can you believe that it's only one week until BlogWorld and New Media Expo? I will be presenting at the Medblog Track. We'll be talking about this and some news stories from the week. And, who knows, maybe a special mystery guest will call into the show?
John and Dave interview Dave Cynkin and Rick Calvert of BlogWorld Expo, and secretly (or perhaps not so!) try to convert Rick to the Mac. After the interview, Dave and John get back to MGG proper form and answer your questions and share your tips. Subscribe today and don't miss […]
