Who do you think about more? Your current audience, listeners that have already found you and love you and consider themselves part of your community or new listeners, someone that might be searching for a certain topic or just something to listen to and they find you and become a part of your audience. As podcasters it can be really easy to get caught up in making content for one of the two. For most of us, I'd say we focus mostly on the community we already have and there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, as a podcast producer I'd say that focusing on your current audience is one of the best things you can do for the stability and success of your podcast. However, and there's always a however lurking around, you have to keep in mind your next listeners. You always need to be carving out a part of your podcast and brand and business that's focused on finding the next audience you'll have, because if you're not getting that new listener another podcast is and they'll be the ones that get the opportunities we're working towards. So in this episode we're going to talk about producing podcast episodes that get shared, even by strangers. Why it's so important that your community and listeners outside of your community are talking about and sharing your podcast, how organic growth will impact your podcast's bottom line and what kind of episodes get shared. ⭐️ Listen to Episode 52: Your Podcast Has a Brand (Whether Your Realize it or Not!)
My guest today is Amy Charlesworth. Amy is a 16-year military veteran and advocate for mental health and healing. After serving all over the world, including a tour in Afghanistan and more, she faced the challenge of transitioning to civilian life, grappling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health struggles. In 2024, she experienced a life-changing healing entheogenic retreat through the non-profit Illuminating Heroes, and now dedicates herself to helping veterans and first responders find similar healing. Based in Los Angeles, Amy is the host of the "QNAMY Show", a YouTube/Podcast exploring mental health, plant medicines, and spiritual awakenings. She holds an MBA, is a speaker, charity board member, and works in the YouTube/Podcast industry. In this episode we discuss mental health, plant medicine, healing and women in the military.IG - https://www.instagram.com/qnamyIlluminating Heroes Fundraiser - https://www.classy.org/fundraiser/5833675QNAMY Podcast - https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/qnamyshow/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@qnamyshowIn this episode you will learn:1. The power of plant medicine as a tool for healing mental health issues.2. How important it is to have women in and the role that women play in the military.3. Why it's so important to be surrounded and have the support of community for those who are transitioning out of the military. “Right now the conversation in our society is always focused specifically on the fact that women shouldn't be in the military because we're fighting in combat. First of all, that's ridiculous. That's absolutely ridiculous, especially like our modern war fighting tactics. We're using drones these days. There's all kinds of equipment that we have, safety equipment.” - 00:03:59“For me, courage now is it's honesty, it's integrity. It's like living by a moral code. It's a compass. It's not being afraid to do the right thing." 00:26:11“I definitely feel like the most important factor, period, about healing is your ability to turn around and help someone else heal. ” 01:00:29
What kinds of questions do you ask your podcast guests? The most engaging podcast episodes—the ones that make for the best conversations and the best listening—are the ones that contain great stories. As the host, you're always aiming to draw all those details and deep disclosures from your guest. So why does getting the full picture sometimes feel like pulling teeth? Mary recently taught her nine-year-old daughter how asking more specific questions will get her the answers she wants, and that conversation prompted this episode's exploration. An open-ended question—the kind that requires a more thorough answer than “yes,” “no,” or some other short word or phrase—is always going to elicit a stronger response. In return, you as the host don't have to work as hard; your guest's fascinating story, the whole reason they're chatting with you, stands a much better chance of tumbling out of them with the passion every podcaster (and podcast listener) is looking for. Ask yourself these impactful interview-question questions: What are the best W5 question prompts to ask in your interview? How can you utilize storytelling statements to deliver more engaging episodes? What should you look for in past episodes to start asking better questions in the future? I guess specifically on your podcast, maybe when you do interviews, how are those questions being asked? I know it's still quite a broad question, but have you ever gone back to your episodes, listen to them again to review how you have been asking questions? And if you want to get even more specific, I'm actually talking about open ended questions versus close ended questions. So today I'm going to explore those types of questions with you and show you how open ended questions can make your interviews and your podcast more enjoyable. Not just for you as a host, but maybe as a guest as well if you're on someone else's show, but more importantly for your listener. This episode actually stemmed from my conversation with my daughter. So, you know, lots of real life experience can come onto the podcast as well. And this idea of what it's like to pull stories from someone by asking them the different types of questions. So, how does your curiosity with these open ended questions play a significant role in your interviews? So there you go. The next generation of podcasters, through my daughter, is already teaching me about something that I can share with you on this very podcast. This is episode number 98 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > MARY: Thank you so much for listening to the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. There's nothing selfish about it.” - 00:08:51“I would say when it was at its worst, my inner critic was like a megaphone of blackness, just like, blaring in my mind. And I was in a perpetual battle to try to push it off, to try to believe in myself, to like, it was just constant. And it was exhausting." 00:17:44“Life is short and precious. The only thing we ever have is this moment. And in this moment, you have as much ability to bring goodness and to feel goodness as you choose. ” 00:47:57

Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: When looking at new podcasts for something to listen to on your podcast player, sometimes one just stands out. For me, it was quite a few years ago when the title But What Do I Know grabbed my attention. It was nominated for a podcast award and it really resonated with me because, the imposter syndrome behind that question, my need for continual learning, and also learning from a fellow Canadian, which was rare at that time. When I saw the show, Canadian podcasts weren't really highlighted as Canadian, but really it was all about that imposter syndrome part. That little girl's uncertainty that I have that still lingers inside of me even as I am a 45 year old woman today. Right. Like all of this stuff comes up, and it came up through that one question, the title of her podcast. So I added But What Do I Know? to my list, even though I didn't listen to it, not in the beginning at least, because I wasn't ready to face my inner struggles with that little girl that I was talking about, right? That struggle of, ooh, I actually have to look at this now. Nah. But I'll still save it on my podcast player because you just never know, right? And then I fast forward to last year, 2024, and the podcast was rebranded and it spoke to me even more. I was like, wait a minute, why did this rebrand happen? What's different? What's going on? And it piqued my curiosity. So I was like, okay, leaning towards the curiosity versus, ooh, do I have to face my inner demons? And that was the change for me. And I decided to hit play because I realized, yeah, what do I know? Because I could learn from Chidinma Azubuike. Chidinma and I chat about her podcasting journey and what success looks like for her now. Because as we know, podcasting is a lot of work. So how does her curiosity and drive to build community work for her podcast today? This is episode number 97 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice.

My guest today is Saril Vasquez. Saril Vásquez, a Certified Functional Nutrition Counselor (CFNC), True Cellular Detox Practitioner (TCDP), and Certified Event Interventionist (CEI), embarked on a personal and professional journey to reverse her hair loss. Born in Manhattan in 1986, Saril was exposed to numerous toxins early in life, leading to the removal of her tonsils at age five. At 24, after discontinuing the birth control patch, she faced a significant challenge as her hair began to fall out, revealing underlying hormonal imbalances. These imbalances—estrogen dominance followed by androgen dominance—were, in Saril's clinical opinion, due to low-grade, consistent inflammation. Understanding that addressing these imbalances alone would not suffice for long-term hair loss reversal, she delved deeper into the cascade of events triggered by these imbalances. Her journey revealed that toxicant-induced loss of tolerance, triggered by mold toxicity, viral exposures, heavy metal exposures, allergens, leaky gut, and microbial imbalances, needed to be addressed to reverse her hair loss naturally. In this episode we discuss hair loss in women, functional nutrition, gut health and epigenetics .Website - https://www.bellechanics.com/IG - https://www.instagram.com/bellechanics/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/saril-vasquez-bellechanics/FB - https://www.facebook.com/Bellechanics/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@bellechanicsIn this episode you will learn:1. The emotional aspects of hair loss.2. The misconceptions about conventional vs. functional nutrition.3. The importance of gut health for hormone production and nutrient absorption. “Deep down inside, I knew that there was an answer. Because it wasn't just hair loss. There were all these other things that were happening in my body.” - 00:05:16“You have more control than you think. You're making choices every day that are either making you better or worse. Everything that you eat, every room that you sleep in, every conversation that you have, every thought that you have, everything that you drink, It all plays a role." 00:33:17“Fear nothing because you are wonderfully and fearfully made and fear is not from God and whatever you do fear will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.” 00:50:51
What does coming back strong from a podcast hiatus look like? In the day-to-day chaos of our lives—balancing work, family, personal time, household upkeep, etc, etc—it's perfectly understandable if it feels like a bit much to plan, record, publish, and market a podcast on top of that. If you're thinking about pressing pause on your show, or you already have, rest assured, you can take that step without derailing your past progress. Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: With all this uncertainty in the world, podcasting is, spoiler alert, not going to be your number one priority in your life. Okay, I know. Maybe it's already on the back burner for you, actually, and you feel this nagging feeling to do something. It's like, oh, I have my podcast. I should put out an episode, or, oh, I want to talk about these things, but, oh, I don't know, how do I have time? It's kind of nagging you. But the overwhelm of everything else in your life either A, doesn't give you the time to record, or B, the mental capacity to say a coherent sentence at this time is truly, truly lacking. So what is it like to take a pause from your podcast and also then come back too, with that intention? How do you restart or maybe reimagine your podcast if you're in a season of overwhelm or busyness? Or you know what, it's been on the back burner for a while and you're like, I want to come back now. So what can you do either to prep for this pause or figuring out what it can look like when you want to come back? This is episode number 96 on the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice.

My guest today is Afarin Bellisario. Afarin Bellisario grew up in Tehran in a family with its feet in the past and its head in the future: whereas her grandmothers could barely read, Afarin's university-educated father and uncles were prominent members of Iran's new technocratic elite. Silenced Whispers is inspired by the women who fought for Iranian democracy and by her upbringing. Upon receiving a Ph.D. (and a subsequent MBA) from MIT, Afarin spent most of her career in the high-tech world, dealing with bleeding-edge innovations. She has worked for firms such as Intel, Analog Devices, and Raytheon, as well as MIT in both technical and business capacities, and consulted many others such as Tokyo Electron. Today, Afarin consults, teaches, and mentors young ventures. But writing has been a passion. Afarin began writing professionally in major publications and the literary magazine Ferdousi at the age of 14, in pre-revolutionary Tehran. In 2013, her essay “Movies with My Aunt” was published in the anthology Love & Pomegranates, edited by M. N. Sayers. The Wall Street Journal and The Boston Globe have published several of her op-eds, and she writes regularly about the clash between tradition and modernity on Medium. Through Afarin's writing, she actively seeks to create a conversation around the themes covered in her book, Silenced Whispers.. In this episode we discuss storytelling, social narratives, mentoring and personal empowerment.Website - https://www.afarin.net/IG - https://www.instagram.com/afarin_bellisario/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/afarin-bellisario-091115/In this episode you will learn:1. The differences between mentoring and consulting.2. How women's voices can be a part of a larger legacy that can inspire future generations.3. The need for women to reclaim their voices in order to help shed societal expectations and step into authentic power. “So for most people, they think that there's a divide. This is all technology. This is all human, soft stuff, soft skills, if you will, writing and culture and things like that. That's not the case.” - 00:03:56“South of Tehran, people were religious. Being religious, not bad, but traditionalists, they wanted their tradition." 00:32:34“We are all the same in heart. The color of skin, the color of the hair, our height, weight, doesn't matter. In the end, we are all the same.” 00:44:00

My guest today is Heather Eck. Heather Eck is a multimedia abstract artist and writer. An intuitive artist and painter, Heather interprets people, places, and experiences through color, a condition known as synesthesia. Like an enormous box of crayons, her gift operates by categorizing through intricate but specific shades of color. While this condition enables her to experience color, she responds to these encounters with people, things, emotions, and spaces by understanding the particular shade of experience that a person dwells in. She uses her gift to detect the most healing color for them to remedy their wounds. Guided by the chakra system and inspired by spirituality and the mysteries of the universe, Heather transforms these vibrant energies into captivating paintings that uplift, inspire and, ultimately, heal. Each canvas becomes a symphony of color and emotion, a visual representation of the unseen connections that weave through our lives. Heather's work is more than art; it's a medium of healing, a testament to the profound influence of color on our well-being. In this episode we discuss synesthesia, art, intuition, healing, self-discovery and spirituality.Website - https://www.heathereck.comIG - https://www.instagram.com/heathereckartistFB - https://www.facebook.com/heathereckartistYouTube - www.youtube.com/@heathereckartist LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/heathereck/Special Show Offer - https://www.heathereck.com/thankyou In this episode you will learn:1. What synesthesia is and how it influences her creative process.2. Why it's important to let go of perfection and how embracing imperfection can lead to authenticity.3. How art can serve as a tool for empowerment and social change in the world. “There are two, I think, definitions of intuitive artists. One is some people, when they're painting a landscape or painting something representational, will plan out what it looks like and be methodical about that approach. Some intuitive artists, though, will approach a canvas without any plan at all and just let their intuition kind of guide them.” - 00:02:49“Synesthesia is kind of the easiest way to define it is when your senses get crossed in your brain. And so if I smell something in my mind, I see it as a color and a shape." 00:34:49“You are all beautiful and wonderful people. Don't let what anybody says about you prevent you from being your most authentic self. You are here to do incredible, wonderful, big things that you cannot even possibly imagine.” 00:49:19

Meditation and journaling should be like, okay, they're easy. Even if you don't do it daily, if you do it three times a week, it's better than not doing it at all." 00:36:46“You just need to do your part but please do your part and you let the other part of the divine universe divine intelligence creator.” 00:54:57

My guest today is Tami Reed. Tami Reed is a mom to two incredible teenage boys, wife to a man who has loved her through all of her growth, and a guardian to three fur babies that have stolen the heart of their home. She is an Idaho native who grew up in a small farming community, called Cambridge. Growing up, she was 1 of 4 girls and “the boy” of the group, yet very shy, sensitive and intuitive. She often felt like she didn't 'belong'. Life felt awkward and at just 14 years of age she was gifted with her first awakening moment, which afforded itself as the beginning of her spiritual journey within. She is a 2002 Biology graduate from Boise State University. In 2004 after her first son was born, she created a successful Home Decor business. For many years she traveled the northwest setting up boutiques at art shows. After her career as a traveling professional artist was forced to an end in 2020, she found herself in another pivotal moment. This experience was another catalyst along her spiritual journey where she found new gifts emerge within herself. Video has taken podcasting by storm, but how do you know if it's right for your show? As a podcaster, how are you interacting with and utilizing video? More and more, we're hearing about creators tacking on this visual element, and platforms like YouTube and Spotify are eagerly showcasing all the success stories of podcasters giving their audience a fresh way to consume content. Sure, it's relatively easy and inexpensive to get your hands on video recording equipment these days, and it's straightforward to drop the final video into platforms like YouTube. But what about editing, and lighting, and additional preparations like your hair, outfit, and background? Video requires a lot of moving parts, and you still have to generate high-quality audio on top of all that. In this episode, Mary breaks down the meteoric rise of video podcasts and encourages you to really ponder how adding video would affect your workflow and your budget. How will video get you closer to your podcasting goals, or is it a timesuck you just don't need? Dig into the pros and cons of tackling this extra format: How easy is it really to “just” add a video component? How do you figure out if your audience even wants to watch your podcast? Just how helpful will AI be for editing and marketing? Transcript with Audio Description: [MUSIC IN - GHOSTHOOD FEATURING SARA AZRIEL “LET'S GO” BEGINS] MARY: Video. It's one of the biggest things that people talk about these days for podcasting, because it feels like video is all the rage in the digital world. For podcasting you see clips of those interviews on social media. You hear of big names creating a studio and filming their podcast. You also see people talking with microphones. Like that visual aspect of a podcast is people with microphones. So the lines of audio first podcasting versus video podcasts are kind of blurring. But are they really? What's driving this need for video? And is it worth it for you as a podcaster to create a video for your podcast? I touched on this a little bit in episode 89, that's the episode on Your Podcasting Questions Answered as my last episode of 2024. But I wanted to bring this topic back up for an entire episode of its own because, like I said, there's so much talk about video these days that I wanted to address it. But like anything in tech, things change quickly. So know that this is recorded in March of 2025, and I may have a new episode in the future for more video talk, because I'm sure this isn't the end of it, and I'm sure that there's a lot more things I want to add, but there's only so much that can go into this short little solo episode. So as of today, I figure, let's talk video podcasts as of right now, and are they right for you and how you can potentially integrate video into your podcasting workflow if you choose to record visuals as well. This is episode number 92 of the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. > MARY: Thank you so much for listening to the Podcaster's Guide to a Visible Voice. My guest today is Sandy Rosenthal. After the near-destruction of New Orleans in 2005 while most were satisfied with the official narrative of "natural disaster", Sandy Rosenthal believed there was more to the story. It turned out there was. Rosenthal led an investigative team via the New Orleans-based group she founded––Levees.org––and discovered the real cause of the devastation: Faulty engineering which resulted in the death of at nearly 1,400 and $200 billion in property damage and business losses, not "Mother Nature." In a classic tale of "first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win", the Levees.org team succeeded not only in exposing the details of the failure, but also uncovering a multi-million dollar smear campaign––against the people of New Orleans, Levees.org and Sandy herself––funded with U.S. taxpayer dollars. By 2015, the news media, which had upheld the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' version of events, finally capitulated, and major news outlets like the Associated Press, New York Times and the BBC, officially changed their version of events to reflect the reality.Rosenthal's book "Words Whispered in Water" which documents this story is her first book. Levees.org exists to make sure the U.S Army Corps of Engineers is held accountable in New Orleans and throughout the U.S. where the lives and property of 201 million Americans depend on the integrity of their levees.. In this episode we discuss Hurricane Katrina, advocacy work, government failures and injustices.Website - https://levees.org/bio-sandy-rosenthal-founder-of-levees-org/IG - https://www.instagram.com/leveesorg/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rosenthalsandy/YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@Sandy_RosenthalSandy's Book - https://www.amazon.com/Words-Whispered-Water-Government-Corruption-ebook/dp/B096GVDD88?ref_=ast_author_mpbIn this episode you will learn:1. Change is possible when you stand up for and fight for what you believe in.2.What the power and impact of truth is.3. The importance of activism and how it can mobilize a community. “We were being blamed. The victims of this horrific flooding, this was no minor disaster. This was a bona fide catastrophe. Nearly 1,400 people died within a few hours.” - 00:04:38“Right after the flooding of New Orleans, I had a lot of reporters and journalists call me or email me and ask me, Okay, talk to me about how the poorer communities, the marginalized communities, talk to me about how their levies weren't as good as the wealthy people." 00:33:25“Don't be afraid. Don't worry that someone might not like what you're saying, because if it's not one person, it'd just be somebody else.” 00:58:23

Curiosity is one of the biggest traits of great personalities. If you want to become a magnetic personality who attracts client to you rather than chasing them, you need to discover how to be more curious. PEOPLE LOVE CURIOSITY One of my best on-air talent had a powerful sense of curiosity. He loved to learn about people and things. He also had a unique view of every situation. His name is Mike, but everyone calls him Big Party. When you think of a guy named Big party, you probably envision a very large, rotund man. This wasn't the case. Party is an average looking guy. He just makes everyone feel special when they are around him. His curiosity leads him to ask great question of everyone he meets. When he conducts an interview, he doesn't have a list of questions. He just asks about the things that pique his curiosity. One day after I left the radio station, the bosses thought it would be better if Big Party talked less and played more music during his show. The ratings dipped. But more importantly, Party hated what he was doing. During his vacation, he decided he was going to quit when he returned. The day came for Party to go back to work, and he changed his mind. But rather than following orders and playing more music, he decided he was going to do his show his way. If they didn't like it, they could fire him. He began leading with his curiosity again. The content became stronger. Listeners started to return. Soon the ratings were back up. And management quit tinkering. Because Party is interested, he becomes interesting. People want to know what he thinks about things and events, because he has an interesting take. Curiosity is powerful. CONTENT FROM CURIOSITY Curiosity will also help you overcome writers block. When you're curious about what's going on in your surroundings, you never get stuck without things to talk about. Be curious about the things that happen around you. Take notes. Jot down the things that catch your attention. Connect those interesting things to powerful stories. Learn to ask questions about everything. Don't be so tied to the script or list of questions. Listen intently, and pivot when necessary. CURIOSITY MAKES YOU SMARTER When you're curious, you'll naturally become more intelligent. You will be amazed at the things you learn when you look for more information. Talk less and listen more. When things happen during your day, ask yourself why. Remember when you were little and you asked why about everything? Why is the sky blue? Why do dogs bury their bones? And why do we sneeze? Be curious about things that happen in your life. Take note of the stories associated with those questions. Curiosity is where most podcasters struggle. It's also why they fail to become influential. Your content won't keep people coming back every episode. Artificial intelligence can copy your content in a heartbeat. They will only come back if they are attracted to you. Curiosity is how you develop your personality. How you become a influential authority. Your curiosity and courage will begin to attract clients to you rather than chasing them everyday. ALSO BE COURAGEOUS Once you start developing your curiosity, have the courage to share those curiosities on your show. Express your real thoughts and feelings. Try new things. When you are curious and courageous, you become more interesting. You become more likable. This week, start taking notes of the interesting things that happen in your day. Then, use some of the most interesting in your episodes. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a coaching call with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.

I grew up in the Mountains of Northern California as the baby of 6 and learned to love the mountains, the trees and being out in nature. I have raised 4 sons; Max, Sam, Zack and Brock in partnership with Mike, my husband of 34 years. I consider the fact that I survived raising 4 boys my greatest accomplishment!
