Datshiane Navanayagam talks to two women whose life changing illnesses led them to set up new businesses after they discovered high street clothes are uncomfortable and difficult to wear when you have restricted mobility or medical needs.Victoria Jenkins is one of the UK's leading adaptive fashion experts. She worked as a freelance garment technologist for fashion labels like Victoria Beckham and Jack Wills before founding the award winning universally designed fashion brand Unhidden. Victoria nearly died from an undiagnosed ulcer in 2012 and spent long periods in hospital where she met many women struggling to find clothes would accommodate their medical conditions. When she realised how hard it was to buy attractive, comfortable and practical garments she decided to design her own.Soumita Basu has an autoimmune disease called psoriatic arthritis which over time has restricted her mobility. As the condition progressed she got used to being constantly in pain but a period when she had to stay in bed proved the catalyst to setting up her clothing brand, Zyenika. The daily routine of being dressed was agonisingly painful – no matter that her mother, who was caring for her at the time, was as gentle as possible. They decided there had to be a better way and set out to design clothes that could be put on in a way that didn't cause so much pain.Produced by Jane Thurlow(Image: (L) Soumita Basu, credit Diganta Gogoi. If someone takes an oath not to eat - a certain amount, or any amount, a small amount would or would not make him liable, depending on whose view. Plus, anything one might uttered, if uttered in that way, can be held in abeyance. Plus, determining the "right" language to use can truly matter. Also, the difference between a false oath and one taken in vein - and how the two versions of the Ten Commandments in the Torah each contains one version. Many women in midlife are doing all the "right" things—eating well, taking supplements, and following protocols—yet they're still not feeling their best. Why? One of the biggest mistakes I see is a lack of patience and persistence in the healing process. In this episode, I break down why true healing takes time and why constantly searching for a "quick fix" can keep you stuck.   What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why healing takes longer than we expect (and why that's normal) How past stress, trauma, and health issues build up over time The dangers of "practitioner hopping" and why switching too soon can slow progress Why there's never just one thing that will fix your health The key habits of women who see real, lasting improvements Your health didn't decline overnight—it took decades of stress, diet choices, and life events to get to this point. True healing requires commitment, patience, and consistency. The women who succeed are the ones who stay the course, even when progress feels slow. If you're ready to commit to deep, lasting change, book a consultation with me HERE. Mentioned in this episode: PIQUE TEA - These are some of Tara's favourite teas! Don't be afraid to take control of your financial life. Stephanie Xenos - Money Muse is a retired rocket scientist turned women's personal finance expert obsessed with helping women reach financial independence. She seeks to empower women of all ages and diverse backgrounds to jumpstart their journey toward financial freedom. Stephanie shares her life story and how she chose to study physics in college, thinking it would lead to high earnings. During her work at SpaceX, she invested significantly in her future Stephanie retired at 32 and decided to help other women achieve financial independence. There is a different perspective on retirement or taking breaks or sabbaticals instead of following a traditional work-retirement path. Leveraging your career to gain financial freedom is not hard. According to Stephanie, there is no need for having a financial advisor but with a bit of learning and time, building portfolios is not hard at all. Stephanie invested for 14 years so she could fully ‘retire'. While she focused intently on living a super-frugal lifestyle in order to heavily invest, she advises against sacrificing pleasures for the sake of investing. In this episode we talk to Oklahoma State Senator Julia Kirt and Oklahoma State Representative Melissa Provenzano about why it is becoming harder and harder for people to engage in politics. Join us as we talk about why people are feeling disenfranchised and divided. How can we better navigate the process, skip the noise, and be more effective in our advocacy efforts? Together, we dissect the urgency of empowering women in politics and how recent shifts like the overturning of Roe v. Wade are reshaping perceptions of governance and personal autonomy. Our dialogue traverses the landscape of political engagement, revealing the potency of personal narratives in bridging divides and the transformative impact that comes from stepping into the political arena.About Guest SpeakersSenator Julia Kirt was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in 2018 representing District 30 in northwest Oklahoma City. She is an experienced community leader who has led statewide arts and culture nonprofit organizations for 20 years. As a mom of two, Senator Kirt knows first-hand the value of the investments we make in public education and in an economy that provides opportunity for all families. Senator Kirt currently serves as a Co-Chair for the Mental Health Caucus. Her committee work is largely focused on the state's finances and the rules by which our government operates, which allows her to work for an Oklahoma built on fairness, where each person and community has what they need to thrive.Representative Melissa Provenzano is a lifelong Tulsa area native, married mom to two and stepmom to two. Elected in 2018 to represent District 79 in Tulsa, she worked as a public school teacher and principal who grew exasperated with cutting her budget every single year until she decided to run. As a legislator, Melissa continues to bring this same commitment and voice, focusing on  common sense education policy and for the needs of families of Tulsa at the state capitol. She currently services as the Assistant Minority Leader for the Democratic Caucus, State Director for Women In Government (National), and co-chair of the Mental Health Caucus.  She was recently named one of Journal Record's 50 Women Making a Difference and is most proud of her work increasing access to diagnostic mammograms, student loan transparency, getting rid of the state grocery tax and separating occupational licensure renewals from tax status. If you enjoyed the episode share it with a friend and don't forget to leave us a review. In this Moxie by Proxy episode, we discuss the moxie of the women of Iceland through the camera lens of Pamela Hogan, Emmy award-winning filmmaker, journalist, and media executive. In her latest documentary, The Day Iceland Stood Still, Pamela and her collaborator acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, take us back to October 24, 1975, and the months leading up to that historic moment when 90 percent of Iceland's women took the “day off,” bringing the country to a standstill and catapulting Iceland to the world's superpower of gender equality. The story comes to life through interviews with the unstoppable women who planned and lived that day, interwoven with playful animation and evocative archival footage. Seven years in the making, the documentary is evidence of Pamela's filmmaking moxie and her belief in a riveting story. The film's release in 2024 celebrates the 50th anniversary of that day. Pamela describes the joy, grit, and determination of a diverse group of women as they sought to change the status quo, open up career opportunities, and promote wage parity. It's a fascinating examination of compromise, unifying messaging around social change, and grassroots organization. Ultimately, it's a story of how ordinary women managed to do the extraordinary.Pamela also describes the roots of her moxie in being raised by a single mother who was deeply involved in the women's equal rights movement in the 1970s United States. She is drawn to stories of women, stories that are fascinating and often overlooked. It is like whether a tree falling in the forest with no one around makes a sound; she believes if no one tells a person's story, it doesn't exist.Pamela's body of work includes Looks Like Laury Sounds Like Laury, Women, War & Peace series and its kick-off episode, I Came to Testify, and Wide Angle series on PBS. At Wide Angle, she was the Executive Producer working with global filmmakers on 70 hours of character-driven documentaries illuminating under-reported stories. While there, she developed Ladies First, an Emmy-award-winning film about women's leadership in post-genocide Rwanda, and Time for School, a longitudinal series that followed seven children in seven countries fighting the odds for a basic education.Pamela is recognized with the National Council for Research on Women Making a Difference for Women award. She is an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism and on the board of the International Center for Transitional Justice. This episode of Main Street Moxie is proudly sponsored by Elyse Harney Real Estate and Meadowscapes. ResourcesFork FilmsThe Day Iceland Stood StillWomen's Day Off - Main Street MagazineSupport the show

New Thinking: Rediscovering women making film and sculpture

Over 200 women sculptors have been uncovered in the research of Sophie Johnson from Bristol University. She describes some of their creations and discusses the challenges of working with the incomplete personal archives of these artists – including Mrs Goldsmith, Patience Wright, and Catherine Andras, who created wax portrait miniatures and effigies, and Anne Seymour Damer, who carved in marble. Kathleen Collins died in her 40s and left un-filmed screenplays and unpublished stories which Alix Beeston from Cardiff University has been researching. Collins' finished film Losing Ground didn't get a theatrical release when it was made in 1982 but it was restored and reissued in 2015. Now her work is finding a new audience. But how should we approach her unfinished works? Joan Passey hosts the conversation. Producer in Cardiff: Fay Lomas Dr Joan Passey teaches English at Bristol University and is a New Generation Thinker working with the BBC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council to share research on radio. Sophie Johnson is a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol researching eighteenth century European women sculptors. Her research focuses on women wax modellers and their entrepreneurship. Links to her articles are available at https://research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/persons/sophie-johnson Dr Alix Beeston is a feminist writer and academic based at Cardiff University. Her most recent book is Incomplete: The Feminist Possibilities of the Unfinished Film. More details of her work are available at https://alixbeeston.com/ With special thanks to Michael Minard, who provided the song ‘It Might Be' – written by Minard and Kathleen Collins, performed by Jenny Burton, intended for use in an unfinished film project by Collins – which we hear in the podcast. This New Thinking episode of the Arts and Ideas podcast was made in partnership with the AHRC, part of UKRI. You can find more conversations about new research available on the website of Radio 3's Free Thinking programme and another collection exploring Women in the World all available as the Arts & Ideas podcast.
