Sermons from First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington Massachusetts
Rev. Hank Peirce, Guest Minister, preaching Worship service given December 1, 2024 Prayer by Loren Gomez, Worship Associate https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 Plato's description of the cave illustrates the philosophical roots of our Unitarian Universalist theology. Yet our theology and the way we see the world is changing, what will influence the way we understand our world and our future? What will help us have a new vision of ourselves and the sacred as we move forward? About Rev. Hank Peirce: Rev. Hank Peirce is of old Swamp Yankee stock, whose family has belonged to our churches for centuries. He has served UU churches in Maine and Massachusetts including 12 years in Medford, where he and his family still live. Offering and Giving First The Giving First program donates 50% of the non-pledge offering each month to a charitable organization that we feel is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles. The program began in November 2009, and First Parish has donated over $200,000 to more than 70 organizations. This Sunday half of the offering supports Resource Organizing Project. Resource Organizing Project builds stronger movements for justice and liberation in New England with racial, economic, environmental, and gender justice partners. They offer affordable and high quality services, practices, spaces, and pathways that support both interdependence and self-reliance for community self-determination. ROP is endorsed by Episcopal Dioceses and by the Reparations Interfaith Coalition. The remaining half of your offering supports the life and work of this Parish. To donate using your smartphone, you may text “fpuu” to 73256. Then follow the directions in the texts you receive. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.
What is the significance of a footstool in the Bible? What does a footstool represent/symbolize in the Bible?
An episode from THE BIBLE Baptist Church, a Bible believing, Bible preaching church in DeLand, Florida. What THE BIBLE Baptist Church (TBBC) Believes: “A church is not a social organization or a club. It is a gathering of men and women who have put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. These people meet together to worship the Lord, to praise Him, to encourage one another to live lives pleasing to the Savior and to be instructed in the truths of the Holy Bible. It is also a place from which these believers go forth, individually and in groups, to spread the gospel of Christ Jesus to men and women the world over. The extent to which the blessing of the Lord abides upon a church and the effectiveness of a church in the aforementioned areas depends upon its understanding of and obedience to the words of God. There are certainly clearly stated truths found in scripture to which all believers must steadfastly adhere. A collection of individuals, each living in accord with their opinions or religious notions, can accomplish little for Christ. A gathering of men and women who have a like-minded faith in a foundational set of Biblical truths can do great things for the Lord. Below are those truths upon which we have built THE BIBLE Baptist Church. Should you have other questions please feel free to ask. Our people and leaders are available and more than happy to let you know what we do and why. It is our hope and prayer that the Lord will direct you to become a vital part of the gospel work which He has given us to do.” You may write to THE BIBLE Baptist Church at: 872 Glenwood Rd. Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? We remember that the author was laying down the foundation for trusting in and relying on Jesus Christ and the new covenant He inaugurated. The old was given through the agency of the angels, but the new is given through the agency of the Son, who is greater and more excellent. Our verse today is a question, and the answer is obvious. God hasn't said to any angel to take a seat at His right hand until I subdue all your enemies. He has only said that to Jesus, His Son. Here's the encouragement I draw from this verse. Every enemy to my loving as Jesus loves will be subdued eventually. There will be a day when Jesus will have the total victory over every one of His enemies. His enemies are our enemies. We are also encouraged by the fact that God is for Him. It is God who will “make” His enemies a footstool for His feet. If God is for Him, who can be against Him? No one! The same is true for us. God is for us! Who can be against us? No one. Romans 8:32. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” This was the apostle Paul's foundation for rejoicing in God's inseparable and all-victorious love. Because He loves us and is for us, every enemy that could separate us and destroy our relationship with Him is His enemy also. That's the love we have indwelling in our hearts. So that's the love we have in us and is the same love with which we can love one another. One of the greatest enemies of our relationship with Christ is our own sin. Jesus has conquered it by His love. One of the greatest enemies in any relationship we have is the other person's sins. Shall we let their sins have the victory? No! Never! Through the power of the cross and the indwelling love of Christ, we forgive, confront, communicate, overcome, and make those sins a footstool for His feet. In so doing, God fulfills what He promised to Jesus, “I make your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

église AB Lausanne ; KJV Psalms 110 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head. ...

Hebrews 1-13 quotes from Psalm 110. This lesson covers that Psalm which is one of the most quoted in the New Testament.
Hebrews 1:8-14 8 Of the Son [God] says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness beyond Your companions.” 10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; 11 they will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12 like a robe You will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.” 13 And to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? Key Words: Throne, Forever, Scepter, Footstool, Ministering Keystone Verse: verse: Your throne O God is forever and ever. (Hebrews 1:8) Download Bulletin

Psalm 99 (ALV)Andrew and Edwin notice the parallels between Psalm 99:5 and 99:9--specifically noting the parallel of God's footstool and God's holy hill. John 19:17 “They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha.” Let's consider God's word in Is. 66:1. “Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.” In Nov of 1997 I remember looking up at what was thought to be Golgotha. The hillside seemed to have the image of a face of a skull. I could imagine three crosses with men hanging on them. In light of Isaiah's revelation, I can imagine the Father in heaven on His throne looking down at His feet where Jesus, the Lamb of atonement, is being sacrificed so God can passover our sins. He sees the blood of His Son flowing down the cross and covering all who are bowed at His footstool. Their sins vanish. The curse lifted. The veil between heaven and earth opens above them, and the love of God, like a tsunami, cascades from the throne over His Son and inundates the beloved. It carries them into the world, filled with His love. Were you there? Acknowledgment: Music from “Carried by the Father” by Eric Terlizzi. www.ericterlizzi.com
This is a devotional taken from "Daily Devotions from the Psalms" written by Rev. John A. Heys, and published by the Reformed Book Outlet in Hudsonville, Michigan. Rev. Heys studied in the Protestant Reformed Seminary under the instruction of Herman Hoeksema and George M. Ophoff. He was ordained to the ministry of the Word, and installed as pastor, in Hope Protestant Reformed Church in Walker, Michigan in 1941. He served consecutively, and under the blessing of God effectively, three other Protestant Reformed churches, till his emeritation in 1980. In his 'retirement' he continued to be of service to the churches, and evidence of which is this set of daily devotions, one for each day of the year, published originally some 25 years ago by the Men's Society of Hudsonville (MI) Protestant Reformed Church, and reprinted here for the spiritual benefit of readers old and new. Scripture passages quoted by Rev. Heys are from the King James Version of the Bible, and the versification of the Psalms to which he refers are from the 1912 edition of the Psalter. May these brief meditations of Rev. Heys serve for the edification of the reader, as they also deepen his appreciation for the psalms-those "immortal songs of the Holy Spirit, those matchless hymns of the Bible which...with their measured language of religious feeling and devotion will abide until the end" (preface to the 1912 Psalter).
