Mighty Orion the hunter has a mighty resting spot for his tired feet: Cursa, the second-brightest star of Eridanus, the river. The star’s name comes from a longer Arabic phrase meaning “footstool of the central one” – Orion himself. As night falls, the star stands above Orion’s foot: Rigel, the hunter’s brightest star. Cursa is about 90 light-years away. It’s easy to see from that distance because it’s a giant. It’s several times the size and mass of the Sun, and 45 times the Sun’s brightness. Its classification as a “giant” tells us much more than just its size, though. It also tells us about its stage in life. A giant star has puffed up as a result of changes deep in its heart. It’s burned through the hydrogen in its core to make helium, so it’s moved into a new phase. In the case of Cursa, it’s fusing hydrogen in a thin shell around the core. The shell is quite hot, so it produces a lot of radiation. That pushes on the surrounding layers of gas, causing the star to expand. And that makes it brighter. Today, the surface of Cursa is thousands of degrees hotter than the Sun’s. At that temperature, the star shines almost pure white. As it continues to change, though, Cursa may get even bigger and brighter. But its surface will get cooler. So a bigger Cursa will shine redder – an angry-looking footstool for the hunter. Tomorrow: from giant to supergiant. Script by Damond Benningfield
Fear is not from God — and it was never meant to control your life.In this GUTS Church Sunday service, Pastor Bill Scheer delivers a powerful, Scripture-filled message on defeating fear, anxiety, and depression by renewing the mind and standing on God's Word. Teaching through practical steps and biblical truth, this message reveals how fear takes control, how faith breaks it, and why the believer is called to live from peace, confidence, and authority.Drawing from Psalm 23 and John 10, this service unpacks the role of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and the promise that nothing can snatch believers from the Father's hand. Through worship, teaching, and a strong healing and faith activation moment, this message calls people to go on the offensive against fear and walk in the victory Jesus already secured.GUTS Church exists to help people win — in faith, family, health, and purpose.SubscribeConnect With UsCHAPTERS:00:00 — Welcome + Setting the Direction for the Service05:06 — Fear, Anxiety, and the Battle of the Mind10:15 — Replacing Fear With Faith (Not Denial)15:22 — Trusting God Through Obedience20:00 — Psalm 23: The Shepherd's Peace and Protection25:00 — John 10: Nothing Can Snatch You Away30:42 — Prayer for Healing, Families, and Freedom36:03 — Closing Prayer & Dismissal

This is message 63 in the Isaiah series. The Earth is My Footstool Isaiah 66:1-24 God declares His greatness and sovereignty by reminding us that He cannot be contained by temples or human traditions. True worship begins with a humble heart that trembles at His Word. Isaiah's final message reveals a God who will judge false religion, restore His people, establish His Kingdom, and make His glory known to all nations. His plan will not fail. The Messiah has come, He will reign, and every nation will see His power. Sermons from First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Arlington Massachusetts
Rev. Hank Peirce, Guest Minister, preaching Worship service given December 1, 2024 Prayer by Loren Gomez, Worship Associate https://firstparish.info/ First Parish A liberal religious community, welcoming to all First gathered 1739 Plato's description of the cave illustrates the philosophical roots of our Unitarian Universalist theology. Yet our theology and the way we see the world is changing, what will influence the way we understand our world and our future? What will help us have a new vision of ourselves and the sacred as we move forward? About Rev. Hank Peirce: Rev. Hank Peirce is of old Swamp Yankee stock, whose family has belonged to our churches for centuries. He has served UU churches in Maine and Massachusetts including 12 years in Medford, where he and his family still live. Offering and Giving First The Giving First program donates 50% of the non-pledge offering each month to a charitable organization that we feel is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles. The program began in November 2009, and First Parish has donated over $200,000 to more than 70 organizations. This Sunday half of the offering supports Resource Organizing Project. Resource Organizing Project builds stronger movements for justice and liberation in New England with racial, economic, environmental, and gender justice partners. They offer affordable and high quality services, practices, spaces, and pathways that support both interdependence and self-reliance for community self-determination. ROP is endorsed by Episcopal Dioceses and by the Reparations Interfaith Coalition. The remaining half of your offering supports the life and work of this Parish. To donate using your smartphone, you may text “fpuu” to 73256. Then follow the directions in the texts you receive. About our Lead Minister: Rev. Marta Flanagan began her ministry as our twentieth called minister at First Parish in the fall of 2009. She is a genuine and forthright preacher. In conversation she is direct and engaging. She speaks of prayer with as much ease as she laughs at human foibles. We call her “Marta.” Marta is a religious liberal, a theist, a feminist, and a lover of the woods. As a student of American history at Smith College she was captivated by the stories of social reformers who were motivated and sustained by their faith. That led her to consider the ministry and to study at Harvard Divinity School from where she was graduated in 1986. She was the first woman minister in the city of Salem, Massachusetts, serving at the First Universalist Church there (1987-1997). She served in a co-ministry at South Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, (1997-2005) from where she is minister emerita. Marta served as interim minister in Montpelier, Vermont (2008-2009). She is trained as a spiritual director. For three years she lived in the Vermont woods practicing voluntary simplicity and the spiritual life. Marta enjoys the vitality of First Parish and our strong sense of community. She celebrates the yearning for depth and the desire to make a difference in the world that she finds here.

Hebrews 1:13 But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? We remember that the author was laying down the foundation for trusting in and relying on Jesus Christ and the new covenant He inaugurated. The old was given through the agency of the angels, but the new is given through the agency of the Son, who is greater and more excellent. Our verse today is a question, and the answer is obvious. God hasn't said to any angel to take a seat at His right hand until I subdue all your enemies. He has only said that to Jesus, His Son. Here's the encouragement I draw from this verse. Every enemy to my loving as Jesus loves will be subdued eventually. There will be a day when Jesus will have the total victory over every one of His enemies. His enemies are our enemies. We are also encouraged by the fact that God is for Him. It is God who will “make” His enemies a footstool for His feet. If God is for Him, who can be against Him? No one! The same is true for us. God is for us! Who can be against us? No one. Romans 8:32. “He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” This was the apostle Paul's foundation for rejoicing in God's inseparable and all-victorious love. Because He loves us and is for us, every enemy that could separate us and destroy our relationship with Him is His enemy also. That's the love we have indwelling in our hearts. So that's the love we have in us and is the same love with which we can love one another. One of the greatest enemies of our relationship with Christ is our own sin. Jesus has conquered it by His love. One of the greatest enemies in any relationship we have is the other person's sins. Shall we let their sins have the victory? No! Never! Through the power of the cross and the indwelling love of Christ, we forgive, confront, communicate, overcome, and make those sins a footstool for His feet. In so doing, God fulfills what He promised to Jesus, “I make your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

Hebrews 1-13 quotes from Psalm 110. This lesson covers that Psalm which is one of the most quoted in the New Testament.
Hebrews 1:8-14 8 Of the Son [God] says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness beyond Your companions.” 10 And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of Your hands; 11 they will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment, 12 like a robe You will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But You are the same, and Your years will have no end.” 13 And to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? This is a devotional taken from "Daily Devotions from the Psalms" written by Rev. John A. Heys, and published by the Reformed Book Outlet in Hudsonville, Michigan. Rev. Heys studied in the Protestant Reformed Seminary under the instruction of Herman Hoeksema and George M. Ophoff. He was ordained to the ministry of the Word, and installed as pastor, in Hope Protestant Reformed Church in Walker, Michigan in 1941. He served consecutively, and under the blessing of God effectively, three other Protestant Reformed churches, till his emeritation in 1980. In his 'retirement' he continued to be of service to the churches, and evidence of which is this set of daily devotions, one for each day of the year, published originally some 25 years ago by the Men's Society of Hudsonville (MI) Protestant Reformed Church, and reprinted here for the spiritual benefit of readers old and new. Scripture passages quoted by Rev. Heys are from the King James Version of the Bible, and the versification of the Psalms to which he refers are from the 1912 edition of the Psalter. May these brief meditations of Rev. Heys serve for the edification of the reader, as they also deepen his appreciation for the psalms-those "immortal songs of the Holy Spirit, those matchless hymns of the Bible which...with their measured language of religious feeling and devotion will abide until the end" (preface to the 1912 Psalter).
