In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we kicked things off with our usual rundown of the latest admissions news. We are still seeing some activity around wait lists at few MBA programs. We then discussed the delayed roll-out of the Harvard MBA admissions essay for this upcoming season. It looks like HBS is planning to change their more traditional essay prompt, and there appears to be much anticipation about this change. All will be unveiled later this month... Graham highlighted the upcoming summer application essay series that Clear Admit hosts, which begins on Wednesday, July 10, and will include the majority of the top MBA programs. Signups have recently opened and are here: https://www.bit.ly/summeressays Graham then noted the publication of a new podcast episode which is a recording of one of the panel discussions during the in-person Chicago MBA admissions event that Clear Admit hosted. This discussion centered on answering several key questions about the MBA degree; who is it for, when should one pursue it, why, what's the ROI, etc. The show features admissions directors from Cornell / Johnson, Harvard, NYU / Stern and Michigan / Ross, with Graham moderating. Graham then highlighted a recently published Clear Admit admissions tip, which focuses the importance of the campus environment; this led to a discussion about the Penn campus in Philadelphia. Graham then noted the publication of Clear Admit's first Adcom Q&A for this new season, from Ohio State/Fisher. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from India, and is reapplying next season, after gaining admissions this season for USC / Marshall and CMU / Tepper. They have a strong blend of tech and entrepreneurial experience, as well as decent additional activities. They have a very good GMAT, but their GPA is the weak spot. This week's second MBA candidate is a military candidate with a 700 GMAT score and a 3.15 GPA. They are not being overly ambitious with their target programs. They plan to retake the GMAT this summer, as well as take some additional coursework to bolster their profile. The final MBA candidate for this week is also from the military, this time on the nuclear engineering side for the Navy. They have a strong GMAT of 740, and while their GPA is a little modest, they played Division 1 Baseball as an undergraduate. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

For most applicants, their worst case scenario is a cycle that does not result in an acceptance. It is hard to experience a "failed" application. It can feel dehumanizing, like you aren't a good applicant, or that you won't ever get an acceptance. However, there is power in learning what went wrong and taking the steps to improve yourself and what you can offer to a health professions program. This episode overviews what students who haven't not had a positive result in their cycle to consider to improve their overall application. Reapplicants can be some of the strongest applicants in the cycle. Today we talk to a student who was accepted during the last cycle and will start her PA Program literally as this airs. She is a non-traditional student and reapplicant who, after not gaining admission during the previous cycle, contacted us for her entire application process. She didn't have the traditional hours a typical applicant would have but we worked hard to make sure she stood out with her personal statement and later, when she received interviews, to make sure she stood out there as well. If you need help trying to figure out how you can be a competitive candidate this cycle, or even if you are thinking about applying in the next cycle, contact us at PA Mentor and see how we can also help you successfully get into a PA Program.
Divya contacted us more than a year ago after not gaining admission during her first application cycle. We reviewed her previous CASPA application and found areas where she could improve upon and created a list of things to do in order to be more competitive. We worked with Divya on her Personal Statement and when the time came, we helped prepare her with Mock Interviews. Although Divya was waitlisted this cycle, just days before the program started, she came off the waitlist and she is a current student at the George Fox University PA Program. If you weren't accepted previously or you just want to know how you can be a more competitive candidate, contact us for a Free Consultation. Michael was rejected 4x before he was finally accepted to medical school. What was he doing wrong and what did he change that finally got him accepted?
HOW TO GO FROM REAPPLICANT TO CHIEF RESIDENT When Dr. Andre Morgan graduated from Howard University's internal medicine residency program earlier this year, he was also inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society. AOA inductees are chosen for the honor because they have displayed a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service. It's a great honor in and of itself,, but it was the icing on the cake, considering that Dr. Morgan was also a Chief Resident of his program. However, Dr. Morgan's life over the last decade hasn't been exclusively filled with lofty roles and selective awards. Rewind a few years and you'll find a younger Dr. Morgan, determined not to give up on his goal of matching into residency in the United States, because he didn't match after his first or second attempt. How did Dr. Morgan go from being a 3-time match applicant to being a chief resident of his dream program? We get into that and much more in the Season 1 finale of The IMG Residency Match Podcast. - This episode is for you if you want to learn about: - The role that mentors played in Dr. Morgan's career choice - Why young Andre didn't realize that he could be a doctor - Where Dr. Morgan began his medical journey, and some of the countries he has worked in - His most memorable patient experience (it's a heme-onc tearjerker) - Why he pulled out of his local residency program in Internal-Medicine and decided to apply to the NRMP match - The mindset you must possess once you start thinking about applying to the match - The social pressure that comes with not matching (you know, while all your classmates are moving on with their careers) - The one piece of advice someone gave Dr. Morgan that encouraged him to apply a third time to the match - How you can know when to give up on your match dreams if you're an IMG who has applied multiple times - What needs to change every time you apply to the match - Dr. Morgan's experience interviewing at his dream program the year he matched - What it's like to be a chief resident ________________________________________________________________ Thank you so much for tuning in to Season 1. Zach Donato, who will be starting medical school later this year, reflects on his application experience and his expectations for med school [Show summary] Zach Donato, who is preparing to start medical school, shares his perspective on getting accepted as a reapplicant, staying on top of the application process, and mentally preparing for med school. An accepted incoming medical student shares why, in admissions, "the straight path is not always the best one." [Show notes] Zachary Donato is happily anticipating the start of medical school. He graduated from Emory University in 2018 with a major in neuroscience and behavioral biology. He is currently pursuing a masters in biomedical science from the University of Miami, and this summer, he will start medical school. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background? [1:56] I was born in a small town in Virginia called Roanoke. I lived there until I was about five, then we ended up moving to Denver, Colorado. So I was raised very outdoorsy. I was hiking all the time, biking, running, you name it—outdoor activity, I probably tried it. So I grew up in Colorado. Then I went to Emory undergrad, like you said, and pursued my degree in neuroscience there. How did you decide to pursue a career in medicine? [2:30] The main thing was during my high school career, my AP biology class. So kind of up until that point I was all over the place. I was taking business classes and just trying to envision myself doing different things. I would say my teacher, my AP biology teacher, really inspired me and ignited a passion for me to pursue a scientific career. Nothing got me as excited as when I was doing the labs in biology or learning new concepts. It felt like nothing I’ve ever felt before. So I knew I wanted a career in the sciences and that kind of led me down the path of, “Okay, maybe medicine is something I should consider.” How about clinical medicine? Where did you get the appetite for that? [3:16] That next summer, I ended up volunteering in the post-anesthesia recovery unit at a hospital in Denver. I think as I started kind of getting familiar with patient care and listening to patients’ stories, that really excited me in a way that I was intrigued with. I realized that I could do a lot of little things to make a patient’s experience much better. I kind of wanted to keep doing that, so I kept exploring the medical field. Your 2019/2020 application wasn’t your first medical school application—you applied for 2018/2019 first. What do you think contributed to your rejection the first time around? [4:02] I think one of the things that applicants really struggle with is getting the whole picture together, right? So you have your letters of rec, you have your personal statement, you have your activities, but how can you put that into one really nice picture of yourself? So I think first of all, my letters of rec, I kind of rushed to get them. A lot of times students struggle getting close to people, especially with undergrad. You have so many people in your classes. I really struggled doing that. I think my personal statement really didn't reflect who I was and my journey. I told a lot of nice things, but it wasn't about my story. I think that's really where I struggled the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uckHryN-L4 What do you think you did differently the second time that made the difference? [4:44] Preparation. You have to be ready for everything the day that AMCAS application comes out. I submitted on the first day. Getting the personal statement to be my story, and then having the activities backing up what I say about my story. Then getting close with the faculty at UM, really developing those relationships, and doing a lot to show my commitment to the medical field. What was the idea behind pursuing a masters as a postbac? [5:18] I kind of needed to reinvent myself a little bit. In college, I struggled.

Session 32 Your questions, answered here on the OldPreMeds Podcast are taken directly from the forums over at OldPreMeds.org where they pull a question and deliver the answers right on to you. Today's question is about preparing for the medical school interview being a nontraditional student. Ryan lays out some relevant pieces of advice to help students rock the interview come interview day. OldPreMeds Question of the Week: Poster is a nontraditional re-applicant who applied very late in the cycle and had a mediocre MCAT score, being her two biggest hurdles. Since then she has worked to improve on several areas of her application and applied early in this year's cycle. She chose to apply to 12 schools and received an interview to interview at a school in August. How do you prepare for interviews particularly for nontraditional students? Here are the insights from Ryan: Know who you are. Know what your future is going to look like. Check out Episodes 192, 19, and 91 of The Premed Years Podcast to get more tips about the medical school interview process. Diversity is key. What does your nontraditional background bring to your classmates and add to the diversity of the class? Diversity is a huge buzzword these days with holistic admissions processes at medical schools. But you have to be able to tell that story as to why you're diverse. Do a mock interview. Talk with somebody who knows the process. Record yourself (audio or video) to see and hear yourself. Make it as real as possible and go through it so you can watch yourself. Get feedback from the person you're talking with on the answers you gave to see how it sounded like to the interviewer. Session 31 In this episode, Ryan focuses on the medical school interview process, an important topic to discuss considering that it's interview season and Ryan has a book coming up on Kindle. Find out more about it on www.medschoolinterviewbook.com and sign up to get notified when it releases. This book will also hit physical bookstores by the first part of next year. Ryan pulls a statement from the forums over at OldPreMeds.org and he discusses how critical preparing for an interview is. OldPreMeds Question of the Week: Poster got an interview feedback from one of the schools they applied to last year. The school quoted the committee stating that they felt the interviewee was extremely nervous, talking very rapidly, so rapidly that they often could not understand what was said. The committee felt as though the interviewee came across as closed-minded and lacking of self-awareness due to a combination of the choice of words and phrases used during the interview as well as the inability to fully answer some questions. Some comments were not received favorably by the committee and viewed as very disrespectful. Poster is at a loss as to how to correct this. Here are the insights from Ryan: This is what happens if you don't prepare properly for your interviews. Mock interviews are very, very important to understand how the words floating around your head come out of your mouth and land on the interviewer. It's your job to make sure the words you're saying land favorably on the interviewer. You can't control everybody listening to you to agree with you but if you're saying stuff that are very off-putting then you're obviously doing something wrong. As you prepare for your interviews, record yourself with a video camera or an audio recorder. Have somebody go through the interview process with you. If you need a list of questions, check out www.medschoolinterviewbook.com to sign up and get notified when the book is released. It contains almost 600 possible questions as well as questions you can throw at your interviewers. The book also has over 50 real answer from mock interviews Ryan has done with students including the feedback he gave to students. Session 28 Ryan and Rich again shed light on your questions directly from the forums over at OldPreMeds.org. This week they particularly talk about the importance of writing your extracurriculars and meaningful statements well. It can't just be a job description but it should show how you are as a person. OldPreMeds Question of the Week: A question coming from a reapplicant asking about redoing the extracurriculars. Do they need to rewrite their extracurriculars and the most meaningful essays they're selecting for their three big extracurriculars? Here are the insights from Ryan & Rich: Things to consider: How extensive have you been? Has anything been changed and updated? You may get by without extensively rewriting your extracurriculars and meaningful statements for the most of the secondary applications. So it's not bad to continue with what you've had. But if you've reapplied to schools before with the same information and it hasn't worked then consider what you're being effective. Have someone who does not know you well critically analyze your writing prior to getting into another application cycle as this somehow mimics the members of the admissions committee that don't know you at all. Student really spend time on the personal statement and the first two secondaries. But people overlook the extracurriculars, which need to be well-written. They should be: Concise Coherent Compelling Short paragraphs Your extracurricular statement must show you as a person. Characteristics Intelligence Motivation Commitment Attention to detail Major takeaway from this episode: Be sincere about your motivation and your story.
