In this episode, we dive into the incredible journey of Tinashe and Tinotendo, twin brothers born conjoined in late 2004 in Zimbabwe. Their story took a remarkable turn when, through the efforts of Ve'ahavta, a Canadian Jewish humanitarian organization, The Salvation Army, Dr. Michael Silverman and Dr. Rachel Spitzer, the conjoined babies were brought to Toronto, Canada and underwent a successful five-hour surgery at SickKids Hospital, where they were separated and given the chance to live independent lives. Now, at twenty years old, Tinashe and Tinotendo sit down with us to hear about their experiences for the first time, and talk about their bond, and the challenges and triumphs that have shaped their lives since that transformative surgery. This is a conversation about resilience, hope, and the incredible power of medical innovation and human compassion. Tinashe and Tinotendo do not speak English, so Padrina Thistle, a nurse and wife of Dr. Paul Thistle, translated, beautifully.

Send us a Text Message. On this episode of the CMAJ Podcast, Dr. Blair Bigham and Dr. Mojola Omole address the increasingly urgent issue of adolescent vaping. Rates of use of e-cigarettes containing nicotine by youth in Canada continue to be among the highest in the world. They speak with Dr. Madelynn Hannah, a clinical pharmacist, and Dr. Trisha Tulloch, a pediatrician specializing in adolescent and addiction medicine at CAMH and SickKids Hospital in Toronto. Both co-authors of the CMAJ article "E-cigarette use in adolescents.” Dr. Madelynn Hannah provides critical insights into the stark differences between nicotine exposure from vaping versus traditional cigarettes, highlighting the unexpectedly high nicotine concentrations found in many vaping products. She also shares her clinical experiences managing adolescents in nicotine withdrawal and the practical challenges of using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Dr. Tulloch discusses the broader physiological impacts of nicotine on adolescents, including cardiovascular issues and the potential for seizures. She emphasizes the need for behavioral interventions and technological tools, such as mobile apps, to aid in vaping cessation. Dr. Tulloch also highlights the critical role of parental involvement in supporting youth through their journey to quit vaping. The conversation covers recent regulatory efforts, including Ontario's ban on vaping in schools, and calls for stronger enforcement and possible bans to protect young people. The guests argue for more stringent measures and better education to mitigate the health risks of vaping among adolescents.Throughout the episode, the guests underscore the urgent and serious nature of adolescent vaping, and the need for immediate action. They advocate for a multifaceted approach that combines policy responses, such as increased taxation with comprehensive education for parents and young people about the dangerous and addictive nature of vaping. For more information from our sponsor, go to medicuspensionplan.comJoin us as we explore medical solutions that address the urgent need to change healthcare. Before he was even born, baby Rowan Thomas had to fight for his life. Rowan was born with a rare condition: Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. It affects 1 in every 33-hundred births in Canada. Rowan was born on January 30th, and since then, he's had to endure surgery, a feeding tube, and more pokes and prods than most adults face in a lifetime. He's now four months old, and is finally able to come home from Toronto to meet his family. Mary Rankin is Rowan's grandmother, and she joined us on the line today from Coley's Point.
He entered the real estate industry in 1989 and has since gained extensive knowledge in residential sales, commercial ventures, and land assembly projects. Join André, The Impulsive Thinker, in this insightful episode, as he sits down with Dr. Umesh Jain to unlock the complex relationship between ADHD, impulsivity, trust, and success in both business and personal realms. In a candid dialogue, they explore the critical role of finding compatible partners in life's pursuits and the dynamic between adult ADHD and the drive in entrepreneurship. They dive into the gripping topic of Internet addiction, drawing parallels to the high stakes of gambling, and impart wisdom on managing the rush of the “go signal” that so often derails the impulsive mind. Key Points Covered: - The influences of adult ADHD on business success and the search for the right partnership. - The close ties between broadband width, addiction rates, and the thrill-seeking behaviors seen in entrepreneurship and gambling. - Strategies to control impulsivity, including minimizing triggers and strengthening the ability to say "no". Summary Points: - Dr. Jain's emphasis on eliminating triggers to manage impulsivity in the highly connected digital age. - The discussion on the importance of recognizing and addressing Internet and gambling habits in relation to ADHD. - The revelation of socially productive alternatives as a method to channel the entrepreneurial spirit without succumbing to detrimental impulses. One Question for Listeners: How do you ensure that your impulsive tendencies are channeled into productive outcomes for your business instead of being sidetracked by Internet distractions? This question is pivotal as André highlights that awareness and action towards our impulsive patterns are key for the growth-minded entrepreneur. Reflecting on this can lead to more controlled, strategic decision-making that propels both personal and business growth. Tune into this episode to confront the allure of impulsivity head-on and steer your entrepreneurial journey with intentional focus. Dr. Umesh Jain is a distinguished Canadian psychiatrist whose career has been defined by his pioneering contributions to the field of adult ADHD. Beginning his journey in medical school in Canada and then honing his clinical skills in the United States with a residency and fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Jain soon realized his passion lay in research rather than clinical practice. After returning to Canada, he dedicated 27 years to the esteemed Clark Institute of Psychiatry, later known as the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, and worked at Sick Kids Hospital. In 1996, he established Canada's first research-based adult ADHD program, introducing groundbreaking advancements in the treatment and understanding of the disorder at a time when the recognition of adult ADHD was in its infancy, following its inclusion in the DSM-4 just two years prior. Dr. Jain is celebrated for his pivotal role in validating the persistence of ADHD into adulthood, a concept only recently accepted in the broader medical community since 1989, owing to the work of Lee Heckman and Gabrielle Weiss. Through his unwavering commitment to research and innovation, Dr. Jain has made a lasting impact on mental health care and the lives of individuals with ADHD. Jan Stewart is a highly regarded mental health governance expert and advocate. Growing up in New York and moving to Toronto after marrying a Canadian, she was untouched by major adversity throughout her youth and imagined a similar, happy life for her children. In her raw and emotional book Hold on Tight: A Parent's Journey Raising Children with Mental Illness, she candidly describes the shock she and her husband faced when each of their two young children started exhibiting troubling behaviours. While it took time to find the right doctors, diagnoses and treatments, Jan's roller coaster journey with the children's multiple mental health disorders taught her to insist on an integrated partnership approach with all those involved and propelled her to help parents of children with similar challenges. Her book gives readers invaluable insights and advice to become empowered and inspires them to persevere and never give up. It also importantly serves to better educate health care professionals on the parental perspective, as well as families, friends, educators and employers of those affected by these challenges. While Jan takes great pride in her business career, the majority of which was spent as a senior Partner with the global executive search firm Egon Zehnder, it is her mental health governance experience that has been the most meaningful to her. This includes currently Chairing the Board at Kerry's Place Autism Services, Canada's largest autism services provider, and previously serving as Vice Chair at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. She also served on the Parent Advisory Council at Mass General Hospital's Department of Neuropsychopharmacology, the Advisory Council of Access Open Minds, the Advisory Board of LIGHTS, and the Board of Directors of the former Ontario OCD Network. In addition, she co-founded the OCD Parent Advisory Group at SickKids Hospital. Jan is a Diamond Life Master in bridge and enjoys genealogy, fitness and dance. www.janstewartauthor.com --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/lily-coco/support
One of India's first supermodels. Actor. Cancer survivor. Mother of twins through surrogacy. Woman of no fixed address. Today I am honored to interview cross cultural phenomenon Lisa Ray. She is an internationally acclaimed performer, philanthropist and star with a reputation for taking on challenging issue-oriented films. Raised in Canada by an Indian father and Polish mother, Ray was discovered while on vacation in India and went on to become not only one of the most successful cover models and celebrities in India but also an acclaimed, award-winning actress who starred in Canada's Oscar nominated film, Water, amongst other prestigious credits. Named one of the ‘Ten most beautiful Indian women of the millenium' by a Times of India poll, Ray cemented her profile as an iconic figure in India before leaving for drama school in London and opportunities around the world. Along the way, Ray found time along the way to host her own entertainment show in India, filmed a landmark music video for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and became the enduring brand ambassador for Rado Watches. In 2009, Ray attended the Toronto International Film Festival in support of her work in two films. The event marked an important public announcement, in which Ray chose to share her diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma with media and the public. The outpouring of support was immediate and overwhelming. She also started a blog (‘The Yellow Diaries') to share her cancer experiences. Her forthrightness and humour in navigating a difficult illness have earned her the attention and respect of people from all corners of the world, as well as ‘The Voice Achievers Award, 2009' and ‘The Hope Award, 2010'. Ray went on to help raise funds for the establishment of the first research chair for Multiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Ray's philanthropic interests range from taking part in the on-air drive for SickKids Hospital to Ambassador of Plan Canada's ‘Because I Am A Girl' campaign, a global movement that supports the rights of girls around the world. In 2019, Lisa released her memoirs Close to The Bone. “An unflinching, deeply moving account of her nomadic existence: her entry into the Indian entertainment industry at sixteen; her relationship with her Bengali father and Polish mother; life on the movie sets and her brush with the Oscars; her battle with eating disorders; being diagnosed with multiple myeloma at thirty-seven; her spiritual quest; lovers and traitors, mentors and dream-makers; and the heartaches and triumphs along the way. It is also about Lisa's quest for love. Funny, charming, and gut-wrenchingly honest all at once, Close to the Bone is Lisa Ray's brave and inspiring story of a life lived on her terms.” Lisa and her husband Jason Dehni have two lovely daughters, Sufi and Soleil.
