Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has labelled AUKUS a bipartisan mistake. Is he right?Peter Garrett, former Labor minister and rock superstar, is now leading a public inquiry into Australia's submarine pact with the U.S. and UK to answer a number of essential questions. Are the promised submarines likely to arrive? Why is Australia paying billions into US and UK submarine production? And does AUKUS strengthen Australia's security, or deepen our dependence on Washington at a time of growing uncertainty about America's role in the world? In this episode, Peter Garrett joins Global Roaming to explain why the inquiry believes Australians have been largely excluded from one of the biggest defence decisions in the nation's history.Hamish Macdonald and Geraldine Doogue also test the arguments around China's military rise, Taiwan, interoperability with US forces, and whether Australia has ever had the national conversation that a project of this scale demands.Guest: Peter Garrett, leading commissioner of the public inquiry into AUKUS

Fresh off San Diego Comic-Con recovery, the crew lands back in the studio only to immediately spiral over technical jitters and a disastrous phone call to a local leather bar. Between Coral admitting she accidentally watched The Hobbit dubbed in Spanish and her hot take that Dune is just a cheap knockoff of Tremors, this episode plunges into maximum chaos, spy TV obsessions, and the ultimate search for an Ojai swimming hole. This Week's Insanity:The Eagle LA Phone Incident: Coral puts on her most polite phone voice to call Eagle LA and ask if "Avatar Night" is for the blue Na'vi people or the Netflix series, only to be informed it's actually a night for a local leather group. Iman Vellani & Hobbit Pre-Release: Gearing up for an exclusive Chachu signing with friend-of-the-shop Iman Vellani, alongside a massive Hobbit Magic: The Gathering pre-release weekend. Gay News & Spy TV: The gang breaks down season two of Lioness (specifically Nicole Kidman in a pantsuit), Hulu's Furious, and their ongoing obsession with Apple TV's Silo. Sexy Animated Airbenders: Coral enters her corner to obsess over the "prom sexy," hyper-ripped characters in the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender film. Dune vs. Tremors: Coral passionately argues that Dune is a complete rip-off of the 1990 classic Tremors, completely ignoring that Frank Herbert wrote the original book in 1965. Lesbian Swimming Holes: The crew plans Coral's upcoming trip to an Ojai "swimming hole" (not a watering hole), while Jeff breaks down why buying sea urchin (uni) out of the back of a truck and getting married in Solvang are peak lesbian activities. Loose, chaotic, and deeply queer, this episode is what happens when you hit “go live” and let the conversation do whatever it wants. New episodes every week. Your easy weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works. This week: two very special guests talk about how to actually make important change happen in the UK's live industry at grassroots level, and improve the live music fan's experience: we welcome back Lord Kevin Brennan of Canton, Labour member of the House of Lords and a recording musician himself. We also speak to Shain Shapiro, who amongst other things is author of This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better. (They are both speaking about this on 10th June at the Music Cities Convention in Hull, FYI.)** As ever, our Patreon Superfans get the full interviews – with 50% extra conversation! Become a Superfan of the podcast for free – and enjoy the exclusive weekly Lock-in bonus section! **We talk about the important stuff that fans care about: surge ticket pricing, local grassroots venues, music fan associations and more – and it's all built on the results of the UK's Fan–led Review of Live and Electronic Music, the House of Commons committee special report that Lord Brennan oversaw. He explains what he learned and what can – and should – be done next. Then Shain explains why live music must be treated as a "vital public good" – i.e. just like libraries or the NHS – and how people like you can build real political heft, in order to save their struggling local spaces. Lord Brennan reflects on his past work with the Music Streaming Inquiry, examining how parliamentary reports can ripple out to create real-world impact for creators, even when they don't instantly become law.Essential learnings from the live fans' report: From transport and safety to fair ticketing, Lord Brennan boils down the core pillars that everyday music lovers actually care about. The surge pricing backlash: The data doesn't lie – fans are united in their hatred of dynamic ticket surging. We discuss the urgent need for primary market transparency and why standard "free-market" arguments don't apply to the emotional experience of a gig.Shain Shapiro breaks down how society has prioritised the passive consumption of music (the noun) while deprioritising community participation (the verb), leading to the isolation of modern music fans. Why you should know your ward councillor. Shain outlines how forming local "Music Fan Associations" can force local councils to unlock underutilised property and rethink how spaces are used. The 24-Hour Dictators: Both guests flex their imaginary emergency powers to fix the ecosystem, including slashing VAT on tickets, restructuring property business rates, and mandating grassroots funding. As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Stuart and Joe======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com

Episode 421: On July 28, 1996, a fisherman hauling nets off the coast of Devon, England pulled up a body. The dead man had no wallet, no identification — nothing but a Rolex watch still ticking on his wrist. When British police traced the watch, it gave them a name: Ronald Joseph Platt, 51, of Essex. When they went looking for him, they found him — apparently alive. The trail led back across the Atlantic to Ayr, a small town in southwestern Ontario, where roughly seventy people had spent years trusting the wrong man with everything they had. By the time anyone understood what he'd done, he was already gone, and Ronald Platt was dead in the English Channel.
