Any major fire is potentially tragic, especially if the fire department can't help. That's the danger facing some communities. Earlier this week, we heard from Terry Gullage, the Deputy Fire Chief in Cartwright. He told us that a shortage of firefighters could leave them unable to respond to some emergencies as they issued an urgent plea for volunteers. While some people have responded, Gullage says the province should do more in-community training to help recruitment. The province says there are regional training officers who can do in-community training and technology is helping train firefighters as well. Hear from Robert Fowler, the Fire Commissioner for the province.

Sam & Bruce re-live some of the fun from Devon a few weeks ago where they played in the Silver medal (the oldest medal in English Golf) and The Kashmir Cup. 2 parts of a legendary week of golf played at Westward Ho! annually. This is a 2-part podcast with Sam & Bruce talking about the course specifically and trying to figure out why the links split opinion so heavily, as well as our interview with club historian Robert Fowler who wrote the history book for Royal North Devon as part of their 150th anniversary year. Robbie is great fun, and someone who has been around RND for pretty much all of his life. Amazing to think he actually shook hand with JH Taylor back in the late 1950's!Royal North Devon is the oldest golf club in England that still occupies the same land it was built on and known affectionately as 'the cradle of English golf'. Many greats have been members here over its 158 year history including the Horace Hutchinson (the earliest golf writer in Britain) and John Henry Taylor. For more on these figures head over to our fairly recent podcast with Stephen Proctor who talks about the characters during the great boom period in English golf as part of his book - The Long Golden Afternoon. Many thanks to the club for hosting a wonderful week of golf! Special shout out to Mike Harris & Dan Davies, as well as Blair, Hugo & Dale for the company along the way!

What does it mean today? On the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, these are the questions we ask ourselves as the world faces resurgent nativism, deep social divisions, and rising xenophobia. It's no exaggeration to say that the gravity of our crises today echoes back to the crossroads of 1944. Finding St. Lo presents us with two distinct voices from the past. The authors are Gordon Cross and Robert Fowler: a medic and sergeant who served in the 134th US Infantry Regiment. In their mobilization, Cross and Fowler witnessed horrific destruction alongside compelling heroism. Their firsthand accounts are joined here by essays by Fowler's grandson, Ted Neill. Neill explores the scars of war left by his grandfather's post-traumatic stress and its effects across three generations of family. Through Neill's reflections, three stories weave into one. The voices of soldiers, family members, and trauma specialists come together in prose that is readable and relatable. The photography of Gordon Cross, published here for the first time, provides an unparalleled window into the scenes of devastation and loss. But Cross also captures the stirrings of recovery and the foundations of a post-war peace that benefited billions--a peace that may endure, if we can be good stewards. Finding St. Lo examines a time in US history that was a crucible for the identity of a generation and the destiny of a nation. These stories and photos demonstrate, without question, that the values of self-sacrifice, community, courage, and compassion that steered a generation in 1944 can still serve us—and save us—today. Robert Fowler, a senior Canadian diplomat, was held hostage for five months by Al Qaeda in Niger in 2009. He says that since his capture and release, terror attacks and events in the region, such as the brief Islamist takeover of northern Mali, should serve as a wake-up call of a jihadist danger. He believes militants aim to set up a seven thousand kilometre Islamic caliphate stretching from Mauritania to Somalia. Robert Fowler has had a distinguished career as a Canadian diplomat and public servant.  From 1989 - 1995 he was deputy minister of National Defence; from 1995 - 2000, Canada's ambassador to the United Nations, and, following that, ambassador to Italy  from 2000-2006. Over the years he has served as foreign policy advisor to three Prime Ministers, and as Personal Representative for Africa. On Dec. 15, 2008, when he was in Niger as special envoy to the United Nations responsible for reconciling rebel and government forces, Fowler and his assistant Louis Guay, were kidnapped and held captive for 130 days by regional members of al-Qaeda. He tells the story of this ordeal in his book A Season in Hell. We talk about it and, among other things, Coleridge's 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner', sanity, religious fanaticism, mental illness, the Newtown massacre, and the clear and present threat posed to Mali, and Africa, by al-Qaeda.
