When things aren't going smoothly, most tech leaders don't slow down to rethink—they speed up to fix. We overcompensate. We protect the team too much, get involved in every decision, pile on late nights, or jump in to do others' jobs. It feels noble, but it's actually avoidance. In this episode, I unpack the hidden damage of overcompensating leadership: how it stunts team growth, creates dependency, and feeds your own ego more than your org's future. Many leaders nowadays suffer from this chronic condition. They do everything right if you only judge each single action by itself. On any given day, you can look at their decisions and say you would've done the same. But the best leaders know that this is a "greedy algorithm" sort of trap and escape. Imagine if your private leadership notebook — the one where you wrote what you really think about your team — suddenly became public. How surprised would they be reading it? How surprised would you be watching their reactions? In this episode, we explore the uncomfortable but essential gap between what leaders think and what they actually say.Learn why withholding honest feedback creates silent confusion, why coaching means sharing the real story early, and how radical transparency can turn things around. The uncomfortable truth:If honesty would shock your team, your leadership isn't as strong as you think.Stop Ad-Hoc LeadingGrab a copy of my books, Capitalizing Your Technology and The Tech Executive Operating System.Subscribe to the best newsletter for tech executives. For any questions or comments, reach out to me directly: aviv@avivbenyosef.com

Product Mastery – The Tech Leader's Force MultiplierMost tech leaders settle for “understanding the product.” But true product mastery is something else entirely. It's the difference between being a tech "leader" and being a genuine executive. In this episode, the final one in the series, we unpack what product mastery really means, why it's the trait that amplifies all the others, and how it lets you shape not just what gets built—but what wins. If you've ever felt like your team's impact is capped by business decisions you don't control, this is your way in.Grab a copy of my books, Capitalizing Your Technology and The Tech Executive Operating System.Subscribe to the best newsletter for tech executives. For any questions or comments, reach out to me directly: aviv@avivbenyosef.com

You may have heard of Tom Slick, the man who financed many early expeditions in search of Sasquatch both the in US and internationally. But did you know he was also a scientist, military man, inventor, philanthropist, and much more? Learn the strange, fascinating and tragically short history of Thomas Baker Slick Jr. with Heather Moser, Mark Matzke and guest host Aaron Deese. Email - Monsteropolis@smalltownmonsters.com SHOW NOTES Monsteropolis: Tom Slick Welcome back, you lawless knaves. READER MAIL - got at least one - HERE IT IS, from our friend Christine! — Hi Guys, First of all, congratulations on the success of your 10th anniversary Kickstarter! I can't wait to see your new films, especially The Siege of Ape Canyon and The Kinderhook Creature. I listened with interest to the Monsteropolis episode where you described the changing nature of the appearance of the Wendigo in popular culture from an emaciated human being to one with antlers and a stag's skull. In the fall last year I became aware of the legend of the Leshy of pagan Slavic culture through an excellent YA novel called "Where the Dark Stands Still" by Polish writer A.B. Poranek. When I googled the Leshy I was astounded to see images of what I recognised as the Wendigo. So this got me thinking - is there a Slavic influence at play here too? Perhaps this is something you could look in to! I am really looking forward to the book and film regarding the Wendigo which I understand may come out next year. I have been fascinated by the Wendigo since reading Algernon Blackwood's novella and there is one passage in particular that always sticks in my mind: "And soon after he slept, the change of wind he had divined stirred gently the reflection of the stars within the lake. Rising among the far ridges of the country beyond Fifty Island Water, it came from the direction in which he had stared, and it passed over the sleeping camp with a faint and sighing murmur through the tops of the big trees that was almost too delicate to be audible. With it, down the desert paths of night, though too faint, too high even for the Indian's hair-like nerves, there passed a curious, thin odor, strangely disquieting, an odor of something that seemed unfamiliar—utterly unknown." Most tech leaders say they value autonomy. But when it comes to actually letting go and empowering their teams? That's where the cracks show. For years, I've guided tech executives through a simple self-assessment of eight leadership traits—helping them pinpoint the highest-ROI areas for growth. Now, I'm bringing that process to the podcast. In this series, we'll break down each trait, giving you a framework to assess yourself and practical ways to improve. After previously discussing vision, now we're covering translating that into action: Instilling Purpose. Vision's no good if it's locked up in your head because then you have to play the master of puppets to make it a reality. Once you master instilling purpose, you gain the genuine benefit of having an empowered team work toward the same objective. More on cultivating that in this week's episode. When you're playing other people's games, you're following a path selected by others. You might have a better way of reaching that destination, or an entirely different one. Too often, we find ourselves playing by rules that weren't designed for us, following paths that don't serve us, and chasing goals we never truly chose. Seg 1 Obvious Future AI CEO, Eddi Weinwurm Resident AI for companies, storage of sensitive data, not for use with 3rd parties Predictive editing from media, has Search and use features No open AI, search documents internally – onsite at your company Use local servers and data center on site, nothing goes to the Internet or cloud For business to use AI with sensitive data, it cannot be in the cloud, it must be on site Business needs verticals with AI integration Examples of companies with sensitive data that cannot be on the Internet, are media, banking, healthcare, companies doing research and development RND Also dealing in Research, or math, like at universities Eddie does not want to call this AI, prefers the term machine learning, using a lot of that now and it will grow Standard cloud AI used in conjunction online with companies like Google or Microsoft, You can connect to an API, example is chat GPT The AI work is done in the cloud and over the Internet This involves data centers and huge computer networks Parameters of lots of neurons or brain power in computing Obvious Future is a technology company, looking to engineer a smaller API with the same machine learning intelligence History of technology, initially things are large and cost a lot of money Over time, it should be smaller and cheaper and faster How do you perform the same tasks and have great efficiency? Lots of uses for artificial intelligence, just one example is checking email for spam Currently, most AI is a large language model, tons of info or put into the machine learning. But a lot of it is not needed, lots of waste Compounds and routing models can be the future Seg 2 Chat GPT, is a supermodel, knows everything, but has wasted data To Eddie, this does not make sense For most AI tasks, you need a specialist, a form of expert knowledge Need to be routed to the right model, compound the route and info Network of smaller models – then Which expert model to ask a question This will reduce resources and energy use, plus better use, and faster Alan Tuning said, difficult work requires lots of engineering Obvious Future has created a machine learning product called Cara One, used for media production and film Runs on the premises of a business, local, not in the cloud Not connected to the Internet, in-house, so you can protect your Intellectual Property (IP) Air gapped setup with hardware, provide AI resources in house Problem, how to keep data in house Run in a server room on the premises Cap X model for a business where they can own their own AI Current AI Cloud set up as a subscription model, this a company would own Seg 3 Set up a server or multiple servers in a closet in a business office on site, but not a super computer AI hardware equals expensive cost Math plus technology and you can shrink the tech Companies cannot even use lots of AI services or ChatGPT right now, because it is open cloud, too much business risk, can't have your IP or information in the cloud Cloud options for business are limited, and typically a no go, plus regulations with data protection Obvious Future has their Resident AI product, called Cara One Even if the Internet is down, you can still use their resident AI product, and it cost less Huge paradox in technology right now, we have the best AI products and software and yet many companies cannot use it Resident AI resides on premises. This opens up the business environment for different verticals and markets that need resident AI Engine for AI, small sized so companies can use Rate of return will continue to go up as companies invest in this Hardware, software, chips are all improving and incorporating AI. Like all things in technology. There is constant improvement, and enhancing AI. Obvious Future dealing in financing rounds for a business opportunity Verticals of financing include industries like: banks, medical, legal, research data, customer data All can be potential customers Obvious Future working on developing the next level of Cara One, Resident AI for all of these potential businesses US Patent Office would be another example, they can only partially use cloud AI, need resident AI to sift through all the data Biotech Shows: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Biotech-Life+Sciences-Science AZ Tech Council Shows: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=az+tech+council *Includes Best of AZ Tech Council show from 2/12/2023 Tech Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Tech-Startup-VC-Cybersecurity-Energy-Science Best of Tech: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/size/5/?search=best+of+tech ‘Best Of' Topic: https://brt-show.libsyn.com/category/Best+of+BRT Thanks for Listening. A terrific way to erode trust and ruin your momentum as a leader is to be viewed as someone preaching "Do as I say, not as I do."

Your investors? The budget? The team? Regulation? Yes, you certainly have to deal with a lot of constraints. Yet you might be self-imposing the most challenging constraints of all. Who doesn't enjoy a hearty rant from time to time, am I right? Unfortunately, sometimes our brains mix up complaining with actually doing anything.
