Tonight, we're doing a cult! A lesser known cult that had its roots in the US, Canada, and elsewhere. A cult that had its own troubled teen industry camps set up to reprogram people...mostly kids who didn't tow the line of the doctrine. Sam Fife, and The Movement of God cult started in the early 1970s. It hit its peak in the late 70s, and ran strong into the 2000s, where it mostly fizzled out. This was a nasty one. It preached a sinless perfection doctrine, where in order to be a chosen one, you had to be completely without sin. But the cult leaders and elders were the ones who got to define what sin was. Child abuse was the norm, and pedophilia was blamed on the young female victim. They also taught faith healing. Vennie Kocsis was born into a Naval family, beginning her life with a childhood filled with adventure and exploration as her father retired from the Navy and went to work for Northrup Grumman. However, her idyllic years came to an abrupt end when her mother was lured into an evangelical cult known as Sam Fife's Move of God. In her memoir, “Cult Child,” Vennie delves into the challenging circumstances of her upbringing within two wilderness compounds, highlighting the resilience that got her through those difficult, formative years. Hannah Watkins continues her story of how she gradually created distance from a life written for her by a rigid interpretation of scripture. She spent her first 18 years in a popular Baptist sect known as 'the Move' of God. The group, led by Sam Fife, became popular in the late ’60s when Sam evangelized himself as a prophet. Luckily, Hannah’s experience was not physically invasive, but all the same damaging to her emotionally. After physically leaving the group, there were still several years spent shaking off a residue of spiritual guilt. In the time since Hannah has left, she has learned to value the sense of family and community she was raised in while also seeing how dangerous extreme adherence can be. She has become an advocate against restrictive religious beliefs and for awareness of their effects, especially on young women. Hannah Watkins was born into ‘the Move’ of God and spent her first 18 years in the organization. Led by Sam Fife, the group separated itself as a branch of the Baptist Church in the late 60’s. Luckily, Hannah’s experience was not physically invasive, but all the same, damaging to her emotionally with extreme doses of spiritual guilt. Most members were drawn in by the group’s return to a simple homesteading lifestyle where they could focus on reaching ‘holiness’. All members, male and female, were encouraged to speak freely about their sins and how they feel. However, when the women in her commune came together to preserve a tradition they valued they were rebuked for having a voice. In the time since Hannah has left, she has learned to value the sense of family and community she was raised in while also seeing how dangerous extreme adherence can be. She has moved away from these restrictive religious beliefs and advocates awareness of their effects, especially for young girls. Followers of The Move rejected mainstream society and headed into the wilderness in the 1970s, building isolated communities that were to set them up for the coming Apocalypse. Welcome to Part II, of my new series with Author, Artist, Poet, and Incredible Survivor, Vennie Kocsis. I'm so excited to be recording this series with Vennie, because the message she has, from her own lived experience is one that countless survivors can relate too. Plus, I enjoy being able to help support her work and message any way that I can because it's helped me in my own journey. Vennie is an author, artist, poetry writer, and survivor survivor of Sam Fife’s Move of God cult.  My creativity is the therapy by which I have survived the memories of my childhood abuse. There are many  caves where memories hide out, and I intend to travel them all in this lifetime. I am raw. I am flawed. I am open and here without shame, to tell the true story of my own childhood. I write to survive, and I write for those who cannot find the words to tell their own story. Most of all, I write for those who cannot express it. For you, I give my heart and all of my tender parts. We're talking about some of Vennie's own personal survivor story, which includes enduring childhood sexual abuse, and being raised in a religious cult.  You'll hear some of the tragic circumstances, grooming, and brainwashing that inspired her write her best selling book, Cult Child. Through it all she is here to share her story, in her own unique and personal way, to not only continue her own healing journey but also her passion of reaching others and being a voice for those who are unable to speak their truth. One of the struggles that I have faced my entire life, and most certainly as a result of childhood trauma, is in the area of food. Or better put, realizing out how unhealthy of a relationship I'd had with it for most of my life and finding ways to turn that around. Vennie is an author, artist, poetry writer, and survivor survivor of Sam Fife’s Move of God cult.  My creativity is the therapy by which I have survived the memories of my childhood abuse. There are many  caves where memories hide out, and I intend to travel them all in this lifetime. I am raw. I am flawed. I am open and here without shame, to tell the true story of my own childhood. I write to survive, and I write for those who cannot find the words to tell their own story. Most of all, I write for those who cannot express it. For you, I give my heart and all of my tender parts. I first met Vennie several years ago, through Twitter, and almost immediately we hit it off as friends and fellow survivors. Our mutual respect for each other as survivors and being willing to share so openly about our struggles, helped form a lasting bond of friendship that I value so much. Her insight into the world of surviving some of the most horrific abuse imaginable has helped her in using her voice and talents to reach a huge audience with a message of hope and resilience. A message of finding ways to tell your story, and not be ashamed in asking for help.  To that end, not being ashamed to admit that she is still a work in progress, as we all are on our own journeys. She uses her book, Cult Child, her art and poetry to convey what's in her heart both now and when she was experiencing the trauma first hand. It's real, it's raw, it's vulnerable, and it's all about not being ashamed of who she is and the message that she has for the world.
