The barren fall of 1934 had left many areas with no produce to exhibit and, as a result, no fall festivals. But the 1935 harvest was bountiful for all crops except wheat. North Dakota was getting “its chin back up,” prompting fall festival planning across the state on this date. More than just community gatherings, these festivals reflected “a revived spirit” and a grateful heart in 1935.

So, this year, I want to talk about Advent, which is a season on a lot of liturgical calendars but is often misunderstood as being another name for Christmas--which it isn't. Advent is a word meaning "the arrival of an important person or event" and because Advent almost always (but not this year) overlaps with Hannukah and many scholars believe Jesus was conceived in the winter and born during the Fall Festivals, I would like to think that the Light of the World was indeed conceived during Hannukah, beginning a nine-month season of waiting with anticipation for His birth for Mary and ourselves looking even more forward to His second coming.  Let's tell a "what if" story based on the Gospel of Luke to see what the beginning of Mary's wait might have looked like. Max (the streaming service) gets some good news for a change. The New SOPRANOS documentary just dropped on Max. Don't fuggetaboutit. Big updates on CONSTANTINE 2, which is apparently happening. TRANSFORMERS ONE is good, actually?! These might be the best film of the fall festivals in 2024. In this episode of Utah Weekly Forum, FM100.3 Host Rebecca Cressman is joined by West Valley Mayor Karen Lang, My Hometown Initiative leaders Craig and Linda Burton, and WVC My Hometown Chair Randy Whitehead who share the impact of this partnership between the city's community members, the Interfaith Council, local businesses, local churches, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. On Sept 7th at the West Granger CRC and on Sept 14th at the Central Granger CRC there will be free neighborhood Fall Festivals with food, live bands, climbing walls, water slides, and resource booths from 5:30-8:30pm. To learn more about MyHometown or to get involved, send an email to: myhometown@wvc-ut.gov Or call Karin at 801-965-5520.
