201 Female Autism: Challenging Stereotypes, and the Need for Education

Unapologetically Sensitive

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2023 47:31

Female Autism: Challenging Stereotypes, and the Need for Education Another Highly Sensitive Therapist and I discuss the challenges (and gifts) of being diagnosed autistic. We discuss how autism in sensitive females (Assigned Female at Birth AFAB) presents differently, as well as how autism in females tends to be very different than autism in males. We address common things that are said that may feel supportive, but aren't, and we talk about common misperceptions as well. We talk about the lack of research and challenges between the Autism community and the HSP community. GUEST Stephanie Gardner Wright, LMSW HIGHLIGHTS   Autistic women tend to internalize their struggles, so they don't “look” autistic 80% of those diagnosed with autism, also have ADHD 95% of women who seek an autism assessment are diagnosed with autism Undiagnosed autism can be misdiagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Anxiety, OCD, ADHD (it's possible to have comorbidities) Seek to understand the experience of the person who tells you they're autistic Ask how you can support them Saying things like, “Everyone is a little autistic,” or “You don't look/seem/act autistic,” or “I wouldn't have known you are autistic” is harmful and invalidating Questioning the validity of someone's diagnosis is invalidating (and not really your business) We need more research around how autism and sensitives may coincide Recognizing signs of autism and seeking a proper diagnosis can improve understanding and acceptance. Undiagnosed individuals often feel isolated, misunderstood, and unsupported, impacting mental health and well-being. Lack of research on autism in women and the correlation between ADHD and autism contribute to undiagnosed cases. Increased awareness and understanding are needed to better support neurodivergent individuals. Proper diagnoses are crucial for providing appropriate support and self-care. Recognizing the possibility of misdiagnosis promotes awareness about autism and challenges stereotypes. Late autism diagnosis can provide deeper insights and self-awareness, empowering individuals in personal and professional life. GUEST BIO Stephanie Gardner-Wright, LMSW, is a licensed psychotherapist and mental health coach who specializes in supporting highly sensitive and neurodivergent folks. She hosts the podcast Sensitivity Sessions, supporting sensitive souls to find ease and purpose in an overstimulating world. After working with her, her clients have been able to reduce their anxiety, set better boundaries, manage their depression, and heal deep-seated traumas. Stephanie brings to her clients more than a decade of experience helping hundreds of individuals through her private practice and in both agency and community mental health settings.  PODCAST HOST Patricia is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Coach.  She knows what it's like to feel like an outcast, misfit, and truthteller.  Learning about the trait of being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), helped Patricia rewrite her history with a deeper understanding, appreciation, and a sense of self-compassion.  She created the podcast Unapologetically Sensitive to help other HSPs know that they aren't alone, and that being an HSP has amazing gifts, and some challenges.  Patricia works online globally working individually with people, and she teaches Online Courses for HSPs that focus on understanding what it means to be an HSP, self-care, self-compassion, boundaries, perfectionism, mindfulness, communication, and creating a lifestyle that honors us LINKS Stephanie's Links  Website--https://www.stephaniegardnerwright.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephaniegardnerwright/  Podcast: https://www.innerguideconsulting.com/podcast   Samantha Craft's autism checklist--https://everydayautistic.wordpress.com/2016/05/02/females-with-aspergers-syndrome-checklist-by-samantha-craft/    Samantha Craft's website and link to autism checklist--http://www.myspectrumsuite.com/samantha-crafts-autistic-traits-checklist/   Unmasking Autism by Devon Price Patricia's Links  HSP Online Course--https://unapologeticallysensitive.com/hsp-online-groups/ Online HSP Course Materials (no group included) https://patriciayounglcsw.com/product-category/hsp-classes/ Receive the top 10 most downloaded episodes of the podcast-- https://www.subscribepage.com/e6z6e6 Sign up for the Newsletter-- https://www.subscribepage.com/y0l7d4 To write a review in itunes: click on this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/unapologetically-sensitive/id1440433481?mt=2 select “listen on Apple Podcasts” chose “open in itunes” choose “ratings and reviews” click to rate the number of starts click “write a review” Website--www.unapologeticallysensitive.com Facebook-- https://www.facebook.com/Unapologetically-Sensitive-2296688923985657/ Closed/Private Facebook group Unapologetically Sensitive-- https://www.facebook.com/groups/2099705880047619/ Instagram-- https://www.instagram.com/unapologeticallysensitive/ Youtube-- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOE6fodj7RBdO3Iw0NrAllg/videos?view_as=subscriber Tik Tok--https://www.tiktok.com/@unapologeticallysensitiv e-mail-- unapologeticallysensitive@gmail.com Show hashtag--#unapologeticallysensitive Music-- Gravel Dance by Andy Robinson www.andyrobinson.com

How I discovered I'm autistic and have ADHD

Many more women are discovering they're autistic later in life.  Including many women who may not appear to fit the ‘stereotypical' perceptions of autism.  Like TV presenter Melanie Sykes, model and TV presenter Christine McGuinness (wife of Top Gear presenter Paddy) and Period Power author Maisie Hill.  I've talked openly about my diagnosis of ADHD. Earlier this year I discovered that I'm also autistic. Something that has taken me longer to feel comfortable talking about - mainly I feel because of my fear of not being ‘believed'. Mainly due to peoples' stereotypical and, quite frankly, outdated views on what autism looks like - particularly in women.  In this episode of the Courageous Content Podcast (which you can also read as a blog) I share what led me to this discovery and how it's impacting my life and business.  Key Links https://janetmurray.co.uk/the-courators-club/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=club (Janet Murray's Courators Club) https://janetmurray.co.uk/courageous-blog-content-kit/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=blogging-kit (Janet Murray's Courageous Blog Content Kit) https://janetmurray.co.uk/courageous-content-live-newcastle/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=cclive-2022 (Janet Murray's Courageous Content Live event) https://janetmurray.co.uk/courageous-email-lead-magnet-kit-waitlist/?fbclid=IwAR0kdtOMdep1SEik_HGIfcXEcK_SjTslRkuY-EthxdGCQDytVgMTj4olV18?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=lead-magnet-kit (Save £30 on my Courageous Email Lead Magnet Content Kit using the code MAGNET67.) https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fjanetmurray.co.uk%2Fbusiness-basics-content-kit%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR0Gn0X8LN0BP6FpjxJbRdEhtRmB4905AZiQXKHCPpR4z4_Bh3HPfCC6KiQ&h=AT0Bsmss2i3rp_9AS1bM-3zcJ-OAm_7-7Zvj-oZcWYrL_KqRrpmXzDZ5fgq5fLL3fmF5yw1EcfpLaGTteHjVpe6CV_RxjBCjFRZ3hNXbKbt2qAMf-IhILZ3rzQyhhUBS6D0?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=business-kit (Save £30 on my Business Basics Content Kit using the code PODCAST67.) https://janetmurray.co.uk/courageous-launch-content-kit/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=launch-kit (Save £30 on my Courageous Launch Content Kit using the code PODCAST67. ) https://janetmurray.co.uk/product/courators-kit/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=courators-kit (Janet Murray's Courators Kit) https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fjanetmurray.co.uk%2Fthe-ultimate-course-launch-checklist%2F%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3dsPrPU0ya0myvtFeElsM-hthLgszz_hihZD_mQTNTBrAZ-wRgGdfa3ek&h=AT233KuUmv2ZPYdDXerw4bdUqik7OgnFRZyEWYtWUFttj3cC0L6UvPt2fO7hUxRpkG9nAdGQVtIIhWo_IwmSIZENnkhFrVpt0nDWEfuG3XJ9YtRqQk5VHB0AZf_PkueK3vM (Janet Murray's FREE Ultimate Course Launch Checklist) http://www.courageouscontentplanner.com/?utm_source=captivate&utm_medium=podcast&utm_term=&utm_content=&utm_campaign=planner (Janet Murray's Courageous Content Planner) https://janetmurray.co.uk/how-i-discovered-i-had-adhd-and-why-its-my-superpower-as-an-entrepreneur/ (How I discovered I had ADHD (and why it's my superpower as an entrepreneur)) (podcast) Samantha Craft: http://www.myspectrumsuite.com/samantha-crafts-autistic.../ (Autistic Woman's Checklist) https://www.youtube.com/c/YoSamdySam (Yo Samdy Sam) (YouTube Channel)...

Cloie Parfitt is a psychotherapist, originally from Tennessee in the United States, now living in Norwich in the UK. A former nurse, she switched to psychotherapy when she realised that she found the hospital environment and long shifts too much of a sensory challenge.  She now works with many neurodivergent clients, and is currently undertaking a professional doctorate in counselling and psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh, where she works collaboratively with autistic women to explore their experience of psychological trauma and trauma therapy.  In our conversation we talk about  ➡ Her experiences of social isolation, sensory overload, burnout and depression ➡ Psychotherapy and autism ➡ Why some types of therapy don't always work for autistic women ➡ Barriers to effective treatment, and how mental health practitioners can better mitigate these challenges. Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences.
