This episode dives into the concept of the “sensitive autistic phenotype,” highlighting how many highly sensitive adults are discovering they are autistic later in life. The discussion emphasizes the need to view autism holistically, recognizing the intersection with gender, race, and other identities, and focuses on strength-based approaches and self-advocacy for better well-being. Emerging Perspective on Autism: Understanding why highly sensitive individuals may not have fit the classic autism stereotypes. Defining the Sensitive Autistic Phenotype: Emotional, sensory, and social sensitivity as core traits. Why This Matters: The importance of accurate identification for adults who've felt misunderstood, and the new approaches practitioners can take. Myths About Empathy: Correcting the misconception that autistic people lack empathy; in fact, many experience heightened empathy. Masking and Burnout: Exploring how camouflaging natural behaviors leads to exhaustion and long-term health impacts. The Double Empathy Problem: Shifting from ‘deficit' to ‘difference' in communication styles between autistic and non-autistic people. Self-Advocacy and Support: Practical tips on recognizing internal cues, using accommodations, balancing stimulation, and thriving within a society not set up for sensitive needs. Welcome back to the Autism Family Resource Podcast! Are you a parent of a child with autism struggling to find the right support and therapy for your child? You are not alone. Many parents find it challenging to navigate the world of autism care, especially with the numerous therapies and approaches available. But what if there was a different approach to autism care that focused on the whole family and was more collaborative and supportive? What if there was a therapy that was more play-based and encouraged intrinsic motivation? We have good news! There is. In this episode, we have another awesome guest on our show, Will Martin, from Soar Autism Center. Soar Autism Center is doing amazing work, taking a fresh approach to autism care that is centered on whole family support, early intervention, and collaborative care. Guest: Will Martin MEd, BCBA is a board-certified behavior analyst and Head of Care Model Design implementation at Soar Autism Center. Soar provides Early Start Denver Model-based therapy to children with autism in the Phoenix and Denver metro areas. Website: https://soarautismcenter.com/ Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, YouTube Key Takeaways: The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is a play-based intervention that encourages intrinsic motivation. The goal of ESDM therapy is to find something the child likes and incorporate therapy into that activity. DTT stands for Discrete Trial Training and is one of the original forms of ABA. It involves repeated practice of skills in an isolated or controlled context. When looking for an ABA provider for your child, it is important to ask questions about the type of therapy and the approach used. Red flags that may indicate your child would benefit from an autism assessment include: communication struggles, challenging behaviors, and difficulties engaging with your child in play. Any interventions or therapies should match the child's values and the family's values. Soar Autism Center typically serves children between two and five years old. Sometimes, they will serve children a little older than that if they are getting ready to transition to school. Soar Autism Center takes all major insurance, including Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans. Once an assessment is complete, the BCBA, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist will get together and make clinical recommendations. In this episode, I discuss the differences that set autism apart from high sensitivity, particularly in women. I highlight the outdated diagnostic criteria for autism and the misdiagnosis or lack of diagnosis in many women. We'll explore the unique characteristics of autistic women, such as the challenges of masking, the need for solitude, and the intense sensitivity across multiple senses. I also emphasize the importance of self-compassion and acceptance for autistic individuals and the need for a neurodiverse society. We do things differently! Key Points: Many individuals who identify as highly sensitive may actually be autistic, prompting updates to sensitivity quizzes. Autistic women face hidden challenges. Many of us have feelings of being different and flawed. Autistic women require solitude to reduce overstimulation and restore energy. We tend to experience heightened sensitivity across multiple senses, which can be intense. We prefer communicating honestly and directly, valuing clarity. Accepting an autism diagnosis can lead to reframing experiences and self-compassion. Social gatherings, sudden changes, and small talk can be challenging. Repetitive movements serve as a way to soothe and focus, with fidget tools aiding in this. Written communication may be preferred and eye contact can feel intense and overwhelming. Managing emotions, especially when fatigued, is challenging. We experience high empathy. Building a neurodiverse society that celebrates differences is vital for our well-being. In 2020, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). And the rates are rising higher each year.Autism spectrum disorder impacts not just the life of the child but their family too. Children on the autism spectrum typically require a level of special services or modifications of educational programs. And it's often left to moms to direct these services, pursue a diagnosis, and establish a plan for their developmentally delayed child. Not an easy road to walk by any means. As we close on Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism, I spoke with Hayley Augusta, a mother of a son with autism and hyperlexia. Hayley talks about leaving her dream career and luxe lifestyle in Dubai to care for her son on the autism spectrum and what she wished parents of neurotypical children understood about this disorder. As she shares her experience navigating the autism diagnosis process, Haley also covers the best tools, services, and resources for moms of autistic children to consider. If you're a parent of a neurotypical child, have a child who is autistic, or curious about a disorder that is becoming more prevalent each year, you need to hear this episode!Connect with Hayley at:https://nosexinthesuburbspodcast.com/IG @nosexinthesuburbshttps://www.facebook.com/nosexinthesuburbsBio: Hayley Augusta is a suburban mom of two. One has autism, and the other is neurotypical. She had a 15+ year career in global media and worked with big clients like Facebook and Emirates Airlines. But when her son was diagnosed, she decided to quit her job to learn more about autism and help him with his special needs. It turns out not only did he have autism, he is gifted. That's called twice-exceptional; 0.5% of kids fall into this category. So there is a lot of work to be done! She hosts the No Sex in the Suburbs podcast as a spoof on what happens after you marry your Big Love and live out your Sex in the City phase of life. It deals with mom identity and all the challenges that come with a husband, a mortgage, and a couple of kids.***Follow Mom After Hours on Instagram @momafterhours or Facebook at @momafterhourspodcast. Through a collaboration of several state agencies, the Minnesota Department of Human Services put together a valuable website for parents and caregivers who have children with autism: the Minnesota Autism Resource Portal. This resource helps families and individuals with autism throughout their lifespan, and was created with the needs and concerns of Minnesota families at the forefront. This week, we sit down with Minnesota DHS staff Nicole Berning and Kim Hicks to learn more about how this came to be and how families can make use of this portal. Our sponsor for this episode is U.S. Bank, who is also our presenting sponsor for this year's Fraser Annual Benefit. Join us for a magical night on Saturday, October 24 for a virtual benefit helping families and individuals with autism, special needs, and mental health challenges. If it takes a village to raise a child, it may need two villages to care of a child with special needs. Adversity has a way of revealing who genuinely is in one's corner and who isn't. This episode takes you through various examples of how people chose to be present in another's life in a meaningful way. It also briefly touches upon how even family members can disappoint you at a time when you are at your most vulnerable. Through a series of random acts of kindness, Village 2.0 would emerge and prove to be a strong foundation for a family in need of community.

Listen in to this interview with the Director of Advocacy & Community Access at ABLE-SC, Robbie Kopp, discusses the virtual Advocacy Day event happening on April 1st. This is an opportunity to show up online and listen in to some amazing guest speakers that Robbie shares towards the end of the interview. Advocacy Day for Access & Independence was first created as an initiative in the State Plan for Independent Living in 2014, its inaugural gathering attracted over 300 South Carolina residents in May 2014. Since then, support has grown to 25 organizations statewide all unified in an effort to ensure people with disabilities have equal access and opportunity. People with disabilities face unnecessary and discriminatory barriers to transportation, employment, healthcare, and housing. Advocacy Day for Access and Independence will shine a light on these barriers in hopes of improving the lives of all South Carolinians. STRIVE WorldWIDE is a first-of-its kind online program to teach independent living skills to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. WIDE represents Welcoming Independence Diversifying Education. Online learning has become common in education, and for good reason: it offers learners the flexibility to learn at their own pace, allows the learner to schedule class time around their busy schedules, provides access to those in rural areas or with limited access to transportation, uses technology to make the content more accessible (such as closed captioning, audio, visual, recorded seminars, and more), and provides the “quiet learner” the opportunity to be heard. That’s why STRIVE is excited to offer this unique post-secondary programming geared specifically towards individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities! Able SC is a Center for Independent Living (CIL), an organization not about “helping” people with disabilities, but built on the central concept of self-empowerment. It’s a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability nonprofit that provides an array of independent living services. We do everything it takes to empower people with disabilities to live active, self-determined lives including advocacy, services, and support. More than half of our staff are persons with disabilities, as are over half of our Board of Directors. We didn’t just learn this– we live it! "An expression that plenty of people in the autism community use is 'If you've met one person with autism, you've only met one person with autism.' Each person is so unique," says Mr. Morgan. This episode arrives in April which is autism awareness month, so we are happy to dovetail with one aspect of the organization's mission which is to raise awareness of and sensitivity to issues surrounding those with the condition. We begin with some new terminology that describes those with autism. These terms better reflect people's abilities, whereas previous words underestimated them. They stress that competence should be presumed when you first meet someone with autism, rather than making quick judgments. One of the big take-aways here is the diversity within the autism spectrum. Both guests are able to speak to this based on their own personal experiences. Some core features that capture the extent of the range include differences in communications and sensory processing. Mr. Morgan addresses his experience with bullying and social isolation, but he also shares how he lives a very fulfilling and professional productive life. He also describes his intense passion for and fascination with certain topics, and calls this one of the greatest aspects to his autism. He says he can study a topic to a point where others might feel fatigued or give up. 'I think we're all pretty interesting people," he adds. Ms. Rotsky addresses issues surrounding her son, including the time when they received her son's autism diagnosis when he was two years old and how it was "life changing for the entire family." She and her husband turned to other parents and found a community of support. She explains how information wasn't coming from the pediatrician, and Milestones filled in the gaps in so many areas. "Knowledge is power." Many of us don't know what we don't know, so tune in and get an education that will help you appreciate and better understand others on this planet.
