Today we chat with Reid Callanan, founder and director of the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and renowned photo educator Craig Stevens, formerly of Maine Media Workshops and Savannah College of Art & Design, about photography mentors, lifelong learning, and the role photo workshops play in cultivating community. In addition to all the responsibilities involved in leading the workshops for the past 32 years, Reid is also an accomplished photographer in his own right who jumps on the opportunity to teach workshops whenever he can.  Reid's journey in photography started in 1974 during a semester abroad at Richmond College in London. He's been making images ever since using a variety of photographic processes. After spending 14 years at the Maine Photographic Workshops, Reid headed west in 1990, where he founded the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and the non-profit Santa Fe Center for Photography, now known as CENTER.  In addition to serving as CENTER's Vice-President of the Board of Directors, he serves on the President's Council of the Texas Photographic Society; he's a Board member for the American Society of Media Photographers Foundation; and The National Center for The Photograph. Craig Stevens is a photographer, printmaker and photographic educator.  He has taught, written about, and lectured extensively on art and education since 1975 when he received his MFA from Ohio University.  For 12 years he was associate director of the Maine Photographic Workshops, where he was also involved in the creation and development of the Workshops' Resident Program. In 1994, he was workshops director for the 25th anniversary of Les Rencontres Internationale de la Photographie in Arles, France.  Additionally, Craig has served on the faculties of the Santa Fe Workshops, the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and Les Ateliers de l'Image in France. In episode 293 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on listening to experts, and learning from those with experience. He also notes the passing of Ross McDonnell, Larry Fink, Elliott Erwitt and Shane McGowan. Plus this week, photographer Arthur Meyerson takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Since 1974, native Texan Arthur Meyerson has travelled throughout the world, creating award winning advertising, corporate and editorial photographs, as well as an extensive body of art based imagery. A three-time winner of Adweek's Southwest Photographer of the Year award, Meyerson is on Communication World's list of top 10 corporate photographers and was named one of the 30 best advertising photographers by American Photo. His awards are numerous including gold medals from the New York Art Directors Club, the Art Directors Club of Houston, the Dallas Society of Visual Communications and the Stephen Kelly Award for his work on the Nike advertising campaign. Meyerson was selected by Nikon to their illustrious Legends Behind the Lens list and honoured by the Houston Advertising Federation as the inaugural recipient of the Only In Houston award for individuals. In 2008, the Houston Decorative Center named him as the first photographic recipient of their annual Stars Of Design celebration. Besides his commercial work, Myerson's fascination with light, colour and the moment culminated in his 2012 book, The Color of Light. His second book, The Journey, was published in 2017. Meyerson's photographs are in the public collections of several major institutions and have been exhibited internationally. Today, he teaches workshops, undertakes individual mentoring and participates in speaking engagements throughout the U.S. and abroad. Kevin Kennedy is a professional photographer based out of Silver Spring, MD. Kevin opened his studio in 1999. His formal studies include Maryland University College Park and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops as well as apprenticeships under several photographers. He uses a unique approach to portraits by evoking emotion through subjects telling their story in their expressions.  Kevin became acutely aware of facial expressions when half his face became paralyzed. It was diagnosed as Bell's palsy, during his senior year in college. Minoring in Psychology at UMCP, he applied a few of the theoretical treatments to aid recovery. While he has recovered 95% of facial muscle control, the experience has made him acutely aware of subtle facial expressions in others. He has applied that study to his portrait photography work.  Kevin now works as a full time professional portrait photographer. Much of his work lately has been headshots. Sarah Leen is the former Director of Photography for National Geographic Visual Media. For nearly 20 years before that she worked as a freelance photographer for National Geographic magazine until 2004, when she joined the staff as a Senior Photo Editor. Sarah published 16 stories and produced five covers for the magazine. Sarah has taught photography and photo editing workshops at the Missouri Photo Workshops, the International Center of Photography in New York City, the Maine Photography Workshops, the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, and the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. As the Director of Photography Sarah led the photo and video staff for National Geographic Visual Media, including National Geographic and Traveler magazines, the National Geographic photography studio and the photo engineering department. In 2019, Sarah Leen founded The Visual Thinking Collective as a community for independent photo editors, teachers and visual managers to serve photographers, media, art and academic institutions, NGOs, and corporate clients in telling their stories in unique, authentic and highly visual ways. George Nobechi is a Tokyo-born, Japanese/Canadian photographer. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in History/International Relations, which has fostered an interest in life in different regions of the world. When he was 19 his father suddenly passed away, changing the course of his life and informing his future work; he left Vancouver and supported himself and his family with a 14-year career in the business world in Tokyo and New York. In 2008 he embarked on a solo journey around the world through 14 countries on six continents; his quest was to find peace with the death of his father. It was at this time that his interest in photography began. In 2015, Nobechi decided to leave his career and studied photography under National Geographic icon Sam Abell. With Abell's mentorship, Nobechi worked with numerous artists at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and established their first Japan expeditions. Since then he has continued to journey freely, but with purpose, making new work centered around quiet moments that are inspired by his longing to re-connect with life in the wake of his father's death. In 2016, Nobechi received numerous awards for his work, which was selected to international group shows in Texas, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Oregon. He also enjoyed some major breakthroughs in winning a Gold Prize in the Tokyo International Foto Awards and being named a finalist in Photo Lucida's "Critical Mass." Nobechi now splits his time between the expansive desert landscape of southern Arizona and the quiet countryside of Japan. Sam Abell has been a photographer for over 40 years and has been largely known for his work with National Geographic. His career has revolved largely through his many long-term projects for magazines and books. He is also an author, artist and teacher.  He has published several books including The Photographic Life, Seeing Gardens and The Life of a Photograph which provide wonderful collections of his body of work.  Sam's ability to compose layered compositions have helped him to create images that are considered some of the best photographs ever made. Celebrated photographer Matthew Jordan Smith has worked with some of the top names in entertainment today including Haile Berry, Jennifer Connelly, Jamie Fox, Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey.  Matthew’s love of photography and people stretches far beyond his commissioned work and has given birth to several personal projects including two books. The first book entitled Lost and Found and sponsored by Microsoft focuses on missing and exploited children and is endorsed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. His other book includes Sepia Dreams which features portraits and interviews with accomplished African Americans.  A native of New York City, Matthew has taught at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. He is also an active volunteer with several art schools including Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and RIT.
