Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Who told Ronnie Drew, Shane McGowan, Tom Waits or Lisa O'Neill they could sing? They are not singers in the classical sense, but they can hold a tune and, more importantly, tell a story that engages an audience. Good communicators have all types of voices, accents and varying levels of education, yet you want to hear from them and engage with them. "Use the talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best" Henry Van Dyke Think about your favourite singers; they are probably not your partner's favourites. I know that over the dinner table in our house, we have frequent discussions about the music playing in the background of our conversations. I persist with my choices, and thankfully, if people do not like the singer or the song, it will not be long before another track rolls in, thanks to streaming services. In the same way, I have potential clients who do not want to hear the message I want to deliver to their audience. So, I must choose my audience, knowing that my message and style will not resonate with everyone. Thankfully, enough people like my coaching and training style, which is about building confidence by pointing out what they do well when speaking to an audience. When I do this, people will try a little harder and be prepared to take risks and grow in the process. P.S. Everyone can be a good communicator in the same way that everyone can sing or hold a tune, given support and encouragement. "Ah, the blessings of the cursed. Shane McGowan's torrid and mighty voice is mud and roses punched out with swaggering stagger, ancient longing that is blasted all to hell. A Bard's bard, may he cast his spell upon us all forevermore."Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan

The Two Matts discuss the legacy of the former Secretary of State, who died this week. How will he be remembered? As one of the most effective diplomats of our times … or a mass murdering war criminal who should have died in The Hague? Or is the answer, just possibly, a bit more nuanced than that? After the break, Matt and Matt consider how that other giant of international politics (and that's a joke, for the hard of understanding) handled Britain's relationship with Greece this week. Is Rishi Sunak really quite as pathetic as he seems? (spoiler alert: YES!) and what was the thinking (spoiler alert: THERE WASN'T ANY!) behind him deciding to insult his fellow NATO leader so gravely. You'd need a heart of marble not to laugh. All this plus Shane McGowan and why you should read this year's Booker winner.Further Reading:Nixon and Kissinger: Partners in Power by Robert Dallek The Trial of Henry Kissinger by Christopher HitchensProphet Song by Paul LynchLISTENER OFFER: subscribe and get a copy of Alistair Campbell's 2023 diary absolutely FREE. On this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, I am joined by music journalist Adrian Thrills.Adrian became a fan of The Jam from 1976 - pre-Polydor record deal - seeing them at the 100 Club, upstairs at Ronnie Scotts, The Marquee, Red Cow in Hammersmith and at many more gigs... Together with his friend, Shane McGowan, Adrian did one of the very first interviews with the band for own 48 Thrills fanzine (One of the original punk fanzines that launched in '76).As a friend, and journalist, he became part of the inner-circle, even joining the band on the road with gigs in Dunstable, Crawley, Malvern, Falkirk and Barrow-in-Furnesss...Adrian spent the 1980s at NME, where he continued to feature and review The Jam, even conducting one of the final interviews with Paul before the split at the end of 1982.Look closely at the rear sleeve for live album Dig the New Breed for a brilliant shout-out too!"A brief six years , sweaty frantic Red Cow residency, 1st week 50 people, 2nd week 100, by the fourth week. A queue around the block! SWITCH the marquee with Shane, Claudio and Adrian dancing on stage to the confusion of the usual Marquee hippies!"In more recent years, Adrian has been a music writer for The Daily Mail and he's reviewed plenty of Paul Weller albums in his time there. He also created sleeve notes on The Very Best of The Jam, The Jam Live at the BBC and the Hit Parade boxset in 2006.
