Ferdinando Scianna"Mare Magnum"Da Ferdinando Scianna a Martin Parr.

Today, I spend time with Mike Crawford, a dynamic London photographer and master printer. For four decades he has worked with the world's most highly regarded photographers, including Martin Parr and Brian Griffin, one of the music industry's most prominent photographers. More recently, he was chosen to print hitherto unseen photographs for the celebrated late photographer Elliott Erwitt for his ‘Found, not Lost' book. As a photographer, Mike Crawford's captivating work, featuring urban landscapes and portraiture, is predominantly shot on film and crafted in the darkroom. I visit Mike on location at his company Lighthouse Darkroom, within the building that was once home to Russia's Zenit UK operation. With the arrival of August, there's a new assignment too, set this month by social and street photographer Emily Renier, one of Fujifilm's newest ambassadors. Denis Curti"Jacques Henri Lartigue.

Sly, ironic, absurd, all come to mind when you see the moments he captures and we talk about how it’s hard to photograph “funny,” about attitudes and techniques, and the difference between laughing with someone and at them. We also ask about the work he has done during the pandemic shutdown. After a break, we welcome photographer Ashly Stohl. A Leica Ambassador, Stohl’s best known work concentrates on her family, particularly her three children. She is also the publisher and co-founder of Peanut Press, begun in 2015 with her first book, Charth Vader, which takes a look at her youngest son, clearly a big fan of Star Wars. Her second book, Days and Years, follows up with an intimate portrait of her three children. A quote from Stohl sums up why she is a welcome judge for our Leica Photo Challenge: “There is a saying that all portraits are really self-portraits. So, what are portraits of your kids? They are portraits of a parent. I take pictures of my kids, and if you’ll look closely you’ll also see me in there—my worries and fears, my attempts to correct the problems of my own childhood, my heart and my struggles.” Join us for this inspiring and enjoyable episode. STUFF FROM THE LOFT - Dave Dye

I'm guessing you're not as familiar with that name as were with others I've posted? But you'll be familiar with his work. Saatchi's 'Pregnant Man'? BBH's 'Black Sheep' poster? CDP's 'Wolf In Sheeps Clothing'? Yes? All shot by Alan. Because they're such a fantastic ideas, they look as though anybody could've shot them. The images are so simple and clear you can't imagine done them any other way. But each is the end result of a series of choices. Take a look at the casting contacts from the the 'Pregnant Man' ad, the alternative models look ridiculous, but they didn't on January 21st 1970. Look at the 'Black' sheep ad Alan shot for John Hegarty (and Barbra Nokes), just a bunch of sheep with a black one plonked in the middle? Nope. If shot side-on, they'd blend into each other after the first row and not fill the poster. If shot from above you wouldn't see them in that classic, side-on profile. So Alan used his map reading skills (acquired through Rally driving) to find a steep incline, so that the sheep rose up, filling the poster with graphic sheep profiles, almost like cut outs, but better for being shot for real. Then there's the 'Wolf In Sheeps Clothing'; How hard can it be to fling a sheep's pelt over a wolf? Very, as it turns out. Wolves don't like modelling, so Alan borrowed some sheep pictures from a friend, photographer Adrian Flowers, then comped the two together. In Alan's words, he wasn't a photographer, he was  'an adman with a camera', simply trying to bring the ideas to life. He'd learnt how to do this from his years as a top art director at CPV and CDP, getting to work on a regular basis with photographers like Elliott Erwitt, Duffy and Terrence Donovan. We had a great chat, hope you enjoy it.

Having trained as a photographer Terry went straight into journalism and has worked on titles as varied as Camera Weekly, Amateur Photographer and Professional Photographer. He was part of the team that launched Bright Publishing 13 years ago and was launch editor of Digital Photo Pro, which morphed into Professional Photo a few years back. As the new owner Terry is looking to shake up the title and to introduce lots of fresh ideas and online features, and to kick things off a new website at www.professionalphoto.online has just been launched. In this interview, he chats about his life, career, the industry (magazine and photography) and how he used to play bass in a punk band.  During the interview, as we always do, Terry added the book "Dogs" by Elliott Erwitt to our photographer's libary - you can buy your copy at Abe Books. Our library is growing fast (we order a copy of each of the books mentioned as I have always loved being surrounded by books!) Lately, I've been thinking about our connection to objects and how, at least for some of us, certain objects can represent a specific time in our lives or evoke a particular state of mind or, in the case of artists, inform the type of work we are able to produce. Painters often have a favorite brush or two — I still use a couple that I've had since 1988. Magnum photographer Elliott Erwitt used the same Leica M3 for decades and in 1963 Cormac McCarthy spent $50 on a Lettera 32 Olivetti manual typewriter that he used to write The Road, No Country for Old Men, All the Pretty Horses, and seven other novels. Objects can become more than the raw materials used to create them. They are somehow imbued with hope, with possibility, and something greater than ourselves. On Monday, we were reminded just how much one object can mean to so many.Subscribe: iTunes | Pocket Casts | Overcast | RSSLINKSKenneth Clark's landmark documentary Civilisation is a thirteen part series produced in 1969 for the BBC that looks at the history of Western art, architecture and philosophy since the Dark Ages. Here's a fascinating interview with Martin Gran about what it means to be a holistic designer and the idea of looking beyond aesthetics into the deeper meaning of design and how collaboration often results in stronger work.Vice takes a look at seven photographers who are rewriting street photography's rigid rules through clever shooting techniques, staged scenes, and a variety of digital manipulation.Music in this episode: The Wrong Way (Jahzzar) / CC BY-SA 4.0

The Switch to Manual Guys are back in the saddle with this first episode of 2016. It just so happens that Antonio and Tom were both out of the country and both decided to travel with only one camera and one lens. Antonio brought his trusted Fuji X100T and Tom brought his Canon 5D Mark II with a 40mm f/2.8 pancake-style portrait lens. Listen in to see how restricting themselves in this way forced them both to get creative just a single lens and with the manual controls of the camera. And don't miss the new feature as they both share a quote from a photographer they like and reflect on its meaning. In this episode Tom shares a quote by the great landscape photographer Ansel Adams while Antonio lifts up the urban street shooting master, Elliott Erwitt.  Oh, and some exciting news from Tom! (Apologies for the street noise on Antonio's side. He does live in New York so it's sometimes unavoidable)

Guests: Harvey Wang and Todd Vorenkamp Have you ever shot film? Do you still shoot film? Does it make a difference in your work? Is your work defined by it? This episode of the B&H Photography Podcast addresses an issue that is still at the heart of photography—does the medium you choose affect the way you work and, ultimately, the images you produce? With the recent release of his book, From Darkroom to Daylight, we will talk with photographer Harvey Wang and with writer and photographer Todd Vorenkamp about the differences between shooting film and shooting digital images. From the perspectives of those who grew up shooting film and those who did not, we’ll discuss working process, technological developments, quality of images and yes—nostalgia. Wang will also recount from his book conversations on this subject with legendary photographers such as Eugene Richards, Elliott Erwitt, Sally Mann, and George Tice.

Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. In 1948 he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research. Erwitt traveled in France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France. While in New York, Erwitt met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker, the former head of the Farm Security Administration. Stryker initially hired Erwitt to work for the Standard Oil Company, where he was building up a photographic library for the company, and subsequently commissioned him to undertake a project documenting the city of Pittsburgh. In 1953 Erwitt joined Magnum Photos and worked as a freelance photographer for Collier's, Look, Life, Holiday and other luminaries in that golden period for illustrated magazines. To this day he is for hire and continues to work for a variety of journalistic and commercial outfits. In the late 1960s Erwitt served as Magnum's president for three years. He then turned to film: in the 1970s he produced several noted documentaries and in the 1980s eighteen comedy films for Home Box Office. Erwitt became known for benevolent irony, and for a humanistic sensibility traditional to the spirit of Magnum.  www.elliotterwitt.com http://www.magnumphotos.com/ http://norman.hrc.utexas.edu/erwittdc/ www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com
