Welcome to this month's episode of the P4A Let's Talk Rare podcast by Partners4Acess. Today, Georgie and Owen are joined by their colleagues Aurelija Luko, the CFO, and Darren Callanan, the Global Digital Lead at Partners4Access. Join them as they discuss the recent job cuts in the pharma and biotech industry and the reasons behind them. Aurelia explains that redundancies are not limited to the pharma industry and are influenced by factors like mergers, expiring patents, and macroeconomic instability. Darren adds that high drug development costs and pricing pressures also contribute to layoffs. However, he suggests that companies can use digital tools to enhance efficiency and innovation to address industry challenges. They also discuss a digital launch platform and a social listening tool created by Partners4Access.  Aurelia highlights that companies are looking to increase shareholder value and reduce costs. Darren adds that thanks to the high cost of drug development and downward pressure on prices, companies are forced to narrow their focus and compete in the same space, leading to layoffs.   The conversation then shifts to discuss the digital launch platform created by Partners for Access. Darren explains that the platform streamlines the access and utilization of launch materials, ensuring that affiliates have access to the most up-to-date and compliant versions. This helps overcome the challenge of inconsistent distribution and saves time for the teams.  Darren also mentions another tool called RarePulse, a social listening platform. This tool collects and analyzes data from social media and other sources to provide insights on key opinion leaders, unmet patient needs, and other relevant topics. He emphasizes that social media listening allows for a broader understanding of patient experiences and can help shape primary research and launch strategies. Aurelija Luko Bio: Aurelija's work at P4A includes overseeing all accounting activities, from managing financial risk to setting budgets. Also, to ensure smooth day-to-day finance operations within the business. Aurelija is a Chartered Accountant with 10+ years of experience; she holds an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of Exeter and a BSc in the same field. Before P4A, she worked for small start-ups and big listed companies in healthcare, consulting, and property industries. We explore his tips on finding the perfect boat, including their unique tweaks to float tubes and the significance of internal bladders in all their boats. We also gain valuable insights into the boating industry. Let's jump into the realm of boats, float tubes, and of course, fly fishing from a whole new perspective. Outcast Boats Show Notes with Chris Callanan 03:16 - We did a stillwater event with Phil Rowley, giving away a Fish Cat 4 Float Tube from Outcast. Chris reveals that the Fish Cat 4 is their top-selling float tube because of its good design and materials. And speaking of float tubes, we look back to the '80s and '90s and explore the evolution and notable differences between float tubes of the past and the designs and materials used in today's models. 05:00 - Outcast provides a range of float tube sizes to cater to individuals' varying needs and sizes. They have two models for the bigger guys: the Prowler and the Fish Cat 5 Max. Chris Callanan's Fly Fishing Story 07:00 - Chris grew up in Buffalo, New York. His father was a physician who loved fishing and hunting, so they moved to Idaho, where he and his dad spent their weekends fishing together. 07:53 - Chris had the opportunity to work during the summers as a fishing guide for the Yellowstone Angler, becoming George Anderson's second employee. 09:26 - Today, Chris lives in Idaho and is working for AIRE, with Outcast as the fishing side of the company. AIRE and Outcast Sporting Gear Products  16:47 - Outcast has been in business since 1995. According to Chris, one notable feature of their products is the inclusion of internal bladders. He breaks down the significance of these bladders to safety and simplified repair processes. 22:51 - We discuss frameless boats like the Fish Cat Scout IGS and the OSG Stealth Pro. 24:57 - Phil Rowley is a big fan of the PAC 9000, an exceptional all-around boat offered by Outcast. 27:35 - The PAC 1400 is the top-selling raft frame on the Outcast side. For AIRE, it's the Super Duper Puma. 30:06 - Chris recommends the OSG Clearwater and OSG Commander if you're steelhead fishing. The OSG Commander is more of a kayak-style boat. For Chris, the OSG Clearwater is also an excellent all-around boat. 35:19 - The OSG Striker is one of the staff-favorite. It is a frameless two-person raft that weighs 100 lbs. 39:00 - Besides their boats, Outcast offers a wide range of boating accessories, including fins, oar locks, oar stops, oars, pumps, and more. They also offer durable bags made from leftover boat materials. 39:54 - Chris highly recommends the AIRE 136DD as the perfect boat for longer trips, including full weekends and overnight adventures. 46:59 - We also talk about our stillwater guru, Phil Rowley, who has a long-standing partnership with Outcast. 50:43 - Chris provides a detailed breakdown of the business operations at Outcast. Coffee Talk with Chris  1:00:00 - Chris loves black coffee and admits to being a coffee snob, having lived in Seattle for a while. He also enjoys making his coffee. 1:02:00 - Chris admits to still using the rod George Anderson gave him 40 years ago during his time at the Yellowstone Angler. He uses a 6-wt. rod for everything, a choice that Phil playfully teases him about. 1:03:48 - Chris loves the Smartless and The Rewatchables. Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/466

And so storytelling is a collaborative activity.” - Liam Callanan IN THIS EPISODE “The act of listening is a very powerful one,” begins Liam Callanan in conversation with Sister Julia Walsh as her guest in Episode 57 of the Messy Jesus Business Podcast. Liam is an author, journalist and teacher who declares passion for writing, collaborating, Rome “and … the mess!”   Their conversation encompasses the community and connections that can come to fruition in the collaboration of listening, something he experiences in the celebration of mass in the Catholic Church. “... you're seeing other people lift up their voices and their hearts to God, and that's a powerful expression in community. It's all about sitting in the pew and turning to the person next to you and saying ‘welcome' … a very powerful, active witness for me.” Liam also shares his perception from the contextual container people put him in as a Catholic writer, an identity through which he finds opportunity for welcoming and mutual listening. “There's no box that doesn't have an opening. You just have to unseal it,” says Callanan. ABOUT THE GUEST Liam Callanan is a novelist, journalist and teacher. He is the author of The Cloud Atlas, and his nationally best-selling novel, Paris by the Book, was translated into multiple languages and won the Wisconsin Council of Writers 2019 Edna Ferber Fiction Book Award. He is also the 2017 winner of the George W. Hunt, SJ, Prize, awarded by America Magazine and the St. Thomas More Chapel and Center at Yale University. Liam's work has been published in The Wall Street Journal, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle, and he's recorded numerous essays for public radio. He has taught for the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers, Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and currently is a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Liam lives in Milwaukee with his wife and daughters. His most recent novel, When In Rome, will be published by Penguin Random House in March 2023. Riana LeJeune-Copeland is the owner and creative Mastermind of Repinned LLC. Riana was born in 1982 and was raised by an emergency medical pilot father and a historic restoration expert mother. Having grown up in historic homes, she had a deep appreciation for antiques and great craftsmanship.  Riana moved to Des Moines with her family in 1996, attending Callanan and then Graduating from Roosevelt in 2000. After high school, Riana studied Psychology with minors in Criminal justice and anthropology. During her time at Iowa State University, she volunteered at a local women's shelter and headed up the Student Officer Program at ISU PD. After graduating with her BA in Psychology she pursued a career in law enforcement. However, destiny had different plans for Riana. Injury at the age of 24 would take her in a different direction.  After leaving law enforcement she took several office jobs but it just wasn't a good fit. She longed for something more. After her daughter was born in 2011, Riana took a part-time with a company that made skydiving jumpsuits for skydivers all over the world. It was at Firefly Unlimited she worked alongside her first real-life entrepreneur/female business owner. A true inspiration. Sitting taking jumpsuits apart for alteration, something in her brain clicked and she began viewing things differently.  If you can take something apart, you can learn to put it back together. She soon decided to apply this to furniture and her side gig, something she called "Repinned" and the rest is history. When Riana couldn't find an upholstery school in Iowa, she sought out mentors worldwide to learn from. Repinned is thriving and growing under her leadership, knowledge,  skilled hands, and passion. Repinned is currently one of the select few businesses offering professional custom upholstery in central Iowa. Riana recognized the need for this skilled trade/art form and continues to innovate while revitalizing the industry. Alex is an apprentice in the Repinned workroom, and she is excited to dive into the skilled trades. She has had a lifelong obsession with vintage furniture and interior design, and she is passionate about creating things with her own two hands. A recent graduate, she is looking forward to a career in the upholstery industry and is excited to be crafting custom pieces and learning from the best! This week, we're talking about investing in the creative economy from two perspectives. First, we get an overview of the issues from Laura Callanan. She's the founding partner of Upstart Co-Lab,  an organization which works to connect impact investing to the creative economy.  With global partners from the UK and Argentina, Upstart Co-Lab co-published a report about this--Creativity, Culture & Capital: Impact investing in the global creative economy brings together some 40 essays from organizations from around the world that support impact investing in creative industries. In the podcast, Callanan explains what's meant by the creative economy and impact investing, and how they contribute to a thriving culture and economy. She always shares what the United States might learn from the work done in this area by other countries. Then, we burrow down and look at investing in the creative economy from a local perspective by looking at the work done in Atlanta, Georgia, with Sheoyki Jones. Sheoyki Jones is the founding program manager of Creative Industries, an initiative of Invest Atlanta.  (She also contributed an essay to the Creativity Culture & Capital report called “The Creative Industries: Driving Economic Opportunity in Atlanta.”) Jones talks with me about the programs that Creative Industries began that support Atlanta's creative workers. She discusses the importance of genuine outreach to creative workers and also shares some of the challenges and best practices in designing programs that invest in and support local creative communities.

Many of America's art museums have been the target of blunt criticism for over a year, first for accepting funds derived from pharmaceutical manufacturers, fossil fuel companies, and arms merchants, and more recently for employment practices disadvantageous to people of color. While there is no single remedy for alleged shortcomings in governance and management, one option is available for these institutions to align their practices with stated values. An estimated $58 billion is under the management of cultural institutions in the United States. The founder of Upstart Co-Lab, Laura Callanan, joins the podcast, offering concrete advice on how mission-aligned investing can set cultural organizations onto a better path, putting their resources to work in furtherance of progressive goals, while not sacrificing financial return.
