In 2020, Lindsay Holden, alongside her Co-Founders Britta Chatterjee and Shannon Kearney, set out to disrupt the haircare space with the launch of their clean, inclusive, and salon-grade haircare brand, Odele. Derived from the Norwegian phrase for “to share,” Odele can be used by anyone who shares a shower, regardless of age or gender. Despite launching amid a global pandemic, the company reached profitability in the first six months of business, and today, the line is on shelves at CVS, Ulta, and Target. But before getting Odele on major retailer shelves, Lindsay worked on the other side: she spent eight years working at Target in various buyer and merchandising manager roles within the domestics and home department, learning what makes a great product. It feels like every day there’s something new to be outraged about, or a new piece of information about something that is already outrageous. But how can those feelings of outrage be used productively to create real change? Global social innovation leader Steve Davis believes he has the answer. In order to provide guidance on harnessing our outrage, Davis joined us in conversation with author and global health advocate Chelsea Clinton to discuss the ideas shared in his book Undercurrents: Channeling Outrage to Spark Practical Activism. He identified five global undercurrents with outsized importance that are shaping our world: our global economies are structurally changing, the role of communities in social change is morphing, equity is reshaping activism, the impact of digital disruption is more extensive, and the perception of social change as attractive is emerging. With unique insight, he shared stories, experiences, data, and observations from across the globe. Davis invited us to a conversation that is perfect for activists and the intellectually curious alike who are interested in increasing their understanding of the changing world around them—and in instigating and encouraging that change. Steve Davis is a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and is a senior strategic advisor and interim director, China Country Office, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He serves as co-chair of the World Health Organization’s Digital Health Technical Advisory Group and is a member of numerous boards and advisory committees. He is the former president and CEO of PATH, a leading global health innovation organization; former Director of Social Innovation at McKinsey & Company; and former CEO of Corbis. Chelsea Clinton is the vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, where she works alongside Foundation leadership and partners to help create economic opportunity, improve public health, and inspire civic engagement and service across the United States and around the world. It’s easy to get lost in the ‘doom and gloom’ that we are faced with every time we pick up our phones or turn on the news. Many Americans are feeling a sense of outrage when faced with the global pandemic, the #BLM movement, #LGBTQIA rights, income inequality and gender inequality, and so much more. But it is possible to turn this outrage and frustration into activism that can lead to systemic change. Steve Davis and I sit down to discuss exactly this and his newly released book, "Undercurrents: Channeling Outrage to Spark Practical Action".  The interview (and his book) is filled with real-life examples and activists from his 40+ years in the field of activism, showing how global citizens have harnessed their outrage to effect change. He discusses that anyone can find a way to be a practical activist – to find undercurrents that matter to them.  Steve Davis is currently a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He serves as co-chair of the World Health Organization’s Digital Health Technical Advisory Group and is a member of numerous boards and advisory committees. He is the former president & CEO of PATH, a leading global health innovation organization; former Director of Social Innovation at McKinsey & Company, a global consultancy; and former CEO of Corbis. This episode is incredibly inspiring and will leave you ready to take positive action! More or Less: Behind the Stats

Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter, Chair of the Winton Centre for Risk and Evidence Communication, puts the risks of Covid-19 into perspective. He found that the proportion of people who get infected by coronavirus, who then go on to die increases with age, and the trend matches almost exactly how our background mortality risk also goes up. Catching the disease could be like packing a year’s worth of risk into a couple of weeks. (Mathematician and Risk guru, Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter at the University of Cambridge. Funding For Your FilmWhat bigger question does the documentary filmmaker have than ‘Where can I find funding for my film?' ? Well, today's documentary industry guest is writer and film funding guru, http://www.warshawski.com/ (Morrie Warshawski). Morrie wrote the well-known (and well read!) book on creative, practical, and (dare I say?) fun ways of funding your documentary film, https://amzn.to/2HQu3G4 (Shaking the Money Tree: The Art of Getting Grants and Donations for Film and Video Projects).   So much inspiring and practical advice to be had in this podcast! Among other topics discussed, are the importance of having the triad of a mission statement, core values, and vision. Morrie's infamous https://amzn.to/2Hi8fSJ (house fundraising party) and the topics of how/why you need a http://grantspace.org/tools/knowledge-base/Individual-Grantseekers/Fiscal-Sponsorship/fiscal-sponsorship (fiscal sponsor) for your project are just a few of the topics covered!   (Photo credit: Picking From The Money Tree — Image by © Images.com/Corbis)   Related Resources   https://amzn.to/2HQu3G4 () We highly recommend grabbing a copy of Morrie's book https://amzn.to/2HQu3G4 (Shaking the Money Tree).
