Today I am joined by Catherine Casalino to talk about the life and work of the incredible graphic designer and artist, Barbara Kruger. From her graphic design background, how that influenced her art, to the meaning and impact of her collaged artwork. We even dive into the ironic cycle of her regurgitated work being regurgitated by the skateboard brand, Supreme, and their head-scratching lawsuit story.____Barbara Kruger was born in 1945 in Newark, New Jersey. Kruger briefly attended Syracuse University, then Parsons School of Design in New York City, where she studied with artists and photographers Marvin Israel and Diane Arbus. Kruger worked in graphic design for Condé Nast Publications at Mademoiselle magazine, and was promoted to head designer within a year, at the age of twenty-two. Kruger has described her time in graphic design as “the biggest influence on my work…[it] became, with a few adjustments, my ‘work' as an artist.”In the early 1970s, Kruger started showing artwork in galleries in New York. At the time, she was mainly working in weaving and painting. However, she felt that her artwork lacked meaning, and in 1976, she quit creating art entirely for a year. She took a series of teaching positions, including at University of California, Berkeley. When she began making art again in 1977, she had moved away from her earlier style into photo and text collages. In 1979, Kruger developed her signature style using large-scale black-and-white images overlaid with text. She repurposed found images, juxtaposing them with short, pithy phrases printed in Futura Bold or Helvetica Extra Bold typeface in black, white, or red text bars. In addition to creating text and photographic works, Kruger has produced video and audio works, written criticism, taught classes, curated exhibitions, designed products, such as T-shirts and mugs, and developed public projects, such as billboards, bus wraps, and architectural interventions.Kruger addresses media and politics in their native tongue: sensational, authoritative, and direct. Personal pronouns like “you” and “I” are staples of Kruger's practice, bringing the viewer into each piece. “Direct address has motored my work from the very beginning,” Kruger said. “I like it because it cuts through the grease.” Kruger's work prompts us to interrogate our own positions; in the artist's words, “to question and change the systems that contain us.” She demands that we consider how our identities are formed within culture, through representation in language and image.______Thank you Catherine for joining me!catherinecasalino.com@cat.casalino Catherine Casalino is the principal and creative director of Casalino Design, an independent design company in New York City, focusing on book design and branding.Prior to founding Casalino Design in 2016, Catherine worked in-house as an art director and designer at Simon & Schuster, Random House, and Hachette Book Group, and she began her career at Rodrigo Corral Design.Over the past two decades, Catherine's work has been recognized by numerous international design organizations and publications. Jetzt hier in TOMorrow. Für Ihre Abschlussarbeit „We are all able to pleasure. Dies zeigt sich besonders in ihrer Abschlussarbeit: „We are all able to pleasure. Im nächsten Schritt möchte sie „We are pleasurable.“ publizieren.

Lauren Hom is a California-born designer, illustrator & hand lettering artist with a 250k strong following on Instagram. She is known for her use of bright colour palettes & playful letterings and has worked for clients such as Starbucks, YouTube, TIME Magazine, Google and AT&T. She has also been recognised by Communications Arts, the Art Directors Club, the One Club, the Type Directors Club and the Webby Awards. But how did it all start? As with all STIMY episodes, we start from the very beginning: with Lauren's childhood & how she ended up studying at the School of Visual Arts for, of all courses, advertising! While there, she met influential figures who had a deep influence on her decision to become a freelance artist. Turns out, being the junior director of a big ad agency in New York wasn't the dream job she'd thought it would be!  Lauren also peels back the layers on some of her most popular passion projects, beginning with Daily Dishonesty - which landed her a book deal upon graduation! That proved pivotal, as it gave her a financial cushion to launch a freelance career. Three things stood out with Lauren's life story:her talent in lettering;her ability to use passion projects to change the trajectory of her freelance career, repeatedly; andher willingness to be open about how she executes her projects, markets them and what she earns! And finally, why she is now going on a sabbatical and entering culinary school. If you've ever been curious about the business side of an artist's career, then this is the episode for you.Highlights4:58 Work hard, snack hard5:38 Doing advertising11:40 Becoming a Junior Art Director in a big New York city ad firm13:36 Daily Dishonesty16:52 Seeing Daily Dishonesty go viral18:51 Getting an illustration agent20:14 Knowing when to say no to a client22:59 Planning to go freelance24:17 Earning $100,000 by Year 3 of freelancing25:12 Growing an audience on Instagram28:27 “Will Letter for Lunch” side project31:28 Getting clients like Microsoft & LinkedIn in less than 1 year34:12 Flour Crown & Peen Cuisine39:30 Traveling 1.5 years around the world40:47 Being inspired more by every day life44:35 Taking Back Sunday46:36 Taking a creative sabbatical to go to culinary school54:48 Would Lauren ever do street art?

Highlights from the conversationI think Wrapped is a magical project because it's one of the only marketing projects where you have millions of people sharing their own experience of the year through the share cardStart with guiding principles – What does your brand stand for? What are you trying to do? How does that come to life? That's part of the magic of Wrapped – you release it to the world and then it just kind of takes its own life.We have this lens where we don't really talk about Spotify. We don't say ‘we're great, we have millions of songs'. We tell stories, and majority of the stories we tell are through the lens of what's happeningThe brand is always, in one way or another, echoing the sentiment of the company and its foundersSimple, graphic, colorful became three fundamentally important words that we could apply to all of the design work we were doing More about Rasmus Wängelin Originally from Sweden, Rasmus is a New York based designer & director currently working as Global Head of Brand Design at Spotify. “You have to see this.” That's the message I see alongside a link sent to me by a friend. “Umm… I'm kind of busy, you know? I'm in the middle of things, working and I don't have time for links.” I fire back. He insists, “No, you really need to see this.” So I open up the link and see... an inkblot. An inkblot?!? Big deal! Then he tells me to play the video, and I do. I find myself completely enthralled as this inkblot suddenly becomes a creature that turns into an adorable monster. Oh, and the artist creating it is drawing it upside-down and backward! From white pages to inkblots to monsters, this art comes to life before my eyes. And each monster clearly has its own story behind it. I have to know who the artist is. I want to talk to him and find out everything I can because anyone with the talent to turn inkblots into monsters has won me over. How do you organically create something from nothing like that? Find out in this episode as I sit down with that incredible artist, Stefan G. Bucher. We discuss why starting your story in the middle helps you overcome resistance and why doing things for yourself without an audience might be the better way for you to go. You'll also hear about the role of storytelling in highlighting the common experience, how you can do things to feel less alone in the world, and Stefan's incredibly amusing technique to help you uplevel your storytelling game. What you will learn in this episode: Why your task is to find something, not create something Why connection is such an essential part of great storytelling How different mediums can unlock new ways to approach storytelling Who is Stefan? Stefan G. Bucher is a writer, graphic designer, illustrator, and all-around bookaholic. Born in Germany, he came to California and studied at the Art Center College of Design. His first introduction to book design happened as a child when he poured over the catalogs of the Wilhelm Busch Museum in Hannover. That early access began a lifelong journey to design and produce books in the same delightful and fascinating fashion that those early catalogs did for him. Stefan has received rewards, features, and recognition from design books and magazines and prestigious institutions in the literary world. He won the Yellow Pencil Award for Book Design from British Design and the Art Direction and the Art Directors Club of New York. Numerous book design exhibitions have featured his work such as those hosted by the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Minneapolis' Walker Art Center, and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. Stefan's most popular work, however, is the online animation series Daily Monster where he filmed himself drawing a new monster from random inkblots for 100 days. This series has enjoyed millions of views and downloads and inclusion in the Communication Arts Illustration and American Illustration annuals, and even new life in book form. In addition, he has worked with a wide range of entertainment, advertising, educational, and institutional clients and collaborated on projects with big names like Sting, director Tarsem, and The New York Times. Highlights from the conversation:Since it's a living organism, a brand can behave really well if it's managed well. But it can also misbehave. There's also no such thing as a perfect brandIn the industry, we hand out brand manuals and they're sometimes treated as the Bible that the in-house design team has to conform to, but I actually don't see style guide that way – I see style guide as parameters[On research] What I want to do is get down to the very bottom of it. What is this thing? What is this subject? What is this topic? And a lot of times these projects came to us as something that is so alien that we [asked] – are we really qualified to do this? The total body of the work doesn't have a singular style to it. But rather, we always design very contextually, very specifically. But within that specific context, we want to be as creative and as expressive as possibleI think that's a fascinating way of thinking about our craft. That part of it is creating the visual, but part of it is also convincing human beings to understand, to make the leap, or to communicateI think sometimes clients hold the designers at an arm's length. They don't necessarily let them into the building. They don't let them see the bad stuff or, you know, actually understand how things work More about Natasha Jen Natasha Jen is an award-winning designer, an educator, and a partner at Pentagram. Many of you won't recognise that name. You won't find it attached to tweets his latest ‘hot' campaign, or next to a picture of his latest lunch; he doesn't do social media. You won't find his agency in any new business tables; they only handle three clients at a time, so tend to have long client relationships. You won't find their scripts in any production companies; they direct them in-house. This is because, when, 23 years ago, the goal for his new agency was that the clients should be in the limelight, not the agency. While I've heard many say that kind of thing, I've never seen anyone actually do it. They gave themselves an undercover name; The Kowloon Wholesale Seafood Co. Then disguised the outside of the agency like a run-down seafood operation, just to throw off any potential clients who happen to be in the area. And just to be awkward, he changed his name from Dick to Rick Sittig. You won't find either of them in any of advertising's Hall of Fame's. Which is weird. Because between them they've done some of the best, most famous, longest running ad campaigns ever. Jack In The Box, Joe Isuzu, the Energiser Bunny and the Nissan Pathfinder campaign to name but a few. So at the risk annoying Rick by bringing on some unwanted adulation – if anyone out there works for the One Show, Art Directors Club or Clios; come on, induct this man immediately. It's embarrassing. Highlights from the conversation:A brand is an organism composed of hundreds of elements, logos, copywriting, photography, colours, and of course, typographyBig companies spend millions of dollars on their fucking brand. Why can't they spend a little bit more money to make sure they have a font that is recognisable? They don't even have to say anything. They just have to put type on a page and people would immediately recognise the brand It's very difficult to maintain what's good about the brandThey're rooted in this idea of being digital-friendly but they're falling in line with everybody elseIf you spend $250,000 for a photo campaign, that gets used for one season. If you spend the same amount for a font that you use for 20 years, the cost is negligible More about MatteoMatteo Bologna is the Founder and Creative Director of New York-based branding studio Mucca, a singular personality whose multidisciplinary background in architecture, graphic design, illustration, and typography has helped him build one of the most respected companies in design. Over his celebrated career, Matteo's focused but fun-loving approach has earned strong client partnerships across countless industries, from startups, small retailers and beauty powerhouses to hospitality where he has designed for various renowned hotels and restaurants.

I’m so excited to introduce to you a creative thought leader who I’ve not only admired for the past decade, but is someone I’ve learned a lot from in the space of living bravely and creating boldly. He is a Designer, Author and Teacher, his philosophy is to “begin before your ready”. It’s helped him work for global brands like Adobe, MailChimp, Time, Moet & Chandon and The City of New York. To him, braveness is the key to creativity – and we unpack a lot of that in the interview.   His work has been exhibited twice at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is represented in permanent museum collections worldwide including the Louvre in Paris. Awards to his name include an Emmy, a gold and silver medal from the Art Directors Club, and a Grand Prix from the Brno Biennale. It’s now his mission to teach people like you and I how to illuminate our individual gifts in order to find clarity and purpose. Some of the topics we spoke about include: What to do when you’re in a creative slump Ways to address any fears that hold you back How to be your unapologetic self And the need for more people to push and challenge. So if you’re in a creative block, or looking to amplify what you’ve created, then this is for you – as we uncover what it takes to live a creative and fulfilling life. His research, focused primarily on the subject of advertising creativity, has appeared in the Journal of Advertising, Psychology and Marketing, the Journal of Interactive Advertising and the Journal of Advertising Education, among other publications. He has also written for Campaign (UK) and HOW magazines. In September 2010, his co-authored book, The Creative Process Illustrated: How Advertising’s Big Ideas Are Born (with Deborah Morrison), was published and became a top 10 best-selling book on advertising creativity. Dr. Griffin’s students’ work has been featured in both national and international press, including Advertising Age, Adweek, Archive and CMYK magazines and recognized by The One Club, the Art Directors Club and the Clio Awards, among other organizations. In 2015, he was honored to receive the Donald G. Hileman Educator of the Year award from the American Advertising Federation’s 7th District. He has been invited to speak about the creative process and the power of ideas at events such as the SXSW Interactive and EDU Festivals, the HOW Design Conference and in consultation with a variety of corporate and academic organizations. Top Takeaways: The idea of “rounding up” is how brands can do business while also doing good. Millennials and Gen X go out of their way to do business with brands that include doing good as part of their business model. This is a huge untapped opportunity for water utilities. Doing good has to become a part of modern branding and it has to be authentic. It can’t be lip service. Branding isn’t a logo, a tagline, or something only relevant to consumer products. A brand is your face to your audience, and we all have a face. You don’t have to be Coca Cola, you just have to be relevant to your customers and having water and wastewater service is pretty relevant to the lives of customers. There are three phases to brand reputation. Attention generation—telling your audience who you are, what you do, and what you’re about. This is the beginning of your brand’s life cycle. You should leave this stage as soon as you can when you recognize that your audience knows who you are and what you care about. If you find yourself stuck here, you may be doing something wrong. Uncertainty reduction—reminding your audience who you are. Repeat, reiterate, delve into specifics. Maintain certainty and assurance. Most brands spend their lives in this phase. Transcendence—brands in this phase have an audience so confident about who they are they can use their brand power to explore other related issues or areas i.e. Stella Artois partnering with water.org to help the global water crisis. Some strategies for each phase: Attention generation is an ideal time to use traditional advertising. Once brands move on to uncertainty reduction, brands should be proactive and not reactive. If the only time the communication team springs into action is to put out fires or deal with disruptions, you’re doing it wrong. Proactive work will soften the blow because you’ve built trust with your audience and they will give you the benefit of the doubt. Brands in the transcendence phase can use their power to solicit help or gain partners to engage in social causes. Established brands should shift the mindset from having to defend the brand to proactively advocating for the brand. The idea of rounding up is only successful if both sides of the partnership benefit. Hiring consultants or agencies can help organizations from becoming myopic. Many utilities are...

He has been invited to speak about the creative process and the power of ideas at events such as the SXSW Interactive and EDU Festivals, the HOW Design Conference and in consultation with a variety of corporate and academic organizations. Top Takeaways: Creativity isn’t magic. The superstition around it divides us. Everything we know about creativity through science and research shows that every human being with a normally functioning brain is a creative being. Creativity is purpose driven. An idea is only creative if it is useful and useful to more than one person. The goal is to push humanity forward. Everything weird and or different is not necessarily creative. Understanding the way our minds work as individuals allows us to make our minds work better and more efficiently. If you’re paid to think for a living it’s best to know how to put your brain in gear and on the right setting so you can be as productive as possible. Creative Process Dimensions: Identity—Which one are you? Explorer—draws inspiration from everything around them. Collaborator—likes brainstorming in a team. Appreciates the synergy working with different expertise and perspectives around the table. Believers—would rather not over analyze the process and risk compromising it. The process must be protected. Executors—they have a plan and trust the process. Seekers—enjoy the hunt. No stone is left unturned. Dimension: Experience—How does it influence the creative process? Builds confidence Offers perspective Acknowledges reality Promotes sharing Dimension: Rhythm—How does the work move forward and get done? Step by step—the process unfolds in a series of steps. Waiting, persisting, persevering—the process, although slow and tedious, continues until a solution is found. Often the rule rather than the exception. Coping with fear and doubt—developing a plan to overcome the fear and doubt that inevitable strike every creative. Channeling the inner voice that says, “You can do this.” (Not) watching the clock—a part of the business. Time is always a factor. The goal is to do the best work in the time allotted. Dimension: Values—What are some of the guiding principles? Quality ideas come from large quantities of ideas—your first idea is not the best. Your best idea is buried in a stack of 900. It’s important to ask questions—stay curious. Challenge the conventional wisdom. Creativity is an act of rebellion—a part of the creative soul. New ideas challenge the status quo. They can make people uncomfortable. They require bravery. A proper work environment is important for creativity—create in...

The Trauma Therapist | Podcast with Guy Macpherson, PhD | Inspiring interviews with thought-leaders in the field of trauma.

Today, The Trauma Therapist | Podcast shifts a bit. Today I’m interviewing world-renowned designer Debbie Millman who shares her story of courage, healing, and hope. I first heard Debbie on Tim Ferriss’ podcast and was struck by her candor, strength, and vulnerability. She was on Tim’s show to speak about her illustrious design career. However, at a specific point in the interview, the tone definitely changed when Debbie began sharing the story of her childhood. It was at that point that I was drawn in by the courage with which Debbie spoke about her past, her journey, and the hope she’s hung on to all these years. My hope is that we all can not only learn from her experience but as trauma workers, be inspired by the strength and hope in her words. Debbie Millman was named “one of the most influential designers working today” by Graphic Design USA, Debbie Millman is also an author, educator, brand strategist and host of the podcast Design Matters. As the founder and host of Design Matters, the first and longest running podcast about design, Millman has interviewed nearly 300 design luminaries and cultural commentators, including Massimo Vignelli, Milton Glaser, Malcolm Gladwell, Dan Pink, Barbara Kruger, Seth Godin and more. In the 11 years since its inception, the show has garnered over a million downloads per year, a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and—most recently—iTunes designated it one of the best podcasts of 2015.  Debbie’s written and visual essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Print Magazine, Design Observer and Fast Company. She is the author of two books of illustrated essays: Look Both Ways and Self-Portrait As Your Traitor; the latter of which has been awarded a Gold Mobius, a Print Typography Award, and a medal from the Art Directors Club. Her artwork has been exhibited at the Boston Biennale, Chicago Design Museum, Anderson University, School of Visual Arts, Long Island University, The Wolfsonion Museum and the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art.  Debbie is the author of six books, including two collections of interviews that have extended the ethos and editorial vision of Design Matters to the printed page: How to Think Like a Great Graphic Designer and Brand Thinking and Other Noble Pursuits. Both books have been published in over 10 languages. For 20 years, Debbie was the President of the design division at Sterling Brands, where she worked with over 200 of the world’s largest brands, including the redesign of Burger King, merchandising for Star Wars and the positioning and branding of the No More movement. She is also President Emeritus of AIGA, one of five women to hold the position in the organization’s 100-year history and a past board member and treasurer of the New York Chapter. Currently, Debbie is the Editorial and Creative Director of Print Magazine, the oldest magazine about design in the United States, and a board member of actor and activist Mariska Hargitay’s Joyful Heart Foundation, Legendary Performance Space 122 and the venerable Type Directors Club.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-trauma-therapist-podcast-with-guy-macpherson-phd-inspiring-interviews-with-thought-leaders-in-the-field-of-trauma/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
