Carol Merchasin brings her deep legal experience to McAllister Olivarius, heading up cases involving sexual misconduct in religious, faith-based, and spiritual communities. As an investigator, she has worked to uncover sexual misconduct within the Shambhala International lineage of Buddhism, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers, and is currently assisting other spiritual communities in bringing allegations of sexual misconduct to light. She has worked with survivors of abuse and misconduct across a number of global spiritual and religious movements and has extensive experience as both a litigator and an investigator. Before joining McAllister Olivarius, Carol was a partner in the Philadelphia office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius where she was a member of the firm's employment law practice and the director of Morgan Lewis Resources, providing training on harassment and discrimination as well as investigation services for clients. She has conducted dozens of workplace investigations and taught investigative techniques to human resource professionals at many Fortune 50 companies. She is based in New Jersey and is registered as an attorney with the Massachusetts Bar. In this highly informative and insightful conversation, Carol details some of the promising progress of the legal system here in the US and abroad with regard to prosecuting sexual abuse in spiritual communities. She and Rachel also discuss the many obstacles survivors face in the courtroom and the disappointing failures of the current justice system. Favorite quotes of the episode: “We’ve lost the ways of living that were based on these deep human elemental wisdom, and we’ve almost veered away from that basic wisdom so far that we’ve gone into toxic beliefs.” “We can see really clearly the interconnectedness from looking at the natural world how everything is connected.” “How do we create a workplace that’s of benefit to everyone in the workplace?” “What would it look like in your life to slow down? [Ten years ago,] I wish I knew that slowing down would bring me more joy.” “And that’s what I want to teach people, that slowing down doesn’t mean that what you are doing has to fall apart, in fact, it just makes it better.” Episode Overview In this episode, I talk with Aarti Tejuja.  She is a mind/body healer, spiritual activist and coach, meditation and embodiment teacher, contemplative art instructor, student of the Buddism, and a sacred space holder/facilitator. Aarti has also been a community organizer, youth mentor, and advocate for those impacted by the justice system.  Aarti worked for the Shambhala organization from 2007-2019, her last role being the Director of Social Engagement for Shambhala International.  Aarti currently co-owns a business, Joyful Ground which helps organizations create businesses of integrity by helping them develop cultures of authenticity through healing dynamics of race, gender, sexual orientation, classism, casteism, ableism, power dynamics, and hierarchy. In this work, Aarti uses the methods of art of hosting, interplay, ancestral healing, mindfulness, and peace circles. She has also successfully developed and facilitated meditation and peace circle restorative justice trainings for non-profits, businesses, and youth in schools throughout Chicagoland.   Aarti lives with her partner, Matt Lentz, and two cats Buttercup and Fiona. TOPICS Friendship & Interconnectedness “The Scarf Story” Shared Values of Humanity Dreaming in a Dying World What is Mindfulness? 5 Questions Segment Q1. We know that the most successful and happy people have a morning routine, what do you do each morning or evening that sets your day up for success? I usually have a coffee, then I feed the cats and then we all go outside together. I have this very wonderful garden, so we go outside and say hello to the garden and greet the morning, and then I do a little bit of writing every morning. Q2. What's your definition of Success? Finding balance. So much of this year has been figuring out how do I do want I want to do in the world, take care of myself, and live fully in my own humanity. Q3. What's your definition of Happiness? To really be deeply connected to the core of my humanity, to be fully present in my body, and to see others in that way. To see the beauty in others and the love in other beings, and to recognize and see nature for what it is. Q4. What do you know now that you wish you would have known 10 years ago? I wish I knew that slowing down would bring me more joy. Q5. What do you think is the biggest issue facing busy professionals today? Speediness! Slowing Down! The going, going, going is causing all of these things, people are tired, they are depressed and they are angry at home and it’s not working. So many people who are really speedy, aren’t really, really happy.  RESOURCES Connect with Aarti and Joyful Ground at: Website: https://www.joyfulground.com Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/joyfulground Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/joyful_ground/ LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/company/joyfulground Join our email list and never miss another insight at https://www.pawsconsulting.com/shownotes Learn Strategies for Overcoming Overwhelm at https://www.pawsconsulting.com/overwhelm   “This program has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit for veterinarians and veterinary nurses/technicians in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.” Sign up for a free Strategy Session to overcome overwhelm and get unstuck at https://www.pawsconsulting.com/podcast  Connect with Angela at www.pawsconsulting.com or on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram @DemareeDVM. The Shambhala Sun says of this week's guest: “Rev. Danny Fisher calls himself ‘just a Buddhist minister trying to benefit beings.' Clearly, it's something he does well.” Let's Talk About It assistant producer Jesse Tanner will assist Dr. Tom in this episode as they interview one of Jesse's former professors. Rev. Danny Fisher, M.Div., D.B.S. (Cand.), is an ordained Buddhist lay minister and coordinator of the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program at University of the West (UWest), where he also serves as a teaching professor. Prior to UWest, Danny was adjunct faculty for Antioch Education Abroad's Buddhist Studies in India program. He earned his bachelor's degree in religion from Denison University, Master of Divinity from Naropa University, and is currently finishing his doctorate in Buddhist Studies at UWest. Professor Fisher is certified as a mindfulness meditation instructor by Naropa University in association with Shambhala International, serves on the advisory council for the Upaya Buddhist Chaplaincy Program, and in 2009 became the first-ever Buddhist member of the National Association of College and University Chaplains.
