Dr Mary Travelbest Guide
Seoul, South Korea and travel insurance comparisons

Dr Mary Travelbest Guide

Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available.     2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News     3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan.     4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads     5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov     6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation).     How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging.  To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either.   If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com   See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is:  South Korea  I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong.   For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies.   I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists.   Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are.   Resources Roundup   If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip.   When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

All teams face the grind, the mundane, even the doldrums, throughout the course of their time together. How can coaches keep spirits up, and "even make the mundane sacred?” Coach Jackson and Professor Miller discussed: The responsibility that players have for playing. The coach can bring some fun and joy to the season. Times of the season that can become a drag. Giving out books to players.  Giving players a “shield.” “Name your hero. Who motivated you? Favorite music?…” The “bulls-eye.” “What's your relationship to the team? Where do you fit on the team? Using the bulls-eye as a discussion point. “Why did you place yourself outside of the circle?” Getting a personal relationship with the players. Collected silly fines as winnings for shooting games. Fun and competition. “It changes up the day or gives them some little incentive... just something different." Had rookies read "20 principles of good behavior.” Then got to know players' reading levels and gave other books. Formal meditation session before videos. George Mumford assessing, “How are we doing as a group (in relation to the mid-line)?” Conversation starter. Get to know lives of teammates. Relating the 8-fold principles of Buddism to the offense. Inserting comedian clips into the video. Bring humor into it. Theme videos for particular opponents. Drawing from certain movies, etc.  Having players grit their teeth on pencils to demonstrate aggression. Led to laughter. Tai Chi in front of big mirrors. Be willing to try new things! Seeing an eagle fly by. “Be patient with me, because I'm going to try different stuff.” Giving players Sundays off. “It's a day for you family. A day for your spiritual recovery.” Working closely with trainers to gauge players' recovery and readiness. How to handle long lay-offs and keep players fresh. The Thanksgiving practice routine: Turkey Trot game. Keeping things fresh and fun. Using symbolism: “The Way of the Warrior,” “The Chase for the White Buffalo” Shields, arrows, prayer arrow, headdress all in the team meeting room. What is your space? How do you respond when someone comes into your space? Retaliation? Fight mode? Being centered. Rubber band snap for re-centering. Knowing Awareness Training (KAT). Players were having difficulty learning.  A simple touch to a player to re-center him, relax him. “I liked finding things that were unique… out of the ordinary. It was kind of experimental.”

Hall's “The Wisdom of the Knowing Ones: Gnosticism, the Key to Esoteric Christianity.” In this episode, we'll be reading chapter two, “Parallels Between Eastern and Western Philosophy.” What you'll learn: · The detailed process of how different religions and philosophies come into existence, unfold their teachings, attain their maximum sphere of influence, and then either diminish or fade away· When did Greek religion (Hellenism) as a religion and philosophy die off?· The connection between Syrian and Egyptian Gnosis and the development of early Christian sects like the Essenes and Nazarenes· The beginning phases of Buddism and how the core teachings became corrupted and too severe over time (similar to what happened with the Catholic church)· How mystic traditions (Sufism, Taoism, Gnosticism, Essenes) came in to fill the void left by major religions of Buddism, Hinduism, Islam and Orthodox Christianity· The story of Nagarjuna, often referred to as “The Second Buddha” by Tibetan and East Asian Mahayana (Great Vehicle) traditions of Buddhism· The three main ways that both Eastern and Western Mystic schools believe one can attain higher levels of spiritual knowledge and initiation (enlightenment)· The strong parallels between mystical Christianity and Eastern mysticism· The meaning of Prajnaparamita (“Mother of all the Buddhas”) in Buddhism and her connection to “Sophia, Virgin of the World” in Gnostic tradition· The use of mantras (repeated sound patterns” in early Eastern and Western esoteric traditions ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Manly Palmer Hall was a Canadian author, lecturer, astrologer, mystic, and Freemason. Over his 70-year career he gave thousands of lectures and published over 150 volumes of written work. Early in his life, he became drawn to mysticism, esoteric philosophies, and their underlying principles. While visiting London in the early 1930s, Hall acquired from an auction agent at Sotheby's, a substantial collection of rare books and manuscripts about alchemy and esotericism. Owing to economic conditions resulting from the Great Depression, he acquired the collection for an insanely low price due to the economic circumstances of the time. Inhale... While Plato's works are so influential that the project of Western philosophy is sometimes described as footnotes to Plato, his discussion of enantiodromia is not part of our standard Western worldview. To the extent that the principle of enantiodromia exists, it matters individually, it matters for choosing the right public policy and it matters for AI safety. Enantiodromia in Jewish college admissions One practical example of enantiodromia is a public policy with the goal of creating racial equality. In the 20th century, elite universities found that they admitted a higher proportion of Jewish people than people of other backgrounds. They were admitting more Jewish people because Jewish people scored on average higher than non-Jewish people. To cut down the number of Jewish admissions they thought up a clever way where they added subjective character judgments as an admission criterion which allowed them to cut down the percentage of Jewish admission. In a world where the performance of a lawyer or doctor correlates with their SAT score if the SAT score is the only thing that matters for admissions, whether or not a lawyer or doctor is Jewish is not going to correlate strongly with their SAT scores. Once you have a policy, where Jewish people need a higher SAT score to be accepted, the Jewish lawyers and doctors will on average have a higher SAT score and thus higher competency. This competency difference in turn reinforces stereotypes. In a world, where the admission criteria result in Jewish lawyers being on average more competent than non-Jewish lawyers the stereotype of Jewish lawyers being more competent is justified. A smart person who seeks a competent lawyer has an easier time determining whether the last name of the lawyer sounds Jewish than determining the SAT score of the lawyer. In the end, the policy to create equality between Jewish people and non-Jewish created stereotypes about how Jewish people are unequal. This is enantiodromia. Given that the dynamic of enantiodromia does not exist in the public consciousness it's very hard to talk about enantiodromia plays out with modern social justice policies, so it's left as an exercise for the reader to think through the details. Play Episode Play 30 sec Highlight Listen Later Jul 11, 2022 64:38

Our message to share with you today is that there is a middle path that can expand your capacity to tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and can improve your overall mental-emotional health. This practice works through a process of consciously acknowledging your difficult, painful feelings, being present with them, and moving toward making peace with them. This can be used with any difficult or painful emotional state and involves several levels of awareness and action. Here are 5 ways that you can immerse yourself in sound to raise your vibration.Gongs and Bells- Buddhists use different instruments to create healing practices. The light chime of bells or heavy ringing of a gong reverberates into the atmosphere, setting the tone for stillness, quiet reflection and giving space. To use for yourself, bang the gong or bell one, two or three times at the beginning of your sound healing. Once you finish, repeat the sound as a way to close the session.Singing Bowls-The Tibetan culture of the Himalayas has a reputation for their deep spiritual practices and they are famous for their singing bowls to induce relaxation and peace. A study published in the Journal of Evidence Based Alternative Medicine found that singing bowl sounds reduces stress, anger and depression while promoting overall feelings of peace. To use a singing bowl, you create the sound by firmly pressing a mallet against the bowl's outside rim. This creates a calming sound that gently soothes away any disturbances in the body.Saying Mantras-Mantra meditation uses the repetition of sacred sound as a way to raise your vibrational energy in the mind and body. All types of spiritual practices around the world use this type of meditation including Hinduism, Buddism, Sikism as well as Christianity and islam. Set aside a few minutes and choose a mantra that bests suits you. Then sit quietly and repeat the mantra either out loud or silently in your mind. If your mind wanders, simply bring your awareness back to the mantra.Sound Baths-During a sound bath you are bathed in healing sounds but it's not about the music. It's about how the sounds can help you balance energy. During a sound bath, you don't want to hook into a melody or repeat things because you don't want the brain to recognize a repeated beat. You want people to release and you want the brain to let go. You can actually create your own sound bath experience at home. Invite a friend or two to join. You can combine different healing sounds and instruments, like gongs, singing bowls, chimes, tuning forks as well as your voice. Just close your eyes and let the healing take place.Sounds of Nature-sometimes the key to healing is a simple as stepping outside of your front door. Nature has so many healing sounds from a trickling stream, the waves of the ocean or the rustling of the wind in the leaves. When you're in need of some calm, find a quiet place in nature. Close your eyes and bring an awareness to the sounds. Begin by listening to the sounds furthest away for a few minutes and then shift your focus to what you hear closest to you. Then finally open your ears to the entire sound experience that surrounds you. When your thoughts wander, just bring them back to the sounds. This type of sound healing can help you focus your mind and calm anxious or unsettling emotions.Affirmation: I can make positive changes in my life. I deserve to be happy. Each day is a new opportunity for healing, feeling balanced and raising my vibration.Oracle Card Reading:I release my need to be perfect, and I center into my commitment to serve the world more love. When in doubt, I choose to see peace. When I allow others to support me, I support them, too.

Look around your local gym long enough, and you're likely to see the phrase "Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional," emblazoned on a bumper sticker, a T-shirt, or a bicep in the form of a tattoo. It's one thing to adopt that mantra as a way to encourage yourself to eke out one more rep or run one more minute. It's another to adopt it as an overall way of life.    That's what Byron Katie specializes in. "The Work" that it takes to wake up to reality, let go of negative perceptions about yourself and your place in the world and to stop judging - others and yourself. Ask yourself a series of four questions when you're having a strong emotional reaction-- 1. Is it true?  2. Can I be sure that it's true?  3. How do I react when I believe that it's true?  4. Who would I be without this thought?   If you do this simple--but not easy--exercise on a regular basis you can begin to opt-out of suffering and make more conscious decisions about your life.    And remember, as Katie says: Reality is always kind. It's just that we so rarely live in it.
