Episode sponsor: Eastern Washington University Episode URL: https://planning.org/podcast/critical-conversations-in-transportation-planning-wes-marshall-and-trung-vo-aicp/ In this episode, co-hosts Divya Gandhi and Em Hall were excited to take the podcast show on the road, recording episodes at the 2025 National Planning Conference in Denver. This dispatch of Critical Conversation in Transportation Planning kicks off our safety series and features Wes Marshall, PhD, PE, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, and Trung Vo, AICP, PE, Denver Office Director, Senior Planner, and Owner at Toole Design. Our speakers highlight how many traffic engineering standards are based on flawed assumptions rather than science, specifically pointing to problems with level of service metrics, automatic traffic growth assumptions, and designing for peak hours rather than community needs. They emphasize the need for courage to tackle arterial roads where most fatalities occur, challenging the reactive approach of waiting for crashes to happen instead of proactively designing safer streets for all users. Keltie and Carly chat about: Carly's journey from single to meeting her partner, Mike; the experience of becoming a step-mom to Mike's two daughters — and how this relationship influenced Carly's own Kids or Childfree choice; and Carly's decision to become a mom. Carly's decision to freeze her eggs in her mid-30s — and why she's so happy she did. Her experiences as a step-parent and a first-time mom, including the importance of partner support, and the challenges of navigating relationships with stepkids. How Carly went from ambivalent about motherhood, to deciding to have a child — including the natural unfolding of her family life. The joys and challenges of motherhood and the impact on her identity and independence, thus far in her journey. About Carly: Carly Church has a habit of choosing to swim against the tide. Trained as a Professional Engineer and then moving on to work across the globe in the mining industry she has often found herself blazing a trail for women in the industry. A love for travel, both recreational and as part of long-term rotations on mining projects from Botswana to the rather more chilly, Northern Ontario, defined Carly's life in her 20s and 30s. Send us a textJohn Desjarlais, a professional engineer who grew up in Cumberland House, Sask., explores the values-based teachings of Indigenous peoples and his own Métis upbringing for pathways into more representative codes of ethics for professional bodies.A proponent of practical approaches to engraining truth and reconcilation (or conciliation or reciprocity) in the lives of all Canadians, Desjarlais speaks with hosts Jessica Vandenberghe and George Lee about community wealth, role-modelling, the need for representation of Indigenous communities and peoples among decision-makers and policy-makers, and much more."When I looked at the Cree code of ethics, I was, like, wow. It's all virtues. It's values. It's ways of being," says Dejarlais, a past president of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Non-Indigenous codes of ethics tend to focus on duty, he said — and would benefit from expanding into values that accent things like humility, respect and relationships.Support the showJoin our Facebook community: www.facebook.com/UnsettledJourneys/Check us out on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unsettledjourneys/Become a paid subscriber: https://ko-fi.com/unsettledjourneysQuestions, comments, suggestions, offers to volunteer:unsettledjourneys@gmail.com

KEY TAKEAWAYS First Nordic Metals is focused on exploration and development in the Nordic region, primarily Sweden and Finland. Their flagship asset is the Barsele Gold Project, which is a joint venture with Agnico Eagle Mines, holding significant potential with an estimated 2.4 million ounces of gold. The company boasts a robust executive team with extensive experience in the mining sector. Key members include Taj Singh (CEO), Adam Cegielski (President), and several others with backgrounds in successful mining ventures, enhancing the company's strategic direction and operational capabilities. Sweden and Finland are recognised as top-tier mining jurisdictions due to their pro-mining regulatory frameworks, low corporate tax rates, and rich geological resources. The region has a long legacy of mining, making it an appealing location for exploration and development. First Nordic Metals is planning one of the largest drill programs in Europe for 2025, with a focus on testing multiple drill-ready targets along the Gold Line Belt. The program aims to advance their exploration efforts and potentially discover new deposits. BEST MOMENTS "We believe that with 100 kilometers of the Gold Line Belt, there are two to three more deposits to be found, at least, with a similar size and scale to Barsele." "Sweden has become very pro-mining, really pushing projects ahead... They’re focusing on developing a strong industry where we can be leaders in sustainable mining." "Having Agnico there, both as a shareholder and as a joint venture partner, is fantastic... It's just been great in terms of info sharing." "We're trying to create Europe's next gold camp... We think there can probably be 2-3 other deposits to support a big complex." There is a popular saying in America that offers succinct insight into our culture. I think it was coined by Gen-X, but I'm not sure. What I do know is that this cliché is unique, because the only way to understand it is by hearing the speaker's tone. The expression is a reply to the American greeting, “How's it going?”, and, at face value, the response, “I'm living the dream,” sounds nice. However, as all native speakers know, this can imply that the person is elated, or absolutely miserable!Which, full circle, is the best example I can think of to illustrate the impossibly inconsistent reality of “life in America.” For some, “life's a dream,” but for others, it's an endless, devastating slog of 40+hour work weeks with little to no time off.I won't bore you with statistics, but suffice it to say it's common knowledge now that Americans, for decades, have been taking less vacations and paid-time off than other first-world countries, even the ones bosses love to stereotype as “worse than us.”Why does this matter? It matters because Americans now use, “I'm too tired from work” as an excuse for everything, even giving up on ourselves and others, and it's harming society. People are now “too tired” to be healthy, spend time with family, keep in touch with friends, and care about their community, and the result? Obesity, crime, suicide, and “low information” rates are skyrocketing “from sea to shining sea.”I started writing about the conspicuous meanings for “I'm living the dream” because it's a “binary term” that exposes our division, but I also think it's important to study because it uses sarcasm, a relatively new, but now stable aspect of American culture. Sarcasm is my favorite rhetorical device—FULL STOP. I'm deeply sarcastic, and it gets me in trouble all the time. For example, I often offend others with “wry jokes” about my son's abduction, and I recently made a sarcastic joke about an item in a stranger's grocery cart that 99% of us would get, but she didn't, and I hurt her feelings. However, the older I get, the more I see the disturbing reason for why and how people like me are so attracted to sarcasm. It's because, sometimes, it's a device we can use to deceive others when we're emotionally broken and can't handle our devastation.Like, I obviously don't find anything funny about what my ex-wife has done with our son and how it's affected him, me, my family, and even my friends, all of whom abruptly lost access to a boy we love and had been investing our hearts into.Ergo, it's probably not funny when someone is asked, “How are you?” and their impulse is to employ a sarcastic comment about The American Dream to mask the fact that they're emotionally broken from their participation in our “work culture.” Which makes sense, since some jobs are degrading and others are meaningless, and in both cases, they embitter the person to the point where they feel like they aren't valuable or valued, both of which create resentment. This is how “classism” works. But there's a third reason many Americans have a sarcastic opinion of our “work culture,” and this is why many of us feel like social order is breaking down. The other reason our working-class has resentment against the system/culture is because many Americans have jobs that are not degrading and do have meaning, but they're forced to do it so much that it bleeds into their “regular life” and this is why we now use the scariest term I've ever heard in my life: “work-life balance.” If you really think about this term, it's psychotic. It implies that we have a life, and then a “non-life” called work. That's deranged, and it ‘promotes' rage and apathy. And before you call me “pink,” I know that “work” and capitalism aren't the problem. People are resentful in socialist and communist countries too. What people resent is feeling like they're not helping the team, or that the team is taking them for granted. Here's my advice (because you shouldn't complain unless you offer a solution):Few, if any of us, can stop corporations from “doing what corporations do,” but all of us can give compassion to people with degrading or meaningless jobs, and we can also show compassion to wealthy people who were bamboozled into trading free time for money. These people might have more than others think they need, but they also suffer as they age and realize that instead of “living,” they worked all the time. The point I'm trying to make, and I think it's consistent, is that with deep, philosophical inquiry, it's possible to understand people who are not like us and whom we will never be like, and with this process comes great peace. No wise person ever said “love everyone,” let alone “like everyone.” What they say, over and over again, is “accept everything,” which includes “bad” systems and “bad” people.I love the environment and so do you! After all, the environment gives us everything we love and need, from the oxygen we breathe, to the junk food we eat, standing over the trashcan at 11pm (Just me?). That's why I think you should listen to my interview with David Auge, a prominent figure in the field of environmental management. David is on a mission to transform the humanities' approach to looking at sustainability issues. He is a Certified Sustainable Development Professional, Energy Manager, Hazardous Material Manager, a registered Professional Engineer. He's also really, really, like super-duper smart. Balancing work and well-being is a constant challenge for many, particularly for leaders who are managing both people and organizational commitments. Well-being easily slips down the priority list when pressing accountabilities come up, and it can feel like a “nice-to-have” rather than a necessity. However, well-being is a critical foundation for productivity, engagement, collaboration, and leadership, and research increasingly shows that when this foundation is lacking, it affects the overall health of the business. In today's episode, Emma Rose is joined by Conversant consultant and partner Kell Delaney and guest Eleanor Allen. Eleanor is CEO of Catapult for Change, focusing on empowering other leaders and organizations to overcome challenges and ignite innovative ideas that enable success. Having worked across the corporate and nonprofit sectors she brings a practical but whole-hearted perspective to the question of what it takes for businesses and people to thrive. It's that time again - Time for another episode of the WGI Unleashed Podcast! Join us as we travel to Austin, TX, to sit down with Marc Remmert, Director of MEP Engineering for an engaging and insightful conversation about his journey through life, career, and personal passions. Marc's story is one of transformation, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit that continues to inspire his work and his team. Small-Town Beginnings Marc grew up in a small town near Peoria, Illinois, where his family's roots run deep, spanning generations. Life there was simple yet meaningful, and Marc fondly recalls clear nights spent gazing at the stars—something he misses to this day. His upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance, shaping the person he is today. After high school, Marc left his hometown in search of broader horizons and new opportunities. He enrolled at Washington University in St. Louis, where he found the perfect blend of independence and connection—it was close enough to visit family on weekends but far enough for space during the week. It was also in St. Louis that he met his wife, a life-changing moment that added yet another layer to the city's special place in his heart. A Dynamic Career Path Marc's academic journey wasn't without its challenges. Initially drawn to biomedical engineering, he soon realized that a future filled with chemistry wasn't for him. After switching to electrical engineering, Marc discovered a passion for the field and a supportive community that fueled his ambition. While he initially envisioned designing computer chips, he pivoted to construction—a decision that launched his unconventional yet impactful career. Marc began his professional life with an electrical contractor in Charleston, South Carolina, working on data center projects for Google. The 70-hour weeks were grueling but transformative, giving Marc hands-on experience and a unique engineering perspective that would prove invaluable later in his career. A new chapter began when his wife accepted a job in Austin, Texas. Eager to pursue his Professional Engineer license, Marc joined Big Red Dog as a graduate engineer. At the time, the company had a startup feel, with only 35 employees. Over the next decade, Marc's career flourished as Big Red Dog merged with WGI. Today, he leads WGI's MEP department and the Austin office, crediting the company's innovative and entrepreneurial culture for empowering him to explore new ideas and grow with the organization. Life Beyond the Office Outside of work, Marc enjoys a balanced life filled with hobbies and intellectual pursuits. He's an avid reader with a knack for sharing book recommendations and a passionate golfer who's even managed to get his wife hooked on the sport. These activities allow Marc to unwind, recharge, and stay inspired. When asked about alternate career paths, Marc muses that he might have made a great lawyer—an intriguing "what if" for someone with his sharp intellect and drive. See You Next Time! I asked my personal accountant Colette Melott (CMA, EA) to join the Smart Cleaning Tribe for an Expert Call to help cleaning company owners understand their numbers and who to hire in their specific case. Colette starts this interview with the accounting basics. Bookkeepers helps you track transactions with your money coming in and your money coming out. In most cases, a bookkeeper does not help you apply what those numbers mean to anything. They are putting your puzzle together, but they're not telling you what the picture on the puzzle is. There are not too many certifications for bookkeepers. However a Quickbooks Pro Advisor is a great designation to find especially if your business utilizes Quickbooks. These certified bookkeepers are proficient enough to adapt your business numbers appropriately and legally to Quickbooks.Accountants puts it all together for you. Bookkeeping is a task of accounting, but they don't stop there. They take those numbers and apply meaning to them to help you make business and tax decisions. There are several designations of accounting professionals.General Accounting - This is an accountant with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting that operates UNDER a CPA or CMA licence. For example, Colette used to work in two corporate positions where the company held the certified accounting license and Colette worked under it. This is exactly how I operated as an engineer. GE held the Professional Engineer's license and I was a general engineer under this certification.Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - This designation is granted at the state level. The accountant must pass a high-level exam to obtain their CPA license. Plus, they must maintain this high-level each year. There is a high standard. At the corporate level, they are qualified to take the numbers a publicly traded company provides and certify them to the public. They are on the company's external team. However, most CPAs operate out of smaller offices and work with small private companies. Certified Management Accountant (CMA) - This is an international accounting designation. Therefore, their training must keep them familiar with domestic and international accounting standards. At the corporate level, they are qualified to be the comptroller or CFO to help the company compile the numbers to present to the public. They are on the company's internal team. The CMA must also pass a high-level initial and annual exam process to obtain and keep their license. There is a high standard.Enrolled Agent (EA) - The IRS has 3-part tax proficiency exam and certification process to enroll accountants in the IRS code. This allows them to prepare tax returns The Enrolled Agent is one of 3 designations that can legally represent you on an IRS audit. The other two designations that can do this for you are the CPA and the tax attorney.Tax Attorneys are the only ones who can practice law. They help if you need representation in tax court. This is a high level professional that you need when you're in trouble! Therefore, study this episode and hire the right professional so you never NEED this pro! That's part one of my interview with my accountant Colette. These are accounting designations I wised I knew 20 years ago. I hope that Colette helped you understand the landscape of accounting professionals. Would you like to connect with my accountant? You can find her at CMBA Solutions.
High-risk flood zones are expanding this year along significant stretches of Florida's coastline. In Broward County, nearly 90,000 properties have been moved into a FEMA flood zone. But 80,000 of them were in such a zone prior to ten years ago, when FEMA moved them out – only to add them back in this year. Many will now have to purchase flood insurance.Former Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Lisa Miller talks with the county floodplain manager for an explanation, the reporter who broke the story, and another reporter from Palm Beach County, which is fighting FEMA's efforts to expand flood zones. Show Notes FEMA calls these high-risk flood zones Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). They are designated on a FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map as zones that begin with the letter “A” or the letter “V” for those living along the coast, subject to additional threat of storm surge. Properties in these zones supposedly have a 1% probability of flooding each year, or about a one-in-four chance every 25-30 years. Some refer to this as the 1-in-100-year flood probability.FEMA's 2024 updated maps have moved nearly 90,000 (88,913) properties in Broward County, Florida into a high-risk flood zone. But almost 80,000 (79,689) were in that zone prior to FEMA's 2014 map update, then removed, and now 10 years later are back in a flood zone. “How did this happen and what's the science behind it?” asked host Miller.Carlos Adorisio, Floodplain Manager for the unincorporated area of Broward County, explained that FEMA flood maps are based on studies of two factors: rainfall and coastal storm surge. Maps from the 1980's and 1990's reflected most of the county was high-risk. “In 2014, FEMA updated the maps, but they only updated the portion for the rainfall risk and not for the storm surge. There was a lot of development and better modeling and a lot of areas were removed from the 100-year floodplain,” he explained. In its 2024 maps, FEMA updated only the coastal storm surge risk. “There's been more development, updated storm data, and better computer modeling techniques and mapping,” since the last storm surge studies done in the 1980's, said Adorisio, who is a Professional Engineer and a Certified Floodplain Manager. “One of the components of storm surge is the sea level, which is higher than they accounted for in the 80's and therefore the storm surge is higher in this study,” Adorisio explained. “Now the southern part of the county is lower than the middle and northern sections of the county...and it's to the point where FEMA believes that the higher storm surge elevation not only goes to I-95, it goes all the way to U.S. 27, which is close to the Everglades levee. That's why you have those almost 90,000 parcels that are increasing in flood risk and now in the Special Flood Hazard Area,” said Adorisio, who earlier in his career worked for FEMA as a technical consultant for flood maps. Ron Hurtibise, business reporter for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, first reported the scope of the 2024 flood map changes. The new high-risk flood zones are primarily located along... Tom Bodrovics welcomes back mining executive and metals analyst David Jensen. Together they revisit concerns around the London gold market's dominance, estimated to account for 91-92% of the global gold trade. This is thanks to the Bank of England's 'regulatory oversight' since 1986, permitting unallocated gold contracts instead of physical bars. The market trades $500 billion of gold daily and and 2.9 billion ounces of silver. However, only around 3.5% of London's vaulted gold is actual physical. They contrast the LBMA with the Shanghai gold market and point out the key differences. David argues that the London market functions as a price-setting mechanism rather than one of price discovery. They discuss Gibson's paradox, where interest rates follow price levels rather than inflation rate. Central banks benefit from this control scheme due to their control over monetary policy and debt levels using gold and silver as loose policy indicators. David delves deeper into the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which regulates through a voluntary code of conduct called NIPPS which is under Bank of England oversight. The metals market are dominated in London, with around 90% global cash trading occurring there. David raises concerns over the transparency and authenticity of silver holdings in Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), questioning claims against metal, sub-custodians, potential rehypothecation or selling. The actual amount of silver held and its implications for interest rates and the economy if pricing proves fictitious are discussed. (30:10) Measuring the value of data (33:80)Should an AI ethicist be part of the team or should everyone really be an ethicist? (45:00) Key Quotes:“Up until three years ago when we started this, some people – and really our entire organization – just thought data as IT. They didn't think much past that, because no one had ever really challenged them to think about it. So it wasn't really thought of as, ‘this is the data that we have, and this is the commander's business. This is how the business is going to run. It's not just letting IT figure it out.'” “I think that technology has helped us along the way to visualize data that otherwise would be difficult and time consuming to conceptualize and understand. And as we continue to find ways to make humans understand better what it is that they're looking at – especially in extremely dynamic and complex data situations – I think you'll start to see a shift of trust and that's really experience. It's experience in using data informed decision making activities.” “Would an ethics, an AI ethics advisor to the CDAO be a great thing? Absolutely. Are we all just ethicists? Yes, but I would say that there is a lot of understanding needed. There's a huge area where you could be an expert in the ethics of artificial intelligence and provide sound guidance day after day. I would think that this particular type of employee would be extremely valuable.” Mentions:U.S. Coast Guard 11 Missions AI U.S. Executive Orders White House Orders Federal Agencies to Name Chief AI Officers America's Cyber Defense AgencyMake Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life… And Maybe the World Bio: Captain Brian Erickson currently serves as the United States Coast Guard's first Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer and is principally responsible for the coordination of data and artificial intelligence activities across the organization. There's a new superhero in town. His name is Solar Man, and he's here to help the world, but not in the way you might think. To defeat his arch-nemesis, Solar Man reluctantly decides to join the Ultra League of Super Defenders, a band of superheroes that are beyond the law. But will Solar Man be able to show his Super Solar strengths and pass the audition?True Solar TakeawaysThe U.S. solar industry installs the equivalent of a residential solar installation every 39 seconds. All solar projects require some type of local permitting and utility connection ("interconnection") approvals.Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) are the catch-all name for the county, city, and utility approval bodies that oversee solar permitting.A "PE" is a licensed Professional Engineer. Some AHJs require their review of a solar installation design. Some don't. Sadly, there are no national standards or building codes for installing solar on a home, business, or utility-size project. Each county, city, and state has its own special rules, regulations, codes, and official requirements. As a result of different permitting codes and standards, solar's installation and interconnection processes can get slowed down. Local differences also increase the costs and time to install solar.AHJs and utilities can also be slow to approve projects due to the increasing number of solar projects being installed. AHJ staff need to be updated on the latest solar and battery products and new technologies.----- Visit ProbablyTrueSolar.com to sign up for the newsletter to learn about new episodes and live solar storytelling events.
