Almost exactly a year ago, four panelists came together to build a soundtrack to an imaginary RPG out of 8 fragments of other RPGs. Today, we're doing it again, except our "Hard Mode" rules dictate that we must choose songs from our source games with different use cases. So our Town Theme could be anything except another game's town theme, and so on. What kind of RPG will we assemble this time? The Shining Force series blends traditional RPG storytelling with tactical, grid-based combat. In Shining Force I (1992), players guide Max and his diverse team of warriors in defending the kingdom of Guardiana from the Dark Dragon. Shining Force II (1993) follows Bowie, who must rally heroes to face the malevolent forces of Zeon, offering a more open-world experience and refined strategy elements. Shining in the Darkness (1991), a precursor to these, is a first-person dungeon crawler where players explore mazes, solve puzzles, and battle monsters, laying the groundwork for the later games' storytelling and world-building. Alex, Johnathan, and Chris run through the past two weeks of news, bemoan the lack of time to play games, and then commit to not trying to play anything new. Ring Fit Adventure wins RPG of the year. But seriously, why isn't Shining Force II on that thing?

Man, games these days aren't what they're cracked up to be. Fine, we'll go make our own game! With Blackjack! And Power Gears! And religion?! Card games are metaphors for overcoming the deadly Blackjack Bishops...or something! This week, we played this little-known indie title you've probably never heard of, Mega Man 11, a delightful game about business psychics battling literal demons with tactical rock-paper-scissors, also known as Fortune 499, and an action-packed platformer about literally twisting the gears of an ancient mechanical civilization and mysterious religion, Iconoclasts!-Game Spoiler Warning!- Megaman 11 - 6:34Fortune 499 - 31:29Iconoclasts - 46:51 Our Game - 1:18:45This episode was edited by our own Tony Zahlne.Icon by our own Kevin Zuhn.Intro and Outro are 'Video Dungeon Boss' by Kevin MacLeod (Available under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license.)Next Month, we play Thumper, The Missing: J.J. Over the summer I spent some time playing through various games on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3. This is a great anthology of a lot of cool Genesis games, but also some that are not that good. This episode discusses some of them. There is not much about Phantasy Star or Shining Force because we will do full length episodes about those series in the future. Games Discussed: Alex Kidd Alien Storm Altered Beast Columns Shinobi III Streets Of Rage To further discuss these games, there is also some discussion of: Ninja Gaiden Tetris Strider The background music for this episode's mailbag is from Super Castlevania. Hi, we're just two boys taking a break from the equinarium long enough to record an NSFW podcast episode about a tactical RPG. Yep, that's right—we're still gushing about Shining Force II, DigitalTrends' fourth-ranked best Sega Genesis game. We open a package we received from Pinball Archmage Chris Edler and then talk about anthropomorphic animals who fight devils. Additionally, Tyler tries to shed his spider-sense by having his yes-yes hole washed out. It's been awhile since the Suicide Boys have discussed something from Digital Trends' list of best Sega Genesis games, but here we are talking about Shining Force II. This 1993 tactical role-playing game is one of Tyler's favorites and is a completely new experience for Dave. There's actually lots of game talk in this episode but also a lot of catching up and announcements. Tyler blows Dave's mind with a skin-related revelation, we open what we think is candy, and Dave plugs the Twitch channel a lot.
