Have the great ambitions for the role of international criminal justice in the world been misplaced? Can international courts deliver meaningful justice for the victims of extreme crimes in conflict? This conversation will explore the challenges of seeking accountability for war time atrocities with Erik Møse, one the pioneering figures of international criminal justice. His perspectives will draw from decades of experience, having served as the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and presided over the trials of the leading figures of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, where an estimated 800,000 individuals were killed within 100 days. In his current role as Chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, he will share his reflections on the rapidly evolving techniques for investigating international crimes in conflict zones. Speaker Erik Møse, Chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine; former President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda; former judge of the European Court of Human Rights and the Supreme Court of Norway In conversation with Rosemary Byrne, Professor of Legal Studies, NYUAD

Ministers speak with reporters on Parliament Hill as the Cabinet Committee on Canada-U.S. Relations and National Security meets. They face questions on Canada's ongoing trade disputes with the U.S. and China and U.S. President Donald Trump's recent comments that he would rather deal with a liberal than a conservative government in Canada.   Speaking with reporters are ministers François-Philippe Champagne (finance),  Jonathan Wilkinson (energy and natural resources), Rachel Bendayan (immigration), Kody Blois (agriculture), and Steven MacKinnon (jobs and families).    Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly also discusses China's recent execution of several Canadian citizens for “drug-related crime.”  the members of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine spoke to journalists in Geneva about their latest report to the UN Human Rights Council. The Chair of the Fact-Finding Mission, Erik Møse, and the two other expert members, Vrinda Grover and Pablo de Greiff, participated in a press conference held at the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Secretary-General is still in Brussels today, and a few hours ago, he took part in a working lunch with the Heads of State and Government of the European Union. As we mentioned, he was invited by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa – and this lunch took place at the opening of the European Council.  The Secretary-General and Mr. Costa spoke to the press as they entered the European Union building. Mr. Guterres expressed his appreciation for our partnership with the EU, reiterating that it is a fundamental pillar of the multilateral response to the challenges we face in peace and security, climate, sustainable development, and human rights.   Turning to the situation in Ukraine, the Secretary-General said any ceasefire is welcome because it saves lives, but he added that it is essential that a ceasefire paves the way for a just peace in Ukraine – a peace that respects the UN Charter, international law, and Security Council resolutions, namely about the territorial integrity of Ukraine.   The Secretary-General renewed his appeal for respect of the ceasefire in Gaza, for unimpeded humanitarian access to all areas of Gaza, and for the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages. His full remarks have been shared with you.                                                                 Tomorrow, the Secretary-General will deliver remarks in Leuven, where the universities KU Leuven and UC Louvain will jointly award an honorary doctorate to the United Nations. In his remarks, Mr. Guterres will pay tribute to the work and commitment of our UN colleagues around the world. The ceremony will be webcast live on UN WebTV.   Tomorrow, the Secretary-General is also scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Belgium, Bart De Wever. The Secretary-General will be back here on Monday morning.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/policy-and-rights--3339563/support.

This week Jeff Melnick and Erik Baker jump in to talk about Steven Spielberg's Munich. We talk about the history behind the attacks in 1972, why they were relevant in 2005, and why they remain relevant today. And yes, we absolutely discuss the warfare and attempted genocide in Palestine today. This is a really important conversation and I hope that it helps to illustrate how movies can be part of historical dialogue. I learned a lot from these guys and I hope you will too.About our guests:Jeffrey Melnick is a professor at University of Massachusetts Boston and the author of 9/11 Culture: America Under Construction (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), Black-Jewish Relations on Trial (University Press of Mississippi, 2000), and A Right to Sing the Blues (Harvard University Press, 1999). You can find him on twitter at @melnickjeffrey1Erik Baker is currently a Lecturer in the History of Science at Harvard University and oversee the senior thesis program for undergraduates. As an associate editor at The Drift, I've been involved since its inception. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard in May 2022, and my dissertation won the 2023 Leo P. Ribuffo Prize from the Society for U.S. Intellectual History. His research delves into the modern U.S. work culture and the impact of scientific expertise on workers' self-perception. In his forthcoming book, Make Your Own Job: The Entrepreneurial Work Ethic in Modern America, he explores how social scientists and management intellectuals reshaped the American work ethic during the turbulence of twentieth-century U.S. capitalism. He has contributed articles on labor, politics, and American history to publications such as Harper's, n+1, The Baffler, Jewish Currents, Jacobin, and The Drift, where he has been an editor since its inception.

Todd Andrew Howard was born in 1970 in Lower Macungie Township, Pennsylvania, to Ronald (Ron) and Priscilla Howard. His elder brother, Jeffrey Mark (Jeff) Howard, was later the director of creative affairs for Disney, where he oversaw the production of Bambi II. He developed an interest in computers, particularly video games, at a very young age. Howard considers the 1980s role-playing video games Wizardry and Ultima III: Exodus to be inspirations for his future games.Bethesda Softworks eventually recruited Howard in 1994 as a producer.

Zitat Erik: “Das ist eigentlich alles, was mich gerade interessiert.”
