The relationship between mothers and sons as depicted in the arts is complex and, as anyone familiar with Medea's story will attest, not always terribly positive. As Lauren Laverne discovers, however, there are many examples of stories, films and dramas in which the love between mums and sons is very much celebrated, and as a mother of two boys herself, Lauren is very keen to unpick the particular facets of the relationship as depicted on page, stage and screen. She meets Sophie Ellis Bextor, mother of four boys, and hears about carving out a space in which she can continue her career as a singer - even if that has meant at times recording songs with a baby in her arms. Patrick Ness is the author of the novel 'A Monster Calls' and also wrote the screenplay for the successful film. He tells Lauren how the story, about a boy dealing with the imminent death of his mum from cancer, was originally conceived by another author, Siobhan Dowd, who died before getting chance to complete it. Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, a highly successful mother and son band from Kansas, talk about how they came to play together and the various upsides of being together on the road. Finally, Lauren meets Jonathan Butterell and Dan Gillespie Sells, who helped create the West End hit 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie', the musical version of a true story about a teenage boy from County Durham who is determined to go to the school prom in a dress. The story appealed to both Jonathan and Dan because each of them recognised the 'fierce and open hearted relationship' they shared with their own mothers. Presenter: Lauren Laverne Producer: Geoff Bird.

With Mark Lawson. Three decades after TV viewers around the world asked 'Who shot JR?', the saga of the Ewing family arrives in the 21st century, with a revamp of Dallas. In the new version, JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen are joined by the next generation - with just as many rivalries and power-struggles as before. David D'Arcy reviews. Turner Prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread discusses her new commission, the facade of the Whitechapel Art Gallery. She explains how she found inspiration. The Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are awarded for writing and illustrating books aimed at young people. Unusually this year the same book has won both medals: A Monster Calls was written by Patrick Ness, completed from an idea left by the late Siobhan Dowd, herself a winner of the Carnegie in 2009, and Jim Kay provided the book's atmospheric illustrations. They join Mark to reflect on their collaboration. Front Row is reporting from the four contenders for the Art Fund Prize for museums. Ten years ago, the Watts Gallery near Guildford, which is dedicated to the work of neglected Victorian painter G.F. Watts, was in a sorry state with a leaking roof, broken windows and an average attendance of five visitors a day. But, thanks to a multi-million pound restoration, the gallery has been returned to its former glory, when it was one of the major centres for art in this country. Producer Ellie Bury.
Mariella talks to Booker winning author Anne Enright about her new novel, The Forgotten Waltz. Dickens fan Roy Hattersley and academic John Bowen examine the literary friendship between Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. And young adult author Patrick Ness talks about picking up the literary baton, after he completed a novel by fellow writer Siobhan Dowd following her death from cancer.
Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd. 18-year-old Fergus runs high in the Irish hills to escape. His brother, an IRA sympathizer, is on a hunger strike in prison, and might die soon. Fergus needs to succeed in school to get to continue his studies. And now even his running is no escape, because he's been asked to be a courier for strange packets he suspects are drugs. When Fergus finds a bog mummy from the year AD 80 he's amazed at how her story parallels his own.
