Join hosts J.D. Barker, Christine Daigle, Jena Brown, and A.I. Kevin Tumlinson as they discuss the week's entertainment news, including stories about Esquire layoffs, Costco books, Spotify analytics, and PRH. Then, stick around for a chat with Katie Tallo! Katie Tallo: For three decades, Katie has been an award-winning screenwriter and director, collaborating on projects in animation, television and motion pictures. After winning an international novel contest for women writers in 2013, Katie landed a publishing deal for her debut novel. The thriller Dark August is set in the Wellington West neighbourhood where she lives. The novel became an international bestseller and was chosen as an Apple Book of the Month and New York Times Editor's Choice. It inspired a trilogy including the follow-up, Poison Lilies, which brings Augusta and Levi back for another cold case when a body emerges from a frozen pond, and the final installment, Buried Road, which tumbles forward more than a decade to find Gus and her daughter, Bly, on a precarious road trip to find a missing person. Katie is currently working on a new mystery thriller. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/writersink/support

**Credit** Produzentinnen/Hosts: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers Recherche: Paulina Krasa, Laura Wohlers, Magdalena Höcherl Schnitt: Pauline Korb Rechtliche Abnahme: Abel und Kollegen **Shownotes** ABC News Original: The Housewife and the Hustler, Doku auf Hulu The legal titan and the ‘Real Housewife': The rise and fall of Tom Girardi and Erika Jayne LATimes: The legal titan and the “Real Housewife”: https://bitly.ws/36xh9 SZ: Der Anwalt, der einen Anwalt braucht: https://bitly.ws/36xhh Prosecutors urge federal LA judge to find Tom Girardi competent to face trial: https://bitly.ws/36xho **Partner der Episode** Du möchtest mehr über unsere Werbepartner erfahren? Vildar Mac sees the light, literally, as Tey Ferrick proves his mettle, as The HIgh Republic (Vol. 2) #10 concludes with a Jedi victor, but not without stinging losses. In Dark Horse Comics' Hyperspace Stories #5, a familiar doll proves to be a sought-after token by Assaj Ventress who encounters a pair of new Jedi, along with another pair of rather familar faces (Obi-Wan and Anakin), in a fast-paced story that sheds more light on her dysfunctional relationship with Count Dooku.Darth Vader may be down, but he's not out, much to the chagrin of Cyn, who has vastly underestimated the power of the dark side in Darth Vader: Black, White & Red #2 (of 4). Meanwhile, two more stories feature a ghastly alien encounter aboard a seemingly derelict ship, while a young villager sees Vader not as a villain but a hero. And, weirdly enough, this episode marks our 350th since we began the podcast back in June 2015.Comics Discussed This WeekHyperspace Stories #5 (of 12) (14:02)Darth Vader: Black, White & Red #2 (of 4) (25:39)The High Republic (Vol. 2) #10 (of 10) (42:52)Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Bounty Hunters #31Star Wars (Vol. 3) #31News: Per Diamond, some comic shops may find themselves without certain issues of Star Wars comics that are due out this week. Season Five starts today, you Magnificent Firebirds!Season One gave us a full lAD deep dive (if you've never read Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark, general existential malaise is a really good reason to start), and Season Two gave us The Books That Blooded Us -- the books that made us the romance readers we are. Season Three was during a pandemic, so just let us live (but also, there was a Roy Kent episode). Season Four introduced the Trailblazer episodes, where we featured interviews with the people who have built the romance house over the last fifty years. Season Five will build on all this — Deep diving on books that are new and fabulous, old and transformative, and generally reveal how vast and magnificent the romance pool can get. We've got great interstitials planned, trailblazer episodes already recorded and waiting for you, and a few new episodes that will focus on the books that are putting romance on the map these days…and where readers should go from there. We're excited! Aren't you? Head over to your favorite podcasting app and subscribe so you don't miss a moment of it!In the meantime, today's episode covers some of the romance new that happened while we were away the publishing DOJ trial, the absolute explosion of great books on August 23rd, and what on earth is happening with TikTok? There's a new theme song! And Jen broke her arm! Next week is an interstitial, and our first read along of the season is Lisa Kleypas's Marrying Winterborne. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, or at your local indie. We're back and more tired than ever! But first, we need to catch up on all that's happened in our lives since the start of the year. Hannah's tuckered out! The Tax Holiday Weekend Extravaganza was a big success, raising $650 for the Eastern MA Abortion Fund and selling all kinds of used books out of the Garage (which we're now capitalizing), but also rather exhausting. Plus, Sam had to part with some books from the personal collection he was a little sad to see go, but that led to a discussion of which books Sam actually reads more than once (Hannah basically never re-reads), inspired by the new Duran Duran book. This leads to a discussion of "perfectly fine" books and why we don't really need to finish those books and how exciting it is to start a book and know you're going to want to finish it (like "Chain Gang All-Stars," which comes out ... in April). Hannah also felt the need to talk about Penguin Random House/Simon and Schuster case, which Sam only barely understands, mostly because she's delighting in all of the nonsense that's being spouted, and it has made her want to buy more books from Norton (new Lydia Millett!), which is employee-owned. Then we finish up with a Molly Tanzer update (there are BOTH gloves and a cat on the cover, BTW) where Hannah admits she probably shanked the marketing on the third book.
How can you intensify the conflict in your books to hook readers? How can you introduce different types and layers of conflict to improve your story? This week we talk about–what else–the court case involving the DOJ vs. PRH, regarding their attempted merger with Simon & Schuster. Specifically, we analyze how the executives testifying have been talking about the industry at large, and what it reveals about corporate publishing strategy, and how it affects authors who aren't celebrities or politicians. If you've been seeing chatter about this case, this is the episode that gets you caught up. Join us!

If you've purchased a book in the past 10 years, chances are you've picked up a product made by Penguin Random House. On this week's episode of Room for Growth, Penguin Random House's Director and VP of Growth Marketing, Anne Bono joins the podcast to share insights from her 20+ years of gutsy, fascinating experience as a “homegrown” marketer. Anne discusses how being an early adopter of marketing channels has given her a wide range of experience across industries, leading to her current responsibility of growing the Penguin Random House (PRH) brand. She explains how PRH stood up as a direct-to-consumer arm during the pandemic, and how they use customer data to make product recommendations based on niche interests. As a Latina and a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, Anne is deeply passionate about how organizations take action to include underrepresented identities beyond window dressing, and she gives candid advice on how marketers can own it when they make mistakes in their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion. A self-described “violently happy” individual, Anne shares all the above and more with Billie and Billy on this week's episode – you don't want to miss it.
