The title says it all. Another view of the Wu Wei from a slightly different angle. How do we not interfere, allow, stay in balance, be at rest, be human, be still, and enjoy our original nature? Before our discussion of this story, we discussed prayer - what we thought a Taoist would pray. Concerning the story, we talked about how our fears keep us trapped into making decisions we believe are protecting us that are actually causing harm. We also talked about freedom in the same light as fear in our decision makings. Decisions we make that we think are leading us to freedom, that are instead enslaving us even more. I want to thank Craig M. for filling in as host. A listener, Devin P, requested this story, which was close to the end of the book, so we moved it up. After an excellent discussion, we concluded that everything we have is a gift to be given away. Only through viewing all as a gift do we have the possibility of depending on our Higher Power rather than our limited abilities. Thank you, Devin P! I hope you enjoy it! In this episode, Zach E. and Buddy C. discuss verses five through seven of the Gospel of Thomas. We use rules to debate and stay trapped in self and be consumed by the lion of ego. We can live above these rules when we let our experience guide us; when we turn the light around and surrender to the Kingdom of God that is already within. All opposites cause the inverse. The way to the middle is through impartiality - being open to another's ideas and considering their opinion. Have you ever listened to sobriety podcasts? Does alcoholism or addiction run in your family? Have you tried Alcoholics Anonymous or the 12 Steps of AA? Tao Te Ching quotes, and the teachings of Lao Tzu give an excellent description of a working Higher Power. Are you considering how to get sober? Are you seriously thinking about sobriety for the first time being alcohol is controlling your life as never before?
In the 81st Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes how a life filled with giving is the most fulfilling. How do I learn to give? By being Empty – empty of our rules, the desire to know, the need to control, ambition, and forcing our needs on others are just a few ways of being empty. We also hear lots of ways of giving other than monetary. One of the most difficult is giving others the right to their opinions. Great Discussion! Emptiness version of the Serenity Prayer God grant us the emptiness to accept what we cannot change, the emptiness to change what we can, and the emptiness to know the difference. In the 80th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes a life of contentment – where our bucket list is made of things we can find within. Turning the light within – not only for disturbances but for our contentment and satisfaction too! In the 79th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes how the Tao is on the side of those that seek a way to give rather than to get. A good discussion on dealing with lingering resentments that plague anyone that does not take the action of “returning injury with kindness” in any altercation, especially the small ones with those we are the closest. In the 78th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu gives another analogy demonstrating the paradoxical strength of water. In the 77th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, we think Lao Tzu is giving another description of wu wei but who really knows. There is a place of use and ease when using a bow. A bow is useless if it is not in balance. We discuss how we see a bow relating to recovery and life itself. Can we lower expectations and humbly approach life so we can be more useful in more moments of the day? In the 76th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu explains flexibility. Anything alive is flexible, pliable, and meek. Death brings rigidity, stiffness, and weakness. Learning to be flexible in everyday life is essential for living undisturbed - an excellent discussion of the application of being flexible. The tender, soft, compliant, yielding, gentle, humble, and meek will rise to the top and overcome! Two recovery meetings mentioned for during the pandemic; www. Lao Tzu said much about our response to fear. Our real problem is not the pandemic or any other issue. Instead, our problem is the fear of that issue or problem. Good discussion on the difference between fear and danger. We also discussed how to move from fear to love with the application of the tools of recovery. In the 74th Chapter of the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu describes what happens when we try to control the future out of fear. Death is not the issue. Death is coming in all things. Our fear based control in trying to prevent death is the issue and always leads to harm. Good discussion, not only about the fear of death of our natural life but also fear of death in our relationships, jobs, etc. We also discussed the mechanics behind what we think happens when we pray for others to have what we want(BB p. 552). It has nothing to do with the person we are praying for! This week is all about ourselves. Ehem. Well, to be precise, it's all about self, which is to say our Egos. Ego is central to who we are as individuals and is the lens in which we view ourselves, others, and the outside world through. The state of our Egos has a whole lot to do with how we treat ourselves and others, and when our Egos are out of whack, our sobriety is too. We'll do our level best to define Ego and how it affects us in Recovery without going into the proverbial weeds or going down too many rabbit holes, which when we're talking about a subject such as Ego is certainly easier said than done. We'll provide you with helpful insight and strategies to keep the ‘ol Ego your Amigo and ensure it doesn't get to high or too low. Plus we'll share feedback from the Sober & Serious community and take your calls, so Listen Up.
