Most people, and high achievers in particular, suffer from a paradoxical problem: Trying too hard backfires and causes your deepest, darkest fears to realize. When high achievers are confronted with a problem in their personal or professional life, their first instinct is to push harder, work longer, go on more dates. They're desperately searching for connection, peace, joy, and love. But they don't realize that their need for control keeps these forever out of their reach. But there's an ancient solution to this problem: Wu Wei, acting without inner friction. However, you can't approach it like some business metric. In fact, you have to learn to stop trying so hard, to loosen your grip on control if you want to experience the effortless flow that's the main ingredient in true mastery of life. In today's show, I breakdown what Wu Wei really is, why most high achievers totally miss it, and how you can become more fulfilled in life by trying less. Listen now. In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, I, Stewart Alsop, speak with Perry Knoppert, founder of The Octopus Movement, joining us from the Netherlands. We explore everything from octopus facts (like how they once had bones and decided to ditch them—wild, right?) to neurodivergence, non-linear thinking, the alien-like nature of both octopuses and AI, and how the future of education might finally reflect the chaos and creativity of human intelligence. Perry drops insight bombs on ADHD, dyslexia, chaos as a superpower, and even shares a wild idea about how frustration—not just ideas—can shape the world. You can connect with him and explore more at theoctopusmovement.org, and check out his playful venting app at tellTom.ink.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:31 Fascinating Facts About Octopi02:03 The Octopus Movement: Origins and Symbolism05:55 Exploring Neurodivergence and AI20:15 The Future of Education with AI29:48 Challenges in the Dutch Education System30:59 Educational Pathways in the US31:50 Exploring Neurodiversity32:34 The Origin of Neurodiversity34:34 Nomadic DNA and ADHD36:02 Personal Nomadic Experiences37:20 Cultural Insights from China41:59 Trust in Different Cultures44:20 The Foreigner Experience52:21 Artificial and Natural Intelligence55:11 The Octopus Movement and Tell Tom AppKey InsightsNeurodivergence isn't a superpower—it's a different lens on reality. Perry challenges the popular narrative that conditions like ADHD or dyslexia are inherently "superpowers." Instead, he sees them as part of a broader, complex human experience—often painful, often misunderstood, but rich with potential once liberated from linear systems that define what's "normal."AI is the beautiful product of linear thought—and it's freeing us from it. Perry reframes artificial intelligence not as a threat, but as the ultimate tool born from centuries of structured, logical thinking. With AI handling the systems and organization, humans are finally free to return to creativity, chaos, and nonlinear, intuitive modes of intelligence that machines can't touch.Octopuses are the ultimate symbol of curious misfits. The octopus—alien, adaptable, emotion-rich—becomes a metaphor for people who don't fit the mold. With three hearts, nine brains, and a decentralized nervous system, octopuses reflect the kind of intelligence and distributed awareness Perry celebrates in neurodivergent thinkers.Frustration is more generative than ideas. In one of the episode's most unexpected insights, Perry argues that frustration is a more powerful starting point for change than intellectual ideation. Ideas are often inert without action, while frustration is raw, emotional, and deeply human—fuel for meaningful transformation.Education needs to shift from repetition to creation. The current model of education—memorization, repetition, testing—serves linearity, not creativity. With AI taking over traditional knowledge tasks, Perry envisions classrooms where kids learn how their minds work, engage with the world directly, and practice making meaning instead of memorizing facts.Being a foreigner is a portal to freedom. Living in unfamiliar cultures (like Perry did in China or Stewart in Argentina) reveals the absurdities of our own norms and invites new ways of being. Foreignness becomes a superpower in itself—a space of lowered expectations, fewer assumptions, and greater possibility.Labels like “neurodivergent” are both helpful and illusory. While diagnostic labels can offer relief and clarity, Perry warns against attaching too tightly to them. These constructs are inventions of linear thought, useful for navigating systems but ultimately limiting when it comes to embracing the full, messy, nonlinear reality of being human.

BONUS Episode 6 – The Call to Wu WeiWhy do some of us feel an unexplainable pull toward something deeper—toward the flow?In this bonus episode, we go beyond pop-philosophy and into the lived, raw terrain of Wu Wei, one of Daoism's most iconic yet misunderstood concepts. While modern culture likes to equate Wu Wei with “flow state,” the truth is far more layered. We peel back the linguistic drift, social media buzzwords, and surface-level interpretations to return to the source: the old-school Daoist practices rooted in physical discipline, internal alchemy, and spiritual transformation.Together, we ask:What is Wu Wei really, and how has its meaning changed? Can you train for Wu Wei—or must it arise naturally? Why do some people chase the Dao, while others walk away? How do questions themselves become the first steps on the path?Whether you've glimpsed the Dao before or are just starting your journey, this episode invites you to examine your motivations, recognize the illusions of control, and maybe—just maybe—begin the long walk toward true alignment.✨ “You don't get the magical flow without being highly accurate. And accuracy starts with asking real questions.” ✨Taoist resources: https://linktr.ee/taoismforthemodernworld
21 Principles of the Taoism I Lao Tzu's Art of Not TryingThe Tao Te Ching—"The Classic of the Way and Virtue" speaks of the Tao, the natural way of the universe, the pattern of all things in nature. To resist the Tao... is to walk upstream against a river. To follow it... is to move with the current, embodying Wu Wei—effortless action. This is not inaction but the art of flowing with life rather than forcing it. The willow bends with the storm while the rigid oak snaps. Traditionally credited to the sage Lao Tzu, the Tao Te Ching is a guide for those who seek harmony with the Way. Lao Tzu taught that to master life is not to conquer it, but to move with it, as effortlessly as water carving stone. Here are the 21 Principles of the Tao Te Ching.SpeakerZach Brown Hosted on Acast. In this episode of Meditation with Raphael, we explore the profound balance between two transformative paths: Wu Wei, the path of least resistance, and the path of most resistance, where growth and mental toughness are forged. Life's wisdom lies in knowing when to flow effortlessly with circumstances and when to push through challenges to build resilience.
In this episode of Meditation with Raphael, we explore the transformative power of the path of most resistance. While yesterday's discussion on Wu Wei emphasized flowing effortlessly with life, today we flip the script. Sometimes, growth demands that we embrace discomfort, push through challenges, and deliberately choose the harder path.
Video episode available: https://youtu.be/6PnOPNetBN0 In today's episode of Meditation with Raphael, we delve into the transformative Taoist principle of Wu Wei—“effortless action.” Often misunderstood as passivity, Wu Wei is about flowing harmoniously with life, aligning your actions with the natural rhythm of the world. Learn how to apply this profound wisdom in your daily life to navigate challenges with ease, make better decisions, and live in alignment with your true self. Discover how Wu Wei can help you: ✨ Let go of excessive control and trust the natural flow of life. ✨ Embrace the path of least resistance for greater effectiveness. ✨ Cultivate a mindset of peace, harmony, and effortless action. This is more than a lesson in Taoist philosophy—it's a step toward Living a Transcendent Life.
Wu-Wei makes another appearance in Verse 60. Herein we discover how Wu-Wei is not a total “non-doing,” but knowing when to retire from doing just enough. Wu-Wei is not hands off. It's knowing when to retire your hands-on. We speak of application to educators, governors, parents, and in this verse, even cooks and chefs! Chandler Schroeder returns for another round at the mic with his wise and kindling voice.

Most achievers who want more from life—whether in their relationships, career, or fulfillment—turn to best-selling self-help books. But most of the “wisdom” in these bestsellers doesn't stand the test of time—at least not when compared to ancient texts that have helped people for thousands of years. One such ancient book that offers a treasure trove of wisdom is called the Zhuangzi, an early Daoist text. And while it's more than 2,000 years old… the wisdom contained inside this text is timeless. In fact, it's even more useful in modern life than it was in ancient times. In this episode, we're diving into wisdom that could completely reshape your life coming from a source that most achievers have never even heard of. It's ancient, it's profound, and it might just unlock what you've been searching for in love, career, and your inner life. Listen now. Show Highlights Include: Why this under-the-radar, ancient text can solve your modern day relationships problems better than any best-selling self-help book (0:31) What if you didn't have to struggle, stress, or endlessly prove yourself? Here's a liberating mindset that can get rid of these pressures (3:58) The “Wu Wei” secret for becoming more authentic and aligned in your relationship instead of always at tension's mercy (8:42) How to become more successful than you ever imagined by letting go of your expectations and the constant grind for success (13:01) Do you feel trapped in your own identity? Here's why a butterfly can set you free from this perspective and give you a healthier one (16:55) How to permanently eliminate your neediness (both in your relationships and career) (24:45) This ancient Chinese technique helps you “fast” your mind (and free yourself from worries, pressures, and emotions that aren't serving you) (27:23) The Bruce Lee method for becoming wildly successful in your personal and professional life by acting like a toddler (30:14) For more about David Tian, go here: https://www.davidtianphd.com/about/ Emotional Mastery is David Tian's step-by-step system to transform, regulate, and control your emotions... so that you can master yourself, your interactions with others, and your relationships... and live a life worth living. Dr. Nicole Fortin from The Language of Healing, our resident expert of Traditional Chinese Medicine, will inform us of Wu Wei and You Wei and more. We all know that feeling of being in the zone, where everything flows effortlessly. Wu Wei is a concept from Daoism that means "non-action" or "effortless action". It embodies the idea of aligning with the natural rhythms of life and simply “going with the flow,” rather than forcing outcomes. By practicing wu wei, we can reduce stress, enhance creativity and decision-making, and cultivate better relationships. It teaches us that sometimes the best way to move forward is to step back and let life unfold naturally. From emptiness comes everything (the 10 thousand things) The minute you fixate on something, it changes Follow the path of effortless action, inspired action, go as a river does – like an amoeba.Opposite is You Wei (intentional action) can lead to struggle, stress, burnout, controlling or manipulating for certain outcomes.Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Is the universe a grand symphony following a rhythm? “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” We live in strange times, where mythology is actually history, where instead of teaching history, we obfuscate it, history is written by the victors as they say. If it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed. Join me around the digital campfire as we explore the cosmos, and uncover hidden gnosis. GOD: An Autobiography, As Told to a Philosopher - The Podcast, S1
Questions? Comments? Text Us!In this episode of The Life Wisdom Project, philosopher Dr. Jonathan Weidenbaum joins Jerry to explore the fascinating world of Chinese spirituality and its connections to Western philosophy. Jonathan shares his transformative journey to Mount Jiuhua, one of China's sacred mountains, offering insights into how nature and spirituality are deeply intertwined in Chinese thought. The discussion bridges Eastern and Western philosophies, including Heidegger's idea of Gelassenheit (letting go) and Buber's concepts of I/It vs. I/Thou relationships. These ideas are unpacked to reveal how they shape our understanding of desire, values, and the importance of suspending desire.Listeners will also enjoy a powerful Zen parable about a master and a thief, which uncovers profound spiritual truths. The conversation extends to the Taoist principle of Wu Wei, or effortless action, highlighting the significance of aligning with the natural world.Jonathan and Jerry further discuss the Ethics of Care and virtue ethics, connecting these ideas to Confucian ethics, where context and flexibility are valued over rigid rules. This episode offers practical insights into applying these philosophical concepts in everyday life.Relevant Episodes:[Dramatic Adaptation] God Shares His Earliest Interactions In Chinese SpiritualityOther Series:From God To Jerry To You- A series calling for the attention of spiritual seekers everywhere, featuring breakthroughs, pathways, and illuminations. Two Philosophers Wrestle With God- Sit in on a dialogue between philosophers about God and the questions we all have. What's On Our Mind- Connect the dots with Jerry and Scott over the most recent series of episodes. What's On Your Mind- What are readers and listeners saying? Andrzej Kozlowski lived under constant pressure and felt like an outcast. He went on a quest for wholeness, immersing himself in Western modalities such as coaching, psychology, dietetics, hypnosis, NLP and many other practices. Anxiety and self-doubt persisted. However, karma from past lives intervened, leading him to wise mentors who guided him through the arts of Taoism and traditional Chinese medicine. He has practiced numerous disciplines, from yoga to Kung fu, from Qi Gong to Tai Chi, from Wu Wei to exorcisms, and danced with spirits and conversed with gods. Despite the length of his journey, he often hindered his own progress with ego-driven obstacles. Now liberated in mind, body, and spirit, Andrzej is here to share wisdom and help others break free from spiritual misconceptions and ego-driven limitations.Transform Dreams into reality (sageandy.com)
In this episode, we will explore "Phenomena," a Sheng concerto commissioned by China's NCPA Orchestra. The program features European composer Bernd Richard Deutsch, Sheng virtuoso Wu Wei, and NCPA Orchestra's Head of Artistic Planning, Tang Ning. They discuss the ancient Chinese mouth organ, the Sheng, and its unique integration into Western classical music.
In a world that often seems to be moving at breakneck speed, where the pressure to succeed and the fear of falling behind can feel overwhelming, it's easy to get caught up in the trap of constant striving. We push ourselves to work harder, move faster, and achieve more, often at the cost of our own well-being and inner peace. But what if there was another way? What if, instead of struggling and forcing our way through life, we could learn to align ourselves with the natural flow of the universe and achieve our goals with ease and grace? Picture yourself swimming in a vast, calm lake. As you glide through the water, you may notice that the more you struggle and fight against the water, the more exhausted you become. Your muscles tense, your breathing becomes labored, and you may even start to sink. But what happens when you relax and allow yourself to flow with the water? Suddenly, you find that you can move with ease and grace. You use less energy, but you travel farther and faster. You're no longer fighting against the natural resistance of the water, but instead, you're working with it.This is the essence of wu wei - learning to align ourselves with the natural flow of life, rather than struggling against it. Just as swimming with the current conserves energy and allows us to move with greater efficiency, practicing wu wei in our daily lives helps us achieve our goals with less effort and more ease.
Welcome to our very first episode! Wu Wei, or the art of doing nothing, is a concept that has impacted our lives in every way. From business, to relationships, sports and spiritual growth - Wu Wei has totally transformed how we perceive and address challenges. It is our greatest teacher and we are stoked to share it with you!In this episode we talk about:-What is Wu Wei and how it's deceivingly simple-How we found it-Strategies on incorporating it-A little "get to know us" and how we view the world
Welcome to the first episode of our new podcast season 'Ancient Wisdom For Modern Living'. Each episode aims to provide practical insights and actionable advice, helping listeners incorporate ancient wisdom into their daily routines to achieve greater balance and wellness. In the opening series of the season 'Lessons From Ancient Philosophies,' host Anshu Bahanda will look back on timeless teachings, and talk about adapting them to address current personal and global challenges. The series will feature guests who are experts on topics such as Taoism, Zen Buddhism and Sufism. In this episode, Anshu Bahanda delves into the ancient philosophy of Taoism with Professor James Miller from Duke Kunshan University in China. Taoism is a philosophical and spiritual tradition that originated in ancient China all the way back in 500 BCE. Miller explains the core concepts of this ancient Chinese philosophy, focusing on Wu Wei (effortless action), which advocates for aligning with the natural flow of life rather than forcing one's will upon it. The discussion highlights how Taoism emphasises the importance of balance in all aspects of life, drawing parallels with other ancient philosophies such as Hinduism and Stoicism. He elaborates on the Taoist approach to conflict resolution, which involves deflecting aggression and seeking harmony rather than engaging in direct confrontation. He gives insights into how Taoism addresses ecological balance, underscoring the interconnectedness of human well-being and environmental health. This episode provides a comprehensive look at how Taoist principles can offer valuable guidance for living a balanced, harmonious life in this century. For a transcript of this show, go to https://wellnesscurated.life/taoism-and-the-art-of-balance-2/If you liked our episode, you can subscribe to our podcast on any of the major podcasting platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. We've already heard about Confucianism, The Hundred Schools, and the Yi Jing. In this episode, we look at Daoism. The life of Lao Tzu (Laozi) will be introduced along with the book he probably never wrote but which is ascribed to him anyway. This is the Tao Te Ching or Dao De Jing. Laozi was quite a character and by telling his story, it will give you the fundamentals to explore on your own what this philosophic thought is all about. We'll look at the Daoist concept of Wu Wei 无为 and the art of quiescence. We'll close with one of the earliest and greatest interpreters of the Daodejing, Wang Bi. In the History of Chinese Philosophy Part 13, we'll start looking at Zhuangzi and his classic book. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

During the Republican period (1912–1949) and after, many Chinese Buddhists sought inspiration from non-Chinese Buddhist traditions, showing a particular interest in esoteric teachings. What made these Buddhists dissatisfied with Chinese Buddhism, and what did they think other Buddhist traditions could offer? Which elements did they choose to follow, and which ones did they disregard? And how do their experiences recast the wider story of twentieth-century pan-Asian Buddhist reform movements? Based on a wide range of previously unexplored Chinese sources, Esoteric Buddhism in China: Engaging Japanese and Tibetan Traditions, 1912–1949 (Columbia UP, 2023) explores how esoteric Buddhist traditions have shaped the Chinese religious landscape. Wei Wu examines cross-cultural religious transmission of ideas from Japanese and Tibetan traditions, considering the various esoteric currents within Chinese Buddhist communities and how Chinese individuals and groups engaged with newly translated ideas and practices. She argues that Chinese Buddhists' assimilation of doctrinal, ritual, and institutional elements of Tibetan and Japanese esoteric Buddhism was not a simple replication but an active process of creating new meanings. Their visions of Buddhism in the modern world, as well as early twentieth-century discourses of nation building and religious reform, shaped the reception of esoteric traditions. By analyzing the Chinese interpretation and strategic adaptations of esoteric Buddhism, this book sheds new light on the intellectual development, ritual performances, and institutional formations of Chinese Buddhism in the twentieth century. To understand the broader forces that shaped the debates about esoteric Buddhism in modern China, please also check Wu Wei's article, "Buddhism and Superstition: Buddhist Apologetics in the Anti-Superstition Campaigns in Modern China," which is open access and can be found here. Uncover the mysteries of your body's energy systems with Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming, as we traverse the convergence of Eastern spiritual traditions and Western science. One of the most prolific authors in the world on martial arts and qigong, Dr. Yang is known for using his scientific background to introduce ancient qigong theories and practices to western audiences, with a martial arts background in White Crane Kung Fu, Long Fist Kung Fu, and Yang-style Taijiquan (Tai Chi). Dr. Yang joins us to reveal how the four categories of Qigong can escalate one's journey from healing to higher consciousness. He compares the Western understanding of the central nervous system and the Chinese concept of the central qi system, both attempting to elucidate the electrical dynamics inherent within the human body. He shares how women tend to have strong natural qi, which often makes them energetically sensitive and naturally suited for healing work. As Buddhism mingled with ancient Chinese beliefs, Dr. Yang guides us through the resulting religious Taoism and the influence of Indian yoga on Chinese Qigong. We delve into the anatomy of energy according to these traditions, exploring meridians, chakras and dantians. Dr. Yang enlightens us on how disciplines such as physics and mathematics parallel the spiritual practice of meditation, and how mastering the art of stillness can lead to profound personal transformation. He discusses the Taoist principle of Wu Wei, the effortless action of "doing non-doing" that emerges from a profound level of practice. Our conversation culminates in the exploration of the human potential for enlightenment and the untapped capabilities of our minds: considering the body as a bioelectric system or a bio-battery, we contemplate the notion of enlightenment as the result of increasing and balancing energy flow through its circuitry, awakening dormant brain cells and unlocking new frontiers of human consciousness. In 1982, Dr Yang established Yang's Martial Arts Association (YMAA) in Boston, MA. Since then the YMAA has grown into a network of 30 schools in over 15 countries with Dr. Yang travelling the world training students and giving seminars. Since 2005, Dr. Yang has resided in northern California where he trained a group of disciples in a multi-year comprehensive program from 2008-2018. Today, he continues to author books and teach seminars online and around the world.yangjwingming.comymaa.comLiked what you heard? Help us reach more people! With art from Beckie Masaki, we explore the transformative power of story circles within communities like Mending the Arc. Together, we'll reflect on exciting collaborations and the fresh growth they promise, mirroring the renewal we seek in our own lives. With the brushstrokes of Michael Heiser's "Double Negative" and the silent majesty of a winter forest as our backdrop, we reflect on the profound effects of art and nature on our spirit. Solitude, often a catalyst for creativity, becomes a central theme, inspiring introspection and aligning with our intentions for the year. We close with the soulful strains of "Sorrow" by Windows Seat as we also look forward to an enriching collaboration with the Democracy Center, continuing to weave a narrative that celebrates the courage found in both love and sorrow.**Limited Time** Join Belinda Liu and Omar Brownson on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles for our Empathy and Democracy live podcast and pop up art (and tea).
