Pastor Alexander continues the study on increasing in the anointing. In the Old Testament there were three levels of Anointing (Lepers, Priestly, and Kingly). In David's life there were also three times that he was anointed as king and speaks to us of three levels of kingly anointing available to us. In today's study Pastor Alexander will examine three times the Apostles were anointed with the Holy Spirit.

This morning, I want to turn our attention to Psalm 2. As many of you know, Psalm 2 is a companion to Psalm 1. Together, they introduce us to the Psalter giving us two checkpoints. Psalm 1 directs us in the way of discipleship of living God. He is our shepherd. We are his sheep. Have we planted ourselves firmly in the stream of living water and in the company of the righteous that we might enjoy the blessed life? By contrast, Psalm 2, which is, by the way, among the most quoted Psalms in the New Testament, steps back and considers the bigger picture. Why is that? No surprises here, but the world around us is chaotic, unjust, and unpredictable. If our faith is to be resilient, we need more than the stream of living water, we also need an orientation to this world's chaos and tragedy. You ask, “Is that possible?” Of course, it's possible. With God, all things are possible (Matt. 19:26). Unfortunately, though, all too often we Christians forget to take with us the compass that is Psalm 2.
A dispute between Abaye and Rava whether designating an item - in this case, a shroud - is sufficient to prohibit it from common use, or whether that designating is not enough to do so (Abaye prohibits; Rava permits). Plus, examples (pro and con), though in the end, the halakhah follows Rava. Also, with regard to a condemned person, the Gemara addresses the differences between a king's execution vs. when such an event is overseen by the court. With examples from the Bible - eg: King Achav and Navot, plus others.

This coming evening, we come to not only a known and well-loved text, the announcement to the young virgin who would be the mother of the Messiah, Mary. The announcement begins with these words - "rejoice highly favored one." Mary was chosen even before the foundations of the world were laid to be the one who would carry the Messiah, the miracle Son who came in the flesh to deliver His people from their sins. Such news laid heavy upon her heart, for it was not only grand but weighty new for Mary would play a key role not only in carrying and giving birth to the Messiah, but she would be His mother. Despite her essential and important role, it would be Jesus who would ultimately redeem not only His own mother, but as the future King and Head of the Church, He would bear the Name that indicated His role of Kingly and Priestly Savior of the World. Mary's Son would be her King, Mary's Son is our King, and His rule shall never end.Worship with us at Reformation OPC Gastonia! Each Lord's Day9:30am & 5:30pm203 Rhyne Oakland Road, Gastonia, NC, 28098(704) 931-8094ropcgastonia@gmail.com
Jeremiah is being given a promise: the house of David, which seems to be at a very low point, is going to produce a Branch. Isaiah tells us a branch will come from the stump of Jesse. And Zechariah also gives us this image of a righteous branch. In the ancient world, and especially among royalty, the idea of a branch always refers to a royal line. This is the Kingly line. This is the Messianic promise God made to David in II Samuel 7: You will not build me a house, but I will build you a house, and someone will sit on your throne forever. We are looking back, and we are looking forward. Jeremiah in a hopeless situation is promised that a Branch will come forth, and by this branch, We will know the LORD is our righteousness. Psalm 72 Worksheet This is the last Psalm of Book 2 of the Psalms (Psalms 42-72). Only this Psalm and Psalm _________________ are attributed to Solomon. Jacob prophesied in Genesis 49:8-12 that Judah would become the ruling tribe of Israel, and that the Messiah King would come from that tribe. While David was king He was given the Davidic Covenant by Yahweh. God told David that his son Solomon would get to build the Temple, and that a _______________________ Son of David in the family line would be Israel's Messiah King. Some of the words in this Psalm seem to be Solomon's prayer for himself to be a good king like his father David. Other words in this Psalm point to the only ___________________________ King, Jesus the Messiah. Perhaps this was written for Solomon's Kingly coronation. Do you remember what Solomon had prayed for when God came to him in 1 Kings 3 and told him to ask for anything he wanted? ____________________________ to govern God's people. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of yours. -1 Kings 3:9 Write out their own ____________________ of God's law. Deuteronomy 17:14-20 The word judge in the Old Testament referred to those who administered the Law as rulers. The King was to lead the people to live rightly and to make sure the most vulnerable among them were not done ___________________________. Proverbs 31:1-9 Mountains are often scary places to be, and those that live there are often known for doing their own thing. Solomon prays there will even be Shalom in places not __________________ for shalom. By the way, did you know that peace is in Solomon's Hebrew name? Shelomo wanted to bring Shalom in It is good for kings and those in authority to think about how God has allowed them to be in position not for themselves but to ________________________ (serve) to others. Romans 13:1-7 The __________________________ character of the Messiah's reign V. 5-9 Temporary kings that fear God recognize who the ___________________ King is, and how His reign is eternal, not temporal! Micah 5:1-4 Like beneficial rain, the Lord ____________________________ His subjects with benevolence, with what they need to live. Verses 7-8 definitely go beyond anything Solomon experienced to what the Bible says about the Messiah. Isaiah 9:6-7 Solomon's rule foreshadows a ___________________________ rule to come V. 10ff Verse 10 is Solomon's way of speaking about the greatness of Israel and Israel's King ___________________ north, south, east and west. 2 Chronicles 9:21 records the Tarshish tribute; 1 Kings 10:1 Sheba's contribution. Revelation 21:22-27 The end of verse 14 makes us think of Psalm 116:15, but these words make us think particularly of those who are persecuted and even _________________________ for their faith in God. The things said in verses 16-18 make us think of the millennial rule to come of Jesus Christ. Verses 18-19 fittingly end the Psalm with __________________________. Verse 20 does not mean there are no more Psalms of David after this. But the majority of the Psalms in Book 1 and 2 of the Psalms were by David. Book 1 - 37 of the 41 Psalms by David (90%) Book 2 - 18 of the 31 Psalms by David (58%) Book 3 - 1 of 17 Psalms by David (6%) Book 4 - 1 of 17 Psalms by David (6%) Book 5 - 15 of 44 Psalms by David (34%) It may be as simple as that the remaining Psalms by David are not as much prayer Psalms as praise Psalms. I prefer to think that Solomon is saying we have Books 1 and 2 of the Psalms because of David writing Psalms. We are going to keep adding Psalms now that David has died. That understanding also makes it natural that they added Psalms by David as they ______________ in the later Books of the Psalms.

This is a special edition to explore the Supreme Court's opinion in Trump v. United States, the presidential immunity case. The Supreme Court Monday granted former presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his "conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority," and presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts. The devil is in the details.I spoke with Professor Harold Krent from the Chicago-Kent College of Law, and former federal prosecutor David Weinstein, a partner at Jones Walker. Hal and I talked about the demerits of the opinion, and David and I discussed what the opinion means for the 3 open criminal cases against the former president. Jesus says that John the Baptizer is the final prophet in the line of Elijah, a man of deep Kingdom allegiance and profound moral courage in a day of spiritual decay, and of whom Jesus says “there has arisen no one greater.” Which makes Jesus' next words all the more shocking: “Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” The least in the Kingdom of God — the simplest and humblest of people who knows the Kingly reign of Jesus — has come into a realm of which John could only catch a hazy glimpse!
Solomon now turns to the monarchy and bestows wisdom about leadership, behavior, and speech. He advises kings to be just in their judgments and mindful of their words' impact. The passage warns against pride, urging humility, and actions that align with righteousness. These proverbs emphasize the importance of gracious and thoughtful speech, likening wise words to honey that brings sweetness to the soul and healing to the body. The Rev. Ben Dose, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia, IA, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Proverbs 16:10-24. Step into the spiritually rich landscape of the Book of Proverbs, a text divinely inspired and attributed to Solomon, the sage king endowed by God with unsurpassed wisdom. This ancient scripture begins with heartfelt lessons from a father to a son, laying a foundation of moral and ethical guidance before unfolding into a collection of timeless proverbs. It uniquely personifies wisdom and folly as two paths that stand before humanity, offering a choice between a life filled with virtue, fear of the Lord, and understanding, and one marred by shortsighted pleasures and foolishness. Proverbs serves as a compass for those seeking to walk in righteousness, offering insights that resonate deeply with the human experience, guiding us toward a life of purpose and discernment according to God's will.

In addition to Christ's priestly office, lay people are called to participate in Christ's prophetic and kingly offices. They take part in Christ's prophetic office by evangelizing and proclaiming Christ by word and with the testimony of their lives. Fr. Mike explains that the laity participate in Christ's kingly office in their hearts. They do this when they rule themselves and conquer sin, acting as virtuous leaders in the Church and society. Fr. Mike also reminds us that lay people should strive to be guided by Christian conscience in all their actions in the Church and society. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 904-913. Nebuchadnezzar has a troubling dream that he commands his pagan advisors to both tell him and interpret for him. When they admit that they cannot, he is prepared to execute them all. Daniel intercedes on their behalf and prays, along with his three friends, that the LORD will make the matter known. The LORD answers their prayer, and Daniel gives the credit entirely to God as he tells Nebuchadnezzar both the dream and its interpretation. The statue made of different materials stands for the coming kingdoms of men, starting with Babylon and going through history to Rome. The stone that breaks the statue to pieces is the coming kingdom of God, which will be established forever. Rev. Jeffrey Ries, pastor at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tacoma, WA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Daniel 2:1-49. "God's Kingdom Endures Forever” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Daniel. Although God's people were exiled in Babylon, the LORD remained the true King. He strengthened His people for faithful confession in the face of idolatry, and through prophetic visions and dreams revealed that He would establish His everlasting Kingdom. This points to Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, who reigns over us and all creation.
Psalm 60 Worksheet It's to the chief musician, as ______________ total Psalms are! There is something unique in the heading, the words “for teaching.” This is the only occurrence of that in the Psalms! I wonder based on the tone of the Psalm if David wants to teach something to _________________, the General he had a complicated relationship with! The events referred to in the heading probably refers to events described in 2 Samuel 8 and 1 Chronicles 18. Victory feels like defeat when the Lord isn't ______________________ V. 1-3 But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. -2 Sam. 11:27b And God was displeased with this thing; therefore He struck Israel. -1 Chr. 21:7 Those who are especially sensitive to things that displease the Lord need to remember to always start their evaluation with __________________________. Help us to remember we represent you, Lord V. 4-5 Those who love the Lord are called to both fear Him and revere Him. The fear of the Lord helps us repent and line up with what He wants of us. That leads to a life where others can see us _______________ God reverently. David doesn't want to just wear a Star of David t-shirt here – he wants Israel's talk to _____________ their walk – he wants to worship in Spirit and in Truth like John 4:24 calls for! Help us to remember that You gave ________________ victories, Lord V. 6-8 The entire north of the country is sometimes referred to as Ephraim because of the importance of the tribes descended from Joseph. The other tribe that overshaded them all was Judah, the Kingly tribe. David's point is that God is over ________________ part of Israel, all 12 tribes. Moab is a neighbor to the east of Israel, Edom is a neighbor to the southeast, and Philistia were neighbors to the southwest. All had acted out in the past against Israel, and were rightfully subdued and paying ______________________ to Israel under David's rule. As God's nation, it was even more ____________ for Israel to fear and trust God than it was to be military ready. Help us to remember that You give the __________________ victory, Lord V. 9-12 As Obadiah indicates, Edom as a nation never got over Esau's losing the blessing to Jacob, and as a people constantly made Israel it's _____________________. David entrusts this ongoing mess to God's help. David asks God here to help them overcome trouble, some of which they may have brought on themselves by acting in the _______________________. David ends the Psalm with a great prayer for God's help in doing God's right things in God's right ways, acting valiantly through faith, and leaving the _____________________ to God.
