Amtrak reports that overall demand for passenger rail is soaring as yearly ridership totals approach pre-pandemic levels. But in California, the story is different. Popular west coast lines are losing riders and remain challenged by underinvestment and rules that give track priority to freight trains. In addition, increasingly powerful storms and rising seas threaten Amtrak's infrastructure: Southern California's Pacific Surfliner has repeatedly suspended service for emergency repairs. As part of Forum's In Transit series, we look at the future of Amtrak in California. Guests: Ethan Elkind, director of the Climate Program at the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment, UC Berkeley School of Law; host, the Climate Break podcast Tom Zoellner, English professor, Chapman University; editor-at-large, LA Review of Books; author, "Train: Riding the Rails That Created the Modern World -from the Trans-Siberian to the Southwest Chief"
This week, we're joined by Southwest's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Ryan Green to talk about the airline's big change this week! Thank you to our sponsor, Medjet! The membership service that protects you if you get sick or injured while traveling.

Nashville based rock outfit 7Descent might just be starting out on their path in the rock world, but if enthusiasm and talent are anything to go by these guys are already two steps ahead of the pack.Blending all forms of rock ranging from classic to hard, 7Descent have struck upon a timeless sound but tweaked it enough so that their own stamp of individuality is left dripping from each note. With the recent release of their single “Southwest Chief, the entire band sat down for a chat with HEAVY to discuss the single and the band's bright future."Southwest Chief is actually a train,” began vocalist Milo. “It's an end track train that you take from California all the way to Albuquerque in Mexico, and so I would take this train once a year and I would get to see some of the rich landscapes that America had. The song is about my nostalgia with that train ride, but it's also about life and all the small moments that define us and the memories that we hold on to."In the full interview, the band runs us through Southwest Chief in more detail, their path to becoming a band, future new music, forming as a band during COVID and the difficulties that created, finding the musical balance with such a wide array of influences and more.

Welcome to another story from America: In this episode, I want to tell you about a trip I took across the country and back. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
We are big fans of trains and the previous episode focused on the Trails and Rails program, which we were able to experience on a 2017 trip on the Southwest Chief. In 2020, we took two other long-distance trains: the Sunset Limited in January and the California Zephyr in March. Amtrak has 30 train routes throughout the United States which cover 500 destinations in 46 states, offering some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Train travel has been likened to a “land cruise” and we definitely considered the train trips part of the vacation, exemplifying the adage that it is not about the destination but the journey. We appreciated the opportunity to not only learn about the history and geology of the U.S. but also to get to know our fellow passengers and Amtrak staff. While Covid-19 has altered operations significantly, we encourage our listeners to consider a long-distance train ride in the future.
