CALVIN & HOBBES. Yea, that’s probably all we need to say right? The amazing strip by Bill Watterson that ran for only a decade but changed the face of comics and comic strips is STILL revered to this day. And we’re gonna talk the $%#& out of it. It’s philosophical origins, the newspaper strip business, Watterson’s fights with the syndicate (not the mob), contemporaries of the time, and realizing that Calvin’s Dad is really cool. The story of Exodus isn't just about God rescuing Israel from slavery, it's about how God rescues us. In this message from our series The Story of Redemption, we look at how God reveals Himself as Redeemer, King, and Father through the Passover, the wilderness, and the covenant. Redemption isn't just about being freed, it's about being brought into relationship with Him.Micah Watterson traces the thread of redemption from the blood on the doorposts to the blood of Christ and reminds us that the God who delivers always finishes what He starts.

Hello and welcome to The Rob Burgess Show. I am, of course, your host, Rob Burgess. On this our 280th episode, our returning guest is… me! I have done nearly two dozen previous solo episodes of this podcast. For the complete list, check the show notes. I am a 35-time award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in print, radio, online and television. I am currently a Reporter for Financial Planning Magazine. Most recently, I was Technology Reporter for Wealth Management Magazine; Editor of the Wabash Plain Dealer; News Editor of NUVO; Managing Editor of the Indiana Lawyer; and City Editor, Opinion Page Editor and Editorial Board Member of the Kokomo Tribune. I was also a reporter at WFHB, the Times-Mail, The Reporter-Times, Ukiah Daily Journal and Ukiah Valley Television. I'm also the proprietor of the podcast, The Rob Burgess Show. This is going to be a very special episode. It's about a field trip I took in fifth grade. You can watch it on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJJ4i-oy4J8 Here's a House of Burgess column I wrote when I was News Editor of NUVO published Feb. 23, 2019 titled, “Past as Prologue”: https://web.archive.org/web/20190224000411/https://www.nuvo.net/voices/burgess-past-as-prologue/article_0a36f1f2-36c3-11e9-9828-a75a4166eb4c.html Here's the column by Justin Watterson published Feb. 24, 2018 on his Wordpress blog, The Wattersonian, titled, “The Remains of Oliver Burnett and Lessons from the Woods”: https://wattersonian.wordpress.com/2018/02/24/the-remains-of-oliver-burnett-and-lessons-from-the-woods/ A few weeks ago, I found the notebook from the field trip in my garage. Here's what I wrote Oct. 26, 1993: “Our Centary [Cemetary] Field Trip “We left at 9:24 [a.m.] to private little spot with 3 gravesites. To get here go down Highway 60 to the third road on the left. Go down till you see an open field on the left is a hill climb up it until you have almost reaches the top. Go into the woods and when you see 3 stones. Mr. Watterson told us about the importantce [importance] of written history. “Then we put holes in the ground. Then we posts in the ground. Then Mr. Watterson talked about folklore. Then we put some hooks in the posts. After that we put a long, long chain that we put around the posts. Then we asked questions. We went back down the hill. Then we went back to the bus. We retraced our steps there. As we went home, Mr. Watterson told us about a guy who killed his wife and 2 brothers a hair pin. I did not believe it. We got back to school at 10:40 a.m. This field trip was very, very fun and interesting.” I asked Justin if he knew any more about that last bit. He said: “I should have known the story you were referring to. That grave is an Isom woman and I think she was related to the perpetrator in question. When Van Sanders used to tell those stories to Dad when he was alive (his family was an original plot owner there in that area so he knew the history) he always referred to the hill as "Ant'ony Hill." I found census records for I believe an Anthony Isom. The story was that his wife fell disabled (invalid) and he got tired of taking care of her so he took and axe and chopped her up. Finding records of that is pretty much impossible but that's what you're referring to I think. “There were a bunch of mixed-race folks who settled right there in that area and I always kind of guessed that it was because the old Indian boundary line was right there going through that area way back in the day. Isom was a very common name among them and they mostly came from Virginia where other such settlements existed. There were notable other settlements of free people of color around the state back in the 19th century. “It's an interesting wormhole to go down. What defined "black" on the census was kind of crazy. I found some people on the 1850 census who were market as black but then ten years later they were white.” Now, let's travel 32 years in the past. linktr.ee/therobburgessshow
Today, I’m talking to Meggan Watterson—theologian and author of The Girl Who Baptized Herself—about the importance of being embodied, the search for self, where we derive power, and the way that culture is edited and passed down to us. Watterson tells the incredible stories behind the Gospel of Mary (and what happened to Mary Magdalene), and the Acts of Paul and Thecla (and what happened to Thecla). We also explore where my work meets hers, and the birth of the seven powers, which become the seven cardinal vices, or the seven deadly sins. For the show notes, head over to my Substack. We now come to The Calvin and Hobbes Portable Compendium Set 3, practically the halfway point of seven planned sets from Andrews McMeel aiming to reprint the entire run of Bill Watterson's iconic comic strip, albeit in miniature form. Once again, I'd recommend going back in time and reading (or re-reading?) my review of the first set, if only because the history of Watterson's battles with his syndicate helps put both his beloved strip - and these new editions - in some context.

One of Springfield's best-known claims to fame is that it is the birthplace of basketball. However, the city also played an important role in the early development of the sport of football. It was here that many of the sport's rules were established, and it was also here that the sport nearly met a premature demise due to a particularly violent college football game. In this episode, Western Mass History podcast host Derek Strahan is joined by local historian and football official Tim Casey for a discussion of Springfield's involvement in the early history of football. The Days are Just Packed by Bill Watterson, came out in 1993. For Bryant, he was collecting as many of these volumes containg the adventures of Calvin and Hobbes as he could. Visual mediums powerfully share big, sometimes uncomfortable, and often whimsical truths. Bryant was drawn to the iconic art and the way Hobbes, Calvin's stuffed tiger, takes on a personality of his own when only Calvin is around. In their adventures, Bryant found wonder and new frontiers through reading. Watterson's two protagonists have a lot to share with us: anoying teachers, big questions in all life stages, and of course -- soaking the next door neighbor with a waterballoon. Join us as we revisit this iconic duo and think back to your own experiences with comics, any that you still remember? Nick and Phil are back with a special episode live from Sheffield, and they're joined by two brilliant guests in father and son, Mark and Ryan Watterson. There's plenty of chat about all the best of 25 matches played in the World Championship at the Crucible over the last week, from the second round and quarter-final stages, plus the latest news from the semi-finals. There's also plenty from Mark and Ryan too, including Mark's great love of this championship since he first came to the Crucible since 1977 and Ryan's new role as a media officer with the WPBSA. We also talk about the massive contribution made by another member of the Watterson family, Mark's late uncle Mike. He was first and foremost a promoter in snooker, being instrumental in the tournament moving to Sheffield. Alongside that, he was a fine player and commentator. We reflect on that and also talk about some of Mike's roles in a number of other sports, including football, darts and bowls. Keep your thoughts coming to us and we''ll catch up with all your correspondence in our final episode of the season next week. Embark on a transformational guided meditation with bestselling author and feminist theologian Meggan Watterson. You'll journey into the depths of your heart to reveal the truth of who you are, to anchor into love, and to reclaim your true power. Meggan will guide you to the realization that being human means being the bridge between the created material world and the creating spiritual world. Just like Mary Magdalene, you will listen inwardly to discover how to be completely embodied and fully divine, leading you to the ultimate power source that you hold as a human—that of infinite love. If you enjoy this meditation, we think you'll love The Mary Magdalene Oracle, a 44-card deck & guidebook of Mary's gospel. Each card is meant to remind us of the truth that we are comprised of a massively human ego as well as a divinely merciful soul so that we can do the life-altering inner-work of bringing love to where it has never been before. The deck releases on July 18, but you can preorder it today and receive an exclusive free gift at hayhouse.com/mary.
Austin Watterson talks about his path to becoming a factory mechanic for Maximus Vohland, what he learned along the way, and what he enjoys most.
