“Comedy and whimsy feel like the foundational principles of Doldrick's.” In Season 6, episode 12, we chat with Mike Dold and Rick George, two of the co-owners of Doldrick's Escape Room in Orlando, Fl. Their games are fan favorites amongst enthusiasts, in particular because of their blend of humor, whimsy, beautiful sets, and fun gameplay. Every single REA review of the Doldrick's escape rooms talks about how funny they were, with Theresa Wagner writing that Spoopy's Ghoulish Graveyard “had [her] laughing so hard [she] was in tears.” In fact, their newest game, Crazy Train: The Ballad Of Skeemin' Plotz inspired Lisa to write what David calls “her finest work” as an escape room reviewer. At this point, you're probably thinking, “these are crazy names for an escape room,” and I'd have to agree. My favorite is “Red Sled Redemption: Hollie Jolly Holiday Hubcap Repair”, which is an escape room title of epically insane proportions, but absolutely fits the Doldrick's brand of madcap comedy. Besides talking to us about their inspirations for their games, my favorite part is when Rick opens up about the difficulties of running an escape room while raising a young family. I really appreciated his willingness to be vulnerable, and I think it's valuable for other escape room owners to know that everyone has the same struggles. Among his varied interests, leading Victorian literature scholar and prison educator Professor John Plotz revisits forgotten novels, giving them a second life, and explores the redeeming value of books for former prisoners. Professor of Humanities at Brandeis University, Plotz is the editor of the B-Sides series on Public Books. His first book Portable Property examines the objects Victorian Britons took with them when they traveled abroad, to persuade them their national identity was intact. Professor Plotz is giving this year's University of Otago Dalziel lecture on August 25 in Dunedin, related to his current work about science fiction and satire; how it makes you think by making you laugh.

Throughout history, pioneers have blazed trails for new ways of life. Lewis, Clark, and Sacajawea headed out west, Thomas Edison lit up our lives, and Rosa Parks showed everyone that it doesn't matter where you sit on the bus. Today's show subject is one of the pioneers of the entertainment world and changed the template of TV forever, Jerry Springer. Love him or hate him, Jerry Springer was must see TV back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Kids rushed home from school to tune in to the latest hair-pulling, clothes-ripping fistfight as parents everywhere cringed once they realized what their kids were watching. With Jerry's past primarily in law and politics, how did the former Mayor of Cincinnati become one of the most hated men on TV? Did he know the impact he would have on society as a whole? Would you try to get Jerry Beads if you went to a taping of the show? We'll dive into all this and more in the Jerry Springer episode of AHC Podcast. The Betches begin today's episode asking some real world questions, like Is AI taking over the world? Although, a cook GPT could seriously solve world hunger.. After literally discussing the meaning of life, the women dive into this week's pop culture news, beginning with Tom Brady's *official* retirement announcement– for real this time. Sami then debriefs the de-Influencing trend and wtf is going on in the beauty world, which spurs the three gals to share their hot takes on products that are 100% overrated. They move on to discuss rich people problems, aka the Peltz-Beckham's wedding planner deposit lawsuit, and wrap up with a heated tv/movie debrief all about Tar, and Pamela Anderson's new doc? The contractor who *allegedly* stole Pam Anderson's sex tape is for sure being sent straight to the Caymans. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The passionate people involved with making movies at Plotz Hole Studios hail from all the many corners of the universe, and beyond. Genre: Science Fiction It's the 250th episode. Yay! Excerpt: Martin Plotz glanced down at the photographs that Trudy had placed on his desk. He took a magnifying lens to one of them and bent over it. He frowned and glanced up at Trudy with the expression that she expected him to have on his face, annoyed but certain disbelief. “Spider-snake?” “Yes, the story comes from a reputable news outlet.” Trudy flipped through her notebook. “Let me guess, the Curious Cryptid Weekly?” CREDITSStory: “The Plotz Hole” Copyright © 2018 by Nila L. I've had a lot of chats on this podcast with people who've become friends after the show but rarely do I get to chat to a friend I had before getting them on the show (see my chat with Chavonne about Fierce Fattie or with Pascale about The Fat Lady Sings to see a couple I have done), but this episode is with a friend. I met Haz Cady when my podcast was very new and we've had some great chats ever since (almost three years worth of chatting about books!). This episode is basically an opportunity for you listeners to sit in with us as we talk about Fat on Film by Barbara Plotz. I know you're going to love the relaxed vibe. We talk about a lot of things, including:Haz's journey to fat acceptance (in three parts...like a book...get it?)Haz's eating disorder and what food means nowMelissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson as our only fat representation (...and Queen Latifah but we talk about how her representation is different than the other two)Masculinity in film or how men have to walk a body image line tooFemininity in film or how femininity always comes back to menThe lines fat actors have to walkThe use of a larger body as an inherently funny body in comedyThe way the camera angles, the sound effects, the choreography allow for the audience to laugh at the actor's bodyIs there any attempt to soften the fat phobia in film? The trope of the fat person eatingA discussion about Harry PotterFat people as outsiders and deviations from the normFat, people of color in filmThe way this book has changed our film watching experiences FOREVER!Difference between film and theatre representationKeep Reading Everyone!Haz's LinksHaz's TwitterArchive of our Own PageFat Girl Book Club Podcast LinksFearless PodcastingFat Girl Book Club on IGEmail: fatgirlbookclubpod@gmail.comBook RecommendationsFattily Ever After by Stephanie YeboahYou Have the Right to Remain Fat by Virgie TovarEpisode LinksSadie Collins articleYou Should See the Other Guy PodcastUndead Girl Gang by Lily AndersonFat Girl on a Plane by Kelly DeVos
Our first August rebroadcast was John and Pu's 2019 interview with SF superstar Cixin Liu (you may want to re-listen to that episode before this one!). Here, they reflect on the most significant things that Liu had said, and to ponder the political situation for contemporary Chinese writers who come to the West to discuss their work. They consider whether our world is like a cabinet in a basement, and what kind of optimism or pessimism might be available to science fiction writers. They compare the interview to a recent profile of Liu in The New Yorker, and ponder the advantages and disadvantages of pressing writers to weigh in on the hot-button topics of the day. This one ended up being more aimless than intended, but Dimes boy and Judas boy have a discussion about the Aboriginal Antifa driver who attacked the Freedom Convoy trucker protest, extraterrestrials creating strategic illusions that appear to people with specifically developed brains, skiers getting their balls obliterated, the naivety of scientists being comparable to malevolence, turning esoteric civilizational goals into actionable data, and working to create prisons less hostile to nonviolent political dissidents who may end up in there (specifically racial and political targeting.)

Each week, Joey, Nathan and Kelly revisit an episode of Animaniacs in the order in which they first premiered. Today Joey and Nathan get together once again to talk about an Animaniacs comic book! Its issue 11 featuring the Brain using a duplication machine and the Warners traveling to Austria to visit Castle Frankenstein! Special Giveaway! Do you want a Goodfeathers QFig signed by Maurice LaMarche, John Mariano, Chick Vennera, and Tom Ruegger? Then just leave a positive 5 star rating and review on Apple Podcasts or iTunes! We will select a one listener review at random at the end of January! Leave your review today and listen later on February 3rd to see if you're the winner! Brain for Brain The Brain is tired of Pinky messing up his plans to take over the world so he kicks Pinky out of the lab and uses a duplication ray to create a clone! But "Brain #2" doesn't want to be an assistant and steals the ray. Brain realizes he made a mistake in firing Pinky and begs him to return. Before you know it, there are hundreds of Brains in the lab and they all want Pinky for their assistant! How will Pinky and the Brain get rid of all the duplicates? Nathan and Joey discuss their favorite moments in this very funny comic. The quality of the art and writing is quite good and the story could have even been good enough to be on TV! Frankly Frankenstein The Warners hitch a ride in a crate traveling to Austria and make their way to Castle Frankenstein. The only problem is, Doctor Frankenstein is actually Dr. Frankensniff and he looks a lot like an evil Dr. Scratchansniff. To make things even more confusing Igor looks like Hello Nurse and the Monster looks like Mr. Plotz! This comic has a surprise ending that is slightly amusing, but doesn't have the gags that one would expect from a Warners cartoon. Join the Party! Each week, Joey, Nathan and Kelly revisit an episode of Animaniacs in the order in which they first premiered. They discuss their favorite jokes, gags, and discuss all the cultural references they can find. Today your hosts discuss an Animaniacs hip-hop musical originally released in 1995 as a read-along book based upon "A Christmas Plotz." Preview for Next Week Before getting into the discussion of today’s album the hosts take some time to discuss next week's episode! Last week Joey drove to Los Angeles to reunite the cast of the Goodfeathers at Tom Ruegger’s house! That's right, next week you'll get to hear Chick Vennera, John Mariano and Maurice LaMarche along with Animaniacs creator, Tom Ruegger! This was the first time they had all been together in over 20 years! It's going to be an episode you won't want to miss, so subscribe to our podcast so you don't miss it! A Christmas Plotz Hip-Hopera Musical Produced in part by rapper Kool Moe Dee, this is an album that was originally released on a cassette tape with a read-along book. Later, it was re-released on CD with the CD booklet taking the place of the book. The short album features the original Animaniacs cast “rapping” the storyline of “A Christmas Plotz.” The catchy songs by Randy Rogel are gone. In their place are some moody rap songs that don't always fit the Christmas spirit. The hosts discuss some of the main songs and some samples are played. Overall it's a pretty bad album. But how bad is it? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out! What do you think? Was this album as bad as we thought or did you like what you head? Each week, Joey, Nathan and Kelly revisit an episode of Animaniacs in the order in which they first premiered. They discuss their favorite jokes, gags, and discuss all the cultural references they can find. Today the hosts discuss "Hooray for North Hollywood" Part Two. The Warners are successful! They make their own movie but unfortunately for Thaddeus Plotz, it's not with Warner Bros. Plotz gets fired and it's up to the Warners to save him. L.A. Dot We are given a preview of the Warner's film and get to see the big musical number! Dot mistakes a bus with LADOT written on it as a salute to her being in Los Angeles and the cutest celebrity in Hollywood. A sample of the original draft of the song is played from Animaniacs in Concert. You can see the full video here or by going to the Animanicast YouTube page. You Gotta Do the Schmooze While waiting to see Mr Plotz, the Warners teach Wakko the art of schmoozing people in Hollywood to get what you want. Wakko doesn’t quite get it, which leads to some funny lyrics and explanations. It's New Years Eve The Warners save Mr. Plotz from homelessness and celebrate the New Year with a fun song. We’re On Our Way to Go See Mr Plotz. The Warners have finished writing their screenplay, so they sing a song about Plotz as they take the screenplay to him. During the song almost half the cast of the Animaniacs is shown, and even features a cameo from Steven Spielberg! Unsurprisingly, this makes Kelly very happy. You Gotta Do the Schmooze While waiting to see Mr Plotz, the Warners teach Wakko the art of schmoozing people in Hollywood to get what you want. Wakko doesn’t quite get it, which leads to some funny lyrics and explanations. There's Only One of You Once in the meeting with Mr Plotz, the Warners are told it would be bad if they sang, which of course leads them to sing. This song has nothing to do with the episode, but it's so good that the hosts love it anyway. Joey mentions that the premise is very similar to "Singin' in the Rain" where a pitch meeting turns into an unrelated song and dance number. "Variety Speak" (2nd version) Once Plotz kicks the Warners out of the office, they decide they need to make the movie themselves. All they need is some money. Cue the "Variety Speak" song with new lyrics and animation. Once the song is done, the Warners find out there will be a Hollywood gala, which is bound to have people to star in the movie, or even produce it. And that’s how the episode leaves off! Join us next week for the exciting conclusion to "Hooray for North Hollywood." Join the Party! Head on over to Discord.Animanicast.com today to join our RetroZap discussion group. Crowds, Selves, and Various Forms of Detachment While we can’t know each other completely, we’re obsessed with guessing and modern literature provides numerous examples. Jesse interviews Dr. John Plotz, Professor of Victorian Literature at Brandeis University and author of “The Crowd” (2000), “Portable Property” (2008) and “Semi-Detached” (2017). For Plotz, crowds, keepsakes, politics, and novels represent some of the ways we grapple with how our own inner lives relate to those of others. We can also find ourselves estranged from ourselves during an aesthetic experience. Jesse and John discuss crowds, Baudelaire, the political dimensions of Victorian literature, public and private spaces, mementos, cave paintings, intention, how we give private objects meanings, our relationship with history, the line between reality and fiction, the psychology of the modern novel, and finally, H.G. Wells and why science fiction is so cool. What We’re Reading John recommends “The Absolute at Large” by Karel Čapek Music “Think” by Lee Rosevere Bookings is recorded at the University of King’s College by Mark Pineo and produced by Paul MacKay and Jesse Hiltz. Each and every week, Joey, Nathan and Kelly revisit an episode of Animaniacs in the order in which they first premiered. They discuss their favorite jokes, gags, and discuss all the cultural references they can find in "My Mother the Squirrel," "The Party," "Oh! " Say Can You See," and "The Twelve Days of Christmas." My Mother the Squirrel/The Party/Oh! Say Can You See/The Twelve Days of Christmas Song My Mother the Squirrel Little Blue Bird from the cartoon "Wild Blue Yonder" returns but this time he mistakes Slappy for his mother. This is a very cute segment, with two Rueggers in it and with plenty for the hosts to discuss The Party The Warners are having a fancy pants party and just about everyone is invited. Plotz doesn’t want to go, until he hears that “Steven” is going to be there. When guests arrive, Wakko is wearing pants! And Christopher Walken is there. Plotz is not having fun at the party, and is just about to leave when Steven finally arrives… just not the Steven he was expecting. This is a fun episode, and you can bet Kelly was excited to talk about Steven. Oh! Say Can You See The Flame is back and this time he is helping write the Star Spangled Banner. Luke Ruegger's appearance makes this the third Ruegger brother to appear in this episode! The Twelve Days of Christmas Song Little Blue Bird performs a special rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas with the Animaniacs orchestra. The hosts discuss the backstory of this short, but very cute segment. Join the Party! Head on over to Discord.Animanicast.com today to join our RetroZap discussion group. Each and every week, your hosts revisit an episode of the series in the order in which they first premiered. They discuss their favorite jokes, gags, and discuss all the cultural references they can find! In this special episode, Joey and Nathan get to discuss another comic book issue of Animaniacs. This comes after the hosts had their own issues with recording the podcast for episode 75. But no worries! Nathan and Joey also find some more emails for our ongoing Rob Paulsen segment, and share their thoughts of the Freak-A-Con. We've Got More Issues (of Animaniacs Comics) The Cover of Issue #5 This cover has almost everyone on it, and all the characters are riding a roller coaster, and it has nothing to do with the comic!!! Oh well, Nathan and Joey discuss it anyways... Not-So-Model Mother It’s the 19th century, and the perfect weather for a picnic. When Dot finally finds a spot to eat, her brothers pop out of the basket having eaten her food. Before she gets too mad though, they spot an artist literally painting the landscape, and find out it’s James Whistler, a not famous painter. He laments that he cannot afford a model to paint, so the Warners offer to model for free. Unfortunately when brought back to is studio, they won’t stay still, and trash the place. Things only get worse for Whistler, when his mom comes into party. All she wants to do is have fun, and won’t let her son paint. Luckily, the Warners come up with a plan to have everyone play musical chairs, when Whistler’s Mom wins the game, she finds out she is glued to the chair, letting Whistler paint his now famous painting. A Wing and a Prayer The year is 1903, and the Wright brothers have just built their plane, but neither one is willing to fly it. Luckily the Warners are in earshot, and get recruited for the job. Dot gets sucked up in the propellers, and Wakko immediately crashes the plane. After it gets rebuilt, it’s Yakko's turn, but he accidentally knocks the Wright brothers onto plane, and they fly off in the sunset. Nathan and Joey find their favorite jokes and whether or not they could see this as an actual episode. The Trouble With Trainees Plotz has had it with the Warners destroying the studio, so they are off to boot camp with Ralph to learn how to be a guard. After some initial difficulties, with Ralph getting mauled by lions, and hit with a security gate, The Warners actually seemed to be taking to their training, but as soon as Plotz starts to relax, he finds out that the Warners have barricaded the lot, and are not letting anyone in, no matter what. Darbi talks to David Plotz (CEO Atlas Obscura) about his transition from Slate to Atlas Obscura. David Plotz, the former editor of Slate, is host of the Political Gabfest and is also CEO of Atlas Obscura. Before joining the magazine in 1996, Plotz was a senior editor and staff writer for the Washington City Paper. Plotz has written for the New York Times Magazine, Harper's, Rolling Stone, GQ, the New Republic, and the Washington Post, among other publications. He is the author of The Genius Factory: The Curious History of the Nobel Prize Sperm Bank and, most recently, Good Book: The Bizarre, Hilarious, Disturbing, Marvelous, and Inspiring Things I Learned When I Read Every Single Word of the Bible, based on his "Blogging the Bible" series for Slate. HOW THEY DID IT is produced in partnership with Pregame Magazine. Our theme music is by Girls Like Bass.
When David Plotz was initially hired at the online magazine Slate in 1996, he had never really been on the Web before. He used email at the time, but this was the early days of public use of the Internet, and he hadn’t visited a website yet. “Just using the Web was something people did as an everyday matter in 1996, said Plotz, who started out as a staff writer but is now Slate’s top editor. Plotz talked to It's All Journalism Producers Michael O'Connell and Julia O'Donoghue about how Slate has changed over the years, including its time behind a paywall and how its editors write those highly clickable headlines.
