Have you ever closely inspected the landscape when you're touring the National Park System, particularly in the West? You never know what you might find. Back in 2010 a 7-year-old attending a Junior Ranger program at  Badlands National Park spied a partially exposed fossil that turned out to be the skull of a 32-million-year-old saber-toothed cat. If you've ever visited Petrified Forest National Park you've no doubt marveled over the colorful fossilized tree trunks. There are also fossilized trees on the northern range of Yellowstone National Park, but nowhere near as colorful. For this week's episode we've invited Vince Santucci, the National Park Service's senior paleontologist, to discuss the many fossil resources that exist across the National Park System, from coast to coast and north to south.

During this month celebrating Women's History, we want to focus on the important role Maxine Johnston played in the fight to preserve the Big Thicket, the nation's first (alongside Big Cypress) National Preserve and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In our travels, we have always been impressed by the tenacity and dedication of so many volunteers and citizen groups - true democracy in action. We all owe them so much. One such citizen and conservationist champion is Maxine Johnston, who was recently featured in a National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) blog post: These 10 National Parks Wouldn't Exist Without Women. Thanks to Shannon Harris from KVLU Public Radio in Beaumont, TX, who interviewed Maxine Johnston in late 2019, we are able to share an excerpt of Maxine Johnston speaking about her involvement. The episode also features our conversation with the very helpful Ranger we met at the Visitor Center, who reviewed our Junior Ranger badges (you can hear us all take the oath together!) and spoke to us about forest restoration, longleaf pines, and the Kirby Nature Trail. We are grateful to Shelly Vitanza from Lamar University for allowing us to use photos from Lamar University tribute on the occasion of Maxine being selected as the Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal for Lamar University, where she spent more than three decades as a research librarian and then library director. She was honored both for her contributions to the university as well as her dedication and success as a conservation advocate. In fact, today at 93 years young, her LinkedIn profile lists her occupation as “Conservation Gadfly.” We are so thankful for gadflies like Maxine Johnston. Join us as we meet Betty Reid Soskin, the inspiring National Park Service (NPS) Ranger who began her NPS career at age 85 and is currently the oldest Ranger. Based at Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park (NHP) in Richmond, California, she is a true inspiration with accolades as an author, entrepreneur, musician, activist and civil rights pioneer. She shares stories and experiences from the war where she worked at a segregated union hall but also her role in planning and launching the NHP. We encourage you to read her memoir “Sign My Name to Freedom: A Memoir of a Pioneering Life.” The biggest lesson we took away from meeting Ranger Betty as well as her book was that history is written by the people in the room doing the remembering. She has made it a habit to be in that room but she has taught us that it is important for all of us to be more aware of all strands of our history, not just the physical remnants. In fact, it is most important to seek and learn about the parts of history that are not so apparent. While we love the beauty of the national parks we visit, we are also as impressed by the history we have learned along the way. We saw a quote from Betty Reid Soskin that summed this up so perfectly: “We have created this system of national parks, where it's possible to revisit almost any era in our history...The heroic places, the scenic wonders, the contemplative places, the shameful places, and the painful places. In order to own that history. Own it, process it, that we may begin to forgive ourselves in order to move into a more compassionate future together.” As always, we would love your feedback. Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve (NHP&P) is comprised of six sites. These sites are spread over a large area across south Louisiana so it is essential to plan out your trip carefully. We visited in January 2020 but currently most of the sites are closed or with limited access because of Covid-19 restrictions. In this episode, we describe the six different sites that comprise the NHP&P but also speak to Ranger Briana to learn about the history and context of the NPS unit as well as the history of the people. She also explains the story behind the park's namesake, Jean Lafitte. We also attend a talk presented by a volunteer which focuses on the pre-Civil War economy and history of the South; the false narratives that justified the horrific institution of slavery; and the unique cultural influences of New Orleans. This month's Organization feature is the Memorial Foundation which helped to build the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC. The MLK Memorial is the 395th unit in the National Park Service and is the first memorial to an African-American on or near the National Mall. While we are not particular fans of winter, a friend told us that visiting Yellowstone in winter was like being in a snow globe. After hearing that, we knew we had to visit. And while we expected to be disappointed as our expectations were so high, the trip was absolutely magical. It was a trip of firsts for us, including traveling on the Snowcoach that our friend likened to a “people mover out of Star Wars.” We cross country skied around the Geyser Basin and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, as well as Lone Star Geyser. We were afraid of the cold but it wasn't a problem at all. We even met a young man who hiked and camped from Mammoth Hot Springs all the way to Old Faithful; we share the conversation in the episode. There are Ranger programs and multiple Junior Ranger programs--including a special winter one--and Ranger Rebecca gave us a master class in geology. This trip was truly a unique experience that we will never forget, and can only recommend our listeners to consider a winter visit in the future. For you will never find a place as beautiful, magical, and peaceful. Earning the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award. As a Girl Scout Girl Advisory Board member for 5 years my goal since 6th grade was to be a national delegate. I have enjoyed being a part of the Girl Scout council cookie entrepreneur program selling over 1000 boxes per season including corporate partnerships with Hopdoddy, Amys Ice Cream and People Fund. I love being a part of a large multilevel troop where I can share my passion and experiences with others. I love badges, journeys and travel. As a member of the Texas/US congregation who traveled to Cyprus in 2017, 2019 and 2021 as a true Girl Guide exchange program. I have been able to participate in various roles including the local cookie vendor selection committee, media girls, press corps, GSUSA National Merchandising Committee, Citrus Trail Blazer troop and of course there are all the opportunities that I applied for and didn’t get accepted too. That is ok – I learned to persevere, to ask why and what could I do better. As a homeschooler I have time to pursue my passions and discover new ones – I take classes at the local community college. In addition to Girl Scouts, I am involved with SWENext National Advisory Board, 4-H photography, Girls Who Code, SWENext club, volunteering at local library, with Reinvented Magazine as their Marketing Campaign Director and starting my own business. I am an accidental athlete, focusing on strength building sports after bullying in 8th grade because I didn’t look like everyone else - Archery, Obstacle Course racing (like American Ninja Warrior), track, tennis, golf, rock climbing, strength and conditioning. RAINIER The main visitors' center for Olympic National Park is on the northern end of the park by Port Angeles. Since all of the visitor centers are closed due to the pandemic things are a bit different than they normally would be. They do however have park rangers there that have trail maps and Junior Ranger booklets, who are willing to answer any questions that you may have. Other National Parks may have different offerings so you may want to look that up before heading out. If you make this a longer trip you can even take a ferry into Victoria, Canada from Port Angeles. Unfortunately right now due to Covid they have canceled all sailings until November 30, 2020. If you are planning a trip after that, check out the website for Black Ball Ferry Line for updates on their status. If you like hikes and wild flowers you should definitely check out the Hurricane Ridge hike in Olympic National Park. When you get to the summit you can see great views of the mountains and you can actually see into Canada. Marymere Falls is another great waterfall hike and you can take a swim in Lake Crescent while you are there. Or if the water is too cold you can enjoy a nice lunch by the lake. The Woodland Inns is a great little place to stay while visiting the park. They also have a great contactless system setup for checking in/out. Since they are individual cabins they will give you a code to a key box and they will text you the code and make sure that you have everything you need before you get there. Visiting Mount Rainier has some great hikes but depending on the weather you might not see much of the mountain. The parking lots in Mount Rainier fill up really fast so if you plan on visiting you may want to get an early start. You should also keep in mind that there is not much in the way of food when you go to Mount Rainier so bring a lunch and snacks. Also make sure that you go in with a full tank of gas. Keep in mind that when you are planning a trip anywhere right now, you should think about also planning on food options and do some research on what places offer or if they are even open. This is one thing that you never really had to worry about before Covid but now it can cause you and your family some unnecessary stress. Chamizal National Memorial is one of the most unique NPS sites. It is many things in one: an urban park, a performing arts center, and part of a cross-border park. Most of all it is a testament to the importance of diplomacy and a physical reminder of the peaceful settlement of a 100-year boundary dispute between the United States and Mexico. Congress established the memorial in 1966 to commemorate the successful diplomatic conclusion of the Chamizal issue and to celebrate cross-cultural friendship and goodwill. As the park's website says, “We celebrate the cultures of the borderlands to promote the same mutual respect that helped to diplomatically resolve an international disagreement.” The name of this episode derives from the sections of the site's Junior Ranger program.

The goal of Park Ranger John is to share the things I learned while working and living in parks. I want our readers to have the best experiences possible in the parks they visit. Follow John on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. TIPS FOR VISITING NATIONAL PARKS As the National parks start to open you may see different rules and regulations for each park depending on the crowds that they are getting. Some parks may only be available for scheduled visits rather than just showing up. Crowd control has always been a top priority for National Parks and you will see that this is still a fact as the parks are slowly re-opening. Make sure that you are contacting the right people to find out what each park is offering as they start to open up again, whether it is a visitors center or the local Park Rangers. Facebook and Twitter have been a really up to date source of information for what is going on for each of the parks. The Junior Ranger Programs are a really great source of learning for a bunch of different age groups. The way the program works is that you would find a ranger at a visitors center or contact station and ask about the program. They will give you a booklet and throughout the day you will go through the visitors center and learn some of the history of the park. Then you will go out into the park and do some activities. Once you do the worksheets in the booklet you will take it into the ranger and take a pledge and receive a Junior Ranger Badge. This is not something that you can do in five minutes. You will need to make sure that you are getting the booklet as soon as you get there if this is something that you want to do for your visit. You can also earn a Junior Ranger Badge virtually. Different parks are offering some other virtual learning tools right now that kids can take advantage of. Just visit John’s site for information on the Junior Ranger Programs so that you can learn at home. You can look up National Park webcams and just look around at different parks at home. The average National Park visits is about 3 - 4 hours, usually between the hours of 9am and 4pm. So if you want to visit at a less busy time you should keep that in mind when planning your visit. The first couple weeks of June or the very end of August also tend to be less crowded due to school openings and closings. Unfortunately that won't necessarily be the case for this year! FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR John loves his Zamberlan boots because if his feet aren't happy he is not happy! He also likes to wear layers because it is easy to dress up or down, and clothes that dry quickly. Check back for new episodes on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month! Details: The first site the family visited on the Big Island of Hawaii was Pu`uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park. Located on the west coast of the island, literally just steps away from the famous snorkeling site, 2 step Learning what Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau means in English helps one understand the significance and history of the place. Puʻuhonua means place of refuge. As a place of refuge, those who broke kapu, the ancient Hawaiian sacred laws, would be protected here. And in times of battle, defeated warriors and civilians would also seek protection here as anyone seeking shelter here could not be harmed. The place of refuge itself was enclosed by the Great Wall, an impressive 965 ft long masonry wall, the remains of which can still be viewed. One can also visit the Royal Grounds, important residential and ceremonial sites for the Hawaiian royals, the ali'i. For all three of us, the Junior Ranger program is always one of the highlights. We had the good fortune to speak to Ranger Julia shortly upon arrival who explained more about the program and the features of the site. We were lucky to be there on a cultural demonstration day and are grateful to the volunteers who give their time to share Hawaiian culture with visitors, and also took the time to speak to us.

Inspired by the parks, with their beauty and deep histories, these three adventurers hope to encourage more people to visit national parks, particularly the less famous and visited ones, and become Junior Rangers themselves, galvanizing a larger movement of youth and family connection to nature and preservation. Description: A record-breaking snowstorm with whiteout conditions forces Danielle, Bryan, and the girls to ditch plans to visit the Petrified Forest in northern Arizona in favor of an impromptu visit to the Sonoran Desert -- and Saguaro National Park, located in southern Arizona. The city of Tucson, splits this park into two halves: the Rincon Mountain District to the east and the Tucson Mountain District in the west. First-timers will be amazed at the desert’s biodiversity. There’s a riot of flora and fauna here, from wildflowers to majestic seventy-foot tall Saguaro cactus to stubby nurse trees. Much of the park’s wildlife can be elusive. Birds, however, are easier to spot as many make their homes inside the park’s namesake plant. The east and west sides have their own robust visitor’s center with cultural exhibits and small learning gardens. Scenic drives also help you make the most of your visit. The Bajada Loop Drive takes you around the Tucson Mountain District while the Cactus Forest Drive circles the Rincon Mountain District. You can pick up trailheads or stop at overlooks along the way.  There truly are activities for every type of park visitor, including several ADA-compliant walks. Our four-day trip included the following: Tucson Mountain District / West: ● The Hugh Norris Trail ● Several easy walks- the Valley View Overlook Trail, the Signal Hill Petroglyphs Trail, and the Desert Discovery Trail  ● Bajada Loop Drive Rincon Mountain District / East: ● Cactus Forest Trail ● Freeman Homestead Trail guided hike ● Guided hike along part of the Tanque Verde Ridge Trailat sunset  ● Mica View Loop ● Desert Ecology Trail ● The Garwood Loop Trail and Wildhorse Tank- a 6 miler that Danielle ranks as one of her favorite hikes of all time ● Cactus Forest Loop Drive We may not have originally planned to visit Saguaro National Park but we highly recommend that you do! A long weekend is all the time you need to enjoy this desert beauty.  Discussion includes the following: ● An introduction to Saguaro’s east and west districts [5:37] ● The Hugh Norris Trail [9:28] ● The Freeman Homestead Trail [11:50]  ● Plant life in the desert [15:58] ● The Tanque Verde Ridge Trail at sunset [18:03] ● Frontcountry and backcountry camping details [19:18] ● Speedway Blvd links the east and west districts [21:12] ● Gilbert Ray campground [21:20] ● The desert’s vibrant bird and animal populations [22:13] ● Saguaro and the city in one long weekend [24:26] ● Loop drives in the east and west districts [25:15] ● West Side recommendations [25:42] ● East Side recommendations [26:22] ● A kid’s eye view of Saguaro National Park - Part I: cactus hotels, Sonoran Desert signifiers, Junior Ranger responsibilities [30:01] ● A kid’s eye view of Saguaro National Park - Part II: cactus facts, cactus nursery schools, cactus jokes [36:50]   Actions: Subscribe to our podcast wherever podcasts are available or from our website https://www.everybodysnationalparks.com/ We also want to hear about your adventures. Email us at Hello@everybodysnps.com. Bayfield County Wild
Episode 13: September Celebrations

Bayfield County Wild

On the one-year anniversary of Bayfield County Wild, Co-hosts Nancy Christopher and Mary Motiff, director of Bayfield County Tourism, have some fun with Mary Grant, the owner of the Keeper of the Light Gift Shop and coordinator for the Annual Apostle Islands Lighthouse Celebration.  It’s also the 20th Anniversary of the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center, so let’s get this party started! Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center’s 20th Anniversary Celebration For 20 years, the Northern Great Lakes Visitors Center (NGLVC) has been keeping the history of the area alive on its 150-acre site on County Hwy. G, just south of Washburn. Run by six, partner organizations – the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park Service, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Wisconsin Historical Society, the University of Wisconsin Extension and the Friends of the Center Alliance, the NGLVC is hosting a day-long event on Sept. 29 packed with activities for everyone.   Starting at 8:30 a.m., you can sign up to participate in a native grass planting on the property.  There will be book signings by area authors and a visit by the artist who painted the huge mural on the back wall of the center. In addition, a ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for the new exhibit documenting the Center’s $2 million Energy Renovation Project. U.S. Fish & Wildlife staff will lead guided hikes on the boardwalk trails. Plus, there will be Junior Ranger activities hosted by the National Park Service and appearances by Smokey the Bear. There will also be face painting and prizes for scavenger hunts. Throughout the day, visitors will have a chance to participate in voting for the winner of an art contest where artists submit photos of artwork that has been inspired in some way by the Visitor Center. The artwork can be anything from paintings and drawings to pottery or woodcarvings or whatever medium the artists choose. Artists who want to enter can find out more on the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the NGLVC Facebook Events page. The artist with the most votes will win a cash prize. Visitors won’t want to miss “Who Goes Bump in the Night,” an evening hike on the NGLVC’s boardwalk to listen to the owls and other night critters. The NGLVC is open 7 days a week, except holidays. Many of the exhibits are interactive with local personalities featured in interviews portraying commercial fishermen, loggers, Native Americans and others, and sharing stories of the past.  For those who have an interest in Lake Superior, shipwrecks or lighthouses, there is a great collection of books, some with rare titles, in the Gift Shop. And you don’t want to miss the breathtaking views from the NGLVC’s five-story Observation Tower with spotting scopes.   Apostle Islands Lighthouse Celebration From now through Sept. 15, the community is celebrating the largest collection of lighthouses located in a national park in the United States. The celebration includes guided cruises to all six lighthouses. Every lighthouse is different, so every cruise, conducted by Apostle Islands Cruises, is a different experience. Mary Grant coordinates all of the cruises from her Keeper of the Light Gift Shop in Bayfield. She says her favorite lighthouse is on Sand Island. After the cruise over to Sand Island, you’ll take a two-mile hike through beautiful, old-growth forest to get to the lighthouse, which built with Brownstone that was quarried from the island. The “Showplace of the Apostle Islands,” according to Mary, is the Raspberry Island Lighthouse. It’s the easiest lighthouse to get to (although there are quite a few steps once you arrive) and is a duplex with furnishings from the early 1900s. This is a living history exhibit, where your guide dresses up as the Keeper and gives you a tour of the lighthouse from his perspective.   There are very few Lighthouse Keepers left. New technology has made it no longer necessary to have working lighthouses, which for many years served as beacons to safely guide mariners through the waterways surrounding the Apostle Islands and into the protected waters of the bay. Mary says there are lots of great stories about the lighthouses the guides love to talk about. One haunted tale involved a cruise to Raspberry Island, where during the tour, the group heard cries from a young girl coming from the Assistant Keeper’s quarters. When they asked their tour guide who was crying next door, the guide assured them there was no one there. When the group returned from their cruise, they learned there was an Assistant Keeper who lived on the island with his family, and one of his children was a girl about the same age. Needless to say, they were all quite spooked. Mary tells another story from Michigan Island, where the head keeper and his assistant went on a fishing trip. They left behind the Keeper’s wife and three children. Gone for several days, the wife, who was raised in the city, had to figure out how to milk the cow. You’ll laugh at how she made it work. The lighthouse tours run daily through September 15. If you love lighthouses, you will want to stop in at Mary’s Keeper of the Light Gift Shop, which is a lighthouse specialty store. As part of the celebration, there is a photography presentation by Mark Weller and a live musical performance called “Lake Songs & Lighthouses” by Warren Nelson, performed at the Harbor View Event Center in Washburn. For more information about the lighthouse celebration, visit lighthousecelebration.com or call 715-779-5619.   September Events The celebrations continue with the following events: Now through Sept. 15: Apostle Islands Annual Lighthouse Celebration Sept. 1: Port Wing Fish Boil Sept. 6: The Great Emergency Pig Out, which is a pig roast hosted by the White Winter Winery to benefit first responders. Live music and lots of great food. Sept. 7: One of the Big Top Chautaugua’s House Shows, “Wild Woods & Waters.” Sept. 8: Cornucopia Art Crawl featuring local artists. Sept. 21 - 23: Annual Red Cliff Cultural Day Sept. 22: Chicken Sh**ing Fundraiser for American Legion 516 in at Chopper’s Bar & Grill in Grand View. Sept. 29: Fall Color Ride Bike Tours in Washburn. Jeff Goins returns to the Park Leaders Show to discuss his new book, The Art of Work. The Art of Work is a proven path to discovering what you were meant to do. It is about finding your calling and being who you were meant to be. The book is wonderful. In my opinion, the best work Jeff Goins has done so far. But I admit, I have a personal connection to this book. I was fortunate enough to have my story, the story of becoming a park ranger and then walking away to something else, is part of this book. In this interview, Jeff and I talk about how the story of a park ranger fit into the bigger story of a book about finding your calling. On the surface, you may think a story about becoming a park ranger is about finding a dream job and a calling. It is bigger than that. Being a park ranger is piece of a full life that led me towards work I was meant to do, including Park Leaders. The story is told beautifully by Jeff Goins and I want you to read it. Believe me, this is a great book. You don't want to miss the offer for a free copy of the Art of Work. You can get it here. The first time Jeff Goins was a guest on the Park Leaders Show, I told him that I knew a park would step up and make him a honorary Junior Ranger. So far, no park has come forward to do it. Who can help? Please reach out and let's make Jeff Goins an honorary Junior Ranger. If you like what you hear from Jeff, you might enjoy his podcast, The Portfolio Life.
