South Africa's Police Minister Bheki Cele hurled personal insults at crime fighter-turned-politician Ian Cameron at a heated community meeting in gang-infested Hanover Park this week. Cele went as far as to question Cameron's intelligence. This after Cameron questioned investigations being done poorly and leadership in SAPS being broken while Cele boasts of successful arrests, but without successful convictions. Cameron - who is heading to Parliament for the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) - says Cele's response proves that he has "no clue about policing". In this interview with BizNews, Cameron also shares a list of names of murder victims he hopes will haunt Cele every time he closes his eyes.

In a chapel sermon, Rev. Chris Barnard of Grace OPC in Hanover Park, IL, expounds on Exodus 16-1-12. He connects this passage about God providing manna to the Israelites to the account in John 6, where Jesus feeds the five thousand. Drawing parallels between the two stories, Rev. Barnard highlights how they both point to Jesus as the true bread from heaven that gives eternal life. Just as God sustained the Israelites physically with manna in the wilderness, Jesus sustains us spiritually as the bread of life who came down from heaven. Rev. Barnard encourages us to feed on Christ by trusting in his finished work for our salvation.

No one word can justify the legend of Coach Jim Anderson, and the many that know him, characterize him in one word - Intense! To this day, Anderson's impact is felt through the example he set as a student-athlete and coach on Alden Street. A product of Hanover Park high school in Northern New Jersey, Anderson joins the PrideCast to talk about a fascinating career progression in athletics and business. Anderson's introduction to wrestling occurred under Coach Joseph Krufka, a 1952 Olympic Alternate and 1955 NCAA runner-up to legendary, Dan Hodge. Coming from humble beginnings, Anderson would go on to wrestle for Coach Doug Parker at Springfield, and met financial challenges along the way that derailed him from finishing his college career in the traditional four year span. The New Jersey native discusses his brief departure from Springfield to pursue a career in the Marines and start a family. He also shares what led to his return to Alden Street to finish his undergraduate career. Anderson went on to become a New England Champion in 1966 at 167lbs. Following a short stint as an educator in New York Public Schools, Anderson pursued the opportunity to complete a graduate degree while being an Assistant Wrestling Coach under Doug Parker, and leading Springfield's Men's Lacrosse program for eight seasons where he tallied 50 wins. The former men's lacrosse coach left Alden Street to travel globally to serve in a plethora of occupations including Westinghouse, and building theme parks in Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Japan, and more.
In this episode, I am pleased to welcome Sean Morrissey to the show. Sean began as a buy and hold real estate investor in 2003 with a two-bedroom condo in Hanover Park, IL. Having earned his Illinois real estate broker license in 2007, Sean survived the market crash and assisted homeowners throughout the Chicagoland area and opened Chicagoland Realty Group Partners LLC in 2011. Since that time, Sean has managed over 700+ rental transactions, 200+ homes, and owns and manages his own rental property portfolio in the western suburbs of the Chicagoland area. Sean focuses the majority of his time in growing and managing his real estate portfolio while hosting a podcast named Landlording for Life. I am always so interested in how and why people get into real estate investing, so Sean started by sharing his background with us. He said he graduated from Purdue University with a BA in Restaurant Management and joined the Peace Corps where he worked in Western Kenya. When he returned home and began working in restaurant management, his dad introduced him to a book about using real estate investments as tax shelters. Sean started joining REIAs to talk to investors and landlords, and bought his first investment property in June of 2003 in the Chicagoland area. I asked Sean to explain his experience with the Peace Corps and what led him to choose that before starting his corporate work life. He said he was involved in a student exchange program in college which got him interested in international travel and helping others. He was stationed in western Kenya at a technical college helping students work with computers and doing many community outreach projects. Sean said it was an awesome experience and he would love to go back someday soon. I wanted Sean to explain what led him to get his broker's license and what he considers the advantages are to do so for a real estate investor. His thought process was that he would have access to the MLS and more deals, and be a better investor. Sean said it made a lot of sense to pursue his license at that time because there was no Zillow or Redfin, which has made a lot of the property information public now. Until 2009, he was still working full-time in the restaurant business, so working more as a realtor initially helped him to figure out how he was going to transition to real estate investing full-time. As Sean has had his own property management company in the past, we talked quite a bit about common mistakes made by investors when managing their own properties, size of portfolios, and why he sold his company. Sean's opinion is that a newer investor should manage their own properties until they get over ten doors in their portfolio so that they understand the rigors of the job and learn from any mistakes made. He also talked a lot about what their criteria was for screening tenants, which is very helpful for those landlords who self-manage. I asked Sean to explain why he has shifted toward an investor-centered model, rather than focusing on his brokerage work or continuing in the property management field. He went into great detail about the several ways you can benefit financially from buy and hold investing versus other types, and also the time and work investment of each. Sean shares some of his struggles as a landlord, specifics about his business dealings, property management tactics, and so much more! You will not want to miss this fantastic, value-filled episode of the Just Start Real Estate Podcast! (00:00-38:12): We are privileged to be joined by Pastor Ron Heitman from Evangel Assembly of God in Hanover Park. He starts by talking about his history in ministry and how he came to be a church leader. Evangel Church is remarkably diverse, with 55+ nations represented on 2 campuses. He also touches on the stigma of Assemblies of God. How are they viewed? Ron has had substantial experiences with miracles first-hand. A family in a third-world country received where his parents were working received an envelope from a mysterious “Mary Smith”. It contained money and a letter of encouragement, unprovoked. Later on, his father went to meet this woman, and she miraculously knew his name and his wife’s name. (39:15-1:18:05): Ian’s college friend and the Creative Arts Pastor at First Baptist Church in Elgin, Joshua Hoegh joins us. He talks about his upbringing in music, specifically on the piano. He shares his introversion and how it sometimes juxtaposes his role as a worship leader. He and his wife Melissa live in a dorm at Judson, as she is a resident director; which is also an ironic situation for an introvert. He is speaking at the FILO Chicago event in May on Scenic Design on a Dime. He wants to create a good balance with being creative in the church while working in the gospel.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
