In this episode of Eighty Twenty, Shanina Shaik and George Sinclair kick off the new year with a very special episode recorded live at Spring Place in Beverly Hills. The hosts sit down to reflect on the lessons learned and personal growth achieved after a turbulent year in 2023 that led them to create the Eighty Twenty podcast. Getting candid about the personal challenges that led them to create the podcast, Shanina revisits her painful struggle with postpartum depression in the aftermath of giving birth while Georgia details her crisis of purpose and lack of fulfillment while playing shows and releasing music that didn't truly resonate. They also touch on how relationship problems and communication issues compounded their distress. At their lowest points, the women found healing through modalities like the intense Hoffman Process, as well as Changa (also known as Ayahuasca, a powerful plant medicine), which helped fundamentally shift their perspectives. They explain how these experiences taught them to let go of control, improve communication, and above all, know and love themselves more fully. Shifting to the present, the hosts share their excitement about the future of Eighty Twenty and plans to develop a broader wellness platform that can inspire others the way their podcast guests have educated them this past season. However, they emphasize that none of this would have been possible without going through hardship together and discovering opportunity in the process. As the conversation winds down, Shanina and Georgia touch on finding magic in even the most difficult times. They encourage anyone going through similar struggles to lean in and trust that your own version of happiness or fulfillment awaits on the other side of self-work and spiritual growth.

Dafne started her career by following the American Dream, seeking to fulfill her parents' hope for a better life in the land of opportunity. En route to becoming an OBGYN, Dafne attended SFSU where she was a biology major and quickly realized this was not her dream, but the dream of her parents. From early in her childhood, Dafne's creativity was what brought her the most joy. As she realized medicine was not her true passion, she made a bold transition and decided to follow her heart to the creative arts. Committed to forging her own destiny, Dafne enrolled in The Art Institute of California - San Francisco where she graduated with an Associates degree of Science in the Culinary Arts. During her education, Dafne started apprenticing under a Certified Master Chef, learning the art of cooking at the highest level for four years. Moving back to Los Angeles in 2015, Dafne began cooking as a private chef for Aubrey ‘Drake' Graham, a high profile assignment that catapulted her to a Sous Chef level. Following her time as a personal chef, Dafne was soon hired by a fine dining Vietnamese restaurant, allowing her to hone new skills, honor different traditions and discover a new level of respect for the sometime tedious process of cooking. For most of her culinary career, Dafne's primary love has been found in Italian cuisine. Her specialty, and most requested dish is born from the craft she's perfected through more than ten thousand hours of meticulous work: Handmade Corn and Truffle Ravioli. Reminding her of her Latin American roots, Dafne fell in love with the culinary traditions of Italy as she proclaims, both cultures' cuisines are  “dominated by grandmas”. Following her passion for pasta, Dafne worked under many talented Italian Chefs, who all imparted their own expertise and artistry, ultimately inspiring Dafne to lean on her creativity in the kitchen. In 2019 Dafne became the Executive Sous Chef at Spring Place, a private membership club in the heart of Beverly Hills. After helping to organize and build the restaurant from the ground up, Chef Dafne (and the rest of the culinary world) was rocked by the arrival of the pandemic. Though not discouraged for long, Chef Dafne was able to shift and once again, re-entered the private chef world. While working as a private Chef Dafne was able to indulge in new found creativity, playing around with the culinary arts on her social media - creating captivating stories of her pasta making endeavors. It was through this that she began to gain some notoriety, and towards the end of 2021, Dafne was invited to partake in the world renowned cooking show, Hell's Kitchen.

"The scariest thing [in the world] is doing something different and not having an example to follow," says designer Misha Nonoo on the latest episode of TheCurrent Innovators. Speaking at a MouthMedia Live recording at Spring Place in New York with TheCurrent's founder Liz Bacelar, the designer discussed how she pivoted her contemporary namesake brand in 2016 to focusing on selling direct-to-consumer instead. "It was scary and I was doing something completely new, but at the same time it was very exciting," she explains. Such disruption is something that has become second nature to Nonoo in recent years. In 2015, she was one of the first in the industry to forgo an official fashion week presentation and host an Instagram one instead. The next year, she returned to the platform with a see-now-buy-now presentation, which users could shop via influencer platform, rewardStyle. For a designer who sees herself as an entrepreneur holding the reins for her brand's success – and her personal happiness – switching to selling directly to the consumer was a very clear direction, she explains. That said, challenging the industry's statusquo comes with a lot of hard work, which Nonoo does not shy away from. "One of the most enlightening things that I was ever told was by Anna Wintour (...) she said to me 'an overnight success is 10 years in the making'," Nonoo explains. Seven years on, she feels she is just 'making it' now. Time has also given Nonoo the confidence to know that a lot of the industry is based on smoke and mirrors. As a small, independent brand, she now feels confident in having the choice of what to subscribe to. During this conversation, Nonoo also talks about the importance of building a business based on values, how fashion week has become obsolete, and the challenges of running an on-demand business.
